Scott Friend hadn't directed before "To the Moon." No shorts, no commercials, or music videos. Friend had been acting for over a decade, though, and even produced a few short films. Right before the pandemic, he decided it was time to make a movie. "All my favorite filmmakers and interviews and whatnot, when they're asked, what advice would you give young filmmakers? Just go make a movie," he said. "Yeah, just go do it."
Friend's movie is already now one of those success stories of a director going out to the woods with a camera, a small crew, and a limited cast. He shot the grounded psychedelic horror film, which is about addiction and family, at his aunt's house with no expectations. Ultimately, "To the Moon" scored fans at festivals, landed a distributor, and has now hit Shudder.

“Malevolent” is the word Dennis (writer-director Scott Friend) uses to describe his estranged brother Roger (Will Brill). That’s quite the adjective without context, but one that quickly seems to fit as more details begin surfacing. There’s a medical book in their parents’ old home—which now belongs to them both equally—that Dennis’ wife Mia (Madeleine Morgenweck) finds defaced with a child’s drawings that make it seem Roger wasn’t happy to be getting a brother. Talk about where the elder sibling has been gleans the fact that part of his absence was spent in a hospital (we can only assume mental). He says it’s all in the past. That he’s a “new man” reborn. Mia didn’t know him previously, so he appears genuine now. Dennis has reservations.

To The Moon bears an intriguingly vague title. Space-travel sci-fi? Werewolves howling? Ralph Kramden’s recurring threat to Alice on The Honeymooners (my age must be showing from that reference)? Or an homage to those who boldly bare their backsides for amusement or social commentary?
Answer: none of the above.
What we get is an eerily suspenseful psychological thriller set in an isolated cabin in the woods, during a dreary winter. All movie buffs know that something wicked must that way come whenever any city folk or college kids head for such a setting. The legacy from decades of those films adds to the sense of looming menace, as we wonder exactly what is the other shoe, who’s wearing it, and when will it drop?
