The Sudanese drama Goodbye Julia is continuing its impressive awards run, earning the Grand Jury Award for Best Narrative Feature over the weekend at the Sonoma International Film Festival in California.
Mohamed Kordofani directed the story set in the context of the secessionist movement that led to the establishment of the independent nation of South Sudan in 2011.
“We commend the festival for its impressive selection of narrative features and unanimously select Goodbye Julia as the best film,” jurors wrote. “An outstanding first feature from Mohamed Kordofani, anchored by two stellar performances from Eiman Yousif and Siran Riak, Goodbye Julia provides a glimpse into a culture and region that’s underrepresented and underexplored in contemporary cinema.”
The jury, comprised of Rosa Bosch (Begin Again Films), Tyler Coates (The Hollywood Reporter), Rebecca Fisher (Magnolia Pictures), Jason Hellerstein (Sideshow), and Julie Huntsinger (Telluride Film Festival), awarded a Special Mention to Hesitation Wound, describing...

The 27th Sonoma International Film Festival (March 20-24), as always, leaned into wine and food with the sold-out opening night U.S. premiere of Thomas Napper’s “Widow Clicquot” (Vertical Entertainment), starring Haley Bennett as the woman who saves the legendary winemaker’s legacy. The wine country film festival drew its highest audience attendance to date with a robust film slate programmed by artistic director Carl Spence (working with Executive Director Ginny Krieger), in his second year, including upcoming specialty fare like Luc Besson’s “DogMan” (Briarcliff Entertainment) starring Caleb Landry Jones in an incendiary performance, and Sony Pictures Classics’ raucous comedy “Wicked Little Letters,” starring Olivia Colman, along with a smattering of yummy wine and food events.
The five-day festival curated by Spence along with senior programmers Amanda Salazar and Ken Jacobson, showcased more than 100 films. Twenty-five countries were represented in this year’s lineup of 43 narrative features, 16 documentary features,...

Magnolia Pictures and Participant have partnered to jointly acquire North American rights to “The Grab,” a new documentary from “Blackfish” director Gabriela Cowperthwaite.
The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, follows journalists from The Center for Investigative Reporting as they work high-profile sources and utilize a cache of secret data to uncover the money and influence being used by countries, corporations and members of the uber-elite to control the planet’s most vital resources. Participant and Magnolia are positioning the film as a “high-stakes global thriller,” one that takes viewers from Arizona to Zambia as the moviemakers examine the food and water scarcity that’s resulting from this little-known power grab.
“We’re thrilled to reunite with our good friends at Participant and the great Gabriela Cowperthwaite who has, yet again, brought to light a nail biting, explosive, and essential story,” said Magnolia Pictures co-ceo’s Eamonn Bowles and Dori Begley.

Carey Mulligan highlighted the need to support children in war zones across the world at Variety’s Power of Women Presented by Lifteime event on Thursday.
Mulligan was honored for her work as a global ambassador for War Child UK, an organization focused on protecting children in conflict zones. The “Promising Young Woman” actor first became involved after receiving an invitation from CEO Rob Williams to join them on a trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2014, telling Variety in her Power of Women cover story that she was inspired to join the group after witnessing the transformative work the organization was doing with children who’d experienced disastrous trauma. Since joining, she’s also visited Iraq, Ukraine and Jordan.

Rob Williams is the CEO of War Child UK, an organization that protects children in conflict zones. Variety’s Power of Women honoree Carey Mulligan has been working with War Child since 2014.
It’s incredibly rare for an organisation to have a relationship with an ambassador that is genuinely transformational. But in the case of War Child and Carey Mulligan, this is absolutely the case.
Importantly, we didn’t ask Carey for help. She heard about us from her brother, and came into our office almost exactly 10 years ago to the day, with a very friendly dog. She simply asked whether there was anything she could do. At the time, we had no idea the kind of difference that she could make.
War Child was a small organisation back then. We had big goals, and in the year we met Carey we were feeling good about having provided life-saving help...

