Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović is debuting her follow-up to Cannes Camera d’Or-winning “Murina.”
The acclaimed writer-director, who was nominated for three Film Independent Spirit Awards, helms Miu Miu short film “Stane,” part of the brand’s “Women’s Tales” campaign. “Stane” premiered at the Venice Film Festival’s Giornate Degli Autori on September 3.
The official synopsis reads: A complex construction site, New York’s skyline in the distance, and fresh betrayal. Stane is in charge on-site, soon to inherit the family business from her father, who built it up as a Croatian immigrant also building the American dream. But Stane’s marriage is under threat of demolition. What ensues is a public reckoning between traditional, patriarchal expectations made upon wives versus Stane’s own pain and anger. But Stane is building her own life story though — outside of the permission of men.

Isabelle Huppert Drama, Peter Sarsgaard Spanish Flu Satire, Celine Sciamma Short Set for Venice Days
The Giornate Degli Autori — the independently run event that takes place alongside the Venice Film Festival and is often referred to simply as Venice Days — has unveiled the lineup for its 2023 edition (also it’s 20th).
Among the 10 titles world premiering in competition is Elise Girard’s drama Sidonie in Japan, starring Isabelle Huppert as a French writer mourning her husband’s death while on a book tour. Out of competition, Coup! — a satire set during the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic and starring Peter Sarsgaard and Billy Magnussen — will bow, while special events include the world premiere of This Is How a Child Becomes a Poet, a short from Portrait of a Lady on Fire director Céline Sciamma (who was previously president of the Venice Days jury). There will also be a special daylong event in honor of late Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallée, including a screening of his 2005 drama C.R.A.Z.Y.

French director Élise Girard’s “Sidonie in Japan,” starring Isabelle Huppert as a French writer mourning her husband’s death while on a book tour of Japan, is among titles set to launch from the Venice Film Festival’s independently run Giornate Degli Autori.
The section, also known as Venice Days, has unveiled its lineup comprising 10 titles world premiering in competition – six of which are first works – and in other sections displaying a wide range of genres and visual styles, but tied together by “a common discourse,” said the section’s artistic director Gaia Furrer.
The selected films “with all their thematic or formal eclecticism, still dialogue with each other,” Furrer said in a statement.
Opening the section in competition is Italian director Tommaso Santambrogio’s black-and-white drama “Oceans Are the Real Continents,” set and shot in decadent contemporary Cuba (see image below). This is Santambrogio’s first feature, but...

The Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) were the big winners at last night's Directors Guild of America's DGA Awards. The filmmaking duo took home the top prize, Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film, for "Everything Everywhere All At Once" — beating out directing legend Steven Spielberg ("The Fabelmans"), as well as Joseph Kosinski's massive aerial action film "Maverick," Todd Field's critical darling "Tár," and Martin McDonagh's black comedy "The Banshees of Inisherin."
These days, the Daniels seem to embody their hit film, being everything, everywhere, all at once. The Michelle Yeoh-led maximalist action-comedy has something for everyone, and is deeply, satisfyingly, weird. It topped many best-of lists (it was my #1 pick for Best Films of 2022) and is a favorite to take home the Academy Award for Best Picture. Now with a DGA Award under their belts, the odds of that happening are better than ever.

With less than a month to go before the Oscars, every award show counts. The next few weeks will see all of the major Hollywood guilds give out their annual awards, ensuring that each department gets its moment in the spotlight. Tonight, directors took center stage as Hollywood convened at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for the Directors Guild of America Awards.
The ceremony honored outstanding achievement in both film and television directing, and the former category is often seen as predicting the Best Director winner at the Academy Awards. Four of the five Best Director nominees competed in the Feature Film category tonight: Steven Spielberg (“The Fabelmans”), Martin McDonagh (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Todd Field (“TÁR”), and Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”). “Triangle of Sadness” director Ruben Östlund is not nominated, with “Top Gun: Maverick” helmer Joseph Kosinski taking his place.

The 75th annual Directors Guild Awards have been handed out at the Beverly Hilton, and the night’s big award brought a bit of a surprise as Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, directors of Everything Everywhere All at Once, beat out Steven Spielberg for the top prize.
The DGA is a strong predictor of Oscar success historically, missing the eventual Best Director winner only eight times in 74 years. Last year, the guild awarded Jane Campion its top film prize for The Power of the Dog, which marked a big step on her path to winning Best Director at the Oscars.
After two consecutive years awarding female directors its top prize (Jane Campion and Chloé Zhao) and watching them go on to take the corresponding Oscar, the Director’s Guild of America nominated a slate of men this year. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert have been named the best theatrical-film directors of 2022 for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” by the Directors Guild of America, which presented its 75th annual DGA Awards on Saturday night in Beverly Hills.
The two directors, who go by the name The Daniels, won for the freewheeling film, topping Steven Spielberg for “The Fabelmans,” Martin McDonagh for “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Todd Field for “Tar” and Joseph Kosinski for “Top Gun: Maverick.” They are only the third directing team to win the DGA Award, after the Coen brothers for “No Country for Old Men” and Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins for “West Side Story.”

