"A girl. A mixtape. And the end of the world." The Orchard has released the first official trailer for an indie cosmic horror film titled Starfish, which is the feature debut of musician/filmmaker A.T. White. The originally premiered at Fantastic Fest last fall, and also played at the Morbido Film Fest in Mexico. Starfish is described as a "unique, intimate and honest" portrayal of a girl grieving for the death of her best friend. And it just happens to take place on the day the world ends as we know it, when a mysterious signal from an unknown dimension summons the end of days. Virginia Gardner stars as Aubrey, who discovers a tape labeled "this mixtape will save the world." Forced to fight off the encroaching creatures, she sets out to find more tapes and (hopefully?) save the world. Also starring Christina Masterson, Eric Beecroft, Natalie Mitchell, Shannon Hollander,...

Dutch horror films don’t get any more on-brand than The Windmill. Maybe a horror movie about the little Dutch boy who plugged that dam and saved Holland? Nah. Big, wooden windmills acting as a gateway to Hell screams Dutch horror, much like the Australian main character, the Asian sidekick….alright, there’s a bit more diversity past locale stereotyping. In any case, director Nick Jongerius spills buckets of gore all over the Netherlands, as a demon dispatches sinners with his all-healing scythe. Heads roll in the name of soulful enlightenment, because karma is quite the bitch in this European slasher import. Grab your clogs and throw on a poncho, because Holland’s hottest sightseeing tour is about to get messy. Like messy/gory, but also messy scripting, and messy crafting.
The film’s protagonist ends up being Jennifer (Charlotte Beaumont), a homeless Aussie transplant who just got outted as being an illegal.

In his new film, The Windmill, Nick Jongerius transforms one of Holland's picturesque tourist attractions into a hub of blood-soaked horror. With XLrator Media releasing The Windmill on VOD and iTunes this Tuesday, followed by a theatrical release on October 28th, we caught up with Jongerius for our latest Q&A feature.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Nick. When did you first come up with the idea for The Windmill?
Nick Jongerius: My pleasure. Thanks for your interest in the film. I first started thinking about the idea for this film after Frankenstein's Army. Our investors at that time were really interested in Holland, especially Amsterdam—the dikes, windmills, clogs, etc. This triggered me. I thought, "What if we use these famous touristic symbols of Holland and drench them in blood? Sort of turning it upside down. From there we shot a proof of concept,...

XLrator Media, the distribution company behind John Ridley’s “Jimi: All is By My Side,” “The Machine,” and more, will soon release the new horror film “The Windmill,” starring Noah Taylor, best known for his performances in “Game of Thrones,” “Almost Famous,” and “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.” The film follows a group of unsuspecting tourists who discover a mysterious evil while traveling through the Dutch countryside. When their bus breaks down, they’re forced to seek shelter besides a windmill where supposedly a Satan-obsessed miller grinds peoples’ bones instead of grain. It co-stars Charlotte Beaumont (“Jupiter Ascending”), Patrick Baladi (“Rush”), Tanroh Ishida (“The Railway Man”) and Ben Batt (“Captain America: The First Avenger”). Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

"Without windmills, there would be no Holland." XLrator Media has debuted the first official trailer for indie horror The Windmill, originally known as The Windmill Massacre, from The Netherlands. The film is about an Australian girl escaping her past visiting The Netherlands, where she ends up on a tourist bus taking people to all the famous windmills in the country. The bus breaks down near an infamous windmill where "legend has it, a Devil-worshiping miller once ground the bones of locals instead of grain" and people begin to disappear. The cast includes Charlotte Beaumont, Noah Taylor, Patrick Baladi, Ben Batt, Tanroh Ishida and Fiona Hampton. This seems like it might be fun, with plenty of gore for horror fans. One review says this film "isn't your average slasher" so don't expect the usual going in. Check it out below. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Nick Jongerius' The Windmill,...

A particular subgenre I've enjoyed from an early age thanks to my father's influence is war movies, including the classics -- The Bridge on the River Kwai, Kelly's Heroes and The Dirty Dozen topped our list -- with a particular fondness for prisoner-of-war tales including Victory and Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. I find the stories of brave servicemen who overcome torturous emotional and physical conditions to be inspiring testaments to courage and bravery.
Directed by Jonathan Teplitzky, the movie The Railway Man portrays such a character, Eric Lomax (Colin Firth). It's based on the real-life story of a British army officer and radio engineer who was captured with his unit during the fall of Singapore in 1942. The prisoners of war were used to build the railroad from Burma to Siam through rough terrain, under brutal conditions.

Railway Man is a tale of revenge and redemption in the trappings of a WWII melodrama. The true tale jumps back and forth between 1942 and 1980 to tell the story about one man forced to deal with his horrible memories of the atrocities of war. The Railway Man is a sober, well-meaning picture that aims to raise serious issues about truth and justice, but it’s ultimately undone by its own earnestness and predictability.
In 1980 Eric Lomax (Colin Firth) is a socially awkward rail enthusiast (not a trainspotter, he clarifies) who travels around the UK with a detailed knowledge about train timetables and British towns. Eric meets nurse Patti (Nicole Kidman) on a train and after a whirlwind romance, they are married. But after the honeymoon Eric is waking up in the night sweating and screaming – it’s the emotional distress caused by his treatment at the hands of Japanese prison...

