Paramount is polishing its crystal ball today and looking ahead at some of the films from the studio in the next few years. At least, that’s how it feels when Paramount earnings day comes along. The studio announced a 0.6% increase in stock today, with various release date announcements to whet investor’s whistles. Among the titles mentioned during today’s report, Paramount put dates on projects like Liam Neeson’s Naked Gun reboot, a sequel to 2023’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and more.
The Naked Gun reboot pratfalls into theaters on July 18, 2025, with Liam Neeson starring in the comedic role made famous by the late Leslie Neilsen. Akiva Schaffer directs, and executive produces the Naked Gun reboot, with Dan Gregor and Doug Man writing the script draft alongside Schaffer. One of the reasons this is exciting is that the trio partnered for the way-better-than-anticipated Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers film.

Exclusive: As the FilmNation Entertainment team gathered in Santa Monica this week for the American Film Market, some reflection is in order. It has been 15 years since Glen Basner started the venture. Despite the hardships facing everyone at AFM with strikes and uncertainty, what a different a decade and a half makes. The launch happened in 2008, not the most fortuitous time to launch an indie film finance and production company with global ambitions.
“Back then, Summit and Mandate were the two top companies in the space,” Basner recalled when assessing the opportunity to launch a company back then. “Mandate was sold to Lionsgate and became a U.S. distributor, and Summit started their own U.S. distribution company. There was a hole in the marketplace we thought we could fill, and become that leading American international sales agent for feature films that had no connection to the U.S. distribution world.

Actor Jack Quaid is set to star in ‘Novocaine’, a Lars Jacobson-scripted action thriller that will be directed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen. The project will be introduced at the upcoming American Film Market, with FilmNation Entertainment handling global sales, reports Deadline.
Quaid is coming off ‘Scream’ and ‘Oppenheimer’. In ‘Novocaine’, he plays Nathan Caine. He was born with the rare disorder Cipa (Congenital Insensitivity to Pain), which means he does not feel physical pain.
As per Deadline, he grew up a sheltered child, learning to blend his food so he would not unwittingly chew off his own tongue, and he learned to wear a timer to remind himself when to go to the bathroom.
But when his bank is robbed and his new love taken hostage, his affliction becomes his greatest strength as he sets out to rescue her. The protagonist feels like he’s got a...

The new horror movie Significant Other asks the question, “Is camping in the vast wilderness truly scary?” Despite Harry (Jake Lacy) trying to assure his anxious girlfriend (Maika Monroe) that everything’s okay, the actual answer to that question is of course, yes…
It has been an exciting year for horror fans. Besides the return of several beloved franchises, original movies like the recent Smile, Barbarian, and notably, gore fest Terrifier 2 are doing bigger numbers. Maika Monroe and Jake Lacy take on quite the terrifying topic in Robert Olsen and Dan Berk’s latest sci-fi thriller: marriage. In Significant Other, streaming now exclusively on Paramount+, Monroe and Lacy play Ruth and Harry, a couple on a backpacking trip in the Pacific Northwest that takes a sinister turn. Clocking in at just under 90 minutes, Significant Other proves you don’t need three hours to play out a detailed plot. With beloved films like It Follows under her belt, Monroe has made the horror/thriller genres her bread and butter. And Lacy returns to his “nice guy” persona for most of the flick, but there is, of course, a twist. The stars and writers stopped by TV Insider’s New York Comic-Con 2022 suite to discuss the themes explored in the movie, from marriage being someone’s worst nightmare to the things women are expected to do for their male partners.

Almost exactly one year ago today, it was announced that genre regular Maika Monroe would be re-teaming with Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, the writing / directing duo that was behind the 2019 film Villains (watch it Here), for a sci-fi thriller called Significant Other. Jake Lacy is taking the leap into marriage. No, really: The trailer for Paramount+ horror film “Significant Other” shows the “White Lotus” alum plunging headfirst off a cliff to his death mere moments after proposing to his girlfriend. Anything to escape the cage of marriage, it seems.
“Significant Other” stars Lacy as Harry, an unsuspecting partner who is head over heels (literally) for fiancée Ruth, played by “It Follows” actress Maika Monroe. The couple go on a remote backpacking trip through the Pacific Northwest, where Ruth seems to tap into the more supernatural elements of the forest. As Ruth imagines Harry plunging to his gruesome death, the couple become more and more paranoid that they may not be alone. “Significant Other” premieres October 7.
The R-rated film also stars Teal Sherer and Loudon McCleery. “Significant Other” is directed and co-written by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, the filmmaking duo behind “Body” and “Villains.

Maika Monroe admittedly had concerns about Watcher’s similarities to her 2014 genre classic, It Follows, but as soon as she met filmmaker Chloe Okuno, those doubts immediately evaporated.
In Okuno’s slow-burn thriller from IFC Midnight, Monroe plays a former actor named Julia who moves to Romania with her husband, Francis (Karl Glusman), and while he’s off at work, she becomes convinced that she’s being watched by someone in a neighboring building. Julia’s fears mostly fall on deaf ears, eventually highlighting how terrifying gaslighting can be, especially when compounded by a communication gap. Monroe instantly related to Julia since she moved to the Dominican Republic when she was 18 in order to pursue a professional kiteboarding career, understanding what it’s like to be a stranger in a strange land.

