John Flynn’s Rolling Thunder is a lean, mean revenge thriller that could have only been made in the 1970s. It’s 1973, to be exact, and Major Charles Rane (William Devane) has recently returned to San Antonio after several years in a Viet Cong prison camp. Greeted with a hero’s welcome, Rane has little use for his neighbors’ praise, which he appears to regard (correctly) as an almost poignantly inadequate expression of collective survivor’s guilt.
Rane, along with his friend and fellow veteran Johnny Vohden (Tommy Lee Jones), inhabits the film with a calm pragmatism that might be disconcerting for viewers accustomed to cinema’s more overheated depictions of soldiers coming home. The men don’t appear to resent the friends and family who’re blessedly ignorant of the atrocities they experienced abroad, but the soldiers no longer possess the facilities necessary to uphold basic social conventions such...

If you know your Quentin Tarantino lore, you’ll know that one of his favourite films of all time is John Flynn’s Rolling Thunder. A gritty revenge flick, the 1977 movie was such an influence on Tarantino that he named his short-lived distribution company, Rolling Thunder Pictures, after it. He explains his love of the film in detail in his epic film book, Cinema Speculation. Now, the film is set to get a 4K special edition courtesy of Shout Factory, which comes packed with extras.
If you’ve never seen it, Rolling Thunder is a pretty incredible film. Paul Schrader originally wrote it, but it was heavily rewritten by Heywood Gould (Cocktail). It follows a Nam P.O.W., Major Charles Rane (William Devane), who returns to his home in San Antonio after seven years in Hanoi. Having long come to terms with the fact that he was unlikely ever to return home,...

Back when I was watching "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" weekly, there were few television moments more exciting than when that series would crossover over with its spinoff "Angel." Sadly, once the shows were airing on different networks, the events of Sunnydale barely warranted a mention in Los Angeles, at least until "Buffy" was wrapping up its run, but those episodes were fun when they happened. The CW's Arrowverse later became known for its epic crossovers, which attempted to capture the energy of some of DC Comics' major events.
Across the decades, TV crossovers have ranged from intuitive ("The Flintstones" and "The Jetsons") to truly unexpected ("I Love Lucy" and "Adventures of Superman"). Sure, "Grey's Anatomy" and "Station 19" makes sense, but no one would've anticipated "Bones" and "Family Guy" before it happened. Well, somewhere in between Buffy and Angel's timeless romance and multiple crisis that brought together infinite earths, there...

Barbara Crampton is the queen of indie horror. Gracious and humble as she is, it’s a title she would most likely reject. These are precisely among the qualities that make her an icon: she’s a leader in the industry who makes it a point to bring others up, a gigantic star too nice to ever act like one. She’s the absolute best and deserves to be celebrated not just during #IndieHorrorMonth, but all year long.
From her earliest genre performances in movies like Re-Animator, Chopping Mall, and From Beyond, there was something special about Crampton. She could lend gravity and empathy to even the most outrageous scenario, from the notorious decapitated head scene in Re-Animator to the giant robot battles of Full Moon’s Robot Wars, to which she brings energy and spunk worthy of Marion Ravenswood. She could be a Bdsm-clad mad scientist in From Beyond...

There may be no one in independent horror having more of a moment right now than Brea Grant. As an actor, she starred in one of the best horror movies of 2020, After Midnight, and now The Stylist, already one of the best horror movies of 2021. As a writer, she’s responsible for Lucky (in which she also stars), an ambitious and inventive horror film about female fear that’s now available to stream on Shudder. As writer and director, she’s responsible for 12 Hour Shift, a bloody black comedy starring Angela Bettis as a drug-addicted nurse caught up in an organ harvesting scheme that goes bad; it was one of 2020’s best movies, full stop. The lesson from all of this? Give Brea Grant the keys to everything.
One of the infinite number of things that’s great about the Texas-born actor, writer, and director is her commitment to indie horror.

This years Grimmfest special guest was actress and horror genre icon Barbara Crampton. Renowned for her roles in cult classics such as Re-Animator and From Beyond, Barbara continues to be a major figure in contemporary genre cinema, appearing in such acclaimed recent releases as You’re Next, Beyond the Gates, Sun Choke, We Are Still Here and Replace. We got a chance to sit down with Barbara during the festival to talk things horror, including her role in Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich… Check out part one of the Epic interview below, and check back tomorrow and Thursday for the rest!

