We've known for some time now that 2024 is something of a recalibration year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe after a rough past year for the blockbuster franchise. But with Wolverine & Deadpool just weeks away and X-Men '97 keeping the Marvel flag flying high on Disney+ right now, plans for Kevin Feige and co's big comeback are already well underway. And, during an announcement-laden Disney Upfront presentation yesterday, we got some big release updates for the studio's upcoming slate of Disney+ series.
Firstly, the House of Mouse — not Harkness — confirmed that they've been leading fans a merry dance with the titling of their upcoming WandaVision spin-off series, centred around everyone's favourite badass (and just plain bad) witch. It's not Agatha: House Of Harkness, The Coven Of Chaos, The Darkhold Diaries, or in fact The Lying Witch With Great Wardrobe. Turns out it was Agatha All Along, well, all along — cheeky devils!

Marvel’s upcoming WandaVision spin-off starring Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness finally has an official title—for real this time—and a release date on Disney+.
The Agatha series has been through several titles over the years, including Agatha: House of Harkness, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, and Agatha: The Lying Witch with Great Wardrobe. It turns out those constant title changes were the result of the titular pesky witch, and the actual title was unveiled during Disney’s 2024 Upfront Presentation: Agatha All Along. The first two episodes of the series will debut on Disney+ on September 18th.

The fitting title takes its name from the viral ear-worm song featuring in WandaVision from composers Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. Admit it, you’re humming it right now.

The Marvel Studios series and WandaVision spinoff starring Kathryn Hahn finally has a set title.
Agatha All Along is the official title of the series, it was revealed at Disney’s upfront presentation Tuesday. Hahn and co-stars Joe Locke and Patti LuPone were on stage making the reveal, with the trio also unveiling the release date of Sept. 18. The show will premiere with two episodes, which is standard for Marvel.
The series has had several titles since it was announced in 2021. The subtitles have ranged from House of Harkness to Darkhold Diaries to Coven of Chaos. There have been so many title changes that it became a joke, with Marvel leaning in on the constant changes. In fact, Agatha: The Lying Witch with the Great Wardrobe popped up as a title on social media yesterday.
The new title is actually the name of the Agatha theme song that debuted in the seventh episode of WandaVision.

Just weeks ago, Sir Elton John became the 19th entertainer to win the highly desirable Egot by claiming his first ever Emmy Award. And now, which person is the most likely to be the 20th Egot later this year, in 2025 or beyond? Here is a summary of the 80 people who have the best chance right now.
The most likely duo could be composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (actually meaning a 20th and 21st Egot if they win). They are producers and songwriters for the third season of “Only Murders in the Building,” so they will have a couple of opportunities in September at the Emmys. They first won an Oscar, Tony, and Grammy.
For the 2024 Grammys, nobody is nominated who could become an Egot, so the next possible chance would be 2025. There are a total of 25 people who have won everything needed except a Grammy. They are actress Ellen Burstyn,...

In the Renaissance era of the 1990s, Walt Disney Animation Studios had seemingly cracked the code in terms of telling old-fashioned stories with a modern twist. There were still plenty of fables and fairy tales to adapt, from the story of a mermaid who wanted to be a human to a star-crossed romance between a brainy young woman and a monstrous beast. And the studio was able to harness present-day Broadway-style songs into these stories, lending them a grandeur and epic quality that made them annual theatrical events. To the eagle-eyed viewer, there were also funny little Easter eggs referencing past Disney films, if you knew where to look. In "Aladdin," for example, there's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment in which the portly Sultan is seen playing with a series of figurines, including one that is unmistakably the Beast from "Beauty and the Beast." To recognize this gag was a miniature reward...

Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed today that the studio is working on Frozen 4, another sequel in the hugely successful animated franchise.
If you’re wondering about Frozen 3, don’t worry, you didn’t miss its release. Disney just can't — apologies in advance — let it go. Jennifer Lee, Chief Creative Officer at Disney Animation, confirmed this afternoon that work has quietly begun on a third edition in the company’s Frozen film franchise during a keynote session at the London Film Festival (Lff).
Lee — who was a writer and director on the first two Frozen films — was tightlipped about any specific details regarding the threequel, including timeframes and production status, but told the Lff audience that she is “blown away” by the work the studio already has in the can.
“All I’ll say is that last week, they carved out time for me to work with the creative team on it. And I’m blown away,” Lee said. “I’m so excited. I don’t know what I’m doing on it yet. I might be doing nothing.”

