Sunday’s 75th Writers Guild of America Awards will conclude the guild season (and a four-guild kudos weekend). Will they portend good things to come at the Oscars for the winners?
“Everything Everywhere All at Once,” written by Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, and “Women Talking,” written by Sarah Polley, are projected to win the Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay prizes, respectively. The caveat, of course, is that neither is facing its top Oscar competition at WGA due to the guild’s eligibility requirements. Martin McDonagh‘s “The Banshees of Inisherin” script, which won the Golden Globe and BAFTA, is Awol in original, as is Oscar nominee “Triangle of Sadness.” And BAFTA’s adapted screenplay champ “All Quiet on the Western Front,” written by Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell, is ineligible, along with Oscar nominee “Living.”

Ninety-five members of the Writers Guild of America have signed a letter sent to the guild’s board of directors urging that it divest from gun companies and any companies that support the NRA.
The letter, sent to the Board Tuesday, warns “Gun violence enabled by the ready availability of military grade weapons, has become one of the biggest threats to the safety and security of the American people.” The letter continues, “We urge the WGA and the WGA Pension Plan to divest of all stocks of any gun or ammunition manufacturer, and any company that provides material support to the gun industry lobbying organization called The National Rifle Association, whether through donations, deductions or other means (e.g. Federal Express), until such time as sensible national gun reform legislation is passed.”

Smart Girls at the Party will attract plenty of bibliophiles with its newest project. The digital network, co-founded by Amy Poehler and owned by Legendary Entertainment, has launched a literary-themed web series called Book Report with Aisha Muharrar, hosted by the titular comedy writer.

After premiering Thursday night (Jan. 23) on Adult Swim, the fourth "Greatest Event in TV History" has made it's way online and, as promised, it's pretty great.
Adam Scott and Paul Rudd recreated the intro to "Bosom Buddies," and had the help of the show's original stars, Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari, along the way. The intro itself also features Gillian Jacobs, Mo Collins, Aisha Muharrar, Helen Slayton-Hughes and Aidy Bryant.
This was touted as the final "Greatest Event in TV History," but it shouldn't take too long to figure out whether or not that's true. With so many old shows out there, these could go on forever.

Last night, Adult Swim aired the fourth and final installment in Adam Scott's Greatest Event in Television History series, in which he and some of his pals create frame-for-frame reenactments of the opening credits for eighties TV shows (after ten minutes of mockumentary footage about the making of the reenactment). He'd already tackled Simon & Simon, Hart to Hart, and Too Close for Comfort, so last night, he teamed with Paul Rudd to remake the lengthy, exposition-heavy opening to the Tom Hanks–Peter Scolari drag sitcom Bosom Buddies. (Gillian Jacobs takes the Donna Dixon role, Aidy Bryant does the late Wendie Jo Sperber, Parks and Rec writer Aisha Muharrar is Telma Hopkins, and Mo Collins nails Holland Taylor in just one face.) Watch the re-creation and the original side-by-side and marvel at the unicycle and handball skills Adam Scott had to master to pull this off. And how long did it...

Exclusive: NBC is renewing its efforts to bring animation back to its comedy lineup. The network has given a presentation order to Mystery Island, an animated comedy voiced and co-written by The Office alum Ed Helms. Helms has teamed on the project with former Office writer-producer Graham Wagner. The duo, who met on the long-running NBC workplace comedy, are co-writing Mystery Island — set on an island where holidaymakers get marooned after their cruise ship malfunctions — for Universal TV where Helms’ newly launched company Pacific Electric Picture Co. has a first-look deal. The two executive produce with Pacific Electric Picture Evp Michael Falbo. This marks the second sale for both Wagner and Pacific Electric Picture. Wagner also is co-writing/exec producing NBC’s live-action The Younger Man, a starring vehicle for Justin Long, who is co-writing with his brother Christian, with Jason Winer exec producing. Pacific Electric Picture also has a...

According to Deadline, Ed Helms (The Office, The Hangover) is producing a new comedy for NBC. The show will be written by Aisha Muharrar, who is a producer and former writer for Parks and Recreation, and will center around a teenager who wants to be the next Oprah. Ed Helms, star of NBC’s biggest comedy series of the past five years, The Office, is producing a new comedy project for the network written by Aisha Muharrar. Meanwhile, Fox has bought a comedy produced by one of the stars of its current flagship comedy series, New Girl‘s Jake Johnson. It is written by Matt Spicer. The Aisha Muharrar NBC project centers on a gifted teen who aspires to be the next Oprah, but lacks the social skills and life experience, so she uses her family and friends as the reluctant case studies in her mission to solve everyone’s problems, including her own. Universal TV, where Ed Helms’ newly launched company Pacific Electric Picture Co. has a first-look deal, is producing, with Helms and Pacific Electric Picture Evp Michael Falbo executive producing. Muharrar, repped by UTA and Ziffren Brittenham, is currently a producer on NBC/Uni TV’s Parks & Recreation,...

