Hollywood’s fastest-rising executives and actors gathered Wednesday for The Hollywood Reporter's annual Next Gen party at Nightingale Plaza in Los Angeles. Next Gen Talent honorees Suki Waterhouse, Alexandra Shipp, Tye Sheridan and Glen Powell turned out for the bash, which celebrated this year’s class of up-and-comers. But the mood was bittersweet as the town was still taking in Tuesday night’s surprising presidential election results. “It was a bright spot in an otherwise murky day,” said Verve agent and Next Gen honoree Melissa Solomon, whose father, Tennis Channel CEO Ken Solomon, previously made the list. Tye Sheridan was one of the only actors on the Cyclops shortlist to not be asked about the role before he was ultimately cast, but The Hollywood Reporter caught up with the actor at the Sundance Film Festival to get his thoughts on the role. Unfortunately, we only have the Tweet below to go on for the time being, but hopefully the full interview with be posted online soon. At least we know that he's a fan of the franchise, and I'm guessing he'll be shooting This summer and not next (it's obviously a typo considering the fact that the movie is actually released in May 2016). Joining him in X-Men: Apocalypse are Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner as Jean Grey and relative unknown Alexandra Shipp as Storm. Are you looking forward to seeing Sheridan as Cyclops? Well, there are going to be some new mutants on the block when "X-Men: Apocalypse" opens next summer. And by new mutants we mean new version of old mutants (this is getting confusing). Last night on Twitter, "X-Men: Apocalypse" director Bryan Singer announced that Alexandra Shipp will be playing Storm, Sophie Turner will be Jean Grey, and Tye Sheridan will be Cyclops. The movie will open on May 27th, 2016.
All three actors are up-and-coming stars, with Shipp having recently starred in the Lifetime "Aaliyah" movie (and since "X-Men: Apocalypse" is set in the '80s, we hope that she rocks that awesome mohawk), while Sheridan has starred in "The Tree of Life," "Mud," "Joe," and has a role in the upcoming "Scouts vs. Zombies." Turner, of course, stars as Sansa Stark on "Game of Thrones" and has a number of buzz-worthy projects opening in the next year, including the action thriller "Barely Lethal,...

Bryan Singer unveiled three more actors-cum-mutants appearing in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse film: Alexandra Shipp (a.k.a. Lifetime's Aaliyah), Sophie Turner (a.k.a. HBO's Sansa Stark), and Tye Sheridan (a.k.a. that kid from Mud). Shipp will play Storm; Turner, Jean Grey; and Sheridan, Cyclops. If they look more like Teen Titan cast members to you that's because this is going to be a weird, semi-retro 1980s-set installment, of which a majority of the plot details are still unknown. The three relatively young players join Oscar Isaac (the eponymous villain), Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender on the Singer-helmed project, which comes out May 27, 2016. Yeah, you've got a while, so maybe just watch the Ultron trailers on repeat to get your comic-book-movie fix.

Well, hot on the heels of Chiwetel Ejiofor being sought after for a role in Doctor Strange, and the official addition of Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner and Alexandra Shipp in X-Men: Apocalypse, we've got one more superhero story, but this one is a little less solid. The first big screen iteration of Aquaman isn't slated to arrive until July 27th, 2018, but that's not stopping Warner Bros. from getting their DC Comics cinematic universe in order ahead of time. Latino Review has early word that Star Trek franchise star Karl Urban is in the running for a supporting role in the aquatic adventure that already has Jason Momoa as the hero. Urban's specific role isn't known, but there's a chance that he could be playing the villain. The studio is apparently patiently waiting for Urban to get finished with Star Trek 3 so he can take this role in Aquaman. It...

Calling Professor X: I need a mind wipe, stat. It’s going to be difficult to get over the mental images I have of Jean Grey, Cyclops and Storm in movie form. They’ve only really been Famke Janssen, James Marsden and Halle Berry. They have all been portrayed in younger form, too — Jean Grey by Haley Ramm in X-Men: The Last Stand, Cyclops/Scott Summers by Tim Pocock in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Storm/Ororo Munroe in a deleted scene from the latter — but most fans hate those movies so even if those actors weren’t merely flashback and bit roles, they wouldn’t be employed for featured use of these three characters in their early years. So, instead, we’ve got some more notable young stars cast as the X-trio for the next installment, X-Men: Apocalypse. Game of Thrones redhead Sophie Turner is Jean, Mud and Joe and The Tree of Life’s Tye Sheridan is...