Barbara Crampton takes on a devilishly fun role in Dead Night, now in select theaters and on VOD courtesy of Dark Sky Films. Also starring Brea Grant and Aj Bowen, the movie follows a family (parents played by Grant and Bowen) that heads to a remote cabin in Oregon and stumbles across a mysterious woman, played by Barbara Crampton, who is passed out in the snow. Unfortunately for the family, this mysterious woman is anything but helpless and the night quickly turns deadly.
I caught up with Barbara Crampton to talk to her about taking on this fun and different role, reteaming with Brea Grant and Aj Bowen, what she looks for when taking on a new genre role, and she also talks about her upcoming roles in Reborn and the Castle Freak remake:

If you’re a horror fan, then chances are you love The Monster Squad. With that in mind, I think anyone who generally reads a genre website already has a pretty good grasp on just why The Monster Squad has endured for over 30 years, becoming even more popular now than it was three decades ago, and so going into André Gower’s documentary, Wolfman’s Got Nards, I was intrigued to see what he was going to bring to the table for his directorial debut, because I felt like we’d seen a good amount of material out there thus far that has done a solid job of diving into the 1987 horror comedy.
But as Wolfman’s Got Nards weaves through a variety of talking head segments, Q&A footage, and delightful animatics, it becomes clear why Gower is the perfect person to capture all the happenings that coincided with...

If you have been paying any attention to the independent horror scene over the last five years, you are undoubtedly familiar with the work of actor Graham Skipper. From his star-making turn as Dr. Herbert West in the stage version of the Re-Animator musical to his leading man turns in the films of director Joe Begos (Almost Human, The Mind’s Eye) to his role in Jackson Stewart’s Beyond the Gates to seemingly countless supporting roles in everything from Tales of Halloween to Carnage Park to The Devil’s Dolls, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to watch a modern independent horror movie and not have Graham Skipper show up. While I’m always delighted to see him pop up in something I’m watching—I know that for however long he’s on screen, I am in good hands—that kind of ubiquity doesn’t automatically lend itself to talent behind the camera.

Not even a year has passed since The Brooklyn Horror Film Festival emerged as a must-attend genre festival, but year two is already looking to cement such talk. We Got This Covered reported from the trenches last October, where I served as one of the festival’s inaugural judges. The films were strong and the drinks stronger, only increasing excitement for year two. Fast-forward to September 2017 and the countdown clock has just about run out. Something we couldn’t be happier for.
Birth.Movies.Death. was lucky enough to announce Brooklyn Horror’s first wave, including buzzed-about highlights such as Tragedy Girls (one of my favorites from SXSW) and Sequence Break (a Fantasia Fest favorite for me). You’ve also got Housewife, Baskin director Can Evrenol’s sophomore feature, among other notable selections. After nearly 40 years in the business and with 22 officially credited features as a director, Mario Bava made his final feature film with 1977’s Shock, also known to U.S. audiences as Beyond the Door II. Just three years after its release, Bava died of a heart attack. He was 65 years old.
Of all his horror films, Shock feels the least like what we have come to expect of a “Mario Bava movie.” While most of his work has an aesthetic and feel that’s very specific to his sensibilities, Shock seems like it could have been made by any number of the Italian horror directors working at that time. This is probably because, as the story goes, the movie actually was made by another Italian horror director working at the time: Bava’s son Lamberto, who co-wrote the screenplay and is a talented filmmaker in his own right, with titles...

Somewhere between Scanners and Beyond The Gates exists Game Of Death, a kill-em-all deathmatch rooted in Hasbro innocence. Directors Sebastien Landry and Laurence “Baz” Morais inject nihilistic curiosity into a gruesome, head-splitting gore flick that abides by predetermined rules. Questions about existence first, visceral body-mutilating second. Or is it bloody, practical-fx-driven cranium combusting first, existential dread second? There’s a constant tug-of-war at play between bewildered contestants and unlucky bystanders, who are slain in the name of diabolical decisions. Are there any winners in the Game Of Death? That’s for you to decide.

Barbara Crampton has a special place in the hearts of genre fans, particularly those who came of age in the 1980’s video shop era. Making her name in horror classic Re-Animator, she worked steadily throughout that decade and the next in a number of similar cult genre titles.
She has recently enjoyed somewhat of a career renaissance after cropping up in the movies of a new generation of filmmaker who revered her work from those decades before, including the likes of Adam Wingard and Rob Zombie. She also gave a brief yet delicious turn in last year’s Beyond the Gates (a must see for 90’s fantasy-horror aficionados). Her ascent looks set to continue after a recent, meatier role as a deeply unconventional self-help therapist in the dark and enigmatic psychological thriller Sun Choke, which makes it’s streaming debut on Shudder from 9th March.