Community, Season 4, Episode 10: “Intro to Knots”
Written by Andy Bobrow
Directed by Tristram Shapeero
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Et on NBC
Let’s talk for a second about Abed Nadir. In a lot of ways, he seems emblematic of the problems that have hamstrung Community’s fourth season. As soon as he arrives at Jeff’s Christmas party, he is actively trying to mold it into a Die Hard homage. This isn’t unprecedented behavior for Abed, he shaped what is perhaps the series’ best episode “Critical Film Studies” into a My Dinner With Andrew homage, but recently it seems to be his sole motivating concern week in and week out. It feels like a shift in his character. If we take a look at “Cooperative Calligraphy,” an episode “Intro to Knots” closely resembles. Abed constantly comments “It’s a bottle episode!” but he is not attempting to propagate it.

30 Rock, Season 7, Episode 8, “My Whole Life is Thunder”
Written by Jack Burditt & Colleen McGuinness
Directed by Linda Mendoza
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Et on NBC
Is there a show outside of 30 Rock that would be audacious enough to follow one wedding episode with another? Perhaps “wedding episode” is a misnomer, as the actual wedding is buried in the post-episode tag, but the threat of Jenna’s wedding (to Paul, who it had seemed the show had forgotten this season) is pervasive, inspiring thoughts of ‘Could they? No, they wouldn’t…” until they finally do. This is yet another example of the startling liveliness 30 Rock has recovered in the face of its imminent demise.
If last week’s episode seemed preoccupied with mortality, “My Whole Life is Thunder”—a rather ominous title—goes all in and features a funeral, that of Jack’s mother, Colleen. That her funeral ends up being...

Parks and Recreation, Season 5, Episode 1, “Ms. Knope Goes to Washington”
Written by Aisha Muharrar
Directed by Dean Holland
Airs Thursdays at 9:30pm Et on NBC
Tonight we return to Pawnee, Indiana with a brief detour through Washington, DC. Leslie and Andy are visiting Ben, who has accepted Jennifer’s offer to run a congressional campaign and taken April along with him as an assistant. Like much of the episode, this material is familiar but not in any way deficient. Andy’s reactions to Leslie’s tour of the national monuments recall his earlier visit to the Grand Canyon, and the look at what tour guide Andy would look like in the end-tag is one of the episode’s funnier moments.
What elevates this plot is Leslie’s emotional reaction to attending a party with Ben populated by DC’s equivalent to the A-list. When Leslie reveals she is a city-councilwoman,...

One of my favorite shows is Parks and Recreation. I recently had the chance to sit down, drink iced tea and talk with staff writer, Aisha Muharrar. Aisha penned several of my favorite episodes, including "Born and Raised" and "Operation Ann" this season. Here are ten things that you should know about Aisha, who is both insanely talented and a much more patient iced tea drinker than me.
1. Even when she was just a kid, Aisha knew she wanted to be a writer. While in high school, she wrote a non-fiction book entitled More than a Label. Aisha attended Harvard, where she majored in English and wrote for The Harvard Lampoon to hone her comedy writing skills. (An avid fan of The Simpsons growing up, she was aware that this was where many of The Simpsons' writers first got their start.)
2. She loved The WB shows (Felicity, Buffy, Dawson's Creek...

30 Rock, Season 6, Episode 5, “Today You Are a Man”
Written by Ron Weiner
Directed by Jeff Richmond
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Et on NBC
This week’s 30 Rock seems like an improvement on the season to date, yet it more or less recycles last week’s Kenneth plot. The staff at Tgs didn’t notice Kenneth’s absence when Jack discontinued the page program (didn’t they make a note of his absence during last week’s party scene?), so Kenneth rebels by switching places with another page and instead of Jack realizing how difficult life without Kenneth is like last week we have the writers experiencing the same epiphany. This is helped along by the dependable Kristen Schaal’s appearance as Hazel Wassername. Hazel is Suze Orman’s page at NBC so when she takes over for Kenneth he fills in for her. This leads to an extraordinarily awkward scene with Mrs.

2012 Writers Guild Award Nominations
The 2012 Writers Guild Award nominations were announced yesterday and as with the Emmys cable led the drama categories. Previous nominees Boardwalk Empire and Breaking Bad and new series Homeland all racked up 3 nominations in the drama field. The Good Wife is the only network drama featuring in the Drama Series category, with Dexter getting the other slot and sadly Friday Night Lights missed out.
If you're wondering where Mad Men is; the field of eligibility for these awards runs from December, 1 2010 until November 30, 2011. This makes the Writers Guild Awards similar to the Golden Globes rather than the Emmys regarding the submission time frame. The last new episode of Mad Men aired in October 2010 so it can't be included; yes it has been more than a year since there was new episode of Mad Men.
Network fared much better in the comedy front with Emmy success Modern Family...

Welcome to your Monday morning television briefing. There is major recasting underway at CBS' comedy Mad Love, which is allegedly thisclose to scoring a thirteen-episode midseason order from the network. According to Deadline's Nellie Andreeva, Sarah Chalke (Scrubs) is said to be in talks to come aboard the comedy, where she would replace Minka Kelly (Friday Night Lights) as Kate on the Sony Pictures Television and CBS Studios-produced project. Meanwhile, Lizzy Caplan (Party Down) has backed out of the project after she couldn't commit to the series and her role, Connie, will also be recast. (It's the second wave of recastings on the pilot as Dan Fogler and Ashley Austin Morris were previously replaced by Tyler Labine and Lizzy Caplan respectively.) (Deadline) Hollywood Reporter's Carita Rizzo offers an insightful behind-the-scenes look at NBC's critically acclaimed comedy Parks and Recreation, which recently wrapped its second season, by spending the day with...
