Pete Ohs, a 2013 Filmmaker 25 New Face, describes his Slamdance-premiering comedy/drama Love and Work as “a film about an imaginary past as a way to figure out where we went wrong in the present.” A minimalist, slightly absurdist romantic comedy, the picture represents both a continuation of the pared-down production model Ohs described to Filmmaker upon the release of his previous Jethica as well as a dramatic departure. Instead of the Jethica‘s lo-fi naturalism, Ohs here goes for a clipped rhythms and a more deadpan affect as his two potential workmate lovers who meet in a shoe factory navigate […]

The birthplace of such recent gems as Hannah Ha Ha, Retrograde, The Civil Dead, Yelling Fire In An Empty Theater, and Waiting for the Light to Change, the Slamdance Film Festival returns for its 29th edition, kicking off January 20 in Utah and January 23 online. One title that especially caught our eye is Love and Work, the latest from Pete Ohs, who last directed the SXSW hit Jethica. Starring Stephanie Hunt, Will Madden, Frank Mosley, Alexi Pappas, and John S. Davies, we’re pleased to exclusively premiere the film’s first teaser ahead of a Slamdance debut on January 20.
Here’s a synopsis:

After popular (co-signed with Kentucker Audley) feature film projects of Sylvio (2017) and Strawberry Mansion (2021), for his latest solo effort (away from animation), Albert Birney finds himself in front of the camera alongside small critters in cicadas and a larger critter in a pooch for what could be an homage to the past and a certain nostalgia to gaming of a different time. Produced by filmmaker Pete Ohs and Emma Hannaway, we can certainly feel that some of the cool quirks in the Baltimore-based filmmaker’s Obex (which could land in 2024 or 2025) that we can witness in his filmography.…...

Not long ago, an award-winning Polish composer who’d scored dozens of films approached Ula Śniegowska about U.S. in Progress, an industry event conceived as a bridge between the Polish and American markets that runs parallel to the American Film Festival in Wrocław, Poland.
“He approached me saying, ‘I’ve done enough in the Polish market. I need an introduction to the international market. Can you, as U.S. in Progress, help me?’” Śniegowska recalls. “It seems we are a perfect matchmaker for those types of companies to have their work exposed in the U.S.”
Celebrating its 13th edition, U.S. in Progress was launched as a showcase for emerging independent American filmmakers. Each year, the event presents a curated selection of American indie titles in the final stages of production to European sales agents, distributors and festival programmers. This year’s edition takes place Nov. 8 – 10.

After premiering on Fandor last fall, the SXSW genre-bender Jethica is now streaming on the Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox!
Variety hailed Jethica as an “ingenious, deadpan horror-satire that asks, ‘Can you ghost a ghost?’”
Now that the movie has been available to stream for a few weeks, we’re sharing this hilarious Spoilery trailer that counts off how many times a character says “Jethica” in Jethica.
In this future cult classic, Jessica lives in fear of a man named Kevin who follows her everywhere she goes. While on a road trip in New Mexico, she reconnects with Elena—an old friend she hasn’t seen since high school—who has been hiding out at her deceased grandmother’s ranch. When Kevin mysteriously appears again, Jessica and Elena seek help from beyond the grave to get rid of him for good… but Kevin is different from other stalkers and won’t move on so easily.

Elena and Jessica
A woman on the run after being forced to contend with a stalker. An old friend with a spooky secret living in a trailer in the middle of the New Mexico desert. Isolation and ghosts and the importance of friendship – all filtered through a narrator whom we may or may not be able to trust. Jethica is an unusual little genre film which made a big impact at festivals before going on general release, and it’s even more interesting when one digs into the story behind it. Director Pete Ohs and stars Andy Faulkner, Ashley Denise Robinson, Callie Hernandez and Will Madden , all of whom wrote, explained how the project was co-created on the spot from nothing but a location and a handful of shared ideas.
“It started with me and Andy,” says Pete. “We had made a couple films prior, and were talking about making another movie.