The Directors Guild of America revealed its winners for the 2023 DGA Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles Saturday night, with Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan taking home the top prize for Everything Everywhere All at Once.
To kick off the ceremony, Lesli Linka Glatter, the DGA’s president, offered welcome remarks before introducing host Judd Apatow, who has previously hosted the annual show three times.
During his opening monologue, the comedian delivered some punches, mocking the fact that the show was only being livestreamed “to the back of this room. This show is so irrelevant, it’s shocking Elon Musk hasn’t bought it yet.” His joke about “honoring the directors who didn’t feel a need to make a Pinocchio movie this year” received a big reaction from the audience, and he also nodded to the fact that there were no female filmmakers nominated in the top director category this year.

Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović’s Murina has garnered her a DGA nomination for first-time feature — an honor she also won at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. That’s in large part because of her willingness to face her greatest fears in the name of her art. “I’m terrified of the water,” she says. “I needed to make a movie underwater, because I really wanted to tap into the fear. It’s important to include your fears in your work.”
A coming-of-age story, Murina follows Julija, a teenager living on a remote island in Croatia with her domineering father and subservient mother. When her dad’s wealthy friend Javier (Cliff Curtis) comes to stay with the family, tensions rise as he offers Julija a possible exit out of her abusive household.

Just one year after Maggie Gyllenhaal (“The Lost Daughter”) became the second woman to win the Directors Guild of America’s First-Time Film Director award, Charlotte Wells (“Aftersun”) is set to follow her as the category’s third female champ. The 35-year-old Scottish filmmaker, who helmed three narrative shorts between 2015 and 2017, has already been heavily feted for her feature directing (and writing) debut with accolades such as the Cannes French Touch Prize and the Gotham Award for Best Breakthrough Director. Now, the fact that a whopping 96 of Gold Derby’s 2023 DGA Awards predictions odds-makers have her as their top choice in the rookie race should translate to a decisive win.

The Oscar nominations revealed Tuesday did not include any female directors, extending a trend across this season’s awards landscape. It means the modest streak of women winning the Directing Oscar will end at two, after back-to-back wins the past two years with Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog) in 2022 and Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) in 2021.

The advocacy group Women in Film says it is “disappointed” by the Directors Guild of America awards’ lack of female nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film.
In a statement Wednesday, the group pointed out that 2022 saw “women like Sarah Polley, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Chinonye Chukwu, and Maria Schrader helm some of the most acclaimed and successful films.”
While there were no female nominees on the DGA’s list announced earlier in the day, four of the five nominees in the first-time feature category were women: Alice Diop for “Saint Omer,” Audrey Diwan for “Happening,” Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovic for “Murina” and Charlotte Wells for “Aftersun.”

After last night’s Golden Globes thing, we had only less than 12 hours to regroup and prepare for the real deal: First SAG nominations, and then DGA, the initial two major guild indicators of where the real sentiment might lie before Oscar voting begins Thursday. With the Producers Guild, often a very Oscar-predictive list as well, also coming Thursday, the best barometers of where industry thinking is at the moment will be on the table.
So what did the Directors Guild tell us? After two years in a row awarding female directors their top prize and watching them go on to take the corresponding Oscar, it is time for the men to dominate once again. Although there were no surprises necessarily of who made the cut — Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans), Todd Field (Tár), Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin...

The Directors Guild of America has released their nominees for their annual DGA Awards ceremony. These ceremonies usually serve as markers of awards season moving forward, while highlighting some of the more overlooked aspects of a production. Not only are directors themselves honored when a movie or show of theirs is nominated, but unit production managers and assistant directors are, as well. It's really cool that the DGA honors these types of roles in their nominations, as they and many others truly are the unsung heroes of our favorite pieces of media.
It's just a shame that they aren't more diverse in their honors. The main film category includes expected favorites like Steven Spielberg ("The Fabelmans") and Martin McDonagh ("The Banshees of Inisherin"), while also sliding in new voices such as Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. Unfortunately, no female directors were nominated, not even awards favorites like Sarah Polley ("Women Talking"). On the bright side,...

