Spoiler Alert: The following story contains details from the series finale of Apple TV+’s Dickinson.
Apple TV+’s comedy series Dickinson wrapped up its third and final season Thursday night, with Emily Dickinson (Hailee Steinfeld) and her loved ones looking to the future.
As the episode titled “This Was a Poet -” opens, Emily is visited in her family’s garden by Death (Wiz Khalifa), who is donning a new suit and suggests that she herself is in need of “a new look” — a “uniform” befitting her work as a poet. From his perspective, she’s at a point where she should look to “go farther and deeper” in her writing than ever before, and she can do so only by separating herself from other peoples’ expectations, the strictures of which are embodied in the corset she’s long been forced to wear.

The standing ovation was inevitable.
Not just because audiences getting to their feet and applauding has felt perfunctory and expected for decades. Pass Over is being lauded as the first play staged on Broadway since the coronavirus pandemic forced all live performances to stop in March 2020. And at the top of this performance during the official opening Sunday matinee at the August Wilson Theatre on August 22nd, the thousand or so people in attendance were greeted and welcomed and congratulated for being “one of the first audiences back to see a real Broadway play.

Almost 18 months after the last new show opened on Broadway – the musical “The Girl from the North Country,” which bowed on March 5, 2020 – the New York theatre community celebrated the rialto’s return with the premiere of “Pass Over.” Antoinette Chinonye Nwandu’s play opened at the August Wilson Theatre on August 22 under the direction of Danya Taymor.
Inspired by both Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” and the book of Exodus, “Pass Over” occurs under the glow of a single streetlight. With a deft balance of comedy and horror, joy and sorrow, Nwandu explores centuries of systemic racism, including the plantation and the present, through the conversations between the indefatigably optimistic Moses (Jon Michael Hill) and Kitch (Namir Smallwood), which are punctuated by the two different white men (both played by Gabriel Ebert) who disrupt their space.

This summer’s big New York City performances have lugged considerable metaphorical baggage, from the giddy, vaxxed-but-maskless return of the Springsteen on Broadway concert during the pre-Delta shine of June, the resurgent Covid delays of Shakespeare in the Park and finally last night’s aborted, starry concert in Central Park, when the sky itself seemed to tell pop’s mightiest stalwarts, eh, not quite yet.
Tonight’s performance at the August Wilson Theatre of Antoinette Chinonye Nwandu’s thrilling Pass Over, the first Broadway play of the post-shutdown era, will, happily or not, carry some weighty burdens of its own. Forget the random media reports of the production’s maybe, maybe-not financial struggles – seriously, who isn’t struggling financially these days?
Equally unfair is asking Pass Over, or any other single Broadway production, to somehow reflect or embody all that’s happened in our world over the last 17 months of illness and death,...

Though Broadway as an industry has yet to definitively rule on whether Covid vaccinations will be required of audience members this fall, a second production – Lincoln Center Theater’s production of Pass Over at the Jujamcyn-owned August Wilson Theatre – has announced that the policy will be enforced when the play begins previews next month.
With the announcement, Pass Over becomes the second Broadway production to require audience vaccinations, following the arrival in June of Springsteen on Broadway at the Jujamcyn-owned St. James Theatre. The two-show trend could suggest how Broadway, in general, will deal with the ongoing Covid situation when many more shows return in September.
The Pass Over production, which begins previews Aug. 4 and officially opens Sept. 12, indicated that producers will “revisit” the policy for possible revision in September “or sooner,” if necessary. The vaccination policy, for now, will be in effect for the month of August.

The forthcoming third season of Mr. Mercedes is flipping the script in a way. While Season 2 was sourced from the End of Watch, the third book in the Stephen King crime novel series, season 3 will center on events of the third book, Finders Keepers.
At TCA, director and executive producer Jack Bender explained the reason behind the flip.
“At the end on season 1, because the focus on the show as this love-hate affair between Brady Hartsfield and Bill Hodges and because of the condition that we left our hero-villain, played by Harry Treadaway — in almost comatose after his head was bashed in– we had to figure out a way to have him on the show in an active way,” said Bender. “We came up with a version that wasn’t going to be Finders Keepers. Netflix announced on Friday that it has acquired the rights to Israeli filmmaker Gideon Raff’s “The Red Sea Diving Resort” starring Chris Evans.
The film was written and directed by Raff, known for his creation of the Channel 2 thriller drama series “Prisoners of War,” which was adapted in the U.S. into the Emmy-winning Showtime series “Homeland.”

Just from glancing at this film’s title you might think that you’re in for another frothy “rom-com”, or perhaps a peppy teen comedy that ends with a “make-over’ montage prior to a jubilant dance number at the senior prom. Well, you’d be mistaken, maybe pleasantly mistaken. Though one name is mentioned in its title, this sweet little “indie” flick really concerns that lady and her older sister, Bianca, who’s found her fella’. She’s the one playing “cupid”, a challenge since her sis’ must deal with many, many challenges. This tale is a search for romance, but also a love story of these young women, a relationship that is tested when Jane Wants A Boyfriend.
As the film begins, Bianca (Eliza Dushku) is in the last days of rehearsal as the fairy queen Titania in a big new stage production of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night...

Keira Knightley was making her Broadway debut in the first preview performance of Thérèse Raquin when she was interrupted by a man who began screaming at her in the middle of the scene, AP reports. The fan reportedly stood up in the theater's mezzanine level and announced his love for the actress; when she stayed in character, he allegedly shouted out, "Five seconds is too long to wait for a response!" Before he could be escorted out by security, the man was able to throw a bouquet of flowers onto the stage, where they were soon kicked off by Knightley's co-star Gabriel Ebert. (After a brief break, the show went on.) Bizarrely, the incident occurred at Broadway's Studio 54 theater, the same location where Shia Labeouf drunkenly interrupted a performance of Cabaret last year. Future performances of Thérèse Raquin will see increased security.

Do you ever watch a movie filled with talented people in front of and behind the camera and try to will it to be betterc By simply focusing your thought energy to the screen, you could somehow manipulate what is happening in the film. The pieces of a good movie are there, but they need to be realigned in a slightly different way to rise up from mediocrity. Such was my experience watching Ricki and the Flash. Instead of getting what could have been a thorough drama about an absentee mother being forced back into her children's lives, we get an easy, rather routine crowdpleaser, complete with all problems being healed by dancing to Bruce Springsteen. And it's not like director Jonathan Demme and writer Diablo Cody do not know how to make things tough for their characters. Just look at Cody's criminally underrated script for Young Adult or most of Demme's filmography.