Almost entirely ignores the amazing aspect of this true story that makes it worth telling, and even the very good performances point us in another direction than the intended one. I’m “biast” (pro): like the cast; enjoy stories about WWII
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
The Railway Man starts out like a sweet little romance, when Colin Firth meets Nicole Kidman, somewhere near Edinburgh in 1980, on a train he’s only on because his encyclopedic knowledge of train schedules is allowing him to compensate for an unexpected delay in his travel plans. “I’m not a trainspotter,” he assures her — and us — not that most prototypical of British nerds; “I’m a railway enthusiast.” Later, he is able to contrive a second meeting with her because of his, yes, trainspotting superpower.

Directed by Jonathan Teplitzky and based on the autobiography of Eric Lomax, the man behind the nickname of the title character, The Railway Man is yet another traditionally told period piece, elevated due to a wonderfully effective story and strong lead performances from Colin Firth and Jeremy Irvine. We're first introduced to Lomax (Firth) as a middle-aged British Army veteran of World War II. He's obviously a quiet man, but there are no visible physical or emotional scars, and for the time being his life is about to take a turn for the better. A chance meeting with a woman, Patti (Nicole Kidman), aboard a train results in love at first sight. The two eventually marry and find a house together, but the horrors of war can't elude him forever. It's never quite clear if Eric told Patti about his time in the British Army, but she's soon made well...

Based on a remarkable autobiography, The Railway Man tells the extraordinary and epic true story of Eric Lomax (Colin Firth), a British Army officer who is tormented as a prisoner of war at a Japanese labor camp during World War II. Decades later, Lomax discovers that the Japanese interpreter he holds responsible for much of his treatment is still alive and sets out to confront him, and his haunting past, in this powerful tale of survival, love and redemption. Nicole Kidman, Jeremy Irvine, Stellan Skarsgard, Sam Reid, Tanroh Ishida and Hiroyuki Sanada co-star.

Colin Firth in The Railway ManPhoto: Lionsgate I caught Jonathan Teplitzky's The Railway Man at the Toronto Film Festival and despite the fact it's another traditionally told WWII period piece, there's an elegance to its telling and the performances from all involved -- Colin Firth, Jeremy Irvine, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tanroh Ishida and Nicole Kidman -- are quite good as it tells a story of revenge, retribution and reconciliation. After nine days in Toronto for the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, I finally arrived home in Seattle late in the evening on Friday, September 13, and have been trying to catch up ever since. I still have one review to write for Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises, but managed to post 26 reviews from the festival and just below is a recap of all 26 with my teaser for each review, the grade and a few words to sort of put a capper on the festival as we now move full steam ahead into Oscar season. Speaking of Oscar season, following this recap I'm going to be going straight into work on updating my Oscar predictions. There is a lot of moving and shuffling that needs to be done after not only the Toronto, but Telluride and Venice Film Festivals and with the New York Film Festival right around the corner. Exciting times folks.

The always dependable Colin Firth has done it all in his movie roles: He’s melted hearts, fought in wars, and coped with post-traumatic stress. In The Railway Man, however, he does all three.
The Railway Man tells the story of Eric Lomax (Firth), a veteran tormented by memories of his time in Japanese captivity in Singapore during World War II, forced to work on the brutal Thai-Burma Railway. Based on Lomax’s memoir, the film chronicles his return to find his torturer, Nagase (Hiroyuki Sanada), and his attempts to overcome his trauma.

Fresh from making its world premiere out in Toronto at the end of last week, the first trailer has landed online for Jonathan Teplitzky’s The Railway Man, giving us our first good look at Colin Firth in the historical drama.
Firth takes the lead as the eponymous railway enthusiast, and with Nicole Kidman starring opposite in the female lead, the awards buzz is already beginning to swirl.
Eric Lomax (Colin Firth) is a quiet, middle-aged radio and railway enthusiast. He meets kind, sunny Patti (Nicole Kidman) one afternoon on a Scottish train. The year is 1983. A whirlwind courtship and wedding follow, but on their wedding night, and for many nights to come, Eric succumbs to graphic, paralyzing nightmares. He provides Patti no explanation.
Confused and hurt by her new husband’s remoteness, Patti turns to Eric’s friend Finlay (Stellan Skarsgård), who finally discloses her husband’s harrowing secret:...

The producers and distributors of The Railway Man are showing great faith in the drama starring Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman by scheduling it for December 26, arguably the most competitive date in the calendar.
Directed by Jonathan Teplitzky, the film is based on a memoir by Eric Lomax, who, as a prisoner-of-war was forced to work on the construction of the Thai/Burma railway during WW2. Years later he confronted the Japanese soldier who tormented him.
The Australia/UK co-production had been due to open on October 24. Transmission Films announced the new release date today, which means it will compete with a raft of other openers including The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Ben Stiller.s comedy/drama The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Alexander Payne.s Nebraska, Stephen Frears. Philomena, Steve McQueen.s 12 Years a Slave and Chilean director Sebastián Lelio.s Gloria.
