Fans of Downton Abbey are cordially invited to the third motion picture from Focus Features and Carnival Films. The third entry will follow the recent installment, Downton Abbey: A New Era. The most recent outing from the popular British drama had been released back in 2022. Our own Chris Bumbray would mention in his review of A New Era, “Show mastermind Julian Fellows has written this as fan service, and it shows. There’s nothing wrong with that, but if you’re looking to finally get into Downton Abbey, this is a bad place to start as it not only assumes you’ve seen every episode, but it assumes you know them well. It’s strictly for fans, but I’m willing to bet there are still a lot of those out there.”

Just when you thought it was safe to forget which fork goes with which plate, Focus Features has announced a return to Downton Abbey. Currently titled “Downton Abbey 3” (surely a “Colon Something Something” is coming) this is the third theatrically-released feature film in the franchise that first launched on British television in 2010.
Series creator Julian Fellowes, Oscar-winning writer of Robert Altman’s “Gosford Park” (a very “Downton”-ish film), is writing the script. Simon Curtis, who directed “Downton Abbey: The New Era” in 2022, is back on board. His other work includes “My Week With Marilyn,” and “Woman in Gold.”
The film will boast Paul Giamatti, reprising the part of Harold Levinson, seen in the fourth season Christmas special from 2013. (That appearance won Giamatti an Emmy nomination for Best Drama Guest Actor.) Also new to the film franchise are Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, and Arty Froushan. With even most features struggling to get the big screen limelight they so often deserve these days, it’s harder still to get shorts played big and loud. Once again FrightFest delivers though, with another three feature-length showcases of short-form goodness, giving a platform to some of the most exciting up-and-coming genre filmmakers on the planet.
Here’s this writer’s stand-outs, from another densely packed year:
Kicking things off with Chris McInroy’s tonally perfect, and utterly disgusting workplace splatter comedy Guts; a bold and terrifically performed sketch about what it means to have guts (in every sense of the word) that milks a single joke for all it’s worth beautifully.
The same can be said for smartly devised and shot black comedy Cruise, from director Sam Rudykoff, a tight one room concept that builds wonderfully to a laugh-out-loud kicker of a punchline.

When you look at the sprawling ensemble that is "Downton Abbey," it can be easy to lose track of all of these characters, especially when you're having to alternate between the aristocratic Crawley family and their downstairs staff. But series creator/writer Julian Fellowes ("The Gilded Age") has done a great job of giving both clusters equal attention, as the show hops from one character's plotline to the next. Of course, the breadth of a television show with six seasons allows ample time to make sure no one gets lost in the shuffle.
As the PBS series made the transition to the big screen in 2019 with "Downton Abbey: The Motion Picture," and again this year with "Downton Abbey: A New Era," I wondered if Fellowes would be able to give as much attention to Maggie Smith's Dowager Countess, while also allowing characters like Rob James-Collier's Thomas Barrow enough...

It may be this year’s ‘comfort food’ film but Julian Fellowes’ second theatrical sequel to his revered long-running TV show is quality goods — and may be better than the first one. Almost every actor is back, seemingly pleased as plum puddings to repeat their roles as either landed nobility or downstairs staff. The storyline ties a final bow on some characters and plot lines, and in a far more pleasing way than we thought possible. Even casual fans of the franchise ought to be charmed.

Downton Abbey has had a long and exciting run.
We had six seasons of, holiday-themed specials, and two movies.
Hugh Bonneville, who has been with the franchise since the beginning, thinks the franchise could be over after the latest movie.
“I suspect, if there is [a new series], it would be a reboot. An origin story or something like that,” the star said to The Hollywood Reporter of rumors of a TV comeback.
The star said that Bridgerton highlighted that "there's clearly an appetite for these sorts of shows."
"Bridgerton has been a magnificent success,” he continued.
“So if you can capture the younger generation to enjoy people in frocks, then go for it.”
Bonneville went on to state that it is "immensely unlikely" the original cast would return for future projects.

The “Doctor” is still in, as Marvel’s latest film continues to lead the box office against some very proper competition.
“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” added another 8.5 million to its box office total on Friday, bumping its cumulative gross up to 318 million. Meanwhile, “Downton Abbey: A New Era” is estimated to end the weekend with 18 million.
“Downton Abbey: A New Era,” the second film spin-off of the beloved U.K. series, raked in a solid 1 million in previews on Thursday from 3,300 theaters. But its weekend estimates won’t be enough to dethrone “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” which is looking to top the domestic box office charts for a third weekend. Alex Garland’s horror film “Men” also opens this weekend, but looks to have a soft start with only 1,411,853 from 1,800 screens on Friday.
The first “Downton Abbey” film, released in 2019, grossed more than 190 million at the global box office.

“Downton Abbey: A New Era,” the follow-up to the 2019 feature film and the latest in the story of the aristocratic Crawley family established in the hit series, earned 1.05 million in its Thursday box office previews from 3,300 screens. “A New Era” opens on 3,815 screens this weekend, which is the widest opening for a Focus Features film in the specialty distributor’s history.

‘The Velvet Queen: Snow Leopard’, ‘Casablanca Beats’ land in cinemas.
Universal’s Downton Abbey: A New Era looks to revive a flagging box office this weekend, as the second-widest opening of all time in the UK and Ireland.
The film will start in 746 locations, behind only the 772 of Universal stablemate No Time To Die from September 2021, and ahead of previous record holder Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker from 2019.
Those films started with £21m and £14.4m respectively. Despite the wide opening, an eight-figure start is probably beyond A New Era; the first Downton Abbey film started with £5.2m from 732 sites...

Yet we were thrilled to spend time with so many, interviewing Tuppence Middleton, Robert-James Collier, Laura Carmichael & Allen Leech, where we discussed shooting in France, whether they have a Downton WhatsApp group, and of course on collaborating with screen icon Maggie Smith.
We then sat down with Hugh Dancy, Michelle Dockery, Raquel Cassidy & Kevin Doyle to speak about the allure of Downton, whether new members of the cast have to face any initiations – and whether fans of the franchise could be in line for a third cinematic outing…...