The Directors Guild of America has announced the nominations for its two film categories at the upcoming 75th annual DGA Awards.
While “The Fabelmans” director Steven Spielberg getting into the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film category a second year in a row was the most expected outcome, the rest of the list calls for a longer conversation about how the Guild has shown unexpected progress and unfortunately expected regression.
After two years in a row where a woman director won the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film (“Nomadland” director Chloé Zhao in 2021 and “The Power of the Dog” director Jane Campion in 2022), the guild did not even nominate a single woman in the category this year. Though it was a predictable outcome as the most likely candidates, “Women Talking” director Sarah Polley and “The Woman King” director Gina Prince-Bythewood, both have films that have...

The five Directors Guild of America Awards nominees for Best Director are: our predicted Oscar winner Steven Spielberg (“The Fabelmans”), four of his closest rivals — the Daniels (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Todd Field (“Tar”), Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin”) — plus surprise nominee Joseph Kosinski (“Top Gun: Maverick”).
In the 74-year history of the DGA Awards there have only been five years when the whole roster went on to reap Academy Award nominations. Among the helmers hoping to overcome their DGA snubs and make it to the Oscars are: Edward Berger (“All Quiet on the Western Front”), James Cameron (“Avatar: The Way of the Water”), Baz Luhrmann (“Elvis”) and Sarah Polley (“Women Talking”).
Contending for First-Time Feature Director are: Alice Diop (“Saint Omer”), Audrey Diwan (“Happening”), John Patton Ford (“Emily the Criminal”), Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovic (“Murina”) and Charlotte Wells (“Aftersun”).

As Natalie Portman famously pointed out at the Golden Globes in 2018, “here are the all-male nominees” for the 2023 Directors Guild of America Awards.
In the main category for feature film, the group nominated Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert(“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Todd Field (“Tár”), Joseph Kosinski (“Top Gun: Maverick”), Martin McDonagh (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) and Steven Spielberg (“The Fabelmans”).
Despite critically acclaimed movies from female directors like Sarah Polley (“Women Talking”), Gina Prince-Bythewood (“The Woman King”), Chinonye Chukwu (“Till”) and Maria Schrader (“She Said”), the DGA voters failed to recognize their achievements. This comes after the Golden Globes gave Spielberg its directing prize on Tuesday, where no women were nominated.
Also missing from the lineup are James Cameron for “Avatar: The Way of Water” and Baz Luhrmann for “Elvis,” both considered very competitive in the directing races.

Steven Spielberg, Martin McDonagh, Todd Field, Joseph Kosinski and the team of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert have been nominated by the Directors Guild of America, which announced its nominees in the film categories for the 75th annual DGA Awards on Wednesday.
Spielberg was nominated for “The Fabelmans,” McDonagh for “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Field for “Tár,” Kosinski for “Top Gun: Maverick” and Kwan and Scheinert, who direct together under the name “The Daniels,” for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

The Oscar races for best picture, director and the four acting categories will be put into focus.
On Wednesday, Jan. 11, the SAG Awards will kick things off with their unveiling of its nominees in film and television (Variety has shared its final predictions).
Afterward, the Directors Guild of America will reveal the five directorial achievements for this year’s upcoming 75th ceremony, scheduled to take place on Saturday, Feb. 18, the day before the BAFTA Awards.
You can’t talk about the director race without Steven Spielberg being a part of it, even with the BAFTA snub from the longlist. This year, Spielberg, who won the Oscar prize twice for helming — “Schindler’s List” (1993) and “Saving Private Ryan” (1998) — finds himself in one of his most substantial positions yet for his deeply personal drama “The Fabelmans.” With three DGA wins and 12 nominations, Spielberg is both the most awarded and most nominated filmmaker in history.

2022 saw the loss of one of my most admired film directors, a man who brought me to seek out different films and examine cinema on another level. Jean-Luc Goadard’s Pierrot le Fou, a film which I was so excited to see featured in this year’s updated Sight and Sound Greatest Films of All Time, and one that still brings me the same joy it did when I first watched it at University. Films, for me, alongside so much, are a vehicle of escapism allowing me to spend a few precious hours outside of the constant push and pulls of life and this year I have been awed and delighted by an incredible array of talent and features which have stuck with me long after the credits rolled.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once,” a multiverse-spanning adventure, scored at the 32nd annual Gotham Awards, capturing the prize for best feature. It also nabbed a best supporting performance honor for Ke Huy Quan, a former child star best known for his work in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” who returned to acting after a nearly 20-year hiatus.
“Oftentimes it is in independent films, where actors who otherwise wouldn’t get a chance, find their opportunities,” Quan said in an emotional speech. “I was that actor.”
Other notable winners included Danielle Deadwyler, who nabbed a best leading performance prize for her work as a grieving mother in “Till.” The Gothams’ acting prizes are gender-neutral, which meant that Deadwyler not only competed with the likes of Cate Blanchett in “Tár,” but that she also beat out contenders such as Brendan Fraser in “The Whale” and Paul Mescal in “Aftersun.”
