When “Expats” showrunner and director Lulu Wang was penning the script for episode 4, she featured a scene where Hilary gets trapped in the elevator with her mother. But little did she know, actress Sarayu Blue was claustrophobic. “That’s my biggest fear,” Blue says.
Wang tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast that she learned about Blue’s unease when the production, which shot during Covid, was in quarantine. “She had to be stuck in a hotel, a glass box for 21 days, so there were a lot of conversations about the panic, and it was really challenging,” says Wang. “I thought, ‘Oh, that’s going to be fun because I’ve written a whole episode where she’s stuck in an elevator.”
On this episode, Wang and Blue discuss their Prime Video series, and the reactions they’ve received from fans and family. Before that, the Roundtable discusses what’s going on with “Shogun,...

After nearly 40 years in Park City, the Sundance Film Festival may be pulling up stakes.
With its current contract expiring after the 2026 festival, organizers of the iconic Robert Redford-founded indie film shindig in the Utah mountain town said Wednesday that they have opened a bid process for a possible move to a new city. As Deadline exclusively reported last summer, Sundance has quietly been considering a change for a while.
At the same time, with the 2025 and 2026 festivals still set for Park City, we hear the incumbent location remains in the mix. To that end, Sundance is also exploring a renewal of its latest 13-year-old deal with the pricey resort town if a strong enough local offer is placed on the table.
The verdict to open the process now, with more than six months to go before any renewal with Park City had to be decided upon, was signed...

Awkwafina rose to fame with her idiosyncratic, trademark comedic stylings. Then she wowed us all with her against-type performance in Lulu Wang‘s “The Farewell,” which very nearly earned her an Oscar nomination back in 2019. She delivers another quiet, subdued role in the Hulu telefilm “Quiz Lady,” which could well reap her a career-first Emmy bid for acting.
Awkwafina plays the reserved Anne, who must compete on the game show she is obsessed with alongside her loud, abrasive, estranged sister Jenny (Sandra Oh) in order to pay off their mom’s gambling debts. The result is a heartwarming comedy that is one of the sweet treats of the year. Critics loved the movie and singled out Awkafina for particular praise.

Exclusive: Big Beach, the production company behind Starz’s Vida and Facebook’s Sorry For Your Loss, has landed television rights to Alexandra Tanner’s debut novel Worry.
Worry follows two siblings-turned-roommates, one a 28-year-old media employee, navigating an absurd world on the verge of calamity. The book has been described as a “Seinfeldian” novel of existentialism and sisterhood.
Lesley Arfin, co-creator of Netflix comedy series Love, which starred Gillian Jacobs, has signed on to write the pilot episode alongside Tanner.
Worry was released last week by Scribner and was described by the New York Times as a “fabulous comic novel of young adult angst.”
Set in 2019, it follows 28-year-old Jules Gold — anxious, artistically frustrated, and internet-obsessed — who has been living alone in the apartment she once shared with the man she thought she’d marry when her younger sister Poppy comes to crash. Indefinitely. Poppy, a year and a...

In 2017, Sofia Coppola made history after becoming the second female filmmaker to win Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival for The Beguiled, starring, the Queen of Cannes, Nicole Kidman. On this historic occasion, the actress vowed to continue supporting women in the industry, which has been largely dominated by men since its very inception.
While other major A-listers have also spoken in support of female filmmakers, including Natalie Portman, it has been the Eyes Wide Shut Star, who has held her promise.

Nicole Kidman recently earned immense praise for her new Prime Video series Expats. The series, based on the novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee focuses on the tragic tale of a mother, Margaret, whose son goes missing in a Hong Kong nighttime market excursion. Kidman revealed that the subject matter of the series made it tough for her to pull off the job and certain scenes even forced her to pause to grasp everything.
Expats (2024)
Speaking about one painful scene in Expats, we see Nicole Kidman’s Margaret laughing at a very morbid situation. Tom Cruise’s former wife replied that she based that scene on her tendency to laugh at inappropriate times. She explained that she needs this moment to keep her alive in devastating moments of grief.