Shudder and IFC Midnight are launching microbudget Skinamarink on a not-so-micro 629 screens, giving the viral horror pic a major push after a well-received premiere back at Fantasia-fest that just kept snowballing with strong reviews and social media love.
“I was over the moon. For a horror filmmaker in Canada, [Fantasia] is like getting a Cannes screening,” says first-time filmmaker Kyle Edward Ball about the leadup to this weekend’s buzzy specialty opening. He shot the 15k feature at his parents’ home in Edmonton, Canada.
In it, two children wake up in the middle of the night to find their father is missing and all the windows and doors in their home have vanished. “I’d had a nightmare when I was little. I was in my parents’ house, my parents were missing, and there was a monster. And lots of people have shared this exact same dream,” Ball tells Deadline.

Poland’s American Film Festival readies for its — lucky — 13th edition, unspooling Nov. 8-13 in Wrocław.
The fest, which will open with “Bones and All” and close with Florian Zeller’s “The Son,” will once again combine classics with contemporary titles, for instance pairing Nancy Buirski’s doc “Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy” with John Schlesinger’s Oscar-winner, or introducing retrospectives dedicated to Robert Altman and Nina Menkes.
Menkes — behind “Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power” — will also get Aff’s Indie Star Award. Previous recipients include Todd Solondz, David Gordon Green, Hal Hartley, Whit Stillman, Rosanna Arquette and John Waters, who came to Poland last year.
“It was amazing,” Waters tells Variety, and he was “pleasantly surprised and flattered” by the local audience’s knowledge of his work.

The first time he made the trip to Europe to take part in U.S. in Progress, an event dedicated to independent American filmmaking launched by Poland’s American Film Festival in 2011, L.A.-based director Pete Ohs admits he was “very green.” “It was my first narrative feature…[and I was] very much getting into this world of independent filmmaking,” Ohs tells Variety.
U.S. in Progress, which this year takes place Nov. 9 – 11 in Wrocław, Poland, presents a selection of roughly half a dozen American indie titles in the final stages of production to European sales agents, distributors and festival programmers.

A cross-section of works from revered masters and fresh faces will take center stage at Poland’s American Film Festival (Aff), whose 13th edition takes place Nov. 8 – 13 in Wrocław, Poland.
Established in 2010 as the sister event of the New Horizons Film Festival, a showcase of independent and arthouse cinema launched in 2001, the Aff bills itself as the first film event in Central Europe solely devoted to the works of contemporary and classic American cinema.
“We are searching for those voices, those auteurs, those talents and tendencies, and those waves of American film that are the most original and show some vibes of the current moment,” said festival director Ula Śniegowska.
Similar in spirit to France’s long-running Deauville American Film Festival, which this year will host its 48th edition, the Aff aims to spotlight the breadth and diversity of contemporary American filmmaking.

Building a bridge between American independent filmmakers and the European market is the goal of U.S. in Progress, which is hosted each year during the American Film Festival (Aff) in Wrocław, Poland.
The event presents a carefully curated selection of roughly half a dozen American indie titles in the final stages of production to sales agents, distributors and festival programmers. This year’s edition takes place Nov. 9 – 11.
Along with offering a showcase of those films for European buyers, U.S. in Progress each year invites leading Polish post-production companies to the event, with Fixafilm, Orka Studio, Black Photon, Xanf and Soundflower Studio this year each offering a 10,000 in-kind award. That’s alongside a newly added 50,000 cash award being handed out by the Polish Film Institute, to be spent by the winning filmmaker on post-production, image, sound and/or VFX in Poland.

During the 2022 SXSW Film Festival, this writer saw plenty of great movies, but one of the biggest surprises was director Pete Ohs’ Jethica, which ended up being so different from what I had been expecting going into it. Starring Callie Hernandez, Ashley Denise Robinson, and Andy Faulkner, Jethica’s story is centered around two high school friends coming together to deal with a stalker, but once the supernatural elements of the story are introduced, the film takes some unusual turns that left me delighted as a viewer.
While in Austin last week, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Ohs about his unconventional approach to creating Jethica and how his cast was far more involved with the creative process for the project than how movies are usually made. Ohs also chatted about how Jethica’s primary location dictated aspects of the film and what parts of the filmmaking process...

