One of the aspects of Pixar’s “Turning Red” that the filmmakers are most proud of is the movie’s depiction of Toronto’s Chinatown. Not a Chinatown full of offensive cliches or dangerous stereotypes, but the type of Chinatown that feels real and lived in and true to its real-world counterpart. Director Domee Shi recently spoke about how much this aspect of the film meant to her. And it’s easy to understand why Shi is so proud, especially given the painful representations of Chinatown in the past. TheWrap spoke to production designer Rona Liu about Chinatown in “Turning Red” and how the team was able to capture it so beautifully.

Mark Gustafson and Alexander Bulkley, “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio”
“Pinocchio” is Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of the classic tale of a father’s wish that brings a wooden boy to life. Gustafson is co-director on the film, and “Pinocchio” is his feature debut as director. He found directing with del Toro amicable because “we had very similar sensibilities, so it was ultimately quite easy. We thought about seams, story and character in very much the same way.” Bulkley is a producer on the film and says of the stop-motion style,...

In living rooms around the world, a war is raging between two formidable foes: parents and tweens. Eyes roll. Voices rise. Arguments explode. “You’re not wearing that!” “You call this music?” “You just don’t get it!” The two sides, once close, suddenly feel like they’re speaking a foreign language to each other.
We’ve all felt the dreaded effects of puberty, but not often do we get to examine what’s under the hood, especially through the lens of the female experience. For me, everything changed in my relationship with my mom when I was a teenager. She went from being my best friend to my nemesis. Why and how did that happen? Those questions always burned in the back of my mind, and for some reason the only way I could find the answers was through making films. It isn’t so much that art imitates...

After bringing home an Oscar in 2019 for her animated short Bao, Domee Shi returned to her well of childhood experiences for Turning Red. Due to a family blessing/curse, 13-year-old Chinese Canadian Meilin (Rosalie Chang) transforms into a red panda whenever she experiences strong emotions, which is less than ideal for a teenager. Using Mei as a surrogate character, Shi replicates her childhood experience of struggling to please her mother as she entered adolescence. The film’s portrayal of the mother-daughter relationship sparked dialogues between teens and parents going through the same experience and gave Shi a chance to become closer with her own mother.

The fifth and final season of the Emmy-winning series will bow on April 14, dropping its first three episodes all at once. All subsequent episodes will stream one per week, with the series finale thus slated for May 26. This is a carefully-timed release strategy from Amazon, as Emmy eligibility rules stipulate that six episodes of a season must premiere nationally by May 31 in order for the series to be eligible to compete. Any episodes from a current season that premiere after May 31 would have to compete in the subsequent cycle,...

For Domee Shi, it was incredibly important that the central character of “Turning Red” was a teenager because it was a character that she hadn’t seen in a Disney or Pixar movie. “I was really excited about the opportunity to really showcase and explore the weirdness and specificity of being a teen girl and how everything felt like life or death,” the director tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above).
In addition to having a secret sketchbook, Shi took another crazy part of her teenage years and incorporated it into the movie. “My mom did follow me on my first day of middle school and hid behind a tree with sunglasses on hoping I wouldn’t recognize her. She did not get into a fight with a security guard, thank goodness.”

The stage play adaptation of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's beloved anime classic "Spirited Away" is finally headed to the U.S.! "Spirited Away" follows Chihiro, a 10-year-old girl who is on her way to a new home with her parents. While visiting an abandoned amusement park, Chihiro's parents are turned into pigs while she is sent to work at a magical bathhouse by a sorceress. It is left to Chihiro to find a way out of this magical and haunting place, get her parents back, and return to the normal world.

A video game released in a broken state? Must be a day ending in “Y.” Overwatch 2 is the latest in a long line of titles that received a ton of hype before launch but were crippled by technical issues upon release. The latest issue plaguing the title prevents players from using their favorite characters and leaves them wondering if Blizzard has decided to push the game’s free-to-play mechanics just a bit too far.
When Overwatch 2 launched, the free-to-play game shipped with a roster of over 30 playable heroes, most of which are locked behind a significant barrier of entry. Overwatch newcomers who want to use all of the original game’s characters have to slog through 25 to 50 hours of gameplay, but even that might not...

“A Chinese Canadian tween undergoes magical puberty and turns into a giant red panda.”
As far as elevator pitches go, it’s not exactly “‘Jaws’ in space” or “snakes on a plane.” But that highly specific logline is the one that Domee Shi used to persuade Pixar to greenlight her feature directorial debut, some half a decade ago when the then-20-something was a budding storyboard artist on the studio’s Emeryville campus.
Shi’s film, “Turning Red,” delivers on every bit of that premise, focusing on a confidently nerdy Toronto girl named Mei and her loving yet strict mother, Ming, whose perfectly ordered lives are thrust into chaos by Mei’s sudden transformation. The film was released last spring, and immediately notched a number of milestones for the studio: the first Pixar feature solely directed by a woman, the first Pixar feature with all-female creative leads, and only the...

By the time you read this article, Overwatch 2 will finally be available to download and play. Since the game is free, anyone who skipped on the first entry can finally give this game a try without spending any money. However, since Blizzard decided to alter how players obtain heroes in Overwatch 2, many fans will instead have to spend quite a bit of their time trying to unlock all of the game’s heroes.
Playable characters were the driving force of Overwatch. Each new hero and villain sported a memorable backstory, as well as fantastic art and gameplay design. Blizzard essentially treated each new character as a celebration since then, complete with the introductory cinematics that were released alongside each playable character. In the past, though,...

Argentina’ Pucará Cine has boarded the project, reteaming with lead producer Wooden Boat Productions in the Dominican Republican on director Ulises Porra’s third feature. Both production companies co-produced Porra’s most recent movie, “Carajita” (2021), co-directed by Silvina Schnicer, which won the New Directors award at last year’s San Sebastián, swept Guadalajara, and collected hardware at Argentina’s Mar del Plata and the Miami Film Festival.
Set in 1820, “‘Bajo el mismo sol’ is a historically resonant tale of three “highly contrasting characters,” says Porra – Lázaro, an entrepreneur, son of a rich trader; Mei, a young Chinese woman and expert in silk; and Baptiste, an Haitian army deserter – who battle to create a first silk factory in the Dominican Republic. Following the success of the first film in the Village of Terrors series, the legendary J-Horror director followed up the original Howling Village with his second entry in the series “Suicide Forest Village.” Employing many of the same crew that made the original so much fun and set in the forest of Fuji, where various urban legends such as suicide spots fly around with the motif of a real psychic spot, this second entry in the series sets the stage for the third film to come later this year.
