Charlie Covell might be known for the successful adaptation of the comic series The End of the F***ing World, but the British writer is currently working on a new show for Netflix, which is going to be released later this year. Kaos is an original work by Covell that is going to be a fantastic, mythology-inspired black comedy that will follow the adventures of Ancient Greek gods in a modern setting. Ahead of this year’s premiere – a release window has not been specified, as of the time of writing – Netflix has released the first trailer for the series as well.
Kaos is going to have eight episodes, as has been confirmed by the streaming service, and will see legendary actor Jeff Goldblum as the ruler of the Greek pantheon, Zeus; Goldblum replaced Hugh Grant, who was initially attached to the role. You can check out what Goldblum looks like...

You know Zeus. Greek god of thunder, curly hair, luscious big beard, turns into a swan? You’ve seen his face on statues in parks and on tile mosaics behind the counter in kebab shops.
That’s not the Zeus in Netflix’s new fantasy drama Kaos, from Charlie Covell, screenwriter of The End of the F***ing World. As played by Jeff Goldblum, the Zeus of Kaos looks more Tony Soprano than beardy all-father. And home-of-the-gods Mount Olympus? Think a lavishly appointed mansion such as you might see on Selling Sunset instead of a bucolic paradise crawling with nymphs and fauns.
Covell’s vision of Greek myth clearly comes with a modern twist, hence Zeus’ Casio watch and leisure suit collection in the first teaser trailer below:
As Goldblum explained at a recent Netflix slate preview event: “One may say it’s about the Gods, but a different version of the Gods.

Violent crime drama Gangs of London is back for a third series, the cast has been confirmed.
After revitalising action cinema with the two astonishing martial arts films in The Raid franchise, Gareth Evans turned to television, co-creating Gangs of London with Matt Flannery in 2019.
A sprawling crime saga, the show follows the Wallace family as they grapple to keep control of their criminal empire. And we’ve had two series of it so far, with plenty of memorable moments to talk about.
The show became known for its notoriously violent action scenes, which are as visceral and gory as anything seen in a big screen slasher. Unsurprisingly, given Evans’ involvement, the work that went into those scenes was really quite something. And now, with season three confirmed and on its way, we wait to see

Brutal British crime drama Gangs of London is back for a second series on Sky Atlantic and Now, with a release date of 20th October in the UK and 17th November in the US, and it’s looking as dark and gritty as ever.
When the explosive first series launched in April 2020, this story of the turbulent power struggles of London’s criminal underworld – centring on the Wallace family and various other international gangs – was an instant hit, at the time becoming Sky Atlantic’s second-biggest original drama launch behind Chernobyl. As dramas go it’s a thrilling powerhouse of a series, full of epic fight scenes and twisty narrative, and certainly isn’t for the faint-hearted gore-wise.
Now it’s back for a second series, fans will certainly be looking forward to seeing their unanswered questions resolved, as well as being introduced to new players in this savage power game.

This fall, Arab filmmakers will be out in force at such prestigious international fests as Venice and Toronto. Venice alone boasts six features from first- and second-time Arab directors in its official sections, plus an additional six works-in-progress at its Final Cut Production Bridge. Meanwhile, Toronto opens with “The Swimmers,” a drama from U.K. helmer Sally El Hosaini based on the journey of Syrian sisters and Olympic hopefuls Yusra and Sara Mardini, who fled the war in their home country for Germany. Yusra competed in the 2016 and 2021 Summer Olympics. An additional six Arab films will screen at the Canadian fest.

Doctor Who might be a cultural phenomenon that’s lasted 55 years and counting, but its spinoffs have been a mixed bag in terms of success. Torchwood is a cult favorite to this day, but it only managed four seasons before slipping off the air. The Sarah Jane Adventures, meanwhile, was a family-friendly hit for five years until star Elisabeth Sladen sadly passed away. Lastly, Class arrived to little fanfare in 2016 and quickly disappeared after one season.
Thanks to the good people at Big Finish Productions, though, it’s now getting a new lease on life in the audio medium. Following on from its revival of Torchwood, and all-new adventures for David Tennant’s Doctor, the company’s resurrecting the teen-oriented spinoff for at least two boxsets of three brand new stories, with the original cast of the show returning to reprise their roles.

An exchange between two of the teen protagonists in BBC America’s “Doctor Who” spinoff “Class” takes place a little over halfway through the season and exemplifies some of the series’ unique strengths:
Ram, trying to explain his Sikh religion: “We believe the important thing in your life is to do good action. But if you do the good action, somewhere in the process there’s got to be God, even if you don’t have faith or believe that there’s some dude out there looking after you. Isn’t doing a good thing, one human to another, the closest we’re going to get to God?”
April: “And what about the bad things we do, one human to another?”

