The 40th Annual Saturn Awards were held this past Thursday, June 26th, and a what great show it was from (as Johnny Carson used to say) "beautiful downtown Burbank"! Here's the full list of winners and more.
Actually, we were high above the city at the famous Castaway restaurant and banquet hall. The Saturn Awards has been held here for the past few years, and it really is a fabulous venue with the best views of the San Fernando Valley anywhere.
Among the winners are Dread Central favorites "The Walking Dead," "Hannibal," The Conjuring, and Vera Farmiga's no holds barred performance as Norma Bates in "Bates Motel." The eye candy and updates from the carpet come from director Neil Marshall; the Curse of Chucky crew - Don Mancini, Brad Dourif, and Fiona Dourif; Insidious 3's Lin Shaye; and more. There's even some Ghostbusters 3 non-news!

★★☆☆☆ Zombie movies, including Marc Forster's recently released blockbuster offering World War Z (2013), can often become overly tied to generic conventions. Adversely, however, what's most enjoyable about genre filmmaking is how directors bend and flex those boundaries. Sadly, Forster - still bemoaned for helming limp Bond entry Quantum Of Solace (2008) - fails to make full use of the material at hand, giving us at best a conventional zombie action flick, and at worst a tiresome bore with a bloated budget. Bratt Pitt plays Gerry Lane, the epitome of the family man, now retired from his career as a Un investigator.
We first meet Gerry in his happy Philadelphia home, making pancakes for his cherubic daughters Constance (Sterling Jerins) and Rachel (Abigail Hargrove), as well as wife Karin (Mireille Enos). On what should be a happy drive to work, the city is swarmed with extremely agile, flesh-eating creatures. This results in...

Everyone seems to love zombies these days. When I student taught, my eighth graders all wanted to write zombie apocalypse stories, fueled by AMC’s Walking Dead, countless video games, and numerous movies. Of course, to me, a zombie is far more supernatural, far rarer and the stuff of myth and legend. As a result, I’ve never really cottoned to these undead that owe more to George A. Romero’s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead than voodoo tradition. That said, every now and then one of these tales rises to the top and screams for your attention.
Max Brooks’ clever account World War Z was one of those stories, a survival journal that was nicely written. As a result, it was optioned and after its troubled production, arrived this summer to beat expectations and prove to be an engaging bit of popcorn entertainment. Leave beside the dramatic issues plaguing it during production,...

World War Z sequel planned? (Photo: Brad Pitt turns into a zombie-targeting axe-murderer in World War Z) Following the early success of Marc Forster and Brad Pitt’s zombie movie World War Z, Paramount Pictures "actively will turn to developing a sequel," claims The Hollywood Reporter, citing studio vice chairman Rob Moore. However, the Reporter article features no Moore quotes explicitly stating that Paramount has actually given the go-ahead to World War Z 2 — or whatever a World War Z sequel would be called. Co-produced by Paramount and Skydance Productions, the $220-$230 million-budgeted zombie movie (minus rebates and tax breaks, its official budget goes down to $190-$200 million) debuted this past weekend in North America and 25 international territories, collecting an estimated worldwide total of $112.21 million: $66.41 million in the Us/Canada (behind Monsters University‘s $82.42 million) and an estimated $45.8 million internationally (behind Man of Steel‘s $89 million and Monsters University‘s $54.5 million...

Monsters University and World War Z box office: Monsters hungry for knowledge and zombies hungry for humans bring down Man of Steel Here’s a quick rundown of this past weekend, June 21-23, 2013, at the North American box office. If studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo are on target, Pixar / Disney’s Monsters University surpassed expectations, grossing $82 million at 4,4004 locations. Approximately 30% of the gross came from 3D shows. (Image: Monsters University artwork.) Directed by Dan Scanlon, Monsters University features the voices of John Goodman, Helen Mirren, Billy Crystal, Nathan Fillion, Aubrey Plaza, Steve Buscemi, John Krasinski, Peter Sohn, Dave Foley, Sean Murray, Bonnie Hunt, Julia Sweeney, Sean Hayes, Alfred Molina, Tyler Labine, Bill Hader, Bob Peterson, and John Ratzenberger. Screenplay credit for the Monsters, Inc. sequel has gone to director Scanlon, Daniel Gerson, and Robert L. Baird. World War Z weekend box office: Monsters rule, but zombies are the big surprise hit (photo: Brad Pitt in World War Z) World War Z, Brad Pitt, and his living-dead pals have turned out to be the big (happy) surprise at the North American box office this weekend, June 21-23, 2013. In case Friday’s estimates are on target, the $190-$200 million-budgeted World War Z should collect $57-$60 million by Sunday evening, or about $10-$15 million more than many pundits had been expecting. Yesterday, World War Z opened with $25 million — about $5 million above early estimates — from 3,607 locations according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. That figure includes $3.6 million from Thursday evening screenings. In case there’s a Saturday surge for Marc Forster’s Paramount-distributed PG-13 zombie movie, World War Z could actually go quite a bit beyond the $60 million mark. That’s good news for the studio and for producer Brad Pitt,...