The last 12 months for Alexandra Shipp have certainly been busy for the young actress. After starring as Aaliyah in Lifetime's contentious biopic, and then starring in VH1's "Drumline" sequel, Shipp has now been cast as Storm, in the next "X-Men" movie - "X-Men: Apocalypse." We've known for months now that the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse would be finding new, young actors to take over the roles of Cyclops, Storm, and Jean Grey - and while we've heard many names floated around as potential candidates, now we officially know who the three choices are: Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, and Sophie Turner. Director Bryan Singer revealed the big casting announcement himself, taking to Twitter to make the very matter-of-fact reveal: Meet our new and brilliant young mutants: @Alexshipppp as #Storm @SophieT as #JeanGrey and @TyeSheridan as #Cyclops. #XmenApocalypse. Bryan Singer (@BryanSinger) January 23, 2015 So who are these young actors? Let's take a closer look: Tye Sheridan is only 18 years old, but has already managed to catch the eye of some very talented filmmakers. He made his big screen debut in Terrence Mallick's The Tree of Life, and earned a great deal of acclaim for his performance in the...

For the past few months, several names have been thrown in the mix for the roles of Ororo Munroe aka Storm, Jean Grey, and Scott Summers aka Cyclops, as the younger iterations of the mutants will be appearing in Bryan Singer's X-Men: Apocalypse. While those shortlists have shortened this past month, the director has just taken to his Twitter account to announce that actors Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Sophie Turner (Jean), and Tye Sheridan (Cyclops) have officially joined the ensemble cast. Shipp is probably best known for portraying the late songstress Aaliyah in a Lifetime biopic, while English actress Sophie Turner is known for her role on HBO's Game of Thrones, and the relatively unkown Tye Sheridan has been praised for his role in 2012's Mud. Anyhow, the trio join a mutant roster made up of Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, and Oscar Isaac, while X-Men: Apocalypse...

The recent X-Men films have given us glimpses into the past, introducing the classic characters we.ve all grown to know and love. We.ve seen a young Charles Xavier played by James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender as Erik Lehnsherr, otherwise known as Magneto, and Raven a.k.a. Mystique played by Jennifer Lawrence. And the newest edition to the franchise, X-Men: Apocalypse will introduce some familiar students of Xavier.s School For Gifted Youngsters, including Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm. The contenders for the roles are in. For young cyclops. Taron Egerton, Jamie Blackley and Tye Sheridan. For young Jean Grey. Sophie Turner and Saoirse Ronan. And for young Storm. Alexandra Shipp and Zendaya Coleman. This strew of new names is completely different from the rumors we.ve heard on the project in the last few months. Latino Review is reporting tonight that casting for X-Men: Apocalypse is well underway and a number of hot young actors are up for sizeable roles. We had heard previously that Chloe Grace Moretz was wanted for the younger version of Jean Grey, but apparently, scheduling issues have forced her to pass. Now, director Bryan Singer is testing Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner as well as Saoirse Ronan, who’s seen a lot of success in recent years with films like How I Live Now, Hanna and The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Further casting news indicates that Singer is looking at Kingsman: The Secret Service star Taron Edgerton for young Cyclops, with If I Stay‘s Jamie Blackley and Mud‘s Tye Sheridan both testing as well. Apparently, Sheridan is the frontrunner at this time but currently, no one has signed the dotted line. That being said, Edgerton likely has future...

With Bryan Singer's "X-Men: Apocalypse" moving its action into the 1980s, one of the big draws will be getting to see younger versions of some other pre-established characters from the old trilogy.
Today, Latino Review has word on the front runners for three key roles. These actors are said to be actually testing, as opposed to the names mentioned this past Fall who were just rumored.
First up, they say Taron Egerton ("Kingsman: The Secret Service"), Jamie Blackley ("If I Stay"), and Tye Sheridan ("Mud") are in the mix to play young Cyclops. They add Alexandra Shipp ("Aaliyah: The Princess Of R&B") and Zendaya Coleman are being considered for a young Storm, and Sophie Turner ("Game of Thrones") and Saoirse Ronan ("Atonement") are up for a young Jean Grey.
Jeff Sneider from The Wrap weighed in on the report shortly after, saying Sheridan is the frontrunner to play Cyclops.

Over at Latino-Review, El Mayimbe just broke the news about a handful of actors who are actually testing for the roles of young Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm in Bryan Singer's upcoming sequel X-Men: Apocalypse.
The most interesting battle, in my mind, is for the role of young Jean Grey. Reportedly, Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner and Hanna star Saoirse Ronan are testing for that part, and both seem like solid choices for the young telepath. Personally, I'd love to see Turner take a step up into the world of big-budget filmmaking, so I'm pulling for her to win this role.
As for the guys up for young Cyclops, the contenders are currently Taron Edgerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Jamie Blackley (If I Stay), and Tye Sheridan (Mud). Of these three, I've only seen Sheridan on the big screen before, so I suppose I should reserve judgment until...

