Santa Claus won’t be the only mythical figure sliding down chimneys this holiday season! John Woo is getting in on the home invasion action now that Lionsgate is bringing Silent Night to PVOD on December 19. Please buy extra milk and cookies this year. I hear Woo likes Macaroons and Snickerdoodles. While that’s probably inaccurate, he strikes me as a man of taste. It’s been 20 years since Woo’s last American movie, so this is a big deal.
“From legendary director John Woo and the producer of John Wick comes the gritty revenge tale of a tormented father (Joel Kinnaman) who witnesses his young son die when caught in a gang’s crossfire on Christmas Eve,” reads the official synopsis. “While recovering from a wound that costs him his voice, Kinnaman makes vengeance his life’s mission and embarks on a punishing training regimen in order to avenge his son’s death.

This year’s limited program writing Emmy contest is unique in that it is the first in five years to include any TV movies at all and the first in 13 years to involve three of them. The one-off narrative specials in the running for this honor are “Fire Island,” “Prey,” and “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” all of which are also nominated for Best TV Movie, and the middle of which has achieved the rare feat of concurrently being recognized for its directing.
While all three of these telefilms stand as relatively strong contenders, this writing race is being very comfortably led by “Beef,” which is the only program that can possibly win all seven of this year’s major limited series Emmys. Putting up fights of their own are the miniseries “Fleishman is in Trouble” and “Swarm,” which both also face “Beef” in the corresponding lead actress and contemporary costumes categories.

Joel Kim Booster is here, queer, and ready for the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to give the Writers Guild of America a fair deal.
As a producer and writer, he’s one of the comedic voices behind some of the funniest shows on TV. He’s a credited writer on Billy on the Street, Big Mouth, and The Other Two. He’s acted in Shrill, and currently stars in the Maya Rudolph Apple TV+ comedy Loot. But it’s his feature debut Fire Island, a queer, Asian-led...

Andy Muschietti is officially suiting up to direct a new Batman film, Variety can report exclusively. The film is one of several new DC Studios titles mapped out by leaders James Gunn and Peter Safran earlier this year.
Muschietti, behind this weekend’s superhero release “The Flash,” will direct “Batman: The Brave and the Bold.” The project is based on the comic series authored by Grant Morrison, who Gunn called “exceptionally influential” on in the DC Universe in January. The comics imagine a “Bat family,” where Bruce Wayne’s biological son Damian serves as Robin to his dad’s Batman. Muschietti’s sister and creative partner Barbara will produce the project via their label Double Dream, alongside Gunn and Safran.

When Joel Kim Booster first set out to write what would become “Fire Island,” he knew he wanted to write about the nearly decade long friendship he’s had with his co-star Bowen Yang. The two were connected by a mutual friend shortly after Booster moved to New York. “They couched it though in, ‘You know, there’s this other gay Asian comedian that you should know.’ Because that’s how it was presented to us, we were both sort of hesitant to meet because we didn’t want that person to be right,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above).
But when the two did actually meet, the pair had an instant connection that came from shared experiences coming from marginalized communities. “It was very immediately apparent to both of us that we needed each other to a certain extent and we...

The small screen cannot contain DC's "Blue Beetle." Although the original plan was for the movie to head straight to HBO Max, it will now be flying in theaters first later this year -- and Warner Bros. has finally dropped the first teaser trailer.
Directed by Angel Manuel Soto and written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, "Blue Beetle" will introduce audiences to the first Latino DC hero, a high schooler named Jaime Reyes who gains superpowers from an alien scarab beetle (as one tends to do). Susan Sarandon set to play the villain, Victoria Kord, with George Lopez and Oscar nominee Adriana Barraza playing members of Jamie's extended family. Soto spoke previously about his desire to make a film informed by authentic Mexican and Mexican-American perspectives.
Everybody wants a piece of the "Blue Beetle" action — including Zach Braff, who has said he would like to play the Ted Kord version of the...

Last year, four out of the five nominees for the Best TV Movie Emmy had their only nomination in that one category including the eventual winner, “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers.” The only nominee to get recognized in another category was “Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas,” which scored a bid for Best Choreography for a Scripted Series. Hulu’s raunchy gay rom-com “Fire Island” will be looking to see if it can get into more than one category this year and there’s a solid chance it will nab multiple Emmy nominations.
A promising sign the film could get into the Best TV Movie category was its recent nomination at the Producer’s Guild of America Awards for Best Streamed or Televised Movie. There is much overlap between the voting memberships of the PGA and the TV academy, with two of last year’s guild nominees — “Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia” and “Oslo...

“Fire Island” is about to, uh, catch fire at this year’s Emmys. The telefilm, which aired on Hulu last June, is certain to be nominated for Best TV Movie and could well win that top honor. The flick follows a group of Lgbtqia+ friends who head to Fire Island Pines for their annual trip full of sex, fun, and drugs. But when their usual trip is disrupted, they have to make this final trip their best ever. Joel Kim Booster does double duty as both writer and star of this heartfelt film, which he loosely based on “Pride & Prejudice.” Andrew Ahn directs while Margaret Cho, Matt Rogers, Conrad Ricamora, and “Saturday Night Live” star Bowen Yang all costar.
Booster play Noah, who is out just for fun and frolic until he makes a promise to best friend Howie (Yang) that he won’t have sex again until Howie breaks his dry spell.

“Fire Island,” Hulu’s LGBTQ+ ensemble dramedy from writer and star Joel Kim Booster and director Andrew Ahn, will be recognized at the 32nd annual Gotham Awards with its Ensemble Tribute.
In addition to Booster, the acclaimed Searchlight Pictures release co-stars “Saturday Night Live” Emmy nominee Bowen Yang alongside Conrad Ricamora, James Scully, Matt Rogers, Tomás Matos, Torian Miller, Nick Adams, Zane Phillips and Margaret Cho. The feature is inspired by Jane Austen’s classic text, “Pride and Prejudice,” and follows a group of friends through what may be their last summer together on the titular queer destination.
