Once the writers strike ended in late September, president of FX Entertainment Nick Grad and his colleagues began to clear their schedules. After a 148-day stoppage, the second longest in Writers Guild of America history, surely there would be a deluge of writers with fresh ideas and new spec scripts coming through, and Grad and team were ready.
But here we are, nearly two and a half months later, and that deluge never came. Not for those FX executives, or, as an informal survey of the television industry suggests, their rivals across the landscape. “It’s eerie, nobody’s buying anything,” says one top producer, echoing a chorus of sources who express surprise at how quiet the marketplace has been since Hollywood’s writers went back to work.

FX has ordered more episodes of “The Bear.”
In a move that doesn’t qualify as surprising, the network announced on Monday that “The Bear” will return for Season 3.
The show’s beloved second season debuted in June and won wide acclaim for how the episodes expanded the scope established by Season 1. Funny enough, “The Bear” has not yet won any Emmy Awards despite being one of the industry’s best-reviewed shows. That’s because the 2023 Emmys – where “The Bear” will compete for numerous awards for Season 1 – was delayed until 2024 due to the actors’ and writers’ strikes. The show’s second season is eligible for Emmy consideration at the actual 2024 ceremony.
“‘The Bear,’ which wowed audiences in its first season only to achieve even greater heights in season two, has become a cultural phenomenon,” said Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment. “We’re so proud to partner with Christopher Storer,...

Jeremy Allen White is not exactly a newcomer to the TV scene. However, the actor certainly broke through to mass recognition with his acclaimed performance in the FX show that has gained accolades, the restaurant-themed drama The Bear. White is now parlaying his television network success with an upcoming film that is also collecting a lot of interest with the wrestling biopic, The Iron Claw, about the Von Erich family, also starring Zac Efron. Equally, The Bear creator Christopher Storer is now currently developing a new series at FX, thanks to the success of his intense drama.
Prepare to jump out of the frying pan and back into the fire as FX has renewed The Bear for season 3, according to The Hollywood Reporter. FX entertainment president, Nick Grad, has announced, “The Bear, which wowed audiences in its first season only to achieve even greater heights in season two, has become a cultural phenomenon.

Reservation Dogs is coming to an end.
The FX series, which airs on Hulu, will end with its third season, which premieres in August.
Co-creator Sterlin Harjo revealed the news on Instagram. “Here it is: the coming third season of Reservation Dogs will be the final season,” he wrote.
“That’s a difficult line to write and a more difficult decision to make. However, it’s the correct decision creatively for the show. I always knew what the end of this story would be, I just didn’t know when it would arrive. As we continued to break stories and write scripts this season, it became clear to the producers, Taika and me that the season three finale is the perfect series finale. When we came up with the idea for Reservation Dogs, I didn’t think the show would ever get made, but thankfully it did.”

FX’s docuseries Dear Mama set a new ratings high for an unscripted series debut on the Disney-owned outlet.
The chronicle of the lives of Tupac and Afeni Shakur, which premiered April 21, passed Welcome to Wrexham as FX’s most watched unscripted debut in cross-platform viewers. The full cross-platform figures aren’t being released, per FX policy, but the majority of Dear Mama’s audience likely streamed the show on Hulu.
The two-episode premiere of Dear Mama, directed by Allen Hughes, averaged about 185,000 viewers for its on-air debut (episode one drew 196,000). That trailed Welcome to Wrexham’s linear premiere in August 2022 (it averaged 271,000 viewers for its first two episodes), but Dear Mama made up the difference with streaming and other delayed viewing. Streaming often makes up the majority of viewing for series that originate on ad-supported and premium cable outlets.

We at the Television Critics Association winter press tour mainlined our annual “Peak TV” lecture by Professor John Landgraf, better known as FX Networks content and productions chairman. In 2022, TV (and streaming) combined for a whopping 599 original, scripted series — a new all-time high.
Landgraf believes “Peak TV,” a term he coined years ago, has finally peaked. With cost-cutting all the rage, there’s nowhere to go but backward. That said, as he openly acknowledged several times during his Thursday morning TCA executive session, Landgraf has been wrong about the “peak” — a few times — before.
IndieWire caught up with Landgraf (and FX presidents of original programming Nick Grad and Gina Balian) around lunchtime, when we asked John how low Consolidation TV — a term we think we just coined — could go?
Although Landgraf cautioned he would be “throwing darts” here, he stepped up to the toe line. So long as there are “five,...

The titular Santo Padre biker club is calling it quits, as it’s been announced that Mayans M.C. is set to end with its upcoming fifth season. The news comes from FX boss John Landgraf during an executive session at the Television Critics’ Association winter press tour. The Sons of Anarchy spinoff, which originally premiered on the network in 2008 and lasted until 2014, centers on Ezekiel “Ez” Reyes (Jd Pardo), a member of the Mayans M.C. motorcycle gang on the California-Mexico border, and his brother Angel. It’s set two and a half years after the events of Sons and stars J.D. Pardo, Edward James Olmos, Clayton Cardenas, and Sarah Bolger, among others. According to a statement from FX Entertainment President of Original Programming Nick Grad about the fifth season: “The Mayans have battled for respect, territory, and power through four intense seasons that have set the stage for...

FX’s “Kindred,” streaming on Hulu, is the long-awaited adaptation of what is arguably sci-fi trailblazer Octavia E. Butler’s most well-known novel. Released in 1979, “Kindred” is a literary mash-up that is part slave narrative, fantasy and historical fiction. What many regard as Butler’s magnum opus transports a modern Black woman back in time to a plantation where she experiences life as an enslaved woman. To bring this work to life, which has been in the Hollywood pipeline since at least the 1990s, FX tasked Obie Award-winning playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, noted for his plays “Appropriate” and “An Octoroon” as well as Pulitzer Prize finalists “Gloria” and “Everybody.” Jacobs-Jenkins also served as a producer on HBO’s critically acclaimed, multiple Emmy Award-winning limited series “Watchmen,” which propelled the horrific Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 into popular conversations.
Which is all to say, this adaptation of “Kindred” has some serious bona fides bringing it to life.

A pilot has been ordered by FX for “The Border,” announced FX’s president of entertainment, Nick Grad, on Wednesday.
Based on Don Winslow’s award-winning, critically acclaimed Border trilogy, the story is said to “explore America’s failed 50-year war on drugs through the intertwining narratives of characters on both sides of the Mexican-American border: an obsessive Mexican-American DEA agent, a young boxing promoter who inherits a drug empire, a jaded teenager who rises to power in the world of high class escorts, and an Irish kid from the streets of Hell’s kitchen who becomes a ruthless, international hitman”, per the network. “
The New York Times called the Cartel Trilogy “a hybrid of The Godfather and War and Peace” and “this generation’s defining work of American mass-culture storytelling on the border.” FX nabbed the rights to the trilogy in 2019.
