Dissident Iranian director Jafar Panahi has launched an impassioned appeal for production designer Leila Naghdipari to be released from jail following her recent arrest during demonstrations marking the one year anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death.
Naghdipari was one of hundreds of Iranians arrested on Sept. 16 during widespread protests marking the anniversary of Amini’s death while being detained for allegedly violating the country’s hijab law that mandates covered hair.
“Today, Iranian independent cinema is more that ever struggling to breathe under the boots of the security forces,” Panahi said in his appeal.
Panahi added that it’s been more than 10 days since the arrest of Naghdipari, who was the production designer on his 2018 film “Three Faces,” a road trip through the repressive territory of patriarchal rural Iran. New features from Mexican director Amat Escalante and Mexican-San Salvadoran filmmaker Tatiana Huezo are among the 28 feature projects selected for the fifth edition of European Work in Progress Cologne (Ewip), the industry pitching event held from October 17-19 in the run-up to Film Festival Cologne.
Escalante will pitch Lost In The Night, about a man searching for those responsible for his mother’s disappearance, who encounters an incompetent justice system.
The Mexico-Germany-Netherlands-Denmark co-production is produced by Nicolas Celis and Fernanda de la Peza for Tres Tunas Cine. Escalante has previously directed four features including Venice and Toronto 2016 horror The Untamed.

There is something incredibly frustrating about being able to predict a film’s final scene long before it happens. Not only that this actually is the case in Majid Barzegar’s drama “The Rain Falls Where It Will”, but you’ll end up impatiently waiting for the confirmation of your supernatural ability to see in the future. There’s a brief moment of “ha! I knew it!” before the actual disappointment sinks in. It’s not something you hoped for to happen, you just knew it would, which proves to be a pity for a very simple reason – Barzegar’s fourth feature is beautiful in many ways. It is not just the lensing by the cinematographer Masud Amini Tirani that leaves a strong impression, this is also the case with the set- and costume design, both signed by Leila Naghdi Pari; her impact on the visual stength of the film is undeniable,...

It’s initially strange to think that Instagram would be our primary source for these expressions, but ask yourself this: what format better fits a disenfranchised artist hoping to communicate with the world? It’s to our fortune that he’s expanded the response by producing his first (or first-seen) real follow-up to last year’s Taxi. Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 13: Iranian film "Parviz", directed by Majid Barzegar, bagged the Golden Crow Pheasant Award for the best feature film at the 18th edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (Iffk) that ended here Friday.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who also holds the cinema portfolio, gave away the awards to the winners.
The best film has a cash prize of Rs.15 lakh (approximately $30,000) and is shared equally between the director and the producer of the film.
Bangladeshi director Kamaleswar Mukherjee bagged the best director award for his film "Meghe Dhaka Tara".

Indian feature project “Wild Fire” by Bikas Ranjan Mishra* has been selected to receive the Hubert Bals Fund for script development from the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
The fund selected 11 projects from nine countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Wild Fire was also selected for Cinemart, the international co production market of the festival in January this year.
A selection of film projects supported by the Hbf will also participate in Boost!, the coaching trajectory of the Hbf, CineMartand Rotterdam Lab, in cooperation with Binger FilmLab. This year, three new partners will join the initiative: the National Film Development Corporation of India, Fundacion TyPA in Argentina and the Durban FilmMart in South Africa. Supported by Media Mundus, every year five Hbf-supported filmmakers are given the possibility to further develop their scripts at Binger Filmlab. The fifth edition of the Bengaluru International Film Festival will hold retrospectives of Girish Kasaravalli and Jahnu Barua among others. Five of Kasaravalli’s films: Tabarana Kathe (1986), Kraurya (1996), Thaayi Saheba (1997), Dweepa (2003) and Hasina (2004)will be screened. While Barua’s Halodhia Choraye Baodhan Khai (1987), Banani (1990), Firingoti (1992) and Hkhagoroloi Bohu Door(1995) will be screened.

The third annual Pan-Asia Film Festival took place in London this month (March 2nd-13th). The event is organised by Asia House, a cultural centre that hosts a variety of events throughout the year, designed to promote understanding and exchange between Europe and Asia.
Although the Pan-Asia Film Festival presented just one film per day, with no repeat screenings, the programme reflected a good range of contemporary Asian cinema, both in terms of genre and country of origin.