I suspect I am not the only viewer that greeted the news of Doctor Who spin-off Class with a sizeable helping of scepticism. The Steven Moffat seasons of the parent show have been patchy, to say the least, and the premise for this spin-off sounded an awful lot like Buffy The Vampire Slayer. But, that scepticism has now given way to excitement, as the full-length trailer reveals potential for a gripping, self-aware drama that incorporates the very best essence of Doctor Who.
Starring Greg Austin (Mr Selfridge), Fady Elsayed (Penny Dreadful), Sophie Hopkins (Since We Last), Vivian Oparah, and Katherine Kelly (Mr Selfridge), Class also boasts a brief appearance by The Doctor himself – Peter Capaldi – in the pilot episode.

He can travel through space and he can travel through time but he can’t always be there when you need him. So says “Doctor Who” star Peter Capaldi in the first teaser trailer for BBC America’s spin-off of their popular series, entitled “Class.” Although Capaldi won’t show up in every episode of the new sci-fi-tinged series, his presence will likely linger over all of it, and he takes center stage in this snappy little slice of things to come.

There's a scene early on in Brotherhood, the concluding chapter in Noel Clarke's British Hood trilogy, in which his Sam Peel checks himself out in a changing room mirror after a rigorous gym session. He ends up sadly patting his emerging belly and you realise that whatever his original intentions for this series, Sam has become his Rocky Balboa.
Having played the antagonist in 2006's Kidulthood and then switched gears in the hit 2008 sequel Adulthood to show the difficulties of that character's life after being released from prison, Brotherhood ties up a lot of loose ends but also rediscovers Sam a little further down the line, much like Sylvester Stallone brought back his most iconic character in Rocky Balboa or Creed. The British urban drama gets an intriguing twist in this story of two brothers from an Egyptian family attempting to escape the gang culture that pollutes their East London estate. James Floyd delivers a standout performance as the charismatic Rashid, a smalltime drug dealer who is determined that his younger brother Mo (Fady Elsayed) isn't going to follow in his footsteps. Director Sally El Hosaini has crafted a grimly authentic glimpse into gang lore which also has the courage to tackle the vexed question of sexuality in a risibly macho culture.

Editor’s note: Scott’s review originally ran during last year’s Berlinale Film Festival, but we’re re-running it now as the film opens today in limited theatrical release. With its social pressures and troubled definitions of manhood backed into a corner, Sally El Hosaini‘s My Brother the Devil gropes toward acceptance with two characters seeking to define or redefine who they are and how they see themselves. Like most things, the difficulty often lies in how others see them. It’s an hebetic flick where religion, sexuality and socio-economic status all collide to muddy the waters of the East End. That’s where Rashid (James Floyd) and his little brother Mo (Fady Elsayed) live with a mother who is obliviously sweet and a father who is only present long enough to berate them. Rashid is a drug dealer popular with the neighborhood and with his boys. Mo idolizes him, but...

Title: My Brother the Devil Director: Sally El Hosaini Starring: James Floyd, Fady Elsayed, Said Taghmaoui, Elarica Gallacher, Leemore Marrett, Jr. Playing like a M.I.A. song come to life, Sally El Hosaini’s British import “My Brother the Devil” transcends the gangland melodrama of its roots courtesy of a convincingly sketched setting, and rich veins of class identity, faith, political belief and sexual identity, all of which jostle and compete with the main narrative plotlines for attention. In the ethnically mixed and socioeconomically depressed Hackney neighborhood of London, teenager Mo (Fady Elsayed) idolizes his charismatic older brother Rashid (James Floyd), a low-level drug peddler. The death of a friend, however, triggers [ Read More ]

Delivering an alternately striking and ominous vision of gangland London, My Brother the Devil, the directorial debut from British-Egyptian director Sally El Hosaini, is an excellent film. Abstaining from all-encompassing grimness and moroseness in favour of character-driven showcases of potency, it’s rewarding, gripping and the best film of this young year.
The story is made up of familiar parts – ones we’ve seen in other gang-centric entities from HBO’s The Wire to City of God – but El Hosaini’s vision is one of complexity, nuance and moreover is a film that approaches those tropes with distinction. For most audiences My Brother the Devil will provide a unique fusion of cultures. The intermittently bleak aesthetic of London meets the violent, drug-peddling gangs of the projects and more specifically the Arab ethnicities caught in the mix.

Most of them fit a stereotype, however, and you can usually see where the movie is going long before it gets there. This is just one way in which the new film "My Brother the Devil" differs from the model. Set in the low-income part of town known as Hackney, the film is about two brothers, Rashid (James Floyd) and Mo (Fady Elsayed), whose parents are native Egyptians, but who are both the product of the London streets. Better the Devil You Know: Hosaini’s Debut a Vibrant Urban Street Drama
Sally El Hosaini’s directorial debut, My Brother the Devil, takes the overly familiar gangland drama genre and manages to make an engaging and effective film with well written characters and striking visuals. Thankfully, due to considerable awards recognition on the festival circuit, her film will see a theatrical release stateside, which isn’t always the case for similarly themed titles, as even Ben Drew’s street drama iLL Manors has yet to be released here. However, Hosaini’s film, which manages to avoid sinking into a swamp of miserabalism, also doesn’t shy away from the shocking violence that infiltrates the lives of youth in London’s East End, and treats us to a finale that is neither tragic nor overtly positive.
