Written in 1974, prolific young-adult novelist Lois Duncan’s “Down a Dark Hall” intriguingly anticipated some of the tropes of latterday Ya fantasy-fiction blockbusters. Thus “Buried” director Rodrigo Cortés’ belated screen adaptation comes off — at least in narrative terms — as something a halfway point between “Harry Potter” and “Suspiria,” as “gifted” girls at a curious, sinister private school become increasingly susceptible to supernatural forces.
Lionsgate Premiere’s Stateside launch of this Spanish-u.S. coproduction (which has already opened in several other territories) doesn’t suggest great faith, as it’s only providing very limited theatrical exposure alongside a VOD release. Still, this is a decent modern Gothic thriller handled with sufficient style and a straight face by genre ace Cortés. His efforts, and strong performances by the young female leads, make for a movie that’s fairly strong meat by juvenile fantasy standards, if probably a tad wimpy for horror-fan tastes.

After a six-year hiatus from feature length filmmaking, Spanish director Rodrigo Cortés is finally back with his latest fantasy horror picture Down a Dark Hall – also known by its alternate title Blackwood. Best known for his tense direction on the Ryan Reynolds-led Buried and the Sigourney Weaver-led Red Lights, Cortés is no stranger to the horror-thriller genre. In Dark Hall, Cortés throws a fantastical twist onto things as the film deals with the supernatural – spookily depicted in the first trailer for the film, which Lionsgate has now released.
Down a Dark Hall centers on a troublesome young adult named Kit Gordy who, after a brief altercation with the law, is sent to a mysterious disciplinary boarding school – “Welcome to Blackwood” the stern headmaster Madame Duret (played by Uma Thurman) announces in the trailer. The story centers around Blackwood Boarding School, where lost girls find their way. Here's the synopsis:

"I'm worried about you..." IFC Films has unveiled an official trailer for director brothers Brendan & Emmett Malloy's new film The Tribes of Palos Verdes, a surf drama about "young Medina" who "attempts to surf her way to happiness." If that logline doesn't make your eyes roll, some of the "life is tough" footage in this trailer definitely will. Though it actually doesn't look as bad as it sounds. The Tribes of Palos Verdes stars Maika Monroe as Medina, a young surfer woman from Palos Verdes, as well as Jennifer Garner as her mom, plus Cody Fern, Alicia Silverstone, Noah Silver, Elisabeth Rohm, Goran Visnjic, Justin Kirk and Joely Fisher. This looks like it's packed full of drama galore. It is "set amidst the sun-kissed beaches and crystal blue waters of the California coast" which may be enough to get a few folks into theaters. Three episodes were provided for reviewing purposes prior to broadcast.
If there was anything you could say about Tyrant‘s freshman season, it’s that as a show on a basic cable network, is was pretty unique. Set in the fictional foreign country of Abbudin, the show followed Bassam “Barry” Al-Fayeed (Adam Rayner) and his quest back home after twenty years absent – in which he turned into a crunchy granola suburban dad with a wife and two kids – and his subsequent attempts to keep his hotheaded brother Jamal (Ashraf Barhom) from descending Abbudin into chaos.
It was topical and interesting and a slight slow-burn, all the ingredients for good grown-up entertainment, but iffy writing and poor pacing made it ring constantly hollow. Its best, most interesting storylines either going nowhere – Barry’s son Sammy (Noah Silver) and his fling with family bodyguard Abdul – or dragging out far too long for even a 10-episode season.

FX has found some great success with their scripted dramas, especially ones like Sons of Anarchy and American Horror Story. Will Tyrant also be a ratings hit? Will it be renewed for a second season or will it be cancelled instead? We'll have to wait and see.
Tyrant revolves around the youngest son of a dictator who returns to his war-torn country in the Middle-East with his American family. The drama's cast includes Adam Rayner, Ashraf Barhom, Moran Atias, Jennifer Finnigan, Anne Winters, Noah Silver, Mehdi Dehbi, Fares Fares, Alice Krige, Salim Daw, and Justin Kirk.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.

