The subgenre of "Christmas movies" has been a curious one of late. While new movies set during the holiday season or others explicitly concerning it are released every year (especially holiday horror), it feels like we haven't gotten a new classic, gotta-watch-this-every-year holiday movie in a while. That's because, in all honesty, most classics aren't made, they're grown; it takes a few years for most films to prove their durability, and some that are overlooked upon their initial release get rediscovered and slowly morph into seasonal staples.
Filmmaker Michael Dougherty is intimately familiar with this process, as it's happened to him at least twice with two movies about two different holidays. His anthology of Halloween hijinks, 2007's "Trick 'r Treat," barely got a theatrical release before word of mouth allowed it to gain a cult reputation strong enough that a sequel has been rumored for years, and may actually happen.

Fans have been waiting 14 years for director Michael Dougherty to get around to making a sequel to his Halloween-themed horror anthology Trick ‘r Treat, but Dougherty has stayed busy as the years have gone by, making the Christmas-themed horror film Krampus, directing Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and contributing to the scripts for X-Men: Apocalypse, Godzilla vs. Kong, and the upcoming Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Recently, there have been indications that a Trick ‘r Treat 2 might finally be moving forward. Dougherty has even said the screenplay has been written. But while he pushes that sequel toward production, he has revealed to Collider that he has an idea for Krampus 2 as well.
Dougherty told them, “We have an idea for a sequel on that one, too. It doesn’t necessarily center around a family as much as it might be about a group of strangers who are trapped somewhere.

“Our job is to fight for the show,” reveals executive producer Susan Downey on the goal for any good producer on series like their period drama “Perry Mason” and fantasy “Sweet Tooth.” For our recent webchat alongside her Team Downey partner Amanda Burrell, she adds, “We’re trying to be critical and trying to make sure we’re keeping the true north and supporting the vision of our showrunners and our filmmakers, and if you’re taking risks along the way and you’re doing things that you know make you a little bit nervous, then that’s certainly what we strive for. But you really hope that they work. So, it is nice to finally get Season 2 of both shows out into the world and see that people have been responding favorably.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

The Last of Us struck a nerve with its story of a grizzled cynic shepherding a youngster across a treacherous post-apocalyptic America. But Sweet Tooth got there first, even if it didn’t create as much of a fuss. The dark Netflix YA drama premiered in June 2021, when the Covid pandemic was still very much top of mind. In telling the story of a little boy with deer antlers and his massive, taciturn protector, the show achieved an off-kilter, dystopian sweetness that made for a winning combination. Then it went away.

The charming little animal-child hybrid show is back for a second season, which is sure to be an immediate success amongst fans. The series that surprised viewers across the globe during the pandemic became a super hit in days due to its chirpy little Deer Boy and the Big Man with more heart than anything else. “Sweet Tooth” was a hopeful story that didn’t feel like a burden at the time of a pandemic but rather gave people the dopamine boost they needed during the dreaded times of the lockdown. While it retains its dose of “cute and amusing,” it also manages to get deeper into the darker aspects of things without becoming overbearing or boring. But now it has the opportunity to become a bigger hit among a wider audience that wants to invest in a more emotional and perhaps bleaker atmosphere. Amongst the insanely successful satirical dramas,...

The sweetest little deer boy in all of the post-apocalyptic U.S. is returning to Netflix this month. "Sweet Tooth," based on the comic series of the same name by Jeff Lemire, debuted in 2021, telling an eerily topical story about humanity in the wake of a deadly pandemic. Around the same time that "The Sick" (also known as the H5G9 virus) emerged, children began to be born as human-animal hybrids. While these children were blamed for the sickness and hunted down by a citizen militia called the Last Men, Gus (Christian Convery) was hidden away from the world by his father (Will Forte), until the day his "Pubba" was killed and Gus wandered out into the world with a new guardian: former militiaman Tommy "Big Man" Jepperd (Nonso Anozie).

Single father Max (John Cho) hits the road with his teenage daughter, Wally, in this touching dramedy from director Hannah Marks. But don’t expect too many laughs: The emphasis is on the drama, since Max just found out his headaches are caused by a tumor, and his chances of surviving surgery are about 20 percent. “Even though it’s very sad, it’s empowering,” Marks promises. Also, while Max has lessons to impart (like teaching Wally to drive), it’s a two-lane road trip. Marks notes, “It’s not just a father teaching his daughter about life, but a daughter teaching her father about life. It’s such an important relationship in so many people’s lives, but you don’t see it explored that often.” Don’t Make Me Go also stars Kaya Scodelario, Jemaine Clement, Josh Thomson, Otis Dhanji, Stefania Lavie Owen, and more. Sweet Tooth's story is far from over.
Netflix on Thursday announced a renewal for Sweet Tooth Season, citing what the company calls as "60 million member households" watching the show in its first four weeks.
As is the case with Netflix's arbitrary numbers, the number above means that each of those households watched at two minutes of the series.
Sweet Tooth Season 2 will consist of 8 1-hour episodes.
Jim Mickle will serve as Executive Producer, Writer, Director, and Showrunner for season 2. Mickle said of the renewal,
“It’s been equally thrilling and heartwarming to experience how people around the world have been falling in love with our deer-boy."
"We couldn’t be more excited to continue our collaboration with Netflix and keep following Gus and his friends on their extraordinary journey,” he continued.
In addition to Mickle, Team Downey’s Susan Downey, Robert Downey Jr., and Amanda Burrell, and Linda Moran will return as Executive Producers.

The second season will consist of eight, one-hour episodes. News of the renewal comes just under two months after the debut of the first season, which dropped on June 4.
“It’s been equally thrilling and heartwarming to experience how people around the world have been falling in love with our deer-boy,” said series showrunner Jim Mickle. “We couldn’t be more excited to continue our collaboration with Netflix and keep following Gus and his friends on their extraordinary journey.”
“Sweet Tooth” is based on the DC comic book series of the same name by Jeff Lemire. The series takes place ten years after “The Great Crumble” wreaked havoc on the world and led to the mysterious emergence of hybrids — babies born part human, part animal. Unsure if hybrids are the cause or result of the virus, many humans fear and hunt them.
