A couple “very cool” characters are coming to The Simpsons in the March 20 episode. The Weeknd (as Abel Tesfaye is known professionally) voices two characters — a famous kid influencer who owns an ultra-cool skate wear brand and his father — in “Bart the Cool Kid,” and TV Insider has an exclusive first look at the guest spot. Check out the photos above and below. The Simpsons © 2022 by 20th Television. “The Weeknd is a huge animation fan so he reached out to us, which we were super excited about,” the episode’s writer, Ryan Koh, says. “He’s obviously a very cool human, so he seemed like a natural fit to play a very cool boy and his very cool dad. The two characters he plays are impossibly rich, super-confident and self-assured, and we hoped that since the Weeknd is an impossibly rich music megastar, he would also be confident and self-assured,...

The programming for adults vs. programming for kids debate has long been the push-pull in animation. But what about programming about kids that teaches adults important lessons? Several of this year’s animated program Emmy nominees do just that.
Comedy Central’s “South Park: The Pandemic Special,” written by series co-creator Trey Parker, uses its child characters to help satirize the horrific events of last year. The Season 4 premiere of Netflix’s “Big Mouth,” “The New Me,” is written by comedian Patti Harrison and series co-creator Andrew Goldberg and shows the cast of young teens connecting with their friend Natalie (guest star Josie Totah) after learning she’s transitioned. And Fox’s “The Simpsons” is nominated for “The Dad-Feelings Limited,” writer and co-exec producer Ryan Koh’s episode about episode about Springfield resident Comic Book Guy (Hank Azaria), and his internalized issues with his own upbringing and how they relate to his relationship with children.

Ryan Koh has just secured his place alongside a group of legends from The Simpsons — but this has nothing to do with Bart, Homer, Lisa or any of the Springfield gang.
Instead, Koh, a writer and executive producer on the Fox animated series, just earned a first-place finish in staff’s uber-competitive fantasy summer box office league. As part of the prize, Koh was gifted a bold red sign that sits in front of his parking spot that reads “Simpsons Box Office Champion” and gets his name added to a banner hanging from the ceiling in the staff office....

Of all the canards foisted upon and between culture fans in 2013, there was none more dubious than the notion that the supposed “battle” of television vs. film had come to an end, with the former declared the victor. Besides the fact that comparing such disparate mediums is a fool’s errand at best, both are such vast and complicated enterprises that any pitched battle likely only pits narrow conceptions of each against the other. (Strawman vs. strawman, the most popular form of discourse on the Internet.) The simplest way to invalidate the entire argument quickly: where films only have to be taken on their own terms as one complete work, TV series need to be considered in at least three contexts: by episode, by season, and by the overall run of the series.
With several shows ending their runs this year, including Breaking Bad, Dexter, Southland, Spartacus, and The Killing (up until its latest resurrection,...

New Girl, Season 2, Episode 19: “Quick Hardening Caulk”
Written by Brett Baer, Dave Finkel and Ryan Koh
Directed by Lorene Scafaria
Airs on Tuesdays at 9pm on Fox
Caulking is a process used to seal cracks and in “Quick Hardening Caulk”, New Girl cleverly uses the opportunity after a two-week break to seal the cracks in its narrative. Every week New Girl manages to squeeze in a lot without feeling rushed or sacrificing quality and this week’s episode is no exception. Picking up where we left off two weeks ago, both the Cece/Schmidt and Nick/Jess relationships get a lot of attention this week.
Suffering depression from Cece’s engagement to Shevrang, Schmidt parks himself at Nick’s bar and drowns his sorrows with a melon liqueur. Nick decides the gang can no longer have free drinks, as this is his only job and opportunity to be a responsible adult.

As hard as it may be to believe sometimes, someone (or someones) actually sits down and writes a movie or TV show before you end up seeing it at your local multiplex or on your favorite TV network. The people who do the sitting and the writing are, surprisingly, called writers and, like the Directors, the Golden Globes and the Oscars, they have their own awards show.
This week, the Writers Guild of America, which is the trade group and advocate for writers, announced its nominations for outstanding achievement in feature film and television, radio, news, promotional writing, and graphic animation during the 2009 season to be honored at the upcoming 2010 Writers Guild Awards on February 20, 2010, in Los Angeles and New York.
We realize that these nominations may not be as glamorous as the Golden Globes or the Oscars, but we kinda like writers around here and think they do a pretty important job.

Awards heavyweights "Mad Men," "30 Rock" and "The Office" and buzzed-about newcomer "Modern Family" led the TV field for the 2010 Writers Guild Awards with three nominations each.
AMC's "Mad Men" and NBC's "30 Rock" and "The Office" are in the running for best drama/comedy series, and each received two nominations for episodic writing. "Family" made the cut for best comedy series, best new series and best episodic writing for a comedy series.
ABC's "Family" was one of two new shows to break into the best series categories along with Fox's quirky high-school dramedy "Glee," which faces "Family" in the best comedy series and best new series fields.
While the WGA Awards are still in its nomination phase, Fox's "The Simpsons" can already uncork the champagne. The veteran series is assured to win the animation category after landing all five nomination slots.