In her graceful portrayal of Felicia Montealegre Bernstein in “Maestro” — opposite director Bradley Cooper — Carey Mulligan turns what might have been Cooper’s solo performance into a duet. Born in Costa Rica and raised in Chile, Felicia is an up-and-coming actor in New York City when she goes to a party and meets Lenny, an ambitious conductor and composer. After they marry in 1951, she has three children with her lightning bolt of a husband, who is sexually oriented more toward men.
But she’s not pathetic; Felicia is Lenny’s partner in every sense of the word. In a way, Felicia is the consummate Mulligan performance: Her simmering interiority meshes with Cooper’s magnetism, which is Mulligan’s own form of conducting.
Mulligan first began talking to Cooper about “Maestro” in the summer of 2018, after he came to see her in the Off Broadway play “Girls & Boys.” Cooper had completed “A Star Is Born,...

Netflix has acquired worldwide rights to the Sundance award-winning documentary “Descendant,” by filmmaker Margaret Brown. Higher Ground, President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s production company, will present the Participant feature alongside Netflix later this year.
The film follows members of Africatown, a small community in Alabama, as they share their personal stories and community history as descendants of the Clotilda, the last known ship carrying enslaved Africans to the United States. The ship arrived in America 40 years after African slave trading became a capital offense. It was promptly burned and its existence denied, but “after a century shrouded in secrecy and speculation, descendants of the Clotilda’s survivors are reclaiming their story” in the film.

In the trailer, the four British visitors struggle to provide alibis, finding themselves in a trans-Atlantic game of cat and mouse.
Starring alongside Thurman are Kunal Nayyar (“The Big Bang Theory”), Noah Emmerich (“The Americans”), Georgina Campbell (“Black Mirror”), Elizabeth Henstridge (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”), Tom Rhys-Harries (“White Lines”), Elyes Gabel (“Scorpion”) and Angel Coulby (“Dancing on the Edge”).
Based on the Israeli series “False Flag,” “Suspicion” is led by showrunner and executive producer Rob Williams.

Proving that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Dave Bautista aren’t the only professional wrestlers from his generation with potential to have successful film careers, John Cena now looks to add something rather impressive to his resume. To be more specific, Variety reports that he’s currently in talks to star in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
Right now, it’s unknown which character Cena would potentially play in the upcoming blockbuster, but theories are already swirling. Considering how the Polka Dot Man and Peacemaker had previously been rumored, it could be either one of those. Conversely, the former WWE Champion may be suiting up as any number of characters to have appeared in a comic book penned by the likes of Jon Ostrander, Adam Glass or Rob Williams.
As you may have heard, Cena isn’t the only one with a question mark above his head, as recent...

After getting the rights for future Doctor Who comic adventures, Titan Comics – around the same time as Matt Smith’s run on the show ended – announced three new ongoing series featuring the Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors in adventures that would take place in between the already-aired TV seasons. With the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors adventures to bow first, around the debut of Peter Capaldi’s new Doctor.
Confession time: I’ve been hate-watching the latest series of Doctor Who for a number of episodes now. No matter how hard I try, I just cannot get behind the latest doctor or his latest adventures. So what’s a Who-fan to do in this situation? Go back to the previous incarnation of course! With the third issue now in stores I thought I’d go back to my favourite modern Doctor Who,...

As an ageless, time-travelling alien, you have plenty of, well, time to fit all sorts of adventures and mischief in. And obviously it isn't only us who thought this, as next week Titan Comics is launching not one but two Doctor Who comics.
Peter Capaldi might be taking command of the Tardis on the small screen, but that does not mean that the stories of the Tenth and Eleventh Doctor have ended. Titan has gathered an impressive lineup of comics talent to bring us the continuing adventures of David Tennant and Matt Smith's incarnations of the Time Lord.
Writer Nick Abadzis (Hugo Tate), artist Elena Casagrande (Suicide Risk) and colourist Arianna Florean are working on Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor, which sees the Tardis arrive in New York ahead of the Mexican Day of the Dead celebrations.
While the Doctor has just lost Donna, he finds himself on...

ITV has ordered a new four part drama series focusing on the work of a missing persons field unit dealing with serial killers.
Penned by Dci Banks and Holby City writer Rob Williams, Chasing Shadows follows the team in their pursuit of serial killers who prey on the vulnerable.
The series follows DS Sean Alexander, described as intense, socially awkward and a misfit, alongside his partner and stabilising influence Ruth Hattersley. Both parts are yet to be cast.
ITV's Director of Drama Steve November said: "It's a crime drama, but not a typical one as it is based around a missing persons unit. And it introduces two very individual and exciting new characters who we're very much looking forward to seeing."
Filming is due to commence in February and will be set in an urban area shot in the south east.