Supernatural teen angst and romance are in the chilly air of fashion photographer-turned-filmmaker Carter Smith’s (The Ruins) brooding and mostly naturalistic psychodrama, ripped from the pages of Christopher Barzak’s young-adult novel One for Sorrow. The naked corpse of Jamie Marks (Noah Silver, looking like Harry Potter’s sinister doppelgänger) is found under a creek bridge in upstate New York, stumbled upon by rock-collecting loner Gracie (Homeland’s Morgan Saylor). Also profoundly affected: Adam (Shameless’s Cameron Monaghan), a stoic ginger and cross-country track star who witnessed his teammates bullying Jamie but never stepped up to befriend or defend him. Brought together by their mutual empathy and...

If paranormal horror movies have taught me anything, it’s that the dead never actually stay buried. Whether they become roaming zombies, lost souls or scorned ghosties, some “people” will do anything to avoid their eternal afterlife – and that’s the story of Jamie Marks Is Dead.
The Ruins helmer Carter Smith returns to direct his own personal story of life and death, the unfortunately premature ending of a young boy’s life, but Jamie’s story also plays directly into our own fears of wandering helplessly into a dark unknown. Man’s most common paranoia dreads whatever comes next, after our mortal souls have passed into some spiritual realm (let’s not even debate religion here), and young Jamie Marks helps confirm that even in death we’ll have those same, anxious fears – except we’re one step closer to uncovering life’s greatest mystery.

At the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, we sat down with director Carter Smith to discuss his new film, Jamie Marks is Dead, which played in competition. Known for his well received 2006 short film Bugcrush and his 2008 feature debut, The Ruins, the director touches upon how he wanted to make a film that transcends simple definition by not adhering specifically to any particular rules of genre or theme. A coming of age story about loneliness and identity, it’s a story about friendships that shape convictions and values. Part ghost story, part coming out drama, part teenage angst, Smith also discusses how Jamie Marks isn’t a simple film to classify or justify as intended for one audience in particular. We also touch on casting (worth noting is the impressive group of young players in Cameron Monaghan, Noah Silver, Morgan Saylor, Madisen Beaty), inspirations, and the difficulties of getting projects made, and...

I've been looking forward to Jamie Marks is Dead for a while now, and only because Carter Smith's 2008 survival horror flick The Ruins is all kinds of excellent. Thankfully, we don't have to wait much longer, as Gravitas Ventures will debut this on on VOD and in limited threatens on August 29th. For now, we've got a clip.
It's not much, but it'll have to do.

Synopsis
Adam McCormick had just turned fifteen when the body was found in the woods. It is the beginning of an autumn that will change his life forever.
Jamie Marks was a boy a lot like Adam, a boy no one paid much attention to—a boy almost no one would truly miss. And for the first time, Adam feels he has a purpose. Now, more than ever,...

If horror has taught us anything, it’s that you should proceed with caution when interacting with the spirits of the dead. However, that doesn’t seem to be of Cameron Monaghan‘s concern, as evident by the first trailer for Carter Smith‘s “Jamie Marks Is Dead.” Based on the novel “One for Sorrow” by Christopher Barzak, the film centers on the events that follow after the corpse of Jamie Marks (played by round spectacle-wearing Noah Silver, who may I say looks distractingly like “Order of the Phoenix” era Daniel Radcliffe), a high school student who was often bullied if not ignored, is [...]

The horror feature Jamie Marks is Dead had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Now, the film is slated to release through video-on-demand and in a few UK theatres in late August. This moody film stars Cameron Monaghan ("Shameless"), Noah Silver, Liv Tyler and Judy Greer. The film's first trailer is below. The clip shows Jamie Marks (Silver) haunting a moor. Adam (Monaghan) and his girlfriend, Gracie, investigate Mark's apparition and this spectre has a story to tell. Now, Marks will not rest until revenge is taken against those who have wronged him. The trailer is very atmospheric. The ghost appears in the night and in gloom. This spectre looks almost colourless as he moves about. Fans of horror, or ghost stories are encouraged to take a look at the spook below. Release Date: August 29th, 2014 (Limited Theatrical). Director: Carter Smith. Writers: Christopher Barzak and Carter Smith.