Additionally, Johnny Berchtold and Roberto Montesinos have joined the cast as series regulars with Daniel David Stewart set to recur.
Berchtold plays Richard Beck, a sensitive and artistic college student who lost his mother when he was young and is the only son of businessman Zachary Beck (Anthony Michael Hall). Five years ago, he was the victim of a traumatic kidnapping that left him mutilated.

Pachinko. Godzilla. And Now Shōgun. Anna Sawai Is Still Processing the ‘Strange’ Moment She’s Having
Anna Sawai doesn’t seem to do small projects. At least not in the past few years.
Coming out of a supporting role in the BBC Two crime drama Girl/Haji, the New Zealand-born Japanese actress (and onetime vocalist in the girl group Faky) was cast in Pachinko, Apple TV+’s sweeping, multi-generational and multi-lingual adaptation of the Min Jee Lee novel, which reportedly cost $13 million per episode. Mercy is one of the female characters in Lulu Wang’s Expats that represents the current generation of young women, who are as clueless about their work and personal lives as Mercy is the youngest of the three women and one of the leads of the show. Her life was a canvas at that juncture, which she could paint the way she wanted. Mercy sadly had not found her calling yet, which is why she was living in Hong Kong doing meager jobs while she held a degree from an Ivy League American university.
Mercy was a Korean American woman who had spent most of her life in America, and she remained clueless about her roots and culture. Mercy had a lot of issues while growing up, and just like Hillary, her relationship with her mother was not very ideal. At many junctures, she had mentioned how complicated her conversations with the mother had become,...

Lulu Wang’s Expats throws light on the people living in Hong Kong and the kind of culture shock they face upon meeting the locals. Lulu Wang’s Expats was a female-centric show that painted a broad picture of the kind of turmoil women go through daily. Hillary was an upstairs neighbor of Margaret. She lived with her husband, David, and many assumed she led a rich and peaceful life. On the outside, her marriage was glossy like a magazine cover, while on the inside, all the pages of her life were crumbling. The series began with Hillary being in denial about her marriage, and pretending everything was smooth sailing. This was probably the result of years of conditioning by her family to make the marriage work. David could not keep up with the façade of their marriage and walked out.
Hillary worked as a corporate executive in Hong Kong, away from her family in Los Angeles. Her marriage began to show cracks when David suddenly wanted to have kids. Hillary married him because both did not want children.

In the series finale of Prime Video’s Expats, Margaret, Hilary and Mercy finally came to terms with the weight of their individual traumas, and the complicated and sometimes brutal roles they played in each others’ lives.

If you want to tell a story about expats in Hong Kong or anywhere else, one of the problems you’ll run into is that they necessarily have enough wealth to insulate their lives from a lot of the forces that loom over the locals — like politics and time. The three protagonists of “Expats” are all varying degrees of privileged and enmeshed in varying levels of grief that make them, as we all are, both victims of and perpetrators to the people around them. Director Lulu Wang, though, finds a wonderful cinematic answer to the question of how to connect the Prime Video series’ expatriates to the world around them, even if they can’t quite see it.

There’s a very specific emotion I felt while watching Expats, Lulu Wang’s drama series about American expatriates in Hong Kong: frustration.
There was also admiration, of course, and enjoyment and suspense, but at some point, while watching the performances of Sarayu Blue and Brian Tee, the indignation set in: We could have been seeing them do this kind of work this whole time?
It’s a reaction that uniquely arises when you finally witness the full potential of someone whose face (if not name) has been a familiar presence on screens for quite a while, but almost always in a supporting role where they are serving the story — just not their story. These artists tend to disproportionately hail from historically excluded backgrounds, often cast to make an ensemble diverse but usually relegated to bridesmaid and never the bride. In the US and Europe, a combination of figurehead film-makers allied with community partners really seems to work
One of LA’s loveliest cinemas – the huge, sentinel Village Theater in Westwood - has been bought by Jason Reitman, Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, Lulu Wang, Chloé Zhao, Guillermo del Toro, Alexander Payne, Alfonso Cuarón, Ryan Coogler, Bradley Cooper, Gina Prince-Bythewood and lots of other film-makers.
The news has a hint of early Hollywood about it when, in 1919, four very different film-makers – Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and Dw Griffith – threw their hats into the industrial ring to found the United Artists Corporation movie studio.

