The event — held at the Beverly Hilton and making its in-person return after three years — included a host of performances, beginning with Maneskin working the crowd and getting Chance the Rapper to jump out of his seat to dance. Others who took to the stage included 88-year-old Frankie Valli, Lizzo, Elvis Costello with Juanes, Mj musical star Myles Frost, Lil Baby and Latto. Hudson honored Houston by singing a top-notch rendition of “The Greatest Love of All,” while Sheryl Crow paid tribute to the late Christine McVie with a performance of “Songbird.”

Los Angeles, Feb 6 (Ians) On the eve of the 65th Grammy Awards, the music industry’s glitterati were jazzed for the chance to resume the tradition of coming together for a night of tributes, shout-outs and impressive displays of talent, reports ‘Variety’.
Here are a few things ‘Variety’ learned from Clive Davis’s pre-Grammy Gala at the Beverly Hilton on Saturday evening (U.S. Pacific Time).
* Swiss Beatz does a spot-on Davis impression.
* Atlantic Records’ Julie Greenwald is a “bad-ass bitch” in Cardi B’s estimation.
* Elvis Costello considers Nick Lowe “his hero”.
* Joni Mitchell digs the sound of Latto’s ‘Big Energy’.
* It’s still a ton of fun to sing along with Frankie Valli, especially when he’s backed by four Italian rockers with swagger to spare.
* Atlantic Records’ Craig Kallman spent his childhood studying the fine print of album credits, searching for ‘mythic’ names such as Ahmet Ertegun,...

Married couple Cardi B and Offset packed on the Pda when they walked the red carpet at Clive Davis's Pre-Grammy gala at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Feb. 4. The "Wap" rapper wore a brown, patchwork dress with matching gloves, while simultaneously making the mullet cool again. Meanwhile, Offset made military chic a thing in a suit with two rows of gold buttons running down the front.
But as impressive as the couple's style was, it was their Pda that turned heads. The couple, who are parents to their 4-year-old daughter, Kulture, and 1-year-old son, Wave, made the most of their date night. Not only did they make out on the red carpet, but they broke out their tongues as well.
After their Pda-filled walk down the red carpet, the famous couple joined Lizzo and Myke Wright - who went Instagram official at the event - at their table once inside.

Nothing was going to stop Megan Fox from attending Clive Davis‘ pre-Grammys gala — not even a medical emergency.
The 36-year-old actress revealed on Instagram that she suffered a broken wrist and a concussion before attending the star-studded affair on Sunday in Beverly Hills, California. She had been photographed at the event with Machine Gun Kelly, sporting an elegant Alexis Mabille strapless red gown. However, it was her hot-pink brace on her right hand that was hard to look past.
“[O]ff the plane with a broken wrist and a concussion straight to a Grammys party ,” Fox shared on Instagram.
It’s unclear how Fox suffered the injuries or when, but she and Mgk made the most of the night — and have lots to celebrate. He earned his first Grammy nomination with Mainstream Sellout, and has stiff competition for Best Rock Album. The Black Keys (Dropout Boogie), Elvis Costello & The Imposters (The...

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is a crowd-pleasing, laugh-filled whodunit with a packed ensemble. The Rian Johnson sequel features a returning Daniel Craig as Southern gentleman detective Benoit Blanc, and this time he’s joined by fellow A-listers like Edward Norton, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista, as well as rising stars like Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., and Jessica Henwick. The Netflix film begins streaming just in time for the holidays, but many fans have already watched the mystery unfold during the film’s short theatrical run in November.
The overwhelmingly positive feedback for Glass Onion singled out the heavy-hitting ensemble, but particularly heaped praise upon Janelle Monáe as Cassandra “Andi” Brand, a mysterious character whose presence is crucial to the film’s plot. No spoilers here, but Monáe delivers a finely tuned, layered performance that suggests the musician-turned-actress is continuing to level-up in front of the camera. If...

The first series in the franchise to have an African-American and a woman as its marquee player, NatGeo’s Genius: Aretha is, like the title of its opening episode and the Queen of Soul herself, all about “Respect.”
Penned by Pulitzer Prize winner Suzan-Lori Parks, the pandemic-delayed premiere picks up with the Cynthia Erivo-portrayed Aretha Franklin performing a rousing rendition of “Chain of Fools” at triumphant 1967 show in Chicago before shifting the action to 1954 and the dangerous routes of rural Alabama. With threats and violence in the Jim Crow mists, we meet the pre-superstar Little Re (Shaian Jordan) and her preacher father Cl Franklin (Courtney B. Vance) with a flat tire and two racists breathing down their sweaty necks.

