The Carrie Diaries shows a world where the good people are blonde and all the clothes are bad. Unfortunately, so's the script
Two demographics watched The Carrie Diaries at our house. On one side of the couch sat the married middle-aged mom who came of age during the mid-1980s where the new CW show is set. She was able to shout, "Walkman!" and "Madonna!" and "It wasn't like that!!" during the show. That was me.
Curled up alongside, with her iPhone firmly sitting on her lap, was today's female high-school viewer, courted assiduously by the CW network: my teenage daughter. Coming of age in today's world, she was able to shout helpful comments like "He's on Disney!" and "Her hair was better straight!" and "Look away, mom!" during the kissing scenes. As a mother-daughter bonding experience the show couldn't have been better. As television entertainment it couldn't have been worse.

The American Family Association boycott of the Home Depot doesn't seem to be deterring the home improvement giant. "Our response on this has been and continues to be that we respect the diversity of all people and maintain an inclusive culture." Meanwhile, the Human Rights Campaign was completely unaware that there was a boycott happening, despite the fact that it's been reported on every major blog for months.
Perhaps the Afa realized they needed a new tactic, so they created the American Association of Religious Bigots, an award they bestow people they feel hate on Christians. Their first target is actually a bit of a surprise in New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who expressed concern over...

To prove his love tepid affection for Luke, will Reid do the unthinkable?
Join us for the fun and refresh for updates!
2:05Pm Est: Oh dear. We start off with Nurse Tie-Dye telling Katie ... something. I didn't really catch it, I was too busy worrying about the hippies that are obviously manning the hospital laundry room. Of course, if hemp got into the hospital linen, that would explain a lot.
Bob tells Reid he's sorry he made him choose between the hospital and boffing Luke, but he promises to procure a young, blonde orderly for him after all this is over. He also informs Reid that Luke will be attending the next hospital meeting with them. Reid says "Okay, Bob-o". For some reason, that terrifies me.
Luke walks into Java and sees that Noah has his job back, which is apparently standing behind the counter wiping the same area over and over and scowling.

The line between parody and playing it straight can be exceedingly thin in Hollywood, and that division never really becomes clear until several years later. While most self-respecting cineastes wouldn’t be caught dead in something like Con Air in its original release, years later, it seems like Mel Brooks couldn’t have done a better satire himself. Coming off the success of Robocop, Total Recall, and Basic Instinct, Paul Verhoeven used his Hollywood credibility to produce two major films that blurred this line more than any others in recent memory: Showgirls and Starship Troopers. Of the two, Troopers is now more readily viewed as a satire, but Showgirls is the more subversive of the two, because it never, ever lets you know if its in on the joke. In the pantheon of legendary bad films to come out of Hollywood, there has perhaps never been another to make you...

Showgirls, director Paul Verhoeven's stunningly misguided and exploitative film about the life and times of an up-and-coming Vegas stripper -- sorry, dancer -- is one of those movies that achieved inexplicable success. It was panned virulently by critics, receiving a basement-dwelling 14% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is the kind of rating usually reserved for late night cable flicks and movies starring the other Baldwin brothers. It cost $45 million to make, yet grossed less than half that. It received an impressive fourteen Razzie nominations and won eight, including worst film of the decade. It basically completely deep-sixed former "Saved by the Bell" star Elizabeth Berkley's career -- she's still acting (if you want to call it that), but she's never been in anything of substance since that (barring a bit part in The First Wives' Club). Verhoeven had to slash the film just to receive an R rating, and yet despite all of that,...
