Apple TV+ has revealed the first teaser-trailer for “Presumed Innocent” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, from Emmy-winning creator David E. Kelley.
Gyllenhaal narrates the trailer as Rusty Sabich, a man seemingly consumed by his love for a woman named Carolyn (Renate Reinsve). “She woke something up inside me,” he says as the footage cuts between his time with her and images of cars and courtrooms and arguments — clearly invoking a darker twist in this alleged romance. Carolyn, it turns out, has been murdered and, given their history, Rusty is the prime suspect.
What the trailer leaves out is extra juicy: Rusty and Carolyn were coworkers and prosecutors, and the suspected crime sends waves through the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney’s office as they mourn a colleague, reel from an affair, and pursue a murder investigation — to say nothing of how it affects Rusty’s marriage and home life.
The rest of the cast includes Ruth Negga,...

Miley Cyrus revealed on her “Used to Be Young” TikTok video series that she was filming a traumatic scene for “Black Mirror” in South Africa at the same time the Woolsey Fire ripped through Malibu, Calif. and burned her home to the ground. The two incidents happening in tandem with each other resulted in anxiety attacks years later, which kicked in every time Cyrus had to perform. “It’s about two characters who are reaching for something,” reveals composer Nathan Barr about the limited series “A Very British Scandal.” The three-episode drama recounts the marriage and bitter divorce between Ian and Margaret Campbell, the Duke and Duchess of Argyll, played by Paul Bettany and Claire Foy. Barr’s score has been nominated for an Emmy, his fifth career nomination. He previously won for composing the main title music of the Netflix limited series “Hollywood.” Check out our exclusive video interview with Barr above.
The composer’s inspiration came from his belief that both Ian and Margaret were looking for things that were completely separate from any kind of love. For Ian, it was the desire for Margaret’s money, while Margaret was attracted to the idea of being the wife of a duke. As a reminder, last year’s winner was “The Queen’s Gambit” (Scott Frank), while the other nominees were “Hamilton” (Thomas Kail), “Mare of Easttown” (Craig Zobel), “Wandavision” (Matt Shakman), “The Underground Railroad” (Barry Jenkins) and two episodes of “I May Destroy You” (Sam Miller for “Eyes Eyes Eyes Eyes” and Miller and Michaela Coel for “Ego Death”).
For six of the last eight years, the Best Limited/Movie Directing category has rewarded directors who helmed the entirety of their limited series. That could work in favor of Mike White, who directed all six episodes of “The White Lotus,” which should have enough overall support to be competitive in the series category. Miniseries that also only submitted their sole director for the whole series, per the Emmy ruling, include “Gaslit” for Matt Ross,...

Long before Britney Spears or Pamela Anderson, there was Margaret Whigham, the 1930s British socialite more famously known as the Duchess of Argyll. The only child in a wealthy Scottish family, Margaret’s beauty, fashion sense and string of high-profile romances made her constant tabloid fodder. But it was her extremely public 1963 divorce from Ian Campbell, the Duke of Argyll, that forever tainted her name with the general public.
That “divorce of the century” serves as the story at the heart of Prime Video’s three-part limited project, “A Very British Scandal.” The drama — and what it says about the double standards to which women in the public eye are held — feels eerily timely in the wake of our recent re-examination of how figures like Spears and Anderson have been treated in the media.
The story never fails to drive that message home, but in end that may also be its biggest flaw.

Paul Bettany and Claire Foy are sparring as the Duke and Duchess of Argyll in the first trailer for Prime Video’s “A Very British Scandal.”
The drama series, which hails from the creators of “A Very English Scandal,” follows the couple’s divorce in the 1960s, which proved to be one of the most notorious, extraordinary, and brutal legal cases of the 20th century.
Foy plays Margaret, the Duchess of Argyll, who was famed for her beauty and charisma before the Duke (Bettany) exposed her to the press with accusations of forgery, theft, violence, drug-taking, secret recording, bribery, and an explicit Polaroid picture.
The trailer begins with a rather tense interaction between the two in which Bettany’s Duke greets his Duchess with “Hello, Satan.”

Chloë Grace Moretz and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are set to star together in “White Night,” a psychological thriller inspired by the true story of the mass murder-suicide in the Jonestown cult in 1978.
Anne Sewitsky (“A Very British Scandal”) is directing the film that will star Gordon-Levitt as Jim Jones, the Christian socialist preacher, self-proclaimed God and cult leader, and Moretz as Deborah Layton, a woman who rose through the ranks of the cult and tried to expose Jones before it was too late.
“White Night” is based on Layton’s memoir “Seductive Poison,” and it details how on November 18, 1978, more than 900 people died in a mass murder-suicide, one of the largest on record. The massacre occurred at the Jonestown settlement that Jones established in Guyana in 1974, an extension of his San Francisco-based cult.

