This year’s box office hit Evil Dead Rise is being unleashed on 4K and Blu-ray on June 27 – with no special features, we’re bummed to report – but it’s also streaming at home right now.
In addition to being up for grabs on various VOD platforms, Evil Dead Rise also made its debut on the Max – formerly HBO Max – streaming service today, June 23, 2023.
As you may recall, Evil Dead Rise was originally going straight-to-Max, but the pivot to theatrical ended up being a profitable move for Warner Bros. At the worldwide box office, the well-received sequel scared up a whopping $146.3 million worldwide in theaters.

Legendary Entertainment and Sam Raimi‘s Ghost House Pictures are teaming up to bring an adaptation of My Best Friend’s Exorcism author Grady Hendrix’s best-selling horror novel How to Sell a Haunted House to the screen, Variety reports. Hendrix is writing the screenplay adaptation himself, and James Ashcroft – who made his feature directorial debut with the 2021 horror film Coming Home in the Dark – is on board to direct.
Hendrix’s novel (pick up a copy Here) has the following description: When Louise finds out her parents have died, she dreads going home. She doesn’t want to leave her daughter with her ex and fly to Charleston. She doesn’t want to deal with her family home, stuffed to the rafters with the remnants of her father’s academic career and her mother’s lifelong obsession with puppets and dolls. Best-selling horror author Grady Hendrix’s latest novel, How to Sell a Haunted House, was released earlier this year, and an adaptation is already on the way.
Legendary Entertainment won movie rights, per Variety, and tapped Coming Home in the Dark filmmaker James Ashcroft to helm the adaptation.
If that’s not intriguing enough, Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures will produce the film with Hendrix (My Best Friend’s Exorcism) and Adam Goldworm’s Aperture Entertainment. Romel Adam and Jose Cañas will oversee for Ghost House.
Hendrix will adapt his own novel for the screen.
Fans of Hendrix’s novel know this is no ordinary haunted house.
The novel’s official synopsis: “When Louise finds out her parents have died, she dreads going home. She doesn’t want to leave her daughter with her ex and fly to Charleston. She doesn’t want to deal with her family home,...

Legendary Entertainment has won the movie rights to Grady Hendrix’s runaway bestseller “How to Sell a Haunted House.”
The studio behind “Dune” took the novel over several bids. The book received critical acclaim and an instant following thanks to its dynamic storytelling — pulling off genuine fright with its evil puppet antagonist, and a deeply emotional story about the horrors of family.
New Zealand-based Māori filmmaker James Ashcroft is attached to direct the project. Ashcroft made his mark in the indie genre space with the bleak “Coming Home in the Dark,” which premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and was later acquired by Netflix. Hendrix will adapt his own novel for the screen.
“Hendrix has created a wholly original creature in Pupkin, one as iconic as Chuckie or Pennywise,” wrote The New York Times in its January review. “Pupkin represents the losses of growing up. He’s the vehicle of an unfulfilled mother’s pain,...

With Evil Dead Rise now in theaters around the world, I had a chance to catch up with Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland, who told me all about their introductions to the original "Evil Dead" films and their on-set experience!
New Line Cinema and Renaissance Pictures present a return to the iconic horror franchise, “Evil Dead Rise,” from writer/director Lee Cronin (“The Hole in the Ground”). The movie stars Lily Sullivan, Alyssa Sutherland, Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols (“Reminiscence”) and introducing Nell Fisher (“Northspur”).
Moving the action out of the woods and into the city, “Evil Dead Rise” tells a twisted tale of two estranged sisters, played by Sutherland and Sullivan, whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.

Lee Cronin is very particular about blood.
Cronin, the Irish writer and director of “Evil Dead Rise,” the fifth feature installment in the cult horror series, lights up when discussing gore on set.
“We used 6,500 liters [1,717 gallons] of blood on the movie,” he said. “That is real, sticky, cooked movie blood. We had to hire out this industrial kitchen to cook the blood and keep it fresh, be able to heat it up, because characters are covered in it. There was a lot of management of liquid in this movie. I wanted blood to be a character, so it was important we got the viscosity and look just right.”
Beyond that, Cronin was keen to keep every element of the production top-notch, given the legacy of Sam Raimi’s series. Before Raimi was a blockbuster name, helming the “Spider-Man” trilogy of the 2000s and VFX-heavy projects like 2022’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,...

There’s just no telling when Ash will run into a deadite. At a screening of the upcoming horror film Evil Dead Rise at the SXSW film festival, during a Q&a session with the cast and crew, an audience member became possessed, not by the Book of the Dead but by the Book of Anger, as he shouted out to the filmmakers on stage, “This movie f**king sucks!” Naturally, the audience felt how disrespectful this was and proceeded to boo the heckler as he made his way out.
According to Deadline, the heckler threw his popcorn in a fit of rage and stormed out after he had been approached by staff members following his little tantrum. The cast and crew laughed it off in disbelief, but the enraged audience member would flip them off before exiting and attempted to yell more obscenities as he was drowned out by the audience’s jeers.

