The US Oscars broadcast might have gone down a treat, but ITV’s coverage in the UK has made the internet a bit cross. What could happen differently next year?
The 96th Academy Awards seems to have gone down rather well. Nobody hit anyone. Every envelope seemed to have the right name in it. The cameras were generally pointing in the right direction. High fives all round, I say.
Unfortunately for ITV – who nabbed the UK broadcast rights off Sky, who’ve held them since 2004 – when the actual ceremony seems to be going down well, it throws the shortfalls of UK coverage into the spotlight.
Jonathan Ross took on hosting duties alongside a panel including The Hobbit star Richard Armitage, radio and documentary presenter Yinka Bokinni, actress Fay Ripley and comedian/critic Ben Bailey Smith. It was, with the best will in the world, a bizarre mix; all four seemed...

Oscars coverage in the UK was free-to-air last night for the first time in two decades but ITV’s coverage was slammed on social media for insensitivity and a lack of critical expertise.
The L.A. ceremony was watched by a peak of almost 1M UK viewers and a 630,000 average from its 10.15 p.m. GMT start time until the early hours of the morning but audiences took to X to make their complaints heard.
Deadline revealed ITV had scooped Oscars rights from Sky last year and the coverage was helmed by British broadcaster Jonathan Ross, who was joined by a panel made up of The Hobbit actor Richard Armitage, radio and documentary presenter Yinka Bokinni, actress Fay Ripley and comedian/critic Ben Bailey Smith.

If last year’s SXSW was driven by panels and events around Web3, NFTs and the metaverse, this year’s has decidedly cooled on the crypto craze and is instead focused on something entirely different: chatbots.
Though chatbots are by no means new technology, the launch last fall of OpenAI’s ChatGPT has sparked renewed interest in — and anxiety over — the use of AI-powered chatbots across multiple industries, in part because of their growing sophistication. Screenwriters in film and TV have become more wary of the impact ChatGPT could have on the scriptwriting process, given that the chatbot is already capable of churning out short scripts; organizations like the Writers Guild of America West say they are actively monitoring the technology “in the event they require additional protections for writers.”
All of these dynamics will be at play in Austin on March 10, the first day of SXSW, when executives and...

Sunday’s 75th Writers Guild of America Awards will conclude the guild season (and a four-guild kudos weekend). Will they portend good things to come at the Oscars for the winners?
“Everything Everywhere All at Once,” written by Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, and “Women Talking,” written by Sarah Polley, are projected to win the Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay prizes, respectively. The caveat, of course, is that neither is facing its top Oscar competition at WGA due to the guild’s eligibility requirements. Martin McDonagh‘s “The Banshees of Inisherin” script, which won the Golden Globe and BAFTA, is Awol in original, as is Oscar nominee “Triangle of Sadness.” And BAFTA’s adapted screenplay champ “All Quiet on the Western Front,” written by Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell, is ineligible, along with Oscar nominee “Living.”

Ozy Media founder and CEO Carlos Watson has been arrested on fraud charges.
Watson’s arrest comes after his former Ozy Media partner, Samir Rao, pleaded guilty to fraud charges and agreed to cooperate with federal officials. In a related but separate move, the SEC charged Watson, and Ozy with defrauding investors of $50 million.
““As alleged, Carlos Watson is a con man whose business strategy was based on outright deceit and fraud – he ran Ozy as a criminal organization rather than as a reputable media company,” said U.S. Attorney Breon Peace said in a statement.
According to a copy of the criminal charges, Watson, Rao and other Ozy executives “engaged in a scheme to defraud Ozy’s investors, potential investors, potential acquirers, lenders and potential lenders through material misrepresentations and omissions about, among other things, Ozy’s historical and projected financial results, Ozy’s debts, Ozy’s audience numbers,...

After just one season, "Andor" has solidified itself in the upper echelon of "Star Wars" projects. The series pushes the beloved franchise forward in a fresh, grounded direction. From its titular character to the desperate world of rebels around him, "Andor" is a mature departure from the typical fanfare and is unlike anything we've seen in the galaxy far, far away. A part of what makes the series so engaging is the bevy of characters that bring the heights of "Star Wars" back down to a planetary surface. The mundane nature of the show is best characterized by the Imperial forces that threaten the rebellion, including a particularly devious officer in Lieutenant Supervisor Blevin, played by Ben Bailey Smith.
Through Blevin, Bailey Smith is tasked with helping to bring an Empire to life that's far more subtle in how it rules the galaxy with an iron fist. He often clashes...