I’ve used Rakuten TV a few times now, and the service is on-point. Slick, easy to use and crystal clear in sound and picture, it’s a very cool service for the rental of movies. Available to use across various places, from Smart TV’s, Xbox One, PC’s, Chromecast and various other places, it’s well worth a shot if you’re yet to use it.

Bringing a tidal wave of horror onto the shores of South Florida, the fifth annual Popcorn Frights Film Festival sliced its way into Savor Cinema back in August for nine days of eclectic scares and insightful conversations. Co-founded by Marc Ferman and Igor Shteyrenberg, this year’s Popcorn Frights featured more than 70 films (both feature-length and short form) from around the globe, including 10 world premieres of diverse stories ranging from a comic book serial killer to a dog-sized spider and new twists on Frankenstein. This year’s Popcorn Frights proved that horror has found a loving, long-term home in South Florida, and Daily Dead was lucky enough to attend the festival (and serve on its jury). With many of the festival’s films now being released in theaters and on VOD, we thought this would be a good time to look back at the week of killer screenings that left...

Exclusive: Deadline has learned that Village Roadshow Pictures has optioned New York Times-bestselling author Charles Pellegrino’s environmental horror novel Dust, which Dan Berk and Robert Olsen will adapt for the screen.
Published near the turn of the millennium in 1998, Dust is strangely prescient about the disastrous, inevitable effects of human progress on Earth’s ecosystem. The story follows maverick paleobiologist Richard Sinclair, who is one of the first to suspect the truth: that a series of random episodes are symptoms of a chain reaction triggered by a die-off of the world’s insects. As the old-world order collapses, Sinclair and a small group of scientists embark on a race against time.
Pellegrino is a writer and a scientist working in paleobiology and astronomy, a designer for projects including rockets and nuclear devices (non-military propulsion systems), composite construction materials and magnetically levitated transportation systems. After sailing with Robert Ballard...

All was fairly quiet on the specialty box office front this week, with the debut of just a handful of films. The most notable of the bunch was Matt Tyrnauer’s riveting Where’s My Roy Cohn? Other openers this weekend included a Loro, as well as Gunpowder & Sky’s horror-comedy Villains, starring It Chapter Two‘s Bill Skarsgård and Kyra Sedgwick, which had openings that were decent, but nothing earth-shattering.
Sony Pictures Classics feature documentary Where’s My Roy Cohn? opened exclusively in New York and Los Angeles on four screens, and is estimated to rake in $42,364. Deadline learned that it performed better in New York than it did in Los Angeles — which is probably because the ruthless Donald Trump mentor was more of a New York figure. Nonetheless, Spc hopes to add to its box office stack once Roy Cohn continues to expand next week.

‘Villains’ Film Review: Small-Time Crooks Meet Very Bad People in Charmingly Eccentric Horror Comedy
Dan Berk and Robert Olsen’s “Villains” takes place in a universe where criminals, from bargain-basement gas-station stickup artists to terrifyingly violent serial killers, are all utterly delightful. Four such ne’er-do-wells finds themselves in the same house in “Villains.” Violence breaks out, mind games are played, and it’s all so adorably eccentric that you don’t ever want it to stop.
Bill Skarsgård (“It Chapter Two”) and Maika Monroe (“It Follows”) co-star as Mickey and Jules, two young thieves who can barely rob a liquor store. Opening the cash register is, to these kids, a task on par with the Riddle of the Sphinx. And yet, thanks to the power of teamwork, they succeed in their Herculean task of opening that drawer. There is nothing they can’t accomplish when they work together. Maybe. If it’s easy enough.
Mickey and Jules are celebrating their extreme cleverness when,...

Maika Monroe deserves to be a massive star. She first came on to my, and many folks’, radar with her tremendous turn in It Follows. More than just a scream queen in the making, Monroe had an X factor about her that suggested greatness. She again shows that in the new comedic thriller Villains, which teams her up with three other massively entertaining performances to craft a wholly surprising delight. Opening this week, the film easily could have been little more than a knock off of Quentin Tarantino’s work, but instead, it finds its own quirky wavelengths and delights from start to finish. The movie is a mixture of comedy, drama, horror, and thriller, all told with the allure of a crime caper. Jules (Monroe) and Mickey (Bill Skarsgård) are a couple hoping to rob their way to a new life in Florida. After holding up a gas station,...

This film had its debut at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, with another stop at Cinepocalypse. Villains focuses on Bonnie and Clyde pairing, who have just ripped off a gas station. However, they hole up in a strange home, in which lives an even stranger family. In film, never go in the basement. Now, a trailer has been released for the film - ahead of this title's wide release in theatres. The official synopsis mentions the pair fleeing for Florida. Unfortunately for Mickey (Bill Skarsgård) and Jules (Maika Monroe), their car breaks down and they are forced to break into a nearby home. Inside, they find a "dark secret" and two homeowners, whose hospitality is not very friendly. Both Berk and Olsen have spoken about the film, after the SXSW debut.