Make no mistake about it: this was a great year for horror fans. It was so good, in fact, that making a list of “favorites” is almost impossible because there’s just too much I want to talk about. The independent horror scene continues to crank out new classics and minor gems, but even studio horror was good this year: The Conjuring 2, Don’t Breathe, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Lights Out (not my bag, but a lot of people really enjoyed it), The Boy (not a lot of people’s bag, but I really enjoyed it), The Purge: Election Year, and so on. Even better? Pretty much every one of them was successful at the box office. As more and more horror moves are released with the limited release / VOD model, it’s nice to know that good movies still play to big audiences at the multiplex.
And what about horror on TV?...

As years go, 2016 has been a rough one. The movie that’s helping me get through it more than any other right now is Beyond the Gates.
[Warning: This article contains minor spoilers for those who haven’t seen Beyond the Gates.]
This is the year that has claimed a number of brilliant and legendary artists. The year of more devastating terror attacks, of police shootings, and of Brexit. Like it or not, this is also the year that saw the election of a new president who has already been a more polarizing figure than any in recent memory. Reports of hate crimes are on the rise. America is irrevocably divided. This year has sucked, is what I’m saying. But Beyond the Gates gives me hope. Beyond the Gates is the movie the country needs right now.

America is irrevocably divided. This year has sucked, is what I’m saying. But Beyond the Gates gives me hope. Beyond the Gates is the movie the country needs right now.

Who says you need to adapt? As some filmmakers look towards newfangled technology for 21st century chills (Friend Request/Unfriended/The Den), writer/director Jackson Stewart scares up some vintage nostalgia with his debut feature, Beyond The Gates. Screw Facebook and Skype. Remember the good old days when people sat around in social groups, and spooked themselves silly with products you’d only find in dumpsters nowadays?
For you younger readers, VHS cassettes used to play movies on film before digital radio waves made physical copies obsolete – but Stewart’s concept dates even myself (not in my 30s yet, so I was part of the DVD uprising). Apparently games used to exist in VHS form, and you could play along with the characters on screen (like Final Destination 3 tried to do with their “Select A Fate” DVD). Well, what if those games became reality, and immersion meant realistic consequences?...

Walking blind into Beyond The Gates, with little knowledge of the film besides its poster featuring Barbara Crampton’s spooky visage hovering over a cartoon VHS tape, you might expect a self-consciously broad cotton-candy fantasy of a horror movie of the sort perfected by Stuart Gordon in the 1980s. And you will get that, eventually, underscored by a synthesizer soundtrack and lit in lurid shades of neon pink, purple, and blue. In between, though, you’ll also get estranged siblings, an abusive father, and some heavy talk about alcoholism.
Freshman director Jackson Stewart is clearly trying to do something different with the retro-throwback formula, casting genre regulars Chase Williamson (John Dies At The End, The Guest) and Graham Skipper (The Mind’s Eye, Carnage Park) as polar-opposite brothers forced to reunite after their drunk dad’s latest disappearance turns out to be permanent. Arriving in limited theaters and on VOD and digital platforms this Friday is co-writer/director Jackson Stewart’s wicked cool blast from the past Beyond the Gates, which celebrates everything kids who grew up on ’80s and ’90s horror loved the most about our favorite cinematic genre.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with one of the film’s co-stars, Brea Grant, and she chatted about how much it meant to her that Beyond the Gates premiered here in Los Angeles during the summer, her experiences collaborating with Jackson and her co-stars, and how Beyond the Gates was just as much fun to make as it is to watch.
Congrats on the film, Brea. I really had fun with it at the La Film Festival, especially because everybody was super into it that night in the theater. For as much as it's convenient to be able to watch...

An idea for a Supernatural/Smallville crossover wasn't exactly what you might expect.
Supernatural is currently enjoying its 12th season, and there's no end in sight. Smallville, the show that arguably made the CW into the genre show haven it has since become (and perhaps helped make Supernatural possible), took its final bow at the end of its 10th season.
Now imagine, if you will, a crossover between the two shows. It's easy if you try (sorry), especially given how crossover happy the CW is with their current crop of superhero TV shows. And why shouldn't they be? They're absolutely killing it in the ratings. But a Supernatural/Smallville crossover would have come at a time when such exercises weren't necessarily a slam dunk.
Now, keep in mind we're not talking about something as basic as the Winchester boys making a pitstop in Smallville, Kansas and teaming...

