Update, Saturday Am: Authorities now say 133 people are dead in the concert hall attack. Russia’s top state investigative agency said Saturday they have arrested 11 suspects, four directly involved in the onslaught.
“All four direct perpetrators of the terrorist attack, all those who shot and killed people, were found and detained,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said. “They tried to hide and moved towards Ukraine, where, according to preliminary data, a window was prepared for them from the Ukrainian side to cross the state border.”
He declared Sun., March 24, a day of mourning.
Updated with details and White House statement: The Associated Press, CNN and other outlets are reporting that Isis has claimed responsibility for the attack at a Moscow concert hall that left least 40 people are dead and 100 others wounded. Dmitry Medvedev, an ally of President Vladimir Putin and deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, claimed on Thursday that a Russian defeat in Ukraine could lead to nuclear conflict.
Medvedev, himself a former Russian president, issued the warning in a Telegram post ahead of a meeting in Germany among NATO allies who promised additional military support to Ukraine.
The former Russian president wrote: “The loss of a nuclear power in a conventional war can provoke the outbreak of a nuclear war. Nuclear powers do not lose major conflicts on which their fate depends.”
While his statements were intended to deter NATO members, they represent one of the rare instances of a senior Russian official admitting that Russia could lose in its war with Ukraine.
This comes days after Russia vowed to increase its military forces due to the “proxy war” against the West in Ukraine. Putin considers the war...

Deputy chairman of the Security Council of Russia and former president Dmitry Medvedev, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, made some odd predictions about what might happen in 2023.
Medvedev made a post on Telegram and Twitter to share his ten “futuristic hypotheses” of what might happen in the next year, including that Twitter CEO Elon Musk would become president, which Musk called “epic.”

A fortnight ago, documentary filmmaker Vera Krichevskaya was anticipating the Russia release of her latest feature, “F@ck This Job,” a spirited, behind-the-scenes portrait of the country’s last independent broadcaster, TV Rain. But just days before the film’s Moscow premiere, Russian military forces invaded Ukraine. On March 3, TV Rain bowed to political pressure and said it would suspend operations indefinitely.
Amid the turmoil, Karo, Russia’s largest cinema chain, dropped the film; a splashy, red-carpet premiere was cancelled in the wake of a bomb threat. Krichevskaya, who arrived in Russia on the eve of the screening, fled the country.
Since then, she’s been working frenetically from Tel Aviv, assisting former colleagues at a station she helped launch to safely make it out of Russia. “It is a completely new reality,” the director told Variety. “When I opened my eyes [after the invasion], I thought it was a dream.”

The hip and satirical Dozhd channel run by a former Moscow socialite somehow survives in Russia despite its coverage of opposition politics and anti-Putin protests
A strain of melancholy Slavic clarinet creeps into the soundtrack of this otherwise breathless documentary about Dozhd TV, the hip young gunslingers of Russian independent broadcasting. It’s as if it’s reminding us that this tale – hopeful foray into western-style liberalism is crushed by autocratic forces – has played out many times in Russian history before. Except that Dozhd (“rain”), founded in 2010 and still in business, hasn’t quite been crushed yet. With its live broadcasts of protests Putin would rather the public didn’t see, it shows remarkable persistence in the face of harassment and intimidation in this closely embedded account by one of its former producers, Vera Krichevskaya.

If there’s one thing a worldwide pandemic has taught us, it’s that even in an increasingly globalized world, different countries have different approaches on how to handle a crisis, which ultimately lead to different outcomes. Pre-Covid, Russia was one territory that was seeing a boom in its distribution and production landscape and, although it took a controversial and somewhat softer approach to lockdown compared to other territories, the country’s screen sectors haven’t been knocked off of their stride.
The territory is not only reaping the benefits of a thriving entertainment sector on a local scale, but thanks to online streamers levelling the global field of content, Russian stories are also resonating with international audiences more than ever.

Amid signs of a new, Glasnost-like desire to engage with the international industry, Russia has launched a 40% cash rebate for foreign film productions.

For one day, at least, the world managed to put aside its differences and celebrate a game beloved across the planet, honoring the two teams that made it to the final championship with thanks and gratitude.
The 2018 World Cup final brought moments of drama, political protests, celebration, controversy on at least one call, and ultimately, a celebration of human spirit and national unity that is rarely achieved outside of sports.
Crowds packed the lawns beneath the Eiffel Tower, and on the other side of the Seine River, more fans poured onto streets around the Champs-Elysees and the Arc de Triomphe. Car horn honking was the way many celebrated in the seconds after France beat Croatia 4-2 in Moscow.
Here are some reactions. Deadline will update as more appear:

Moscow -- The Russian Orthodox Church on Sunday asked for clemency for three jailed members of the rock band Pussy Riot if they repent for their "punk prayer" for deliverance from President Vladimir Putin at Moscow's main cathedral, a statement that came a day before an appeal hearing and appeared to reflect a desire to put an end to the case that has caused an international outrage.
But it was unclear whether the women, who were sentenced to two years last month, would offer a penitence sought by the church and how much leniency a court may show. Putin has always been reluctant to avoid leaving an impression that he could bow to public pressure and has taken an increasingly tough line on dissent since his inauguration in May.

October 1 marks the second day of global action for jailed Russian punk rockers Pussy Riot. It's also the day a judge will rule on the appeal made by three of its members sentenced in August to two years in a labor camp for performing a "punk prayer" in Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral.
Pyotr Verzilov, Russian activist and husband of jailed Pussy Riot member Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, has become the de facto spokesperson for the group, denouncing President Vladimir Putin's harsh punishment.
Last week in New York, Yoko Ono awarded the LennonOno Peace Grant to Verzilov and his four-year-old daughter, Gera, on behalf of Pussy Riot.
Huffington Post Canada spoke with Verzilov about meeting Yoko, how he'll support his daughter if she turns to "hooliganism," why it's his responsibility to change Russia, and how the Pussy Riot appeal is futile.

If you don’t want your off-the-cuff words to go viral, don’t chat near the mics. President Obama is learning that lesson the hard away after he was overheard telling outgoing Russian president Dmitri Medvedev he’ll have more flexibility on security issues after he wins reelection this November. Whoops.
But the president isn’t the first person to be caught off-guard in a microphone blooper. Behold, five other candid moments that could’ve been prevented with one measly reminder: Hey you, there’s a mic right there.

A remark caught made by President Obama on an open microphone has sparked a kerfuffle along party lines.
On Monday (March 26), the President was overheard at the Nuclear Security Summit telling Russian President Dmitri Medvedev that he can tell incoming Russian President Vladimir Putin that it's important to give him (President Obama) space on missile defense and that after this election, he'll have more flexibility.
Republicans were swift to respond, primarily through a new ad that says, "What Obama tells world leaders when he thinks you aren't listening" and asks, "What else is on Obama's agenda after the election that he isn't telling you?"
Presidential candidate Mitt Romney then said at a campaign stop in San Diego, "This is no time for our president to be pulling his punches with the American people. And not telling us what he's intending to do with regards to our missile defense system, with...

He also has a movie coming out next week called It's Kind of a Funny Story, in which he's in a psych ward (which is ironic since he's the sanest member of his TV family). NOMExposed has launched today to help show the money trail and the power players in the anti-equality movement. Unfortunately, the site has suffered time issues all day, so I can't give much of a review yet. Hackers have published what's being called a definitive list of terms that Google Instant censors. There are a lot of Glbt specific terms on the list, and some activists are upset. but as someone who has to search the Internet with SafeSearch off, I know that innocent terms can produce profane results.