Here there be spoilers. Consider yourself warned. After spending years web-slinging around New York City with Spider-Man, Sam Raimi finally returned to his horror roots with Drag Me to Hell. The supernatural horror movie starred Alison Lohman as Christine, a bank loan officer who is cursed when she denies an elderly woman’s request to extend her mortgage. Over the last fourteen years, fans have wondered whether they might get a sequel to the gruesome feature, and Sam Raimi recently teased that Drag Me to Hell 2 is a possibility.
During a Reddit Ama (Ask Me Anything), a Redditor asked Sam Raimi if there was any chance of Drag Me to Hell 2. The director answered: “The team at Ghost House Pictures: Romel Adam and Jose Canas, are trying to come up with a story that would work and I’m anxious to hear if they do!” Of course, this is...

The ending to 2009’s Drag Me to Hell damn sure made good on the promise of the title, with Sam Raimi‘s return to horror suggesting that there wasn’t anything left to tell in regards to that particular story. In fact, Raimi had told Bloody Disgusting back in 2019 that the reason there was never a sequel was simply because the ending of the first movie was so definitive.
Raimi explained to us, “I don’t have a story, because in my mind the character got killed, and worse. So I didn’t know how to proceed with the sequel. Usually, for me, I’m left with a character that I really am interested [in] or a concept that really feels like it needs to continue. But this is such a definitive ending that in my mind I didn’t know where to start with a sequel.”

The article contains spoilers for "Drag Me to Hell."
It looks like a particular cursed button might be making life hell for someone in the future. According to a recent Reddit Ama with Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Sam Raimi, the creative team of the upcoming movie "65," the possibility exists for a sequel to the 2009 Raimi horror film "Drag Me to Hell." Even as a person who isn't always the biggest fan of horror films — not because they aren't incredible, but because I'm a huge 'fraidy cat — this was one I loved. The idea of a return to the curse of a woman punishing someone for lacking compassion is intriguing.

It’s still not clear when or if Universal Pictures is going to let director Paul Feig (Ghostbusters: Answer the Call) move forward with his Universal Monsters project Dark Army – but instead of just waiting around for that, Feig is teaming up with genre legend Sam Raimi for a horror comedy called Suburban Hell! Feig will be producing the movie through his company Feigco Entertainment while Raimi produces through his company Ghost House.
Based on a novel by Maureen Kilmer, Suburban Hell will tell the story of a tight-knit group of suburban moms whose friendship is put to the ultimate test when one of them becomes possessed by an evil spirit.

Evil Dead Rise, the 2023 entry in the Evil Dead franchise, just released a bloody and terrifying two-minute trailer that’s everything you’d want or expect from an Evil Dead project. A chainsaw’s involved, of course, but that seems tame compared to what else the trailer teases is in store for horror fans.
Vikings‘ Alyssa Sutherland stars along with Lily Sullivan (I Met a Girl), Morgan Davies (Storm Boy), Gabrielle Echols (Reminiscence), and newcomer Nell Fisher.
Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground) wrote and directed the grisly horror film. Cronin’s behind-the-scenes team includes director of photography Dave Garbett, production designer Nick Bassett, editor Bryan Shaw, and costume designer Sarah Voon. Stephen McKeon wrote the score.
Evil Dead Rise has Evil Dead creator Sam Raimi and “Ash” himself, Bruce Campbell, involved as executive producers. Ash vs Evil Dead‘s Rob Tapert produces. Additional executive producers include John Keville,...

Exclusive: Lionsgate has picked up an action comedy pitch from writers Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Mamrie Hart for Zoë Bell to direct, inspired by the stuntwoman’s viral short film Boss Bitch Fight Challenge.
The new project will be produced by Rob Tapert and Romel Adam alongside Rock Shaink and Dash Aiken for Romark Entertainment. Smith and Hart will also executive produce. In the short, Bell is home and bored during the pandemic lockdown, and picks a fight with her Boss Bitch friends. Glorious mayhem ensues.

The horror genre is often overlooked and underappreciated in awards spaces. That’s what makes “You’re Dead Hélène” from Michiel Blanchart, which is one of the shortlisted contenders for live action short, an exciting addition to the Oscar conversation.
After dreaming of working in the movies and making shorts with his friends while growing up in France’s countryside, Blanchart decided to go back to his native country to study in one of the best-known cinema schools in Belgium: the Institute of Media Arts. He directed several shorts both in and outside of the school curriculum during his time there, including “L’Annonce,” “Lulu” and “Dynaman,” which went on to play at multiple festivals in Belgium, two of which ended up winning the BeTVaward (at the Brussels Short Film Festival and the Fiff in Namur).

