At the second annual Screen Actors Guild Awards in 1996, 32-year-old Nicolas Cage (“Leaving Las Vegas”) supplanted inaugural Best Film Actor recipient Tom Hanks and became the category’s youngest winner. Although his standing has been threatened in recent years by Taron Egerton (“Rocketman”), Timothée Chalamet (“Call Me By Your Name”), and Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out”), the record remains intact nearly three decades later. This year, however, he could finally be knocked down a spot on the list if Austin Butler (31) succeeds on his freshman solo bid for “Elvis.”
Butler is part of only the seventh Best Actor lineup in SAG Awards history to exclusively consist of newcomers to the category. He does have one Best Film Ensemble nomination under his belt, as do two of his competitors: Brendan Fraser and Bill Nighy. Fraser, who triumphed alongside his “Crash” cast mates, is currently nominated for “The Whale,” while Nighy’s first...

It turns out that a “friendly neighborhood Spider-man,” Andrew Garfield, is particularly neighborly when it comes to board games. The actor, best known for playing comic book hero Spider-Man, recently gave an interview detailing his 10 essential items, including two popular board games.
Garfield then told a funny story about surprising a stranger with an impromptu game.

Bursting onto the scene in 2010, Garfield played Tommy in Never Let Me Go and Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network. That same year, he was also cast as everyone’s favorite web-slinger in The Amazing Spider-Man, which premiered in 2012. Garfield followed up with the sequel in 2014.
Since then, Garfield has largely avoided movies that cast him as super humans. (One notable exception is Garfield’s reprisal of his Spider–Man role in Spider-Man: No Way Home), opting, instead, for more grounded roles...

Exclusive: After bringing the story of World War II conscientious objector Desmond T. Doss to the big screen with Hacksaw Ridge, the Oscar-nominated producer of that film, David Permut, is in development on another feature project about a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient — that of Civil War Union Army surgeon Dr. Mary Edwards Walker. Permut is teaming with Walden Media on the feature, which is being adapted by Rosalind Ross.
The project follows Walker’s journey during the Civil War as she struggled to be accepted and compensated in the same manner as her male counterparts in the medical field and ultimately became the first and only female recipient to receive the Congressional Medal Of Honor. Even after receiving her medical degree at Syracuse Medical College, Walker was considered unfit for the Union Army Examining Board and initially was only allowed to serve voluntarily as a surgeon.

Mel Gibson on the set of ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ (Courtesy: Lionsgate)

Mel Gibson has a chance at being nominated in the best director category at the 2017 Oscars for Hacksaw Ridge — but there is definitely some competition. While the 61-year-old multihyphenate has already received nominations at the Critics’ Choice Awards and the Golden Globes, snagging one from the Academy is not certain. How often have directors been gotten those two precursor nominations only to fall short of the all-important Oscar nomination?
Over the course of his lengthy career, Gibson has primarily been an actor. That being said, the New York native has stepped behind the camera and directed five feature films to date: 1993’s The Man Without a Face, 1995’s Braveheart, 2004’s The Passion of the Christ, 2006’s Apocalypto, and 2016’s Hacksaw Ridge — with the announcement of another, Berserker, on the horizon. Andrew Garfield, “Hacksaw Ridge” (Summit Entertainment)Sit through director Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge” and it’s clear no other actor could play World War II hero Desmond T. Doss as astutely as Garfield. The “Social Network” and “Amazing Spider-Man” star turns in the best performance of his career—and it’s one of 2016’s standouts. Doss was the first-ever conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor after saving dozens of his comrades on the titular battlefield. All the while, he refused to bear arms as a medic, citing his strict religious beliefs. While times of war bring out the worst, most primal behavior in men, Doss is a hero who stands by his convictions, keeps his faith, and doggedly sees good in the world, even in the face of violence and death. There’s hardly a moment in all of “Hacksaw Ridge” when Garfield, who fully embodies Doss’ unerring devotion and loveable aloofness,...

“Hacksaw Ridge” is not your ordinary war movie. The return of Mel Gibson behind the camera sees the filmmaker telling the incredible true story of Desmond T. Doss, a conscientious objector who nonetheless earned the Congressional Medal Of Honor by saving the lives of 75 men in the battlefield, without carrying a weapon. And it’s working that mix of intriguing narrative elements that Rupert Gregson-Williams delivered his score for the movie.

“This story of heroism is just utterly undeniable,” says Academy Award–winning director and actor Mel Gibson. He’s speaking of the astonishing true story of World War II army medic Desmond T. Doss, who refused to bear arms and kill the enemy during his time on the battlefield at Okinawa, Japan, all while saving 75 of his injured comrades. He is in history books today as the first conscientious objector presented with the Medal of Honor. On Nov. 4, Doss gets his long-overdue Hollywood treatment with “Hacksaw Ridge,” star Andrew Garfield’s ticket to major awards consideration and Gibson’s first directorial effort since 2006’s “Apocalypto.” “Generally speaking, I generate my own stuff, and this was not that—this came to me from [producers] Bill Mechanic and David Permut.... A very good script. It ticked all my boxes,” Gibson says. “It went through to my heart and then to my head. I...

This week sees the release of “Hacksaw Ridge,” a World War II movie starring Andrew Garfield as Desmond T. Doss, a deeply religious conscientious objector who saved the lives of as many as 75 of his colleagues at the Battle of Okinawa without ever holding a weapon, and was awarded the Medal of Honor. On the whole, it’s been very well-reviewed (though our review had more than a few issues with it), and could well figure into the awards season.