Latino-Review have scored a cracking X-Men: Apocalypse scoop, revealing which young stars are being eyed for the roles of Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm in the 2016 movie. A shortlist emerged late last year of course, but here's a new one for you! For Scott Summers, Taron Edgerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Jamie Blackley (If I Stay), and Tye Sheridan (Mud) are all being considered. Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones) and Saoirse Ronan (Hanna) are being looked at for Jean Grey, but with the latter missing out on roles in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is she interested in a big franchise like the X-Men? Regardless, we also have news on Storm, as Alexandra Shipp (Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B) and Zendaya Coleman (K.C Undercover) are both possible candidates. All pretty solid possibilities here. Who would you guys pick? Off @ElMayimbe's X-men scoop,...

There's a scene in "The Princess of R&B" where rising star Aaliyah (Alexandra Shipp) is being fitted for a "new image" makeover. She vetoes all the fancy gowns in her dressing room, claiming they don't fit her style, and in a huff tells mentor R. Kelly (Cle Bennett), "[They're] so far away from who I really am, people will think I'm fake." Unfortunately, the same can be said of Lifetime's controversial biopic of the beloved R&B singer, who died tragically in a plane crash in 2001. The movie bears little resemblance to Aaliyah's life and career, and tells a dissatisfying story for fans as well as general audiences. In many ways the...

Based on Christopher John Farley's book Aaliyah: More Than a Woman, Lifetime's Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B follows the meteoric rise of the young singer, who was tragically killed in a plane crash in the Bahamas in 2001. The project was defined early on by many fits and starts, including the first actress cast as Aaliyah, Zendaya Coleman, leaving the production after heavy criticism on all sides (including her own). Coleman was then replaced by Alexandra Shipp, who also sings the movie's few songs, after a lawsuit from Aaliyah's family blocked the rights to her hits. The family's main

With Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B making its debut this Saturday, we’re most struck by the resemblance between the film’s star Alexandra Shipp and the late R&B singer. The young actress has Aaliyah‘s style down, especially when she serves the singer’s tomboy-ish, hip-hop swagger. And then at other times, we’re reminded that this is a Lifetime film and there’s really no replicating Aaliyah. Overall Shipp does a better job of bringing the singer’s story to life on the small screen than other performers who came before her. Amanda Fuller was too distracted by a poor choice of wigs in The Brittany Murphy Story to accurately portray the troubled actress. When it came to Liz & Dick, there was no getting past that Lindsay Lohan was somehow just playing an older version of herself. And then there was Jewel as...

So much of Aaliyah‘s story is connected to R. Kelly. Whatever the extent of their romantic relationship, Kelly helped push the young star to the top of the R&B charts, producing her 1994 breakthrough album Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number. Lifetime’s upcoming biopic Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B (Nov. 15) explores the pair’s history, including the much rumored wedding when Aaliyah was only 15 years old. But before we get into that, let’s hit the booth. In the clip above, we see a sunglasses-in-the-studio R.Kelly (Clé Bennett) telling his young protege (played by Alexandra Shipp) how he’s going to infuse her soft, sweet image with some “street” edge. This relationship is strictly professional, right? No? Do you think R. Kelly still gives high-fives? Check it out above.

Lifetime has revealed a new trailer for “Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B” — but it's not the late singer's music featured. Rather, Iggy Azalea's “Goddess” plays over Alexandra Shipp channeling the “Are You That Somebody?” singer. The new trailer also reveals the first bit of footage from the film itself and features Aaliyah getting a pep talk from her mom (Rachel Crawford). “It takes more than some hot producer to create a superstar; it takes the right artist,” she tells her daughter, who is the right artist to become that superstar. See video: Alexandra Shipp Channels Aaliyah in First Teaser for Lifetime's.

Lifetime is forging ahead with its Aaliyah biopic, Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B, unveiling a first glimpse of Alexandra Shipp in the title role. This is coming after considerable pushback from the late singer's relatives, who wanted a big studio movie treatment in the style of What's Love Got to Do With It? and its star Zendaya Coleman dropping out because she didn't feel "morally okay" doing the role without the family's blessing. Watch the clip below to see Shipp dancing in a crop top and baggy pants. But really, who can play Aaliyah? She's one in a million. The movie drops November 15.
