Almost every television series gets in on the holiday spirit and sometimes that Christmas celebration arrives in the form of horror. Luckily, there’s no shortage of stellar horror TV episodes that deliver killer Santas, folkloric monsters of Yule, holiday ghosts, and more.
The 12 Days of Creepmas continues on Bloody Disgusting, this time with 11 holiday horror episodes of television that aren’t afraid to deck the halls with blood.
Keep track of the 12 Days of Creepmas here.

Yellow Veil Pictures, the U.S.-based arthouse genre distribution company, has acquired North American rights to Belgian director Claude Schmitz’s deadpan detective thriller “The Other Laurens.”
The feature debut world premiered at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight and will have its North American Premiere at Fantastic Fest which kicks off Sept. 23 in Austin, Texas. Yellow Veil Pictures plans for a theatrical release in 2024.
“The Other Laurens” follows a private detective, Gabriel, who has been asked by his niece to investigate her father’s death. Gabriel must confront the ghosts of his past and finds himself caught up in a strange investigation mixing fantasy and drug trafficking.
“‘The Other Laurens’ stands beside films like ‘The Big Lebowski’ and ‘The Long Goodbye’ in melding a level of absurdism into Neo-noir, revealing something darker beneath the surface,” said Joe Yannick at Yellow Veil Pictures.

If she could do “Project Greenlight” again, executive producer Issa Rae told IndieWire, she wouldn’t do a genre film.
On the same day that Max dropped the 10-episode reality series about a first-time filmmaker’s journey to the screen, the streamer also dropped “Gray Matter,” the sci-fi thriller that director Meko Winbush shot in 18 days while “Greenlight” documented the process. At a tight 86 minutes, the film is visually compelling and makes sound use of its lead actors — a solid debut for Winbush and ultimate victory for “Greenlight.”
“Gray Matter” is primarily the story of mother Ayla (Jessica Frances Dukes) and daughter Aurora (Mia Isaac), two superpowered beings living in isolation while Ayla hounds her daughter to control and conceal what she can do. Her fears are substantiated but concealed from Aurora, prompting the lonely teen to sneak out of the house to disastrous effect. Aurora wakes up in the...

For aspiring filmmakers, appreciators of how the sausage is made and lovers of atypically blunt reality messiness, “Project Greenlight: A New Generation” is essential viewing. From the Max reboot’s welcome focus on inclusive expansion, its gutsy willingness to show its subjects’ warts in extreme close-up and ultimate promise for a better tomorrow, this is easily the best season of the reality show, which first aired in 2001, and will easily be the best reality show of the year.
Gone are original producers and sometimes on-camera superstars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. In their place are new producers and mentors Kumail Nanjiani, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Issa Rae (who even makes a joke about Damon and Affleck “rolling in their graves”). Their goal is simple on paper, and borderline Sisyphean in execution: Give a first-time feature filmmaker a low-budget genre film to make, and document the entire process from pre-production to premiere.

The Spine of Night, now streaming on Shudder, is a forward-looking retro fantasy. Shot with the rotoscope animation technique most associated with Ralph Bakshi’s The Lord of the Rings and Gerald Potterton’s Heavy Metal, it captures a world in ecological danger because of the greed of powerful men. Lucy Lawless plays the shamaness Tzod, whose magical powers are rooted in the blue flowers which grow in her enchanted swamp, Bastal.
Also starring Richard E. Grant, Patton Oswalt, Betty Gabriel, and Joe Manganiello, The Spine of Night is an adult cartoon with responsible themes. Barbarians and librarians vie for power while necromancers try to restore balance to a bent and broken world. Time flies by with nods to Ridley Scott’s Legend and John Boorman’s Excalibur, if fed through the meat grinder of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead.

Where are all the adult animated movies? There’s even less when it comes to animated horror movies. This watchable American animation draws on Japanese anime, but it’s best to ignore the muddled plot and let the striking imagery wash over you
This animated feature is written and directed by Philip Gelatt, who previously made live-action horror pics They Remain and The Bleeding House, and Morgan Galen King; it is an American-made production but one indebted to the style and scope of classic Japanese anime, what with its fusion of 18-certificate worthy violence, steampunk fantasy elements and new age spiritualism. That all makes for a heady, fizzy mix that’s very watchable, probably even more so for viewers open to the use of chemical assistance. Still, there are passages where the narrative throughline gets rather muddled and you can only wonder where those characters with mechanical wings and plague doctor masks suddenly came from (or did you just fall asleep for a minute and imagine them?) It...