World War Z box office vs. Monsters University vs. Man of Steel (photo: Brad Pitt in World War Z) The North American box office will be huge this weekend, June 21-23, 2013. You’ve surely read that elsewhere, and it’s no exaggeration. The combined gross of the top three movies alone — Monsters University, World War Z, Man of Steel — should hover around $180 million. Now, what remains to be seen is if there’ll be any dollars (whether Canadian or American) left for the dozens of other movies on North American screens. It’s like having huge supermarkets making little neighborhood stores disappear from view. But hey, that seems to be exactly what the moviegoing public wants. According to early, rough estimates found at Deadline.com, Disney / Pixar’s Monsters University will easily top the domestic box office following a Friday gross around $25-$28 million, in addition to $2.6 million from Thursday evening screenings.

Brazil protests lead Brad Pitt to cancel World War Z promo trip in Rio Brad Pitt has canceled plans to come to Brazil to promote World War Z, which opens in that country on June 28, 2013. Pitt was expected to arrive later tonight, June 21, with daughters Shiloh and Zahara, according to the Rio de Janeiro daily O Globo. The reason for Pitt’s cancellation are the “Brazil Protests,” a wave of demonstrations that last night brought approximately one million Brazilians to the streets, protesting against police brutality, government and corporate corruption, dismal public services, and billions of public money being spent on state-of-the-art facilities for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games while the country’s health and education infrastructure is crumbling. World War Z distributor Paramount Pictures has made no pronouncements regarding Brad Pitt’s decision, adding only that director Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace, Finding Neverland) will also no...

World War Z and Monsters University are moderately entertaining, but People's critic says A Hijacking delivers the most thrills. Here's you guide to what to see and what to skip at the movies this weekend. See This• World War Z The trick to enjoying World War Z is to let the zombies win. Led by Brad Pitt, the zombie blockbuster World War Z is finally hitting cinemas today, and we’re looking forward to seeing how the numbers rack up at the box office.
The film has some very strong competition from Pixar’s Monsters University, which opens in the States today as well, along with Zack Snyder’s immense Man of Steel, which is heading into its second weekend following a record-breaking debut.
Despite early negative press, Marc Forster’s zombie film has been gaining some traction in recent weeks. And with Brad Pitt taking centre stage in a film unlike any we’ve seen from him before, I’m confident that audiences will be heading out to see World War Z at the multiplex. And to help them get there, Paramount have released two new clips to showcase a bit of the action we’ve got coming our way this weekend.

Film: "World War Z"; Director: Marc Forster; Cast: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, James Badge Dale, Ludi Boeken, Matthew Fox, Fana Mokoena, David Morse, Elyes Gabel, Peter Capaldi, Sterling Jerins and Abigail Hargrove; Rating: **
"World War Z" is a subtle combination of a medical thriller and a horror film. Packed with fleetingly captivating emotional moments and mobs of panic-stricken people running from something we cannot see, the film evokes mixed reaction.
Inspired by, if not really based on Max Brooks' novel with the same name, the story is about zombie - Apocalypse.
Director Marc Froster wastes no time.

World War Z: Zombies movie offers ‘Breathtaking’ overhead shots [See previous post: "World War Z Review: Saved by Zombies."] These early scenes establish the speed and sheer number of undead and also unveil some visual go-to’s developed by Marc Forster (of the dreadful Quantum of Solace) and DPs Robert Richardson (who started the project) and Ben Seresin (who finished it and received sole credit). The most breathtaking are the overhead shots, oftentimes from a helicopter’s Pov, showing thousands of zombies filling the streets like floodwater. They figure prominently in the movie’s best section, when Gerry travels to Israel to investigate why the Israelis sensed the coming zombie invasion early enough to build a wall around Jerusalem. (Photo: World War Z zombies try to climb Jerusalem wall.) But since World War Z isn’t very interested in exploring the effects of a zombie takeover on social or religious order, the Israeli scenes, enlivened by eye-level shots of...