Claire Foy just can’t get enough of period dramas about British aristocracy — and neither can audiences. It’s a match made in heaven, unlike the troubled marriage at the heart of her new series “A Very British Scandal.” Hailing from BBC One and Amazon, the provocative period drama sees “The Crown” star playing Margaret Campbell, Duchess of Argyll, opposite “WandaVision” star Paul Bettany as Ian Campbell, 11th Duke of Argyll. From the looks of this first trailer, sparks fly when the two seasoned actors go head to head as a couple going through an acrimonious divorce. Of course, this being the 1960s, the Duchess ends up paying a high price for her sexual freedom.
The three-part series tells the story of the couple’s highly publicized 1963 divorce proceedings. Known for her charisma, beauty, and style, Margaret, Duchess of Argyll, dominated newspapers as the divorce exposed accusations of forgery, theft,...

Seemingly gone are the days of productions like “Tales From the Crypt” which always winked at the camera while sating audiences’ thirst for blood. While that sentiment remains in the likes of Shudder’s “Creepshow,” most anthologies in that vein blend in social commentary, turning the horror inward to leave us with the message, more often than not, that the true monsters are within us.
It’s trite, it’s simplistic, and it’s at the center of Hulu’s new anthology series “Monsterland.” Based on Nathan Ballingrud’s novel “North American Lake Monsters: Stories,” “Monsterland” tells eight different stories about people dealing with loss, regret, guilt, and loneliness with a slight tinge of actual monsters thrown in. Those seeking more overt scares, a la “Channel Zero,” the aforementioned “Creepshow” or even AMC’s “The Terror...

Maipo Film, the leading Norwegian production banner behind “The Crossing” and “State of Happiness,” has acquired Oslo-based Friland Production, whose credits include the Nikolaj Coster-Waldau starrer “Headhunters.”
Following Maipo’s acquisition, Christian Fredrik Martin, Friland’s owner and producer, is joining Maipo as a producer.
Besides “Headhunters,” Friland’s track record also comprises Netflix’s romantic drama “Battle,” about a dance competition, and “Congo Murder,” the true story of the two Norwegians who were imprisoned in Eastern Congo in 2009.
“Friland is a good fit for Maipo; we are complementary,” said producer Synnøve Hørsdal, the CEO of Maipo Film. “And thanks to this acquisition we are enlisting Christian Fredrik Martin, a seasoned producer with a vast network and a track record of internationally-driven movies.”
The deal with Friland marks Maipo’s first company acquisition since launching 20 years ago. Hørsdal said the acquisition will allow the company to increase its production volume...

Castle Rock season 2 delivers its best episode yet with a bold exploration of Annie Wilkes' past. Our review of "The Laughing Place"...

This Castle Rock review contains spoilers.
Castle Rock Season 2 Episode 5
A year ago, I would have cringed at the thought of an Annie Wilkes origin story. Surely, a character as iconic as Stephen King's psychotic fiction fan needs no prologue in 2019. A ham-handed "Misery: The Beginning" Hollywood movie would almost certainly defile the character worse than when Paul Sheldon decided to kill off his most famous heroine. Yet, here is Castle Rock to prove me completely wrong. "The Laughing Place" is not only an Annie Wilkes origin story but one of those special King-inspired stories we'll be talking about for a long time.
Castle Rock has seriously met its potential in season 2, with stories that not only pay homage to the master of...

Sundance 2019: ‘Sonja: The White Swan’Review by Peter BelsitoSonja Henie (8 April 1912–12 October 1969) was a Norwegian figure skater and film star.
She was a three-time Olympic Champion(1928, 1932, 1936) in Ladies’ Singles, a ten-time World Champion (1927–1936) and a six-time European Champion (1931–1936). Henie won more Olympic and World titles than any other ladies’ figure skater.
At the height of her acting career, Sonja Henie was one of the highest-paid stars in Hollywood and starred in a series of box-office hits, including Thin Ice (1937), My Lucky Star (1938), Second Fiddle (1939) and Sun Valley Serenade (1941)
When the Norwegian figure skater arrived in Hollywood, she was a talent the industry had never seen before, or since — a three-time Olympic ladies’ singles champion (a record she continues to hold) whose chipper, if chilly romantic comedy hits kept Twentieth Century-Fox solvent in the build-up to World War II, in part because she phoned up her pal Joseph...

Directed by Anne Sewitsky and starring Ine Marie Wilmann, the film tells the story of a unique star within a standard structure. As a child in Norway, young Sonja learns how to skate with her brother. Quickly we jump into adulthood, our lead now a European sensation, ice skating to packed venues.