The Spine of Night Directors on Horror Fiction Inspirations and the Freedom of Independent Animation
Philip Gelatt and Morgan Galen King’s The Spine of Night is an impassioned tribute to adult animation, dark fantasy, and truly ambitious genre epics of the type all too rarely seen on the silver screen.
“One thing is certain about The Spine of Night: this is a labor of bone-shattered, triptacular love, “I said in my review. “The new rotoscope-animated feature—a clearly adoring homage to Ralph Bakshi, Heavy Metal, and 1980s dark fantasy—was created over a span of seven years by a minuscule team of animators digitally painting frame-by-frame with the oversight of directors Philip Gelatt and Morgan Galen King. It’s a deathly earnest film––like George Lucas-caliber earnest––guts-filled with capital-l lore, grim violence, artful nudity, and portentous monologues––not-always-convincingly delivered by a vocal cast that includes Lucy Lawless and Patton Oswalt––that never dare consciously wink at the intrinsic camp of its culty-retro throwback venue.

, Morgan Galen King and Philip Gelatt’s “The Spine of Night” is nothing less than an orgiastic ode to Ralph Bakshi, Gerald Potterton, and the other god-kings of rotoscope animation whose adult cartoons glistened from behind the beaded doorways of America’s video stores like forbidden relics that would melt the faces of anyone who dared to gaze upon their taboo wonders. It’s nothing more than that, either, but there’s only so much you can ask of a movie in which Lucy Lawless voices a naked swamp witch who wears a human skull as a headdress and shouts things like “tremble before the immensity of the night!”
Even if “The Spine of Night” struggles to align its overarching story with the anthology-like shape that it takes, it’s still rare and rewarding to watch a film that makes so few bones about what it wants to be — all...

When it comes to painting outside the box, so to speak, this year has been a promising one for animation. While the Pixars and Dreamworks of the world often get the biggest budgets both on the production and marketing side, we are thankful to get such delightfully inventive works like Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s Flee, Dash Shaw’s Cryptozoo, Hideaki Anno’s Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, and Mamoru Hosoda’s Belle. Premiering at SXSW earlier this year, Philip Gelatt and Morgan Galen King’s The Spine of the Night deserves to be part of the conversation.

Knoxville Horror Film Fest 2021: "The Knoxville Horror Film Fest will present its lucky 13th annual weekend of cinematic scares Thursday, October 21 through Sunday, October 24, with events split between Maryville, Tennessee’s Parkway Drive-In and the festival’s home base at Central Cinema in Knoxville.
It was Covid-era necessity that drove last year’s premier programming to the Parkway, but it’s pure pleasure that brings it back for a second year. Thursday night’s lineup will kick off the festival with a triple feature of John Carpenter’s ghostly 1980 classic The Fog, Rialto Pictures’ new 40th anniversary 4K restoration of Joe Dante’s The Howling (1981), and heavy metal horror cult item Trick Or Treat (1986). Friday night will continue the fun with the trailers of the 2021 Khff Grindhouse Grind-out, followed by another triple feature of Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984), An American Werewolf In London (1981) and SFX genius Phil Tippett’s years-in-the-making Mad God.

Exclusive: Rlje Films and corporate sibling Shudder have acquired North American rights to The Spine of Night, the animated fantasy horror film that just premiered at this year’s SXSW. The film, done in hand-rotoscoped animation, will now hit theaters in late 2021 and in 2022 on Shudder which also has UK, Australia and New Zealand rights.
Written and directed by Philip Gelatt and Morgan Galen King, the film features the voices of Richard E. Grant, Lucy Lawless, Patton Oswalt, Betty Gabriel and Joe Manganiello. A tip of the cap to the works of artists like Ralph Bakshi and Frank Franzetta, the ultra-violent fantasy centers on an ancient dark magic that falls into sinister hands and unleashes ages of suffering onto mankind. A bright, watery cornflower blue may lead the palette of “The Spine of Night,” an adult animated fantasy indebted in equal part to Ralph Bakshi and Gerald Potterton, but that doesn’t mean a lot of crimson blood isn’t spilled for contrast. Extreme, skeleton-snapping ultraviolence is a key selling point of this first collaboration between animator Morgan Galen King and filmmaker-comics writer Philip Gelatt. To watch it is to feel the wide-eyed thrill of many a Generation X teen for whom hard fantasy — particularly in cartoon form — was a gateway into more illicit spectacles. With its fusion of naive, old-school character rotoscoping and lavishly airbrushed world-building, the film’s visuals aim squarely for geek nostalgia and hit their target.
Narratively it’s a murkier, less engaging affair: a convoluted saga of dark magic and darker human impulse that passes through multiple eras and heroes, without amassing much in the way of feeling.