With the recent surge of DC TV shows on the CW, the annual crossover events, which typically see heroes & villains from the entire universe join forces to stop a greater evil, have been a hugely successful endeavor for the network. Just last week, this year's four-parter delivered season-best ratings for their entire lineup, which includes Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow. However, according to a new report, it sounds like there may have been a very special crossover in the works long before anyone thought four superhero shows could ever exist on just one network - but, it wouldn't have been multiple superheroes meeting up, instead it would've seen two of The CW's biggest hits ever - Smallville & Supernatural - come together in an episode for the ages. During EW Radio's weekly Entertainment Weirdly show, former Supernatural production assistant Jackson Stewart (Beyond the Gates) called in and shared...

A Vcr board game threatens to steal your soul in a retro-style faux commercial that serves as an atmospheric promo video for Jackson Stewart's Beyond the Gates, co-starring Barbara Crampton, and we also have a look at Doug Kovacs' tarot card artwork for the film.
Synopsis: "A retro-cool blast from the day-glo 1980s past, Beyond the Gates zaps viewers back to a time when VHS ruled, video stores were meccas for horror fans, and shocks came with a healthy dose of schlock. In the wake of their father’s mysterious disappearance, two estranged brothers—responsible Gordon (Graham Skipper of Almost Human) and reckless John (Chase Williamson of John Dies At The End)—reunite to sift through the contents of his stubbornly anachronistic VHS rental store. Among the inventory, they discover an interactive Vcr board game, which their father viewed just before he vanished. Intrigued, the boys pop in the tape,...

Director Jackson Stewart’s Beyond The Gates is a throwback to ‘80s and ‘90s horror, and it’s all based around an especially spooky VHS board game that two brothers find in the back of their father’s video rental store. We saw a proper trailer for the film earlier this month, and now Nerdist has posted a retro-style ad for the terrifying board game itself. The clip starts off innocently enough, with Barbara Crampton’s mysterious host introducing a group of girls to the Beyond The Gates board game, but things quickly take an unfortunate turn when the VHS tape somehow steals the girls’ souls. The whole VHS-game fad burned out pretty quick in the real world, and we can’t help but wonder if the genre’s penchant for stealing souls like that was a factor in the public’s quickly fading interest.

You've got to watch this trailer for a fun looking throwback horror thriller called Beyond the Gates. I wasn't really sure what to make of this film when I first started watching the trailer, and then it got to a point where the main characters start playing a VHS-type board game in which they have to play to save their missing father's soul. That's the concept that grabbed my attention, and I love the whole VHS throwback vibe of it. It looks like it will be an entertaining flick! You can read Ben's review of it here. This is the synopsis:
The movie stars Graham Skipper (Almost Human) and Chase Williamson (John Dies at the End) as "two estranged brothers who reunite to sift through the contents of their missing dad’s VHS rental store. Among the inventory, they discover an interactive Vcr board game, which their father viewed just before he vanished.

While some horror films, like Ti West’s House Of The Devil, pay homage to past eras of cinematic scares by taking up the mantle of an earlier visual style, others comment on the past while remaining rooted in the modern world. Beyond The Gates, a clever and appealing indie horror film from director Jackson Stewart, straddles the gap between those two tactics, reveling in a nostalgic look back at a bygone time and technology, while also incorporating some of the original visual and narrative tricks of the time. The story of two brothers who return home to take care of their father’s affairs months after his disappearance, the film follows the estranged siblings as they unearth an old VHS board game while sifting through the contents of their dad’s video rental store. The game turns out to be far more menacing than it would seem, and soon...

"I suggest you play the game." IFC Midnight has debuted a trailer for the indie horror titled Beyond the Gates, a throwback to VHS and specifically Vcr games, where you play a board game that comes with a VHS tape. Directed by Jackson Stewart, the film is about two brothers who come across an old VHS board game while cleaning out their missing dad's video rental store. They decided to play it one last time and get sucked into a game they can't escape. Starring Graham Skipper, Chase Williamson, Brea Grant, and real life horror actress Barbara Crampton as the host of the VHS game. I caught this film at a festival a few months ago and enjoyed it, saying it's "goofy, rather harmless, and super low-budget" but fun. Pop it in. Here's the new trailer (+ original poster) for Jackson Stewart's Beyond the Gates, originally on EW.com: Two...