There are entire corporations built on the depiction of superheroes in film – larger than life characters fighting for truth and justice, and defeating the villains. Depictions of more realistic versions of these types of stories are less frequent – but even more powerful. Their impact is based firmly in the knowledge that these characters we are watching on screen are (or were) real people, with hopes, dreams, and families of their own.
They are relatable individuals often caught up in circumstances that require them to rise to a challenge, and tackle a serious problem head-on. It may be dangerous, it may be difficult, but it is always life-changing – for themselves, and for others. The fall season is traditionally the time of true heroes in film – not least because it is also awards season, and Oscar loves a good biopic. "While everybody is taking life, I'm going to be saving it." Lionsgate has debuted the first trailer for the latest film directed by Mel Gibson, a World War II drama called Hacksaw Ridge, about pacifist medic Desmond T. Doss played by Andrew Garfield. I'm a sucker for WWII films, and this is a helluva story. The ensemble cast includes Hugo Weaving, Vince Vaughn, Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Rachel Griffiths, Teresa Palmer, Matt Nable & others. If there’s one thing Oscar loves, it’s a gritty and inspiring WWII drama. For your consideration in the 2016 awards season: “Hacksaw Ridge,” a big-screen retelling of the Battle of Okinawa and the heroism of U.S. Army medic Desmond T. Doss. Directed by Mel Gibson and written by Andrew Knight and Robert Schenkkan, from a story by Gregory Crosby, “Hacksaw Ridge” stars Andrew Garfield as Doss, a Seventh-day Adventist who enlisted to fight in the islands off Japan—and refused to carry a weapon because of his religious beliefs. We’ve seen a lot of war movies, but none quite like this.
The first trailer for Mel Gibson’s latest film Hacksaw Ridge was just released, and it tells the true story of American Army medic Desmond T. Doss, who served in World War II without carrying a gun or firing a single bullet. Violence went against his belief system, so he instead focused on saving men on the front lines that otherwise would not have made it.
Andrew Garfield plays Doss in this adaptation, and Teresa Palmer, Sam Worthington, Vince Vaughn, and Hugo Weaving also star. As the first conscientious objector to earn the Medal of Honor, Doss’s story is one that deserves to be told, and we can’t...

While Mel Gibson slowly tries to rebuild his acting career, he is also stepping behind the camera again to continue his directorial efforts before he takes on the sequel to The Passion of the Christ. The first trailer has been released for his World War II biographical drama, Hacksaw Ridge, which will premiere at Venice and centers around the real life army medic Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield) who became the first Conscientious Objector to win a Medal of Honor after he refused to kill enemy troops during the Battle of Okinawa.
Garfield looks rough and war-worn, yet with a ray of hope glinting in his eyes as he traverses the battlefield and goes behind enemy lines to save fellow soldiers. Say what you will about Gibson, but he’s proven he can stage a hard-hitting battle sequence while retaining an emotional connection amongst the bloodshed with efforts like Apocalytpo and Braveheart,...

The cameras, they are a-rolling on Mel Gibson’s WWII drama Hacksaw Ridge, and after showcasing our first look at the picture on its Australian set, it’s been revealed that The Matrix and The Lord of the Rings star Hugo Weaving has boarded the project.
Variety has the scoop, noting that Weaving will portray the father of Andrew Garfield’s pacifistic Desmond T. Doss, a Us army medic who point blank refused to pick up a weapon during the throes of World War II. Largely focused on the battle of Okinawa during the tail-end of the conflict – April 1945, to be specific – Gibson’s latest feature charts the incredible bravery shown by Garfield’s Desmond, who was even awarded the decorated Medal of Honor despite his refusal to engage in combat.

Coming off the flop of "Unfinished Business" and the divisive second season of "True Detective," Vince Vaughn has joined the cast of Mel Gibson's next directorial effort "Hacksaw Ridge".
The film is based on the true story of Desmond T. Doss, a Us Army WW2 medic who served in the battle of Okinawa and refused to kill. Despite his objections, his incredible valour saving lives during the battle saw him awarded the Medal of Honor.

Lionsgate is nearing a deal for North American rights to Gibson's "Hacksaw Ridge," a hot ticket in Berlin where Im Global launched the project to foreign buyers, and where CAA fielded Us attention. THR reports that per an estimated $10-$12 million pact, Cross Creek Pictures and Demarest Films will co-finance the $45 million WWII drama based on the true story of soldier turned conscientious objector Desmond T. Doss, to be played by Andrew Garfield. Cross Creek and Demarest will release the film nationally with Lionsgate. Over 13 years in the making, "Hacksaw" sold presale rights on the European Film Market to territories including Germany, Spain, Korea and Latin America. Drafted in 1942, Doss refused to bear arms and eventually became a medic. He won the Medal of Honor in 1945 for aiding 75 men during the Battle of Okinawa, yanking wounded men from enemy lines and sustaining critical injuries while unarmed. The film was originally at Disney with Randall Wallace,...

Gibson is on board to helm "Hacksaw Ridge," based on the true story of a war hero named Desmond T. Doss, who would be played by Garfield if the deal gets sealed, reports THR. Drafted in 1942, Doss refused to bear arms and eventually became a medic — and a pariah among other soldiers for his beliefs as a conscientious objector. He won the Medal of Honor in 1945 for aiding 75 men during the Battle of Okinawa, yanking wounded men from enemy lines and sustaining critical injuries while unarmed. 13 years in the works, the film was originally slated at Disney, with "We Were Soldiers," an earnest 2002 Vietnam War pic starring Gibson, director Randall Wallace on board.