Hulu is saying so long to Up Here, the musical romantic comedy from Dear Evan Hansen writer Steven Levenson, after one season.
The eight-episode series, which also hailed from Danielle Sanchez-Witzel (The Carmichael Show), Thomas Kail, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, was set in New York City in 1999 and followed a couple as they fall in love and discover that the single greatest obstacle to finding happiness together might just be themselves. It bowed in March.
Up Here starred Mae Whitman, Carlos Valdes, Katie Finneran, Sophia Hammons, Emilia Suárez, Andréa Burns, John Hodgman and Scott Porter.
20th Television and Kail’s Old 320 Sycamore Productions co-produced the series.

Hulu has canceled its musical rom-com Up Here after a single season.
The cancellation of the series, starring Mae Whitman and Carlos Valdes as a would-be couple derailed by both external issues and the (singing) voices in their heads, comes four months after its binge release in late March. It will remain on Hulu, avoiding the fate of some other recent shows pulled from the streamer and sibling Disney+ in cost-cutting moves.
As is the case with most streaming series, detailed viewing data for Up Here isn’t available.
Up Here boasts an impressive creative team, with Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (Frozen, Coco) writing original songs and scripts from Danielle Sanchez-Witzel (New Girl) and Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen), all of whom are credited as co-creators. Thomas Kail (Hamilton) directed the first episode.

Despite all the musical superstars who entered this year’s Emmy competition, only one – Ed Sheeran – managed to score when the 75th annual Emmy Award nominations were announced Wednesday.
Sheeran was nominated (along with co-writers Max Martin and Foy Vance) for the song “A Beautiful Game” for the season 3 finale of “Ted Lasso,” one of two songs from the popular Apple TV+ series that made it into the music-and-lyrics category.
Emmy’s 550-member music peer group ignored the original songs entered by Dolly Parton, David Byrne, Steve Martin, Kid Cudi, Donald Glover and Lainey Wilson, as well as those from such Oscar-winning tunesmiths as Alan Menken, Steven Schwartz, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
Among the seven music categories, a surprising number of first-time nominees was recognized, and more than one-fourth of all the nominees in the five composition and songwriting categories are women, another positive sign of change in the Hollywood musical landscape.

Three months from now, the Weeknd might just have an Emmy to place alongside his four Grammys and his Oscar nomination.
That’s because he joins a dozen other music superstars — including Dolly Parton, Common, Ryan Tedder, “Weird Al” Yankovic and Meshell Ndegeocello — who have entered work in this year’s Emmy competition.
Voting began yesterday in the seven music categories. Approximately 550 members of the Academy’s music branch will cast ballots, although viewing the hundreds of entries before voting ends on June 26 is an impossible task, Academy officials privately concede.
The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, is among the 19 entries in the Music Direction category. He submitted “The Weeknd Live at Sofi Stadium,” an HBO special that aired in February. If nominated, he’s likely to be up against such past winners as Adam Blackstone and Rickey Minor (“The Oscars”).

Up Here composer Christophe Beck said the Hulu musical series’ score was intended to stand out from the musical numbers. Beck is an old college friend of co-writer Robert Lopez and already collaborated with Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez on the Frozen films.
“We really wanted to set the score a little bit apart from the songs,” Beck said during a panel at Deadline’s Sound & Screen event. “The score takes a more contemporary acoustic rock approach but it’s also not afraid to go to different places as needed. Overall I think the electric guitar is a big part of the sound of the score.”
Based on Lopez and Anderson-Lopez’s stage musical, Up Here follows Lindsay (Mae Whitman) and Miguel (Carlos Valdez), a couple falling in love in 1999. The voices in their heads, representing parents and friends, sing their thoughts.

Exclusive: King Charles III heaped royal praise on Andrew Lloyd Webber when he first heard the composer play a piano version of the coronation anthem, telling the peer that the music gave him “goosebumps and tears.”

