In a carriage battle about pay TV’s future, one of the original cable channels became an unexpected flashpoint.
Freeform, the Disney-owned cable channel that caters to younger women, was dropped from Spectrum channel lineups as part of Disney’s landmark deal with Charter Communications. It was no small decision, with Freeform in some 74 million homes at the end of last year, and with Charter’s nearly 15 million cable TV households no longer having access.
“When we looked across the portfolio to try to identify where the greatest value in this deal was to us, we definitely made some trade-offs,” Disney Entertainment co-chairman Dana Walden told The Hollywood Reporter after the Spectrum deal was announced. She noted that channels like Freeform already served as a pipeline of programming for streaming services like Hulu.
And while the deal saw a number of other channels were dropped in the deal, the dropping of Freeform suggests that,...

Warner Bros. Discovery Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics chief marketing officer Tricia Melton is departing the company, along with Cartoon Network and Adult Swim senior VP of marketing and partnerships Jill King. Their exits rep the latest high-profile departures at the conglom as it continues to cut costs and downsize following the April acquisition of Warner Bros. by Discovery.
Melton’s and King’s exits come just days after Warner Bros. TV Group’s animation division was hit hard by cuts — including the merger of development and main production teams for Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios. Both shingles remain, but with a smaller, merged headcount.
Tuesday’s Warner Bros. TV Group cuts impacted 82 staffers; in August, Wbd eliminated 70 jobs at HBO/HBO Max, and in September, 100 employees were let go as part of the downsizing of the company’s ad sales departments. The company is in the...

There probably has been no other television network that has changed its brand identity more times than Freeform. Starting as Cbn Satellite Service 45 years ago, it was subsequently renamed Cbn Cable Network, Cbn Family Channel, The Family Channel, Fox Family Channel and ABC Family until Disney’s younger-skewing network adopted its current Freeform moniker in 2016.
The brand transformation did not end there. Two years after ABC Family became Freeform with a multi-color lettering (Bottom right in the image above), the logo underwent a radical transformation with an emphasis on the two “F”s and the introduction of a tagline, “a little forward” (Top right). Both redesigns were done under former Freeform President Tom Ascheim, who departed in 2020.
Two years into her tenure as Freeform President, Tara Duncan is putting her own stamp with a brand refresh.

Warner Bros. Discovery is heading into a very important week. The company, whose regime just crossed the 100-days-in-office mark, reports its Q2 earnings Thursday, when CEO David Zaslav and his team are expected to lay out more concrete plans for the combined entity than they did on the Q1 earnings call, held just a couple of weeks after the 43 billion Discovery-WarnerMedia merger had been completed. That could include more details about how the two companies’ streaming services, HBO Max and Discovery+, would be combined and under what name; about the company’s theatrical-streaming film strategy; and how a promised 3 billion in savings (a number many expect to go higher) would be achieved.
August had long been rumored to be the month of mass layoffs, with the first wave now expected as early as next week as the honeymoon period for the new regime is coming to an end. This...

In a memo obtained by Variety on Thursday, Warner Bros. Discovery’s head of Hr Adria Alpert Romm reiterated to staffers that they’d be required to work from the office three days per week beginning June 1.
Discovery’s acquisition of WarnerMedia was completed on April 8. On April 26, Deadline reported the company’s first memo mentioning the 3-day requirement — which was unpopular among staffers, especially due to the late notice.
Thursday’s memo did not address this backlash explicitly, though the company does claim to “recognize this is a period of transition and will require some adjustment” for employees that are not already working in the office. Romm also emphasized the “significant advantages to being together” including the “great news” that the on-site facilities including fitness and child care centers have reopened and that employees would be offered free lunch during their first week back.

Ahead of tomorrow’s expected close of the 43 billion WarnerMedia-Discovery merger, the executive leadership structure of the new company has been set.
David Zaslav, CEO of Discovery since 2007, will hold the same title at the combined entity. He has installed J-b Perrette to oversee streaming (in a larger version of the role he had at Discovery), while veteran unscripted programming exec Kathleen Finch will supervise all linear networks. Toby Emmerich, Casey Bloys and Channing Dungey, heads of Warner Bros Pictures, HBO and Warner Bros TV, respectively are all remaining in place. Bruce Campbell, the top distribution exec at Discovery (a crucial function given the billions in carriage fees and complex streaming deals in his purview) has been given a similar job at the new company.
The elevation of Finch, a Scripps Networks Interactive veteran and former network news producer who joined Discovery after the company bought Scripps in 2018, had been widely anticipated.

As Discovery and WarnerMedia are set to close their 43B merger later this week, the attention has been focused mainly on the deal’s ramifications for WarnerMedia’s movie and scripted television businesses. There’s been much industry chatter about the importance of Casey Bloys’ scripted television empire and whether Toby Emmerich continues to oversee The Batman film studio.
The pair, alongside Warner Bros. TV boss Channing Dungey, are expected to report directly to David Zaslav under the company’s new structure, which is set to be unveiled shortly.
However, as high-profile these areas are, they also are additive to Discovery’s business, which is only peripherally involved in scripted TV via the company’s venture with Oprah Winfrey OWN. Meanwhile, it is unscripted television where the two merging companies have the biggest overlap and where combining the assets will require consolidation.

At first bite, Cookie Monster seems like a harmless creature whose only flaw is acting on the needs of his stomach over the recommendations of his brain. In reality, this is a battle-hardened veteran who is set to play a bigger role in one of the media industry’s most intense brawls.
The furry, azure creature, known for his time on “Sesame Street” and even in a commercial for Apple, will soon boost WarnerMedia’s efforts to win new fans of its kids programming, and to keep those who already have a connection from breaking it. WarnerMedia and Sesame Workshop, currently in the middle of a pact that lasts through 2025, are expanding the work the educational-programming company will do for the media giant.
