The 2022 Oscars were overshadowed by Will Smith’s violent outburst at Chris Rock, but the show ended on a heartwarming note that passed over many viewers’ heads.
Lady Gaga and a wheelchair-bound Liza Minelli presented the final award of the night, Best Picture, and their delightful banter was in stark contrast to the mood just moments before.
“I’m finally honored to present the final award of the evening with the true showbusiness legend,” Gaga said as she and Minnelli took the stage. “She’s celebrating the 50th anniversary of ‘Cabaret’. Oscar-winning actress, Liza Minnelli.”
Minnelli was cheerful, but seemed to have a bit of trouble reading the teleprompter. “Now we’re gonna show you something else,” Minnelli said before she turned to Gaga and continued, “And then… we’re going to tell you who it is.” Gaga stepped in before Minnelli finished, saying, “we’re going to say who the nominees are right now.

Erich Bergen was staring at his computer screen on the desk in the bedroom of his Harlem apartment. In a couple minutes, the July 21 final installment of Nancy Pelosi’s virtual Hold the House fundraisers for Democratic congressional candidates was going live.
The Zoom grid on Bergen’s monitor included a shot of former President Barack Obama.
Bergen had a quick decision to make. “There was a moment when I was like, ‘Can I tell the president that he needs to be lit better?’” he tells Variety, laughing. “But then I realized, ‘Yes, the president would probably like someone to tell if his lighting was bad.’”
Bergen unmuted himself and asked Obama if he would please shift in his chair for a better shot. The former commander-in-chief obliged and moved closer to his camera.

We haven’t seen the last of Rosie O’Donnell — as a talk show host, that is.
The funny lady tells Variety that the one-night-only return of “The Rosie O’Donnell Show” on Sunday may have just been the beginning of her talk show comeback.
The stand-alone show, broadcast on Broadway.com and the website’s YouTube channel, raised $600,000 for The Actors Fund. Produced by “Madam Secretary” star Erich Bergen, the event featured dozes of guests including Patti LuPone, Ben Platt, Kristin Chenoweth, Billy Porter, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Chita Rivera, Darren Criss and many more.
Variety caught up with O’Donnell on Monday afternoon to talk about her return, why she wasn’t bothered by the show’s audio problems and the possibility of more fundraising shows with guests like Barbra Streisand.
Congrats on a great show. You raised more than $600,000.
It was so fun. We raised so much money. I’m so glad it all worked out.