There’s a moment deep into “Aretha” that encapsulates why the third season of National Geographic’s “Genius” series chose Aretha Franklin as its latest brilliant subject of study. As with many of the show’s most effective scenes, it takes place in the recording studio with Aretha (Cynthia Erivo) listening intently to her surrounding band before directing them to change course, slow down, and most often, just plain keep up. This time, though, something intangible is off. Aretha silences the room to scan it with a quiet, penetrating stare. Behind the glass, her agent (Kimberly Hébert Gregory) and producer (David Cross) furrow their brows in worry, but also a palpable frisson of excitement at what’s to come from their most prized client. Finally, Aretha points to her piano’s closed lid.

Another series whose production was interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic has successfully finished its season. After a months-long coronavirus-related delay, National Geographic’s Genius: Aretha resumed production today in Atlanta as planned, and cast and crew were greeted with a welcome back letter from executive producer/showrunner Suzan-Lori Parks.
Genius: Aretha, starring Cynthia Erivo as the legendary singer Aretha Franklin, had filmed 5 1/2 episodes of its eight-episode order when production shut down mid-March amid the escalating coronavirus outbreak. Two weeks later, Nat Geo delayed the premiere of the limited series, originally slated for May 25. There is new date yet.
“We are fortunate to be working on such a beautiful, necessary, and relevant show In these challenging and difficult times,” Parks wrote in the letter, obtained by Deadline. “We’ll get through this together. We’ll lead with respect and compassion. We have been called to serve the Queen of Soul.”
Added Parks, “Queen Aretha Franklin’s existence has summoned us all here so that we can make a great show,...

Inner Circle’s “Bad Boys” — the unmistakable theme to the TV show “Cops,” which was pulled off the Paramount Network this week after more than 30 years on the air — amounts to a major novelty hit, but one with a long and interesting history behind it (as is so often the case with novelty hits). Its prominence and popularity are the result of an unusual series of events and circumstances which led to it becoming one of the reggae songs most beloved by non-Jamaicans.
Although based in Miami since the 1980s, Inner Circle started off in Jamaica in the late ‘60s as a group of young, middle-class musicians who would soon split off into two different entities, the other being the successful reggae group Third World. Self-contained bands like Inner Circle and Third World as recording artists have always been a relative rarity in Jamaica, where the norm is vocal groups...

David Cross has joined the cast of the upcoming third season of “Genius” at Nat Geo, which will focus on music legend Aretha Franklin.
Cross will star as music producer Jerry Wexler. Cynthia Erivo is set to play Franklin, with Courtney B. Vance, Malcolm Barrett, Patrice Covington, Kimberly Hébert Gregory, Rebecca Naomi Jones, and Sanai Victoria also set to star in the eight-episode season.
Cross’ Wexler is described as a scrappy, Bronx-born legendary producer who is one of the first to spot Franklin’s incredible talent and potential. He’s a street savvy music man with great ears who isn’t afraid to go into segregated clubs to find talented performers like Ray Charles and Wilson Pickett. He even coined the term “rhythm and blues.” He poached Franklin from Columbia to Atlantic Records and works with her from 1966-79 during which time she records some of her most iconic hits.

Melanie Martinez is taking her fans on a fantastical trip. In her directorial debut, the singer presented “K-12” in Los Angeles Tuesday (Sept. 3), ahead of the film’s worldwide one-night-only release on Sept. 5. The colorful feature-length production was financed by Martinez’s label, Atlantic Records, totaling an investment of $5 million to $6 million, she estimates.
A coming-of-age fantasy tale, “K-12” follows the character Cry Baby, played by Martinez, to a boarding school whose student body includes kids with magical powers, evil adults and angels who descend from above. As the story unfolds against a kaleidoscopic backdrop (Fernanda Guerrero served as production designer), real issues are tackled, including bullying, transphobia and gender inequality.
“Showing societal conditioning was a big goal of mine,” Martinez told Variety at the “K-12” L.A. premiere. “I thought it was the perfect metaphor. School being like this thing that we have to go through and learn from...