Brad Pitt landing in an apocalyptic zombie thriller like World War Z may sound like a waste of his acting talents but he grounds the horror adventure with more dramatic heft than all the other summer 2013 blockbusters combined. Pitt delivers plenty of action as Gerry Lane, a former United Nations troubleshooter called upon to find the cause of a zombie epidemic threatening to destroy mankind. Lane is a reluctant hero, who only agrees to lead the U. S. military mission in order to guarantee the safety of his wife Karin (Mireille Enos) and young daughters Rachel (Abigail Hargrove) and Constance (Sterling). Pitt also makes Lane a pessimistic hero, which makes his journey somewhat believable despite the end-of-the-world context of the movie.

With Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt as his parents, it's no surprise Maddox Jolie-Pitt has caught the acting bug. On Monday, Pitt and the 11-year-old celebrated the U.S. premiere of World War Z - Maddox makes a cameo in his dad's film as a zombie. After Pitt walked the red carpet, the pair attended the Samsung sponsored after-party at Catch restaurant, a Meatpacking district hotspot. At the soiree, Pitt was visibly in a great mood. The actor held a drink in his hand, happily talked to everyone that approached him and posed for countless photos. He greeted actress and...

Brad Pitt is just a few weeks away from returning to the multiplex in World War Z, which promises to be the zombie blockbuster of the year, unlike anything the genre has seen before.
The latest poster arrived at the start of the week, giving us a look at Pitt ushering his on-screen family to safety. And following on nicely from that come six new banners, via Total Film, in which we get a look at why he’s so concerned about his family, showing us the destruction that’s taken hold all over the globe.
United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments, and threatening to decimate humanity itself.
Pitt stars alongside an excellent cast, led by Mireille Enos, James Badge Dale, Lucy Aharish, Matthew Fox, Bryan Cranston, Abigail Hargrove, Sterling Jerins, and David Morse.

The zombie blockbuster of the year hits theatres in just under a month, and with Brad Pitt front and centre, I can’t wait to see how World War Z unfolds.
We’ve already had one box office-topping zombie movie this year in Jonathan Levine’s Warm Bodies, and it will be interesting to see if World War Z will be the second this summer. It will of course be facing some tough competition with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel playing in only its second week, which is exactly why it’s going to be interesting to see how the numbers come in in mid-June.
We’ve already seen a handful of action-packed new TV spots this week. And now we’ve got a new poster to share, similar in style to the poster we saw last month, but this time showing Brad Pitt, gun at the ready, on...

With Brad Pitt front and centre for the zombie blockbuster, there’s no way that I’m not seeing World War Z when it hits the cinema. The film promises to be a zombie movie quite unlike any we’ve seen before, going for the huge scope that’s relatively unknown to the typically lower-budgeted genre.
I’ve been hugely impressed by all that we’ve seen from the film so far, and its June release date can’t come fast enough in my books. And with that date fast approaching, Paramount have released two action-packed new TV spots, giving us another great look at some of the explosive sequences in the movie.

Paramount have already been having a strong year at the box office so far, most recently debuting Star Trek Into Darkness in UK cinemas ahead of the blockbuster’s release in the Us this Friday. And with Abrams’ blockbuster all but guaranteed success, eyes will soon start turning to the next film on the studio’s slate: World War Z.

Led by the ever-brilliant Brad Pitt, World War Z promises to be one of the year’s best blockbusters.
Outside of the Resident Evil franchise, it’s the first big-budget zombie movie we’ve seen in some time. And having recently debuted an awesome new trailer last month, followed by a great IMAX poster, the anticipation is definitely on the rise for its summer release.

We’re less than three months from World War Z landing on the big screen, and it’s starting to look more and more like Paramount have got a big hit on their hands. The stakes are high for the studio, with high production costs and expensive re-shoots putting the budget up higher than anticipated.
But with Brad Pitt taking the lead in this zombie blockbuster, we’re expecting the box office numbers to be big.