New Line has made it official that a sequel to the The Evil Dead is in the works for WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max. The film, Evil Dead Rise, will be directed and written by Irish filmmaker Lee Cronin and star Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan.
The original 1981 pic’s filmmaking team is back for Evil Dead Rise: Sam Raimi, who directed, wrote and executive produced Evil Dead, will serve as EP here; Robert Tapert, who served as EP and producer on the first, will produce; and Bruce Campbell, who starred as Ashley J. Williams and executive produced the original will EP on the second go-round. He will not star in the next chapter here.
Moving the action out of the woods and into the city, Evil Dead Rise tells a twisted tale of two estranged sisters — played by Sutherland (TV’s The Mist and Vikings) and Sullivan — whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable
Cronin was chosen by Raimi, Tapert and Campbell to spearhead the sequel given his feature directorial debut on the 2019 horror title The Hole in the Ground.
I understand Evil Dead Rises is being made strictly for HBO Max. There is a chance the movie will get a theatrical release in those offshore territories where the streaming service isn’t available. The 1981 original was a cult movie, only grossing $3 million worldwide theatrically, but it found a bigger audience in the home entertainment arena. The 1987 sequel grossed close to $6M domestic. The threequel, 1992’s Army of Darkness, made $11.5M domestic. Out of all of these, Fede Álvarez’s 2013 reboot for TriStar was a success with a $17M production and a $97.5M global box office gross.
Romel Adam, John Keville and Macdara Kelleher will also serve as EPs on Evil Dead Rises.
Said Raimi in a statement, “I’m thrilled to bring Evil Dead back to its original home at New Line 40 years after the release of the first film. The company’s history as pioneers of horror speaks for itself. I’m equally excited to be working with Lee Cronin, whose gifts as a storyteller make him the ideal filmmaker to continue the enduring legacy of the franchise.”
“At its core, Evil Dead is about ordinary people overcoming extraordinarily terrifying situations,” added Campbell, “I can’t wait for Alyssa and Lily to fill the blood-soaked shoes of those who have come before them and carry on that tradition.”
Said Cronin, “The Evil Dead movies filled my brain with terror and awe when I first saw them at nine years old. I am excited and humbled to be resurrecting the most iconic of evil forces for both the fans and a whole new generation.”
Richard Brener, President and Chief Creative Officer, New Line Cinema added, “New Line has a proud history of involvement in some of the most influential and enduring horror films of all time, and the original The Evil Dead was a landmark moment for the Studio. The movie transformed the genre and with each new installment, Sam, Rob and Bruce have continued to raise the bar. It’s exciting to have them back in the fold for Evil Dead Rise after all these years, especially as they bring with them an immense talent in director Lee Cronin. His inventive spirit and his reverence for the franchise make him the perfect director to unleash Evil Dead once again.”
Evil Dead Rise will be filmed on location in New Zealand, with post-production work completed in Ireland. With New Line releasing domestically, the film will be distributed by Canal Plus in the UK and Metropolitan in France.

With Easter weekend less than a month away, Sony announced today that it will be opening the Evan Spiliotopoulos’ Screen Gems supernatural PG-13 horror movie The Unholy on April 2.
The feature based on the James Herbert novel Shrine joins Warner Bros/Legendary’s theatrical release of Godzilla vs. Kong which is opening on Wednesday, March 31 (and also hitting HBO Max simultaneously) as the big wide releases for the holiday weekend. That period has traditionally been a robust time at the B.O. given how the frame coincides with spring break. During great pre-pandemic box office times, Warner Bros’ Batman v. Superman is the record B.O. opener for Easter weekend with $181M domestic, while Universal’s Furious 7 is second with $161.2M. There’s great hope in the industry that Los Angeles might have the go-ahead to reopen cinemas by Easter weekend. This past weekend, New York City reopened its...

In her review, Heather Wixson wrote that Nicolas Pesce's The Grudge is "a chilling and often poignant tale of terror," and if you missed it in theaters, you can soon experience the latest entry in the supernatural franchise from the comfort of your own (hopefully not cursed) home, as Sony Pictures is bringing The Grudge to Digital on March 10th, followed by a Blu-ray and DVD release on March 24th.
Described as "The Untold Chapter," The Grudge Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital releases will include several featurettes, extended scenes, and an alternate ending. The new footage is described as "scenes too gruesome for theaters," so perhaps we'll see even more of the movie's practical effects on the home media release.