Holy gore hell. It's only March, and we already have at least two incredibly unique, extremely strange mind-fuck animated films that are definitely not for kids. Dash Shaw's Cryptozoo premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival in January, and The Spine of Night just premiered at the SXSW Film Festival this month. (And let's not forget about that wacky puppet horror Frank & Zed from the Nightstream Film Festival last year.) These films are yet another reminder that animation is a medium, not just a genre, and can be used to tell any kind of story - including extremely violent, gory, not-for-kids stories that could only be realized with animation. Fresh from SXSW, The Spine of Night is an instant cult classic, find-it-on-vhs-anywhere-you-can-at-whichever-video-store-stocks-it, extra gnarly, mind-melting sensation. Just don't watch this sober. Co-written & co-directed by Philip Gelatt & Morgan Galen King, The Spine of Night is an epic fantasy film ...

Last week, the filmmaking duo of Philip Gelat and Morgan Galen King celebrated the world premiere at SXSW 2021 of their epic animated feature The Spine of Night, which immerses viewers in a brutal world filled with magic, monsters, and men who are hellbent on abusing the powers of nature for their own personal gain. Evoking the classic animated works of Heavy Metal and Ralph Bakshi’s The Lord of the Rings, The Spine of Night feels exactly like the type of film you’d watch late at night with a group of friends after playing D&d and you just needed one more hit of fantasy world-building to cap off the whole evening.

The simplest description of “The Spine of Night” is “a 1980s heavy metal album cover come to graphic life.” Barbarian shamans, petty despots, noble knight sages, craven knaves, megalomaniacal necromancers, blood, guts, and a parade of naked flesh are all given a spark of spontaneity by hand-rotoscoped animation to emphasize jaw-dropping over the top violence instead of blunting it. Writer-directors Philip Gelatt and Morgan Galen King spare little and go the distance on churning the stomach; they’re as far from the uncanny valley as possible, but going the opposite direction has a way of making gory displays more disturbing, not less, a’la “Superjail!

We live in a heyday of adult animation on television, but when it comes to feature length films, it's been a bit more sparse over the last couple of decades. Apart from brutally raunchy fare like the South Park film and Sausage Fest, serious adult animation has been largely in hibernation since the days of Bakshi, which is where Philip Gelatt and Morgan Galen King's The Spine of Night picks up the long dropped baton and runs with it. Heavily influenced by fantasy films of the late '70s and early '80s, The Spine of Night gives geeks everywhere a gory gift for which we can all be thankful. Tzod crawls across an alien plain to...

Now this is a SXSW film. All the ingredients are in place to make Philip Gelatt and Morgan Galen King’s “The Spine of Night” the next great cult hit to come out of the festival: it’s an ultra-violent (great) rotoscoped fantasy (very cool) featuring the voice work of no less than Richard E. Grant and Lucy Lawless (sold). Premiering at next week’s virtual SXSW Film Festival, “The Spine of Night” looks like the sort of special festival find people would chatter about after a particularly wild midnight screening, but now film fans can watch it in the safety of their own homes.
Billed as a “hand-rotoscoped epic fantasy inspired by the cult classic works of animators Ralph Bakshi and Frank Franzetta,” the film “is set in a fantasy land ripe with magic and intrigue where a dark force is unleashed sending mankind into an age of ruin.

It's a difficult task to review a film where it's best to go in as blind as possible. They Remain's plot and characters are best kept as neatly under wraps as possible as the most enjoyable viewing experience is trying to piece it all together yourself. That being said, They Remain is an enjoyable albeit a bit flawed psychological thriller.
The barebones premise of The Remain is that two scientists are tasked with surveying an area of land of some importance. They are under the employ of a shadowy corporation that sadly never becomes more involved or integral to the plot.
The story starts out very strong and drops you right into the middle of what's going on without any handholding. In fact, I wish more films were brave enough to treat their audience like They Remain does. But sadly the plot and characters get somewhat boring to watch as...

Isolation can play funny tricks on you. But then, how do you know what's just a trick of the mind, and what might be real? In Philip Gelatt's sophomore feature They Remain, two people discover hidden corners of their minds that slowly take over, corners filled with (possibly) irrational fear and hallucinations, aided by the haunted landscape and their own misgivings. Two scientists, Keith (William Jackson Harper) and Jessica (Rebecca Henderson), are hired by a private company and sent to an isolated site once occupied by a murderous cult, to investigate reported mysterious and unusual behaviour by the local wildlife. While Jessica analyses biological samples in their makeshift lab, Keith makes daily trips into the forest to set up various cameras and replace their memory...

They Remain opened theatrically New York (Village East Cinema) on Friday, March 2 and Los Angeles (Laemmle Music Hall) on Friday, March 9 with a national release to follow.
