Sony Pictures announced today that the next sequel in the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise is set for a theatrical release on July 18, 2025.
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) has been tapped to direct the sequel from a screenplay she co-wrote with Sam Lansky following the initial script by Leah McKendrick. It’s been said that original cast members Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. have been in talks to reprise their roles, but nothing has been officially confirmed yet. Hewitt said earlier this year that she’d be down to return for the sequel but hasn’t seen a script yet.
Loosely based on the 1973 novel by Lois Duncan, the first I Know What You Did Last Summer movie was scripted by Scream writer Kevin Williamson and directed by Jim Gillespie. It revolved around four young friends who are stalked by a hook-wielding killer one year...

Twenty-seven years after the release of the the slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer (watch it Here) and twenty-six years after the follow-up I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (watch that one Here), Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. might be reprising the roles of Julie James and Ray Bronson in a new sequel… but we still don’t know for sure. This new sequel was announced thirteen months ago, and even though it was said at the time that Hewitt and Prinze were in talks to return, Prinze later said that no one had been in contact with him about it yet. Hewitt said she would 100% be on board if an offer came her way – and even though she recently told Entertainment Tonight she couldn’t confirm but wouldn’t deny that she’d be back for the new sequel, she also revealed that...

Thirteen months have already gone by since it was announced that the 1997 slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer (watch it Here) was getting a new sequel with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) set to direct from a screenplay by Leah McKendrick (M.F.A.) and Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. in talks to reprise the roles of Julie James and Ray Bronson. We haven’t heard much about the project since then, except when Prinze said he hadn’t actually gotten an offer yet and Hewitt said she would gladly come back for another sequel. There’s no word on when or if this sequel will be going into production – but during a recent interview with Collider, McKendrick did talk about making her pitch, collaborating with Robinson, and her reason for pursuing the job.

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Writer Teases Upcoming Sequel; A Slasher for the Social Media Age?
As we learned last year, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) is on board to direct the next installment in the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise for Sony, with Leah McKendrick (M.F.A.) on board to write the screenplay. We don’t yet know if the original cast will be back, but the film had been originally announced as a legacy sequel of sorts.
Speaking with Collider this week, writer Leah McKendrick remained pretty tight lipped about her I Know What You Did Last Summer plans, but she did provide some low-key insights.
McKendrick told the outlet, “…no spoilers, but I will say that I think if you’re an Og fan like me and you, I think you’re gonna be happy. I think you’re gonna get it.”
She also teased a social media aspect to the upcoming sequel, something that of course wasn’t present in the original movies because,...

Somehow, in the midst of the “first quarter” of the year’s cinematic doldrums and discards a nice surprise “pops’ up to jolt you awake, or at the least engage your senses. And it’s even rarer that it’s from a relative newcomer or an artist that’s not yet “on the radar”. That changes now. Like many creatives, she’s far from an “overnight star”, as her IMDb lists more than a dozen or so acting credits. And then there are several listings of “behind the camera” work, in features and shorts on the big screen and small. Now, with this release she’s a true “triple threat” as she makes her feature directing debut while emoting in nearly every scene. Film fans, here to inject much-needed energy and a bit of snark into the “rom-com” is Leah McKendrick in Scrambled.

Going by the trailer, there’s a bit of a mystery in the book and movie surrounding the identity of the film’s titular secret agent, but Vaughn has another stacked cast, including Bryce Dallas Howard as “Conway” with Henry Cavill playing “Argylle,” and the likes of Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Samuel L. It seems like only yesterday that we were all ragging on the millennial cohort for youthful foibles like excess avocado consumption and crushing student debt accrual. But time, with its trademark humorlessness, has marched on and suddenly, the self-same kids who coined “adulting” to hashtag their Insta stories about that time they put up a shelf, are discovering how much less fun it is to be adult-ed — ready or not.
In the enjoyably salty-till-it-gets-too-sweet “Scrambled,” Nellie is definitely in the “not” category, but that doesn’t matter to her ovaries. At 34, they’re starting to slow down their egg production, forcing hard-partying, sexually adventurous Nellie, whose journey to date has been an exercise in life-decision-making avoidance, to consider her options. When exactly should you let go of the child inside you, in order to embrace the possibility of having a child inside you?