Previously, both scored Oscar nominations in the same year for their work on “Little Women” (Adapted Screenplay for Gerwig) and “Marriage Story” (Original Screenplay for Baumbach). Disney’s announcement earlier this year that another sequel to “Frozen” was in the works came as a surprise — not just to fans, but to the Oscar-winning songwriting team responsible for the franchise’s songs such as “Let It Go” and “Into the Unknown”.
The announcement came in February during Disney CEO Bob Iger’s earnings call with investors, in which he announced plans for “Frozen 3”, “Toy Story 5” and “Zootopia 3”.
According to Kristen Anderson-Lopez and husband Robert Lopez, who wrote the beloved “Frozen” songs, they had no idea another “Frozen” sequel was coming.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for the first season of “Up Here,” now streaming on Hulu.
The first time Mae Whitman sang in front of an audience on camera, it was just her, a guitar and her “Parenthood” family cheering her on from the front row. On the NBC drama, Whitman’s reckless young character Amber finally grew up by channeling her angst through music. For character and performer alike, it required overcoming the terror of standing in front of people and bearing a piece of her soul as she sang.
Back then, it helped having her costars staring back at her.
“It really felt like I was doing a performance in front of my family,” Whitman tells Variety. “I remember getting up on stage for the scene and seeing the whole cast sitting right up front taking pictures and crying. It was a really special way to have...

It’s an interesting, telling choice that “Up Here,” Hulu’s new musical sitcom starring Mae Whitman and Carlos Valdes, is set in 1999. Not merely is the turn of the century, according to the roughly 20-year nostalgia cycle, currently in vogue, but the particular sort of moment the Y2K era was lends texture and meaning to the story “Up Here” tells. Assaying a time just before the social web allowed loners to find one another, “Up Here” presents a winning and lovely pair of oddballs singing their hearts out, in disbelief at having found one another.
Here, Whitman plays Lindsay, who was lectured in childhood to shield her spiky and odd side from peers in order to be liked. “You show people the nice parts, because believe me, that’s all that people want to see,” her mother (Katie Finneran) tells her; grown up, she’s terrified to show vulnerability at all.

Hulu’s Up Here takes as one of its central themes the question of whether it’s possible to ever truly and totally know someone, even from within the depths of true love. It’s woven right there into the theme song: A declarative “I can never know you” is chased by the more wistful “Can I ever know you?”
But for two lovers to struggle to open up to each other is one thing. For an audience to have trouble connecting is another. Up Here has its charms, first and foremost a pair of winning lead performances by Carlos Valdes and Mae Whitman. But there’s a disappointing shallowness to the entire affair, even after all the time spent delving into the characters’ innermost psyches.

Streaming March 24, Hulu’s “Up Here” joins the musical comedy pantheon of “Smash,” “Schmigadoon” and “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” with Mae Whitman and Carlos Valdes as the romantic leads. The series is based on a play of the same name from songwriting duo Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, which opened at La Jolla Playhouse in 2015.
Set in New York City in 1999, the show follows Lindsay and Miguel as they fall in love and discover their inner critic is their biggest obstacle to finding happiness. Robert and Kristen, also executive producers, weave a tapestry of 21 new and original ’90s-esque songs as the couple navigate fear, fantasies and chaotic inner voices that second-guess their instinct for love.
Here, the Lopezes talk about the show’s 17-year journey from stage to screen and how their own courtship in the ’90s inspired them.

I’m a sucker for musicals — counting the days till Season 2 of Schmigadoon! — but despite some fairly catchy tunes and the considerable charms of its adorable leads, there were times I wanted to beg Up Here to unplug the jukebox in their heads. This eight-part rom-com, based on a 2015 stage musical by the award-winning team of Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, suffers from an off-putting gimmick. Both Lindsay (Parenthood’s Mae Whitman), a would-be writer who fled her dull fiancé in Vermont to discover herself in New York, and Miguel (The Flash’s Carlos Valdes), a love-shy fledgling investment analyst who would rather design video games, are constantly besieged by inner voices, a wet-blanket Greek chorus of nagging parents and obnoxiously scornful observers. There are some ringers among these harpies, including two-time Tony winner Katie Finneran and the wonderful Andréa Burns (Broadway’s In the Heights) as Lindsay’s and Miguel’s overprotective moms,...