"Who did it?" Today's indie trailer is for the murder mystery thriller Jamie Marks Is Dead, from writer / director Carter Smith, which first premiered at Sundance 2014 earlier this year. The film stars Cameron Monaghan as a high school student who meets the ghost of a murdered teenager and attempts to help him put together the crime. There are some odd appearances by Liv Tyler and Judy Greer in funky supporting roles, along with Noah Silver as Jamie Marks. While this starts out like a new take on a murder concept like Rian Johnson's Brick, it spins into the ghost territory and seems to turn into too much of a paranormal horror for my own tastes. I'm curious about it, but not sure if it'll be any good. Give this a look for yourself. Watch the official Us theatrical trailer for Carter Smith's Jamie Marks Is Dead, in high...

Barry hasn’t been home, however, in 20 years—and his dad is the controversial dictator of this (fictional) country. And his brother is the troubled heir to the throne. And Barry may find himself wrapped up in the politics of this First Family in ways he was hoping to avoid.

Tyrant, premiering Tuesday night on FX, brings the Godfather plot to the Middle East. The Arab drama centers on Bassam Al-Fayeed (Adam Rayner), a Pasadena-based pediatrician who escaped his past and lives with his America wife (Jennifer Finnigan) and children (Anne Winters and Noah Silver) as Barry. That past, the pilot episode reveals, entails a Middle East upbringing in which he’s the youngest son of Khaled Al-Fayeed (Nasser Faris), the dictator of fictional nation Abbudin. When Barry returns, accompanied by his family, for the first time in 20 years, he’s thrown back into the familial and national politics of his youth. Off-screen, Tyant has its own tumultuous back-story (thoroughly documented by Lacey Rose in

Tyrant Review
The problem with Tyrant, FX’s new drama about an Americanized doctor who is the son of a Middle Eastern dictator, is that the sum is far less than the seemingly random parts which never gel into an engaging version of what should be a great show.
Barry Al Fayeed (Adam Rayner) finally decides to return to the homeland he left when he was 16, because his nephew is getting married. It’s a life he hoped to cut all ties to, and we see why through flashbacks to some of his earliest days. His older brother Jamal (Ashraf Barhom) was clearly chosen to take over, and Barry was largely ignored. Such is the way of second sons. Jamal has grown into just the sort of psychopath every dictator hopes for, but he isn’t quite as bright as his younger brother.
Despite the atrocities his father visited upon him in his youth,...

The story behind the making of FX's new drama "Tyrant" is ultimately much more interesting than "Tyrant" itself. A lot of people came and went from this project, a lot of people fought for its future, and a lot of obvious stumbling blocks were ignored because there was a real passion to get it made. But the finished product doesn't suggest something nearly worth all the fussing and fighting. The story on the show (which debuts tomorrow night at 10): Bassam "Barry" Al-Fayeed (Adam Rayner) is the son of the dictator of a fictional Middle Eastern nation, has been living in self-imposed exile in America since his teenage years, and now works as a pediatrician in southern California, with an American wife Molly (Jennifer Finnigan) and teenage kids Emma (Anne Winters) and Sammy (Noah Silver). Reluctantly, he takes them to his homeland to attend his nephew's wedding, and dramatic events...

The summer is no longer a time when television slows down and networks air reruns on an endless, mind numbing loop. FX is taking full advantage of what used to be a lull in original programming and offering viewers a new drama, Tyrant, alongside season two of The Bridge.
The network has just released the first trailer for the series and if you’re looking for something to add to your DVR que, this looks like a solid bet. Tyrant comes from Homeland producers Howard Gordon and Gideon Raff, and centers around a seemingly average American family that heads to the Middle East to visit their politically-inclined family for the wedding of a relative.
Tyrant clearly sets itself up to offer some social commentary on a subject that is still very much taboo in a certain sense. The American version of the Middle East doesn’t account for personal tales,...