Charlotte Wells' saga about a father/daughter relationship, Aftersun, was the big winner at tonight's British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs), winning in seven of the 16 categories in which it had been nominated: Best British Film, Best Director, Best Debut Director, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Music Supervision. Its toughest competition came from Blue Jean, Georgia Oakley's drama about a teacher who fears losing her job after a pupil threatens to expose her sexuality.
There was more joy for Scottish short Too Rough, which is now Oscar-qualified twice over, having also secured victory at the Scottish BAFTAs. Director Sean Lionadh had previously told Eye For Film that he felt entitled to awards after the effort involved in making the film, but he has nevertheless expressed surprise and delight at its success.

BuzzFeed, the internet news site that popularized the listicle and broke major political and entertainment news, is the subject of an upcoming documentary from Kelsey Darragh, a former staffer and filmmaker.
The film, which is currently in production, is backed by producer and financier Bright West Entertainment, which previously made “Subject” and “Sirens.” The company has partnered with the Emmy Award-winning production team at Campfire Studios, makers of Hulu’s “WeWork” and HBO Max’s “Low Country,” on the project.
The filmmaker say they plan to track BuzzFeed’s “rapid ascent and dominance in the early days of viral video,” but it’s not all clicks and soaring traffic. The film will also look at the “chaotic and often criticized workplace environment” at BuzzFeed. The company went public in 2021 and its stock has had plummeted more than 80 since then.

One of the more interesting characters on "Andor" is Dedra Meero, the Imperial Security Bureau officer played by Denise Gough. When we first meet Dedra, the audience learns to identify with her through the challenges she faces in her job. It just so happens that she works for the Empire, traditionally the villains of the "Star Wars" universe. Yet "Andor" is already a show built around a Rebel "hero" whose first act when we met him in "Rogue One" was to kill an injured informant in cold blood. The series has continued to explore the gray areas in-between the conventional, clear-cut, black-or-white divisions of "Star Wars."
Even in the the original "Star Wars" trilogy, there were Imperial officers you could root for, like Admiral Piett (Kenneth Colley), if only because their position was so precarious at all times. One wrong move and Darth Vader was liable to permanently relieve them...

"Andor" is a story of galactic reckoning. Week by week, we've been watching the slow construction of the Rebel Alliance through the eyes of a young and disillusioned Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) caught in the middle of it. It largely succeeds in its departure from the "Star Wars" status quo by focusing on the political power plays of the galaxy. While Mon Mothma (Genevieve O'Reilly) bravely seeks financing and diplomatic support within a corrupted Coruscant senate, Luthen (Stellan Skarsgård) is making cold and calculated moves to martyr the lives lost in Aldhani.
Meanwhile, there's yet another recurring thread that we've been following over the course of the last eight episodes of "Andor," and that's the pathetic chase for Imperial validation by Syril Karn (Kyle Soller). After his complete failure to capture and apprehend Cassian for his murder of two Imperial officers on Ferrix, he's been typing away at his job...

The long-anticipated news startup Semafor launches on Tuesday with a team of prominent journalists producing a mix of scoops, analysis and newsletters, but its most unique feature may be in the way that it presents its stories.
Stories are broken down to different components, starting with the actual news, followed by the reporter’s view; a disagreeing view; an alternate, often international perspective; and a look at what is next;
The format, called Semaform, was a chief goal of co-founders Justin Smith, former CEO of Bloomberg Media, and Ben Smith, former New York Times columnist and editor-in-chief of BuzzFeed News, as Semafor enters a busy and crowded digital news space.
“We’re sort of thinking a lot about what consumers respond to, what do they want, what bothers people about this black box as a news article,” said Ben Smith. “We are trying to strip it down to its elements...

When you think of the Imperial Army, you might think of a fascist and ultra-serious army, and you wouldn't be wrong in assuming so. However, if "Andor" is anything to go by, the Imperial Army is also full of petty losers. We have already witnessed Syril Karn (Kyle Soller) and the pathetic smugness he carries, but this latest episode has seemingly proven that everyone in a high-ranking Imperial position just seems miserable. Guess you have to be if you're wanting to conquer and colonize entire planets, no matter the cost.
And there is nothing more miserable in this latest episode than how Imperial members act towards each other in everyday conversation. Sure, we've already talked about that one time Karn interrupted a subordinate's lunch break so he could fuel his obsession with our titular character. However, that was just the tip of the iceberg. We got our first real glimpse...

Darcy says the new Reliable newsletter will have a “more concise format” though it will “continue to tackle issues relating to newsrooms, partisan media, social media, podcasts, and streaming services.” It will also “continue to pay close attention to industry titans who are reshaping our information environment.”
But it will have an entirely new “polished” visual identity, from the logo to the structure of the newsletter, which will be organized around specific sections so readers can quickly find the section they are looking for. CNN says that the refreshed newsletter is based on feedback they have...

