Jason Reitman directs Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin in his latest, Labor Day. Here's our review.
To the best of our knowledge, director Jason Reitman hasn't ever spent a long bank holiday weekend in the Midlands. Having done so many times ourselves, it's eerie just how he manages to capture the monotony of doing so in his latest film, Labor Day (an adaptation of Joyce Maynard's book, to which he's written the screenplay too). Coming on the heels of the woefully underappreciated Young Adult (both Charlize Theron and Patton Oswalt could, with some justification, lodge appeals with Oscar voters), it's another dark drama, albeit a bit more of a contained one.
The set up sees Kate Winslet starring as Adele, a woman living with her 13-year old son, Henry. Adele is in a bad place, a single mom battling with depression, and ahead...

I don't know where to begin with Jason Reitman's Labor Day. Adapted from the novel by Joyce Maynard, you could have told me it was a Nicholas Sparks adaptation, directed by Lasse Hallstrom and I wouldn't have second guessed the statement. I can't tell if Reitman is having fun with his audience and has actually made a parody of a Sparks adaptation or if he takes this schlock seriously. Either way, it doesn't work. To begin, Labor Day has something of an identity crisis as it's unsure which character it wants to focus on. The voice over that introduces the film is read by Tobey Maguire playing an older Henry Wheeler, the young 13-year-old (Gattlin Griffith) seen throughout the entirety of the film, and son to Adele (Kate Winslet), a woman that has retreated within herself forcing Henry to be the man of the house. Adele was left by...

Were it better, Labor Day might well strike a seductive chord for romantics: a dreamy escaped convict hovers over a mother and son he’s taken hostage over a holiday weekend. One so full of love, cooking, and romance, it will change their lives forever. But the film, based on the Joyce Maynard novel, is so trapped in a dreary Nicolas Sparks-style cliche-ridden universe that we know the entire plot from the start to the over-sentimental climax. Labor Day stars Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin, two usually solid actors, but they’re wasted as Labor Day neither raises the pulse nor unintentionally entertains and while some may eat this mush up, most will see it as a tremendous disappointment from writer/director Jason Reitman (of Juno and Up In The Air fame).

The South Coast Repertory's production of "The Fantasticks" and Doma Theatre Company's production of "Dreamgirls" lead the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle (Ladcc) Awards nominations with a half dozen each. The 2013 nominees, announced Monday, also included Center Theatre Group's production of the "Scottsboro Boys"—a season favorite—and "The Nether," which was Ctg's standout production last year. At the Ovation Awards in November, it took home a playwriting honor for Jennifer Haley as well as awards for scenic, sound, costume, and lighting design, and featured actress and actor for Brighid Fleming’s performance as Iris and Dakin Matthews as Doyle. The Ladcc has it up for similar honors, although neither Fleming or Matthews is nominated in the performance categories. The standouts in the lead performance include Constance Jewell Lopez, who's nominated for her turn in "Dreamgirls," and Mary Bridget Davies, who's garnered a nod for her performance in the Pasadena...

Looking forward to a new year of movies and attempting to come up with a list of films I'm most anticipating is never a simple proposition. In compiling this year's list of fifty there were 230 film titles I looked at, some a little more seriously than others, but nonetheless, it wasn't a small list of films. As a result, not everything could make the list. Note: I have included a navigation to browse all five lists directly below as well as at the end of this post for easy navigation. Most Anticipated 2013 Navigation #1-10 | #11-20 | #21-30 | #31-40 | #41-50 Some of the films just missing the top fifty include Zal Batmanglij's The East, Spike Jonze's Her starring Joaquin Phoenix, the horror film You're Next, which first premiered in 2011 and is finally being released this year, and Devil's Knot as the story of the West Memphis Three continues, only this...

Though you’d be forgiven for thinking that Up In The Air / Young Adult director Jason Reitman had already started on his next project, Labor Day, you would be wrong. He’ll be whirring the cameras this month and Tobey Maguire will be stepping in front of them.Labor Day will be based on Reitman’s own adaptation of Joyce Maynard’s novel, which focuses on the story of Adele (Kate Winslet) and son Henry (Gattlin Griffith). On a day out, the pair picks up a stranger, Frank (Josh Brolin) who turns out to be an escaped convict. While hiding out with the stressed single mother and her child, he teaches the boy some life lessons across a five-day Labor Day weekend (celebrated around the first Monday in September, for those of a non-American persuasion).Maguire will be narrating the film and shooting scenes as the adult Henry once he...

An unexpected, late-in-the-game, and entirely welcome addition has been made to Jason Reitman‘s Labor Day, with Deadline reporting that Tobey Maguire will both narrate and give an onscreen turn in next year’s drama.
Some out-of-nowhere stuff that I’ll gladly take, though his position — that being an older version of the main character (primarily played by Gattlin Griffith) — probably won’t require much in the way of onscreen work; that end of things may only amount to what’s essentially a cameo. As with the Joyce Maynard novel upon which it’s based, Labor Day really centers on the 13-year-old Henry Wheeler, who, along with his mother (Kate Winslet), provides solace to an escaped convict (Josh Brolin). With the man’s presence, events come to unfurl over the course of this titular weekend that “will shape them for the rest of their lives.”