A chance meeting of old friends, a very persistant stalker, and a bit of witchcraft all play a part in writer/director Pete Ohs's curiously quirky Jethica. Elena (Callie Hernandez) and Jenny (Ashley Denise Robinson) are old friends who haven’t seen each other for a while. When they happen upon each other at a remote gas station in rural New Mexico, they decide it’s too coincidental to just walk away and they drive to Elena’s isolated home for a cup of coffee and a catch up. It comes out that Jenny has been dealing with a stalker named Kevin (Will Madden), and that the trauma from the experience runs deep, but she’s on a healing road trip to try and reset herself and get back to...

There is a certain distance in friendship – where intimacy fades into nostalgia and mutual curiosity – that inspires an openness between souls. It is a liminal state between empathy and apathy; it is also just one of several boundaries explored in “Jethica,” the dark comedy from multi-hyphenate filmmaker Pete Ohs. One-part ghost story, two-parts stalking drama, “Jethica” manages to walk a razor-thin line between competing tones to deliver something shockingly impactful.

The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has made everyday life challenging for everyone. Despite the fact filmmakers have had to drastically change the way movies are made to ensure the safety of their cast and crew, we’ve gotten a slew of pandemic-shot films in the past couple of years. Director Pete Ohs (Everything is Beautiful Far Away) has proven he’s more than capable of making an extraordinarily ambitious movie during a global pandemic. For his new horror comedy Jethica, he not only directed, but he was also the crew, including editing and cinematography, and even collaborated with the cast on the clever script. Jethica is Ohs’ third feature film and is having its World Premiere at this year’s SXSW Film Festival.

Jethica opens with Elena (Callie Hernandez) and her one-night stand having a conversation. She’s not interested in forming a connection with him, but he wants to get to know her. After convincing her to talk about her past, she explains that she ran away to New Mexico to hide because she killed someone while texting and driving. This is how Pete Ohs’ new film Jethica gets moving—by dropping viewers right in the middle of the drama. With its world premiere at SXSW, this supernatural dark comedy offers a refreshing take on the concept of ‘ghosting’—literally and spiritually.
Elena and Jessica (Ashley Denise Robinson) run into one another at a New Mexico gas station. The two haven’t seen one another in some time. Elena invites Jessica to her home for coffee, and at first, she declines but changes her mind and decides to take her up on the offer.

Two women, each fleeing unspecified trauma, holed up in an aluminum-sided mobile home in the middle of a desolate patch of New Mexico flatlands is an apt set-up for a microbudget horror film, but the pleasures and originality of Pete Ohs SXSW-premiering Jethica are in the ways in which it avoids all the more obvious narrative pathways it might have taken. There are no screams or shaky-cam chases, no woman-in-jeopardy jump scares. Instead, Ohs has worked with his actors to […]

Drawing from the world of gaming, writer/director Pete Ohs is embarking on a post-production experiment for his pandemic-shot film, Jethica: live-streaming his edit. “I know that YouTube is overflowing with editing and software tutorials but I’ve never heard of anyone actually editing a movie live,” he writes in an email, and I can’t think of anyone who has done this either. "I'm here to find the great lake of fresh water, and you seem to know a lot about the desert, so..." The Orchard has unveiled an official trailer for an indie gem titled Everything Beautiful Is Far Away, a quirky little lo-fi, sci-fi film about a man and a woman wandering around in a desert. From directors Pete Ohs & Andrea Sisson, this intriguing film is a metaphor for life and relationships, similar (thematically) to Swiss Army Man. I caught this film at the American Film Festival in Poland and it totally won me over (read my full review here). Joseph Cross stars, along with Julia Garner, featuring an appearance by C.S. Lee. It's very hard to describe this film, and even harder to convince anyone to watch it, so hopefully this trailer will get a few of you interested. It's a charming indie discovery that you'll be glad you took the time to enjoy.

This year’s edition of the Los Angeles Film Festival (June 14–22) abounds with directorial debuts and movies that are probably worth seeing for their title alone (“Izzy Gets the Fuck Across Town,” anyone?). As the fest continues to carve its niche in the L.A. film world, it puts increasing emphasis on discovering new talents rather than the best-of-fest strategy that pulls from Sundance and SXSW.
Since you probably don’t need us to tell you about the big titles that have played elsewhere — “The Beguiled,” “Patti Cake$,” “Ingrid Goes West” — here are 10 more out-there selections to seek out. Timing is everything: Laff only screens each movie once.