CNN has no plans to replace Brian Stelter’s just-canceled “Reliable Sources” with another media-focused show in the foreseeable future, TheWrap has learned.
“There are a number of programs in the concept and development phases, and it’s possible media coverage will be an element of a show,” a network insider told TheWrap, “but no indication that an exclusively media beat show is part of the plan.”
A CNN spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.
Experts say that the cancellation of the show — launched after attacks on media coverage of the Gulf War in 1993 — exacerbates the dearth of mainstream media criticism given media critic Margaret Sullivan’s recent departure from The Washington Post and columnist Ben Smith’s exit from The New York Times

When Brian Stelter signed off from the last installment of CNN’s “Reliable Sources” Aug. 21, the number of mainstream vehicles analyzing an increasingly confusing media industry shrank even further.
Stelter bid farewell the same day Washington Post media columnist Margaret Sullivan ended her run — asking such notables as Carl Bernstein and Jeffrey Goldberg on air whether the press is doing enough to cover topics ranging from disinformation to climate change. The lead story of his hour was a dire one: his program’s own cancellation after three decades. “It’s going to be on you to hold CNN accountable,” Stelter told viewers in the show’s waning moments, later adding: “The free world needs a reliable source.”
Why did CNN terminate a show that has been on its Sunday schedule since the early 1990s? Since acquiring the company once known as WarnerMedia, executives at new corporate parent Warner Bros. Discovery...

The horror! Cried early reviews. A travesty of a Jane Austen adaptation! Then followed some more level-headed takes which didn’t find themselves quite as allergic to Persuasion‘s modern-sensibilities-in-period-rom-com approach. Now, after the fuss, Netflix audiences are making up their own minds. If you’re among them and are planning to spend/have spent just shy of two hours with the cast below, here are some of the places you may recognise them from..

Netflix’s Persuasion starring Dakota Johnson as Anne Elliot and Cosmo Jarvis as Capt. Wentworth has become a very controversial adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel since debuting on Netflix, with many critics and writers already debating the pros and the cons of the movie. However, in my personal opinion as an Afro-Caribbean American Austen fan, there has not been enough discussion of the harm racists and gatekeepers have done with the way they have engaged in discussing this movie.
I personally experienced the wrath of Austen fandom racists during “PineappleGate” and know that the debates over the merits of director Carrie Cracknell’s Persuasion are hiding deeper issues. They also repeat the same patterns.
While the vast majority of good faith critiques by professional critics, as well as fan reactions, stuck to discussing elements of Persuasion that were separate from race, chatter on Facebook and other social media sites...

Jane Austen knew a thing or two about complicated women and the way they move through the world. The author’s iconic bibliography — from “Pride and Prejudice” and “Emma” to “Sense and Sensibility,” and those are the just the English class curriculum bangers — has always hinged on indelible heroines and their Regency-era attempts to get their lives in order. These stories are both beholden to their time and place and undeniably universal in their concerns and charms.
Austen’s books have inspired all manner of adaptations on both stage and screen, from the faithful (Ang Lee’s luminous “Sense and Sensibility”) to the lightly loosened and even the straight-up free-wheeling (“Bridget Jones’s Diary”) to the mostly inane (“Pride and Prejudice and Zombies”). Austen’s books incisively depict a specific time in British life, but her keen understanding of human interactions and desires can happily be transplanted to a range of stories.

Classic story of a young woman talked out of marrying her true love is turned into a smirking, heavy-handed romcom
Jane Austen’s calm, subtle novel gets the Fleabag treatment in this smirking romcom; it has more wrong notes than an inebriated squadron of harpists, including everything but a last-minute rush in a barouche to Bath airport. Our demure protagonist Anne Elliot is forever doing supercilious takes and wry monologues to camera, taking despairing swigs from a bottle of red wine in private, occasionally nursing a quirky pet rabbit, and at the end (unforgivably) gives us a wink to seal the deal of our adoringly complicit approval. The final wedding scene invents for us a cutesy comic twist involving two distinct characters whose status and purpose this film gets very wrong.

The host of the highest-rated nightly cable television show made the comments Thursday in an interview with Semafor editor-in-chief Ben Smith.
“When I screw it up, I correct it immediately if it’s a factual error. If my views on things change, I say that. I don’t pretend I didn’t used to think that. I admit it,” he said. “I mean, it’s hard for me to lie about it anyways because we have YouTube. But I, just as a matter of conscience, try to do that anyways.”
Carlson contended that viewers might notice him “making mistakes,” but never “lying on purpose.”
