Lad. For many, the word conjures images of toxic masculinity – lad mags, lad culture, LadBible (before it went mainstream). But for a young Liam Williams, living in the small town of Garforth near Leeds, it was simply a term of endearment. “When I grew up, ‘lad’ was quite a Yorkshire…” he pauses, careful not to claim “lad” as entirely his. “It’s not exclusively Yorkshire, but it’s quite a Yorkshire idiom. As we were becoming teenagers and playing with more adult identities and imitating parents or people, older men, I guess, I remember ‘lad’ coming into our vocabulary. It created a nice sense of belonging in the group.” He adopts a Yorkshire accent, presumably reminiscent of one he once had: “’Ow’re you doing lad, ’ey up lad.”

The BBC Studios Comedy Productions will conclude this summer in the UK, with writer and creator Liam Williams confirming the news on Twitter today just minutes ago.
Update for my followers: Ladhood series 3 will broadcast 'end of summer'. It's likely to be, I am in many ways sad to say, the final series, as I have simply run out of memories. Thanks to everyone who's watched or worked on the show. I am beyond grateful.https://t.co/ZSoV3rHtvJ

After the death of their beloved Gran (Stephanie Fayerman), two half-brothers, Omar (Antonio Aakeel) and Pete (Jack Carroll) set off for Blackpool in order to find Omar’s long-missing father. Omar was, as Gran points out, the result of a “youthful dalliance” between his mother and a desi man she met on a night out, and whom she never saw again. And although Gran previously said she knew little more than that, she leaves Omar a letter that tells him more of what she really knew about his father. Armed with his birth certificate, his mother’s diary, and a photograph taken on the fateful evening, and with his grandmother’s urn and his disabled brother in tow, Omar decides it’s time to finally find out who his father really is.
Director and co-writer (along with David Isaac) Jason Wingard first explored this theme in his 2014 short film Going to Mecca.

People trying to find their real parents is a theme that has been done a fair bit in cinema for a long time now. The latest voice to tell the story is that of Jason Wingard’s, who attempts to put a fresh spin to the tale and, for the most part, succeeds.

Movie: 'West Is West'; Cast: Om Puri, Linda Bassett, Ila Arun, Jimi Mistry and Aqib Khan; Director: Andy DeEmmony; Rating: *** 1/2 - an endearing slice-of-life drama.
Twelve years have passed since 'East Is East', the cult film on the blithe angst of the Asian diaspora in England, was made. In the sequel, which, let me quickly add, is a decent engaging and warm follow-up.

West Is West
Directed by Andy DeEmmony
Written by Ayub Khan-Din
UK, 2010
Nothing’s more frustrating than squandered potential. For every lackluster movie that feels hobbled from the start by a flawed premise or awkward miscasting, there’s a film that seems to understand the ingredients necessary for good storytelling, only to get the proportions horribly wrong. The latter is the clear case for West Is West, an at-first promising dramedy that quickly goes astray.
Set four years after the events of its predecessor, 1999′s East Is East, West opens in 1975 Manchester, where the British-Pakistani Khan clan are still working through the difficulties of their mixed racial heritage in a frequently less-than-tolerant social climate. Iron-willed but ethically shaky patriarch George (Om Puri) is increasingly distressed by the rebellious behavior of his youngest son, Sajid (newcomer Aqib Khan), whose constant racially-driven bullying at school leads to his calling out his father...

The transformative power of art is demonstrated literally here, but that doesn't preclude poetry or emotion from this exceptional documentary. Brazilian artist Vik Muniz travels to the world's largest landfill, outside São Paulo, where he makes giant portraits of the hard-up refuse pickers out of the very trash they sort – thus turning it into expensive art. The lives of the characters (proud eco-champions as much as disadvantaged individuals) and the irresistibly uplifting treatment will leave you pondering the true value of things.
Animal Kingdom (15)
(David Michôd, 2010, Aus) James Frecheville, Guy Pearce, Jacki Weaver. 113 mins
There are few action scenes and fewer laughs in this tense, brooding Aussie thriller, which sidesteps the gangster cliches to study the volatile dynamic of a cornered criminal family. It's polished in plotting and execution, despite the concerted lack of glamour.