With "Young Adult" barely out of our minds, lensing is excitingly already underway on Jason Reitman's next directorial effort, an adaptation of Joyce Maynard's coming-of-age story "Labor Day." The project has now added a trio of talent with Alexie Gilmore ("World's Greatest Dad"), Lucas Hedges ("Moonrise Kingdom") and Brooke Smith ("Grey's Anatomy") all joining in unnamed supporting roles. The monthly Labor Day casting is upon us, with THR having learned that Lucas Hedges (Moonrise Kingdom), Micah Fowler, and Alexie Gilmore (World’s Greatest Dad) are signed and ready to go for Jason Reitman‘s next. The currently-shooting project stars Gattlin Griffith as Henry Wheeler, a boy looking after his desperate, dispirited mother, Adele (Kate Winslet), and whose life changes (for the better?) when an escaped convict (Josh Brolin) shacks up with them over Labor Day weekend.
Hedges will be seen as Richard, the son of Alexie‘s character, Marjorie, who’s also Henry’s stepmorth. Fowler — who, from what I can (or can’t) gather, is entirely new to film — has found himself with the role of “Barry, the son of Adele’s friend Evelyn.” James Van Der Beek, Clark Gregg, Tom Lipinski, and Brighid Fleming are co-starring in Labor Day, which will be opening sometime in 2013. Now that The Avengers is a certified phenomenon, it’s safe to assume that everyone involved has their pick of movie projects from here on out and Clark Gregg, Agent Coulson to you Marvel movie nerds, is jumping into bed with the director of Young Adult.
THR reports that Gregg has joined the cast of Labor Day, the next film from director Jason Reitman. The movie, which Reitman adapted from the Joyce Maynard novel of the same name, is a road trip drama about a mother (Kate Winslet) and her young son (Gattlin Griffith) who end up in the company of an escaped convict named Frank (Josh Brolin) over Labor Day Weekend. Luckily for them, the convict is more of a “life lessons” sort of guy and over the three days he and the young boy bond instead of, you know, stabbing him and his mother to death or something.

Jason Reitman had his stars for Labor Day, Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin, nearly a year ago. Today he's getting closer to fully staffed with the definite casting of young actress Brighid Fleming (Gerard Butler's Gamer) and the potential wooing of James Van Der Beek. The film revolves around Winslet as a divorced single mother dealing with Brolin's escaped convict. The Hollywood Reporter writes that Van Der Beek is being eyed as "a police officer investigating a missing person’s case," so that could be an actual role in the story! The actor has an in with Reitman thanks to his Emilio Estevez–channeling part in a live Breakfast Club reading Reitman put together last autumn.

James Van Der Beek ("Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23"), Brighid Fleming ("Gamer") and Gattlin Griffith ("Changeling") are in negotiations to join the cast of Jason Reitman’s "Labor Day" for Indian Paintbrush and Paramount says the trades.
The story centers on a boy (Griffith) and his depressed divorced mother (Kate Winslet) who, during a Labor Day Weekend, meet a stranger (Josh Brolin) and offer him a ride. The man turns out to be an escaped convict who ends up teaching the boy life lessons.
Van Der Beek will play a police officer investigating a missing person’s case. Fleming plays the object of Griffith's affection and a girl with much more awareness of the way the world works than he has. Tom Lipinski and Maika Monroe also star.
Helen Estabrook, Lianne Halfon and Russell Smith are producing this adaptation of Joyce Maynard's novel.

While Jason Reitman was running the gauntlet for his awards darling — or, so we initially thought — Up in the Air, I was instantly excited by the prospect of Labor Day, which even he, at that point in time, figured would be his follow-up to the Oscar-nominated George Clooney-starrer. Obviously, that turned out not to be the case, as Diablo Cody‘s Young Adult script — loved by some, loathed by others, moderately respected by yours truly — landed in front of him and refused to let go.
He’s now finally back in the Labor Day saddle, though, with Josh Brolin and Kate Winslet set to headline. I confess that I couldn’t help but leaf through Joyce Maynard‘s source material back when the fabrics of this project were first hinted at, though seeing as how that was nearly three years ago, I’ve forgotten a good deal of the book — indeed,...

Could this mark the final stage of a comeback for James Van Der Beek? The "Dawson's Creek" star hasn't quite matched the post-show success of Michelle Williams, Joshua Jackson or even Katie Holmes, but 2012 seems to be a bit of a turning point. He's a regular on the new ABC series "Don't Trust The B---- In Apt. 23" and despite roles in a string of less than notable movies over the past few years (and that's not counting his infamous deleted scenes from Todd Solodnz's "Storytelling"), he's now notched a role that will find him acting opposite Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin. Not bad.
THR reports that Van Der Beek has come on board Jason Reitman's "Labor Day." Based on Joyce Maynard's book of the same name, the film is set on a late summer Labor Day holiday weekend in the 1980s. And it opens with a divorced, depressed...

Waylon Bacon is going home again. Bacon, a graduate of Albany High School, will be showing his latest demented masterpiece, Help Wanted, and participating in a post-screening Q&A at the 2nd annual Albany Film Festival, which takes place on March 3.
Help Wanted is a horror comedy about the world’s worst job: Processing the dead victims of hit men and other hired killers. It’s a sick, twisted and absolutely hilarious epic short film. Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film reviewed it back in 2010, calling it “funny and frightening.”
Joining Bacon on-stage will be filmmaker Hoku Uchiyama, another Albany High grad, with his own short film, Rose, a rural American ghost story.
The Albany Film Festival is screening primarily short films from Noon to 8:00 p.m., kicking things off with the absolutely charming The Squash by Bobby Young.
However, there will be two special feature films on hand.

Think you know what to expect from Gerard Butler's upcoming scifi actioner Game? Think again... we've been hearing rumors of some strangeness going on behind the scenes so we went looking for proof. Well we found some strange images indeed.
Between Hookah smocking ravers, apocalyptic landscapes, and a villainous Michael C. Hall hanging out with little Brighid Fleming, it seems like Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylora a putting together a very surreal affair. We've got images of Ludicrous, Butler, John Leguizamo, Michael C Hall, and loads of weirdness in our ongoing Game gallery after the break.