Up Here is one of the most sincere musical television series to come along in a while.
It's based on the 2015 musical "Up Here" by husband-and-wife team Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
We're all nostalgic for the 1990s now, so here's a throwback to the rom-coms of the era. It's in no way trying to reinvent the genre -- let's call it an homage.
Even the general conceit that the main characters have imaginary people living in their heads that they converse with regularly is not so unique. It's not far off from Herman's Head, Inside Out, or the "Dream Ghosts" sequence from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
There are some Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist vibes going on, too.
The original musical came out in 2015 and was described as Annie Hall meets Cirque Du Soleil.
Lopez and Anderson-Lopez are responsible for the songs here, and they are overall lovely, fun, and funny. Robert Lopez is an Egot winner,...

Audiences of all ages love to watch old and new Disney movies based on classic fairy tales. Several years ago, Disney announced they were working on a version of Jack and the Beanstalk named Gigantic. Skillful people were working on the film, and two Academy Award-winning individuals were behind the music. One of them is even an Egot winner. However, the film never saw the light of day.
Disney canceled ‘Gigantic’ due to creative differences
Gigantic would have taken place in Spain, where Jack discovers giants living in the clouds. Fans of the original story felt excited by the adaptation, but it would never happen. According to MsMojo, Disney and Pixar canceled Gigantic about two years into production.
The reason for the cancellation? Unspecified creative differences. Nevertheless, the movie could have been Disney’s next hit due to the people working on it.

Three of Disney’s most popular animated franchises are getting new installments. Sequels in the “Frozen” and “Zootopia” series are both in development at Walt Disney Animation Studios, while a fifth film in the “Toy Story” series is in the works at Pixar.
News of these sequels was revealed by Walt Disney Corporation CEO Bob Iger during the company’s Q1 2023 earnings call on Wednesday.
“Today I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, ‘Toy Story,’ ‘Frozen’ and ‘Zootopia,'” Iger said during the call. “We’ll have more to share about these productions soon, but this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises.”
The announcement of these three sequels followed some brutal news from Iger, who shared that 7,000 employees would be laid off at the company.

Never underestimate the power of Patti LuPone. The Broadway legend who recently shocked the world by dropping her membership with the Actor's Equity union has been announced as the most recent cast member of the "WandaVision" spin-off, "Agatha: Coven of Chaos" for Disney+ (via Deadline). "WandaVision" was a huge hit for the streamer, and proved that Marvel TV shows had the power to be just as popular and well-scripted as the multi-million dollar blockbuster feature films.
Kathryn Hahn dazzled viewers with her portrayal of the witch Agatha Harkness, even nabbing an Emmy win for the song "Agatha All Along," written by "Frozen" songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. Though Season 2 of Apple TV+’s “Central Park” features a slew of changes for the lovable Tillermans, one family member has a harder time than most. Not only is daughter Molly — now voiced by Emmy Raver-Lampman to provide accurate representation for the mixed-race character — navigating puberty, but she also goes shopping for her first bra and has her first glimpse of romance.
Josh Gad, who voices Birdie and co-created the series alongside Loren Bouchard and Nora Smith, says the addition of Raver-Lampman really allowed the writers to dive into the character, using her experience to help the character grow. He says, “The second season was really Molly’s season.”
Here, Gad and Raver-Lampman reflect on Molly’s evolution this season and how the show’s catchiest ear worm, by Bobby Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, came together.
One of the highlights this season was seeing Molly evolve and go through puberty.

Carlos Valdes will star opposite Mae Whitman in the upcoming Hulu series “Up Here.”
The series received an eight-episode order at Hulu back in January. It is described as a musical romantic comedy set in New York City in the waning days of 1999. It follows the extraordinary story of one ordinary couple, as they fall in love – and discover that the single greatest obstacle to finding happiness together might just be themselves – and the treacherous world of memories, obsessions, fears, and fantasies that lives inside their heads.
Valdes will play Miguel. Sensitive and thoughtful, with an artistic sensibility and a romantic streak, Miguel has always struggled with the feeling that he doesn’t quite belong. But after a cataclysmic break-up, Miguel has decided to reinvent himself, burying his feelings and ditching a promising career as a video game concept artist for the lucrative world of investment banking, determined never to get hurt again.
