Awkwardly bridging the gap between “My Fair Lady” retelling and an episode of “Southern Charm,” Justin and Christian Long’s directorial debut, “Lady of the Manor,” is both a southern-friend romantic comedy and “Casper”-esque tale of ghostly friendship. Mining broad comedy out of the story of a wayward stoner Hannah (Melanie Lynskey— proving that she owed the Longs a favor) who attempts to reform her lazy ways, with the help of the spectral Lady Wadsworth (Judy Greer – essentially playing an antebellum Judy Greer), with a love triangle thrown in to pad out the runtime, the Longs’ debut film may be Frankensteined together from disparate genres.

Though Lady of the Manor, written and directed by brothers Justin Long and Christian Long, centers on the meeting of a Reconstruction-era ghost (Judy Greer) and a modern-day pothead (Melanie Lynskey), that’s not the most surprising thing about it. No, that would be how tedious and misguided the film turns out to be. Despite the enjoyable chemistry between its leads and a promisingly offbeat premise, the buddy comedy does a better job of betraying its filmmakers’ lack of imagination than it does conjuring any real laughs.

The directorial debut of brothers Justin and Christian Long (who also co-write) hinges on a pedophilia joke. Let’s get that out in the open because you’re either the type of person who can chalk it up to “good humor” and carry on or the type who checks the calendar, realizes it is indeed 2021, and decides to spend their time on anything else. It’s not like Lady of the Manor consciously deals with the gag beyond an ill-advised decision to make a callback like it’s no big deal either. The Longs put their plot in motion on its back, push it aside to make room for a 1990s-era douchebag and multiple fart jokes (the latter do deliver some legitimately good laughs), and ultimately revive it as a parting gift.

"Did you just come into my room to fart?" What a line. Lionsgate has released an official trailer for a kooky comedy titled Lady of the Manor, written and directed by brothers Christian Long & Justin Long, making their feature directorial debut together. The film follows a stoner who, after getting a gig as a tour guide in a historic manor, befriends the ghost of the former lady of the residence. "We really love buddy comedies from the '80s and '90s... We realized it was such a good opportunity for that type of buddy comedy, but with two women, and we just felt like we hadn't seen that in that way." Melanie Lynskey and Judy Greer star in this offbeat buddy comedy creation, with a full cast including Justin Long, Luis Guzmán, Patrick Duffy, Nick Morgulis, and Ryan Phillippe. This doesn't look like the most interesting or humorous take on this concept,...

In the internet age, it's hard not to Google search or Facebook stalk potential love interests in the hopes of finding some good info that you can use to your wooing advantage. In the new trailer for "A Case of You," Sam (Justin Long) scours the internet profiles of barista Birdie (Evan Rachel Wood) to learn her likes and hobbies so that he can transform himself into the perfect match. When Birdie falls for him, Sam has to keep up the act, or risk her finding out who he really is, which for some reason is a bad thing. Though the film seems to follow the usual romantic comedy trope of "I'm not who I said I was", albeit with a bit of a creepy stalker vibe, at least Long and Wood look like they've got some chemistry. And hey, is that Peter Dinklage in a comedic supporting role? The...

However, when he creates a fake online profile that hits all the right notes for Birdie, she falls for this fake persona, and of course he has to keep up the act to keep her. Director Kat Coiro‘s (L!fe Happens) latest feature, A Case of You will undoubtedly enter the pantheon of “Manic Pixie Dream Girl” movies. Justin Long heard the news about Joseph Gordon-Levitt and realized that he needs to catch up. No, this isn’t a directing job, but Variety tells us that the young actor has made his screenwriting debut on A Case of You; Evan Rachel Wood, the great Peter Dinklage, Keir O’Donnell, and Busy Phillips have signed to co-star.
Set to be directed by Kat Coiro the (I assume this is the genre) comedy — co-written with O’Donnell and Christian Long — centers on “a young writer who tries to impress a girl he meets online with an embellished profile, but finds himself in a real mess when she falls for him and he has to keep up the act.” L&L are producing, alongside Long, O’Donnell, Holly Wiersma, Logan Levy, and Jessie Kennedy; production has begun in New York, which might make a Sundance 2013 premiere possible. But that’s just a guess,...

Justin Long has been a working actor for over a decade now but never exactly what anyone would describe as a powerhouse, so he's doing what any actor with even minimal smarts and long-term planning skills would do: going into production. Along with partners Keir O'Donnell (an actor known from United States of Tara and Edding Crashers) and Christian Long (his brother), he's formed I'm So Sorry Productions. According to Deadline they're hitting the ground running, selling a half-hour sitcom to CBS, shopping around a rom-com spec script, and starting an online series for College Humor. Long would only be acting in the feature script, titled A Case of You and something I will automatically see because the title is a Joni MItchell reference. Long would play a guy who woos a girl after carefully consulting her internet dating profile, but eventually has to come clean and actually act like...

Exclusive: Justin Long has formed I'm So Sorry Productions with partners Keir O'Donnell and Christian Long. There's no apology needed for their early progress: they've sold a half-hour sitcom to CBS and CBS Television Studios in a preemptive deal; they've got producers Joe Roth and Palak Patel shopping their feature spec script A Case Of You as a star vehicle for Long; and they've sold the online series Fanfare to College Humor and will begin shooting episodes next month of a series that recreates bizarre encounters between fans and celebrities. The CBS sitcom is about two high school science teachers--an endearing degenerate and a socially awkward misanthrope--who live together and have to balance contrasting lifestyles and school jobs. Long and his partners will write and exec produce. Electus' Ben Silverman and Principato-Young's Paul Young and Peter Principato will also be exec producers. The feature spec written by the trio...