"What if I screw this up? I don't even know if I want kids!" Lionsgate has unveiled the trailer for another new sex comedy called Scrambled, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Leah McKendrick. Thirty-something Nellie Robinson is your quintessential eternal bridesmaid. When a doctor visit reveals her fertility may be in jeopardy, she stares down the barrel of a future without options and decides to freeze her eggs. The arduous (and pricey) process sends her on a journey of self-examination, confronting past lovers, dreams and regrets, and ultimately bringing her face to face with the one she’s meant to be with forever: Herself. Starring Leah McKendrick as Nellie, Ego Nwodim, Andrew Santino, Adam Rodriguez, Laura Cerón, and Clancy Brown. This received mostly positive reviews at the fest, praising the structure: "the film has quick quips, good timing, and tight pacing." Looks like it is honest & fun with plenty of spunk.

It was reported back in February that both Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. were “in talks” to return for an I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel from Sony Pictures, but Freddie Prinze Jr. called that report into question just one month later. According to the actor, he hadn’t actually been offered anything at all – at the time, at least.
So what’s going on here? Is Sony actually even developing a sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer? And if so, are Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt even interested?

Even though there's been a significant rise in raunchy comedies that put female characters in the driver's seat, thanks in part to the success of movies like "Bridesmaids" and "Trainwreck," most of them are rom-coms that firmly rely on the blend of both romance and R-rated comedy. However, "Scrambled," from writer-director Leah McKendrick, stands out among the crowd as a movie that isn't nearly concerned with finding true love. Instead, the film focuses on thirtysomething Nellie (played by McKendrick) as she begins to explore the peaks and valleys of female fertility.
Nellie is swimming in a sea of weddings, engagement parties, baby showers, and friends who are leaving their younger transgressions behind in favor of a future with a family. While attending her friend Sheila's (Ego Nwodim) nuptials, where Sheila reveals that she's also pregnant, Nellie takes some Molly and reconnects with her old friend Monroe (June Diane Raphael), the...

Freddie Prinze Jr. marked the launch of his new horror movie podcast “That Was Pretty Scary” by talking to TooFab about one of his own seminal horror films, the 1997 teen slasher classic “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” Prinze Jr., who co-hosts the podcast with Jon Lee Brody, said making the movie was a miserable experience because of director Jim Gillespie, who the actor said was “such an asshole” to him on set. Alleged tension between the two started because Gillespie wanted to cast Jeremy Sisto in the role of Ray Bronson but the studio and screenwriter Kevin Williamson wanted Prinze Jr. instead.
“I’ll give the man this, I think his name is Jim, he made no bones about it,” Prinze Jr. said of the director. “There was no passive aggressiveness — which I hate — he was very direct in the fact that, ‘I don’t want you in this movie.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that the trampy heroine of any modern female-slanted rom-com must make Bridget Jones look like Grace Kelly by comparison. And while Leah McKendrick’s feature debut offers more caustic com than rom, it leans hard into the legacy of Helen Fielding’s famously underachieving singleton. Since then, we’ve had Paul Feig’s Bridesmaids and Sophie Hyde’s Animals, and Scrambled certainly belongs in that more riotous subgenre of movies about women behaving badly.
McKendrick takes a different tack to most, though, and its subject matter — how do you prepare for motherhood when you’re not yet fit to be a mother? — is a tough sell, and often feels like raw material for an incredibly personal stand-up set from a comedian that likes to shock with overshare.

Lena Dunham had “Girls.” Amy Schumer had “Trainwreck.” And now, Leah McKendrick has “Scrambled.” The filmmaker and star behind the dramedy “Scrambled” shines in this coming-of-age fertility saga, which chronicles an aimless 34-year-old who decides to freeze her eggs amid the onslaught of weddings, bridal showers, and babies her peers are suddenly throwing.
The film follows Los Angeles native Nellie (McKendrick), whose best friend Sheila (“Saturday Night Live” standout Ego Nwodim) is getting married. Gone are their days of doing coke together and partying without consequence: Sheila is pregnant and tying the knot, while Nellie gets stuck rolling on ecstasy by herself at the reception.
That’s where she crosses paths with her friend group idol Monroe (June Diane Raphael) who...