Following in the gigantic wake of East Is East which remains one of the most critically acclaimed and internationally well-received British independent films, West Is West is a surprisingly entertaining if slightly unrealized sequel.
The new and improved 15 year old Sajid Khan emerges with spectacular ease in Aqib Khan and his bald adolescent contempt for, well, just about everything. School is simply a reluctant game of cat and mouse (where he’s always the mouse) whilst home is ruled by the ever-turbulent dictator George Khan. Sajid is therefore stuck between the proverbial rock and a hard place in 1975 Salford and rebels like any disillusioned teenager would: petty crime, filthy language and a quiet but seething resentment of the world, East as well as West.
In a final attempt to discipline the boy and awaken his cultural heritage, George leaves his long-suffering but devoted wife Ella in charge of the family...

It’s been more than ten years since George Khan first appeared, effing and blinding on to the big screen in East Is East and now he’s back.
Om Puri has taken up his role again as the over-bearing British Pakistani father and Bradford chippy-owner in West is West but with a few big differences.
HeyUGuys caught up with the actor in the chambers of The Courthouse Hotel where he told us all about George’s guilty past as we delved into a few of the secrets to be unveiled in West Is West.
What made you want to come back to the project?
Well, it’s a fascinating and relevant story. East Is East was a successful film and there was no reason why there should not be a sequel. And there was money in it from a producer’s point of view, although I’m not a producer on the film.

In East Is East‘s greatly anticipated sequel West Is West, Sajid Khan is still a weird, mixed up boy even if he has ditched the Parka.
Despite the uncanny resemblance to actor Jordan Routledge who played the orginal runt of the Khan litter, 17 year old Aqib Khan was most definitely something of a find for producer Leslee Udwin as he deftly picks up where Sajid left off over a decade ago only a few years older and in the throes of a pubescent identity crisis.
West Is West will be Aqib’s début professional performance which comes as something as a shock as the kid has clearly got a lot of talent! HeyUGuys got to hear about the excitement first hand as well as just how he’s been coping in his new-found limelight.
Did you ever consider acting as a possible career before West Is West?
Never, I never thought about it.

The much-anticipated sequel to the award-winning East is East, West is West rejoins the dysfunctional Khan family in Salford, where youngest son Sajid (newcomer Aqib Khan) is deep in teenage crisis under heavy assault both from his father’s (Om Puri) tyrannical insistence on Pakistani tradition, and from the fierce bullies in the schoolyard. In a last attempt to ‘sort him out’, father and son set out for the Punjab, back to the first Mrs Khan, and the family and farm George left behind 30 years earlier. Before long, the second Mrs Khan, Ella, arrives with a small entourage from Salford, England, to sort out the mess, past and present.

A Bradford teenager who landed the lead in the new East Is East sequel
Who is he?
A Bradford teenager who landed the lead in West Is West, the East Is East sequel, after one of his teachers spotted the character description – cheeky little Asian boy – and told him he'd be perfect. He was the last candidate the producers saw for Sajid, the youngest of the Khan kids.
Wasn't he the little one who never took his parka off in East Is East?
That's him. Hid in the coal shed. West Is West is set a few years later. Now he's an angry teenager, who gets hauled from Salford to Pakistan by his dad to sort him out – he wanders around rural Punjab giving people V-signs.
Why didn't they get the same actor for Sajid?

This is the Pure Movies review of West is West, directed by Andy DeEmmony and starring Aqib Khan, Om Puri, Linda Bassett, Robert Pugh, Thomas Russell, Jimi Mistry, Vanessa Hehir, John Branwell, Yograj Singh and Vijay Raaz. Written by Richard Parkin. Eleven years after the hugely loved East is East, Ayub Khan-Din continues the story of Khan family and their tussle with life in-between two worlds. West is West jumps forward four years from the last instalment to 1975, taking a focus on the youngest of the khans, Sajid (Aquib Khan). Despite everything that happened in the last film Sajid is finding that, growing into a teen, he is beginning to face similar problems with his life as a British-Pakistani living in Salford. With an English mother and a broad Lancashire accent, Sajid feels more British than Pakistani. This, however, doesn’t’ stop the kids at school seeing him differently. His...

This belated sequel to East Is East provides chuckles but fails to get to grips with the troubles facing British Muslims and Pakistan
It's been more than a decade since the Ayub Khan-Din-scripted East Is East liberated British-Asian cinema from the furrowed-brow earnestness that had largely been its lot. It managed to combine an effervescent cheerfulness with simple but effective points about how ethnic identity changes across successive generations of immigrants. No doubt with one eye on current political debate, this belated sequel looks to develop the theme and provide context to the arguments about immigration.
The first film was set in 1971; this one takes place five years later. Almost all of the principal cast has reassembled: Om Puri is patriarch George Khan, baffled fury personified; Linda Bassett is his English second wife, Ella; Emil Marwa and Jimi Mistry are among his brood of Salford-raised sons (the latter, though,...