The group includes JJ Abrams, Judd Apatow, Damien Chazelle, Chris Columbus, Ryan Coogler, Bradley Cooper, Alfonso Cuarón, Jonathan Dayton, Guillermo del Toro, Valerie Faris, Hannah Fidell, Alejandro González Iñárritu, James Gunn, Sian Heder, Rian Johnson, Gil Kenan, Karyn Kusama, Justin Lin, Phil Lord, David Lowery, Christopher McQuarrie, Chris Miller, Christopher Nolan, Alexander Payne, Todd Phillips, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Jay Roach, Seth Rogen, Emma Seligman, Brad Silberling, Steven Spielberg, Emma Thomas, Denis Villeneuve, Lulu Wang, and Chloé Zhao.
“I’ve been coming to Westwood for as long as I can remember,” remarked Reitman. “When the Village Theater went on the market, I had visions of how quickly the National Theater became a block of condos. I immediately made an offer and hoped my fellow directors would join me on this adventure.

[This story contains spoilers through the fifth episode of Expats, “Central.”]
A show called Expats understandably focuses on the cosmopolitan lives of those privileged enough to make their fortunes abroad, and for most of the Amazon limited series’ six episodes, it does just that, following neighbors Margaret (Nicole Kidman) and Hilary (Sarayu Blue). The two wealthy women live in Hong Kong’s tony Victoria Peak neighborhood, as well as Mercy (Ji-young Yoo), the American drifter who complicates both of their lives. To recap: Mercy was tasked with watching Margaret’s two sons during a night market outing when the younger one disappeared. A year later, Gus is still missing, and Mercy is having an affair with Hilary’s husband, David (Jack Huston).
But the fifth episode drifts away from the trio of protagonists to focus on characters that have heretofore existed in the background, sometimes literally. “Central” (each episode of Expats is named after a geographically significant area in...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for “Central,” the fifth episode of “Expats,” now streaming on Prime Video.
Lulu Wang’s “Expats” steps into feature-length territory for this week’s episode, which focuses on the working class women by diving into the lives of the helpers, Essie (Ruby Ruiz) and Puri (Amelyn Pardenilla). The story steps away from the wealthy world of Margaret (Nicole Kidman) and Hillary (Sarayu Blue), instead following Essie and Puri on their day off, unwinding from their hectic work week.
Poor Essie has spent much of the series fraught with guilt over the disappeareance of Margaret’s son, Gus, blaming herself for not being there the night the young boy vanished at the night market. Early in this week’s episode, the nanny is Facetiming with her son, who is in the Philippines, anticipating that she will return “soon.” Essie believes Margaret will head back to...

Part of what makes “Expats” so potent is that it focuses on three women in Hong Kong grappling with momentous life changes in 2014 when the city was doing the same. But the Hong Kong of today — even the Hong Kong of 2020, when the Prime Video series began shooting — is markedly different from the Hong Kong of 2014 when the story is set.
Episode 5, “Central,” explicitly digs into the scale of these changes, as instead of following the show’s main expats, it focuses on local characters of all economic strata caught up in a particularly bad storm at the beginning of the Umbrella Movement protests, from a young activist on the frontlines (Will Orr) to his worried-sick mother (Maggie Lee) to a migrant worker (Amelyn Pardenilla) with big dreams. While the pandemic shifted some of the show’s production from Hong Kong to L.A., production designer Yong Ok Lee knew...