As Mindy Meeks-Martin wisely observed in last year’s Scream, “You can't just reboot a franchise from scratch anymore – the fans won't stand for it!” And since the Child’s Play and Black Christmas reboots haven’t fared nearly as well as ‘legacyquels’ like Scream and David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy, you’ll see she’s got a point. Clearly Sony agrees too, as it’s now planning to resurrect its own '90s slasher franchise I Know What You Did Last Summer with the original cast in tow.
According to Deadline, Sony Pictures has tapped Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, director of last year’s sharp contemporary high school satire Do Revenge, to helm the sequel. Even more exciting is the news that Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are in talks to reprise their roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson, who were last seen as newlyweds at the...

I know what we're doing next summer – or at least, sometime soon. The teen slasher "I Know What You Did Last Summer" is reportedly the next big horror saga to get the legacy sequel treatment, according to Deadline, and we might even be able to catch some of the original film's characters back in action.
The outlet reports that "Do Revenge" director and co-writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is on board to direct the sequel for Sony, with both Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt in talks to reprise their roles from the 1997 film. This is far from the first time the story of a group of guilty teens being haunted by a hook-handed man has been revisited: the original was followed up by two sequels, and a now-canceled Prime Video series re-adapted the 1973 Lois Duncan novel in 2021.

Turns out I still know what you did 25 summers ago. A sequel to the ’90s slasher film “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is in development at Sony Pictures, as originally reported by Deadline.
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, best known for last year’s Netflix teen film “Do Revenge,” is reportedly in talks to direct the slasher sequel. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., who starred in the original 1997 film, are both in talks to return for the sequel. Deadline further reports that Leah McKendrick will write the script, while original film producer Neal H. Moritz is in talks to return.
An individual with knowledge told IndieWire that the project is in very early development, and deals with talent have yet to close for the film.

Paramount+ is hoping its latest series will be the one that you want. Like greased lightnin’ (go greased lightnin’), the “Grease” prequel series “Rise of the Pink Ladies” is racing to the streamer on April 6, in time for you to binge it over those summer nights eventually. Paramount+ announced the news from their January 9 presentation for the Television Critic’s Association Winter press tour and, because there are worse things they could do, released a short teaser for the teen musical series to accompany it.
The series is a prequel to “Grease,” the 1978 film itself adapted from the 1971 stage musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. Directed by Randal Kleiser, the movie was led by John Travolta and the late Olivia Newton-John as star-crossed greaser Danny Zuko and good girl Sandy Olsson, but the film became a cultural sensation (raking in 366.2 million at the global box office) thanks in part to the memorable supporting cast,...

Paramount’s plan to tell you more, tell you more about the crucial amorous 1950s-set teen backstory to its iconic 1978 musical, Grease, appears to be coming to fruition. A surging indie talent for whom the film will serve as a potential mainstream breakthrough, Haley will work off a script by Leah McKendrick, a surging talent poised to break out in her own right. "I made a 'sex to-do list.'" Vertical Entertainment has unveiled the official trailer for a spunky sex comedy titled A Nice Girl Like You, adapted from the book titled "Pornology" by Ayn Carrillo. This stars Lucy Hale as a Harvard grad who is dumped by her boyfriend for being too "pornophobic." The film follows her hilarious explorations facing her sexual fears after she decides to learn about all she hasn't yet experienced. Also stars Mindy Cohn, Leonidas Gulaptis, Adhir Kalyan, Stephen Friedrich, Skye P. Marshall, Leah McKendrick, Jina Panebianco, Nadia Quinn, and Jackie Cruz. The 15th annual Black List survey was revealed Monday December 16, and it includes 66 un-produced screenplays from up-and-coming literary talent. Results were pooled from a survey of more than 250 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to 10 favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2019 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year. This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the Black List.
Since 2005, more than a third of the screenplays included in the annual Black List surveys have become produced films, and often to notoriety — such as “Argo,” “American Hustle,” “Juno,” “The King’s Speech,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Spotlight,” “The Revenants,” “The Descendants,” and “Hell or High Water.” Melina Matsoukas’s 2019 film “Queen & Slim,” written by Lena Waithe with a story co-authored by James Frey, was featured on the 2018 Black List.
