President Joe Biden, appearing at one of DC’s oldest traditions, the Gridiron Dinner, made some sharp quips about Donald Trump but then turned serious about the threat that his rival poses to democracy.
Biden directed his barbs at his own age and at his predecessor.
“One candidate’s too old and mentally unfit to be president,” Biden said. “The other guy’s me.”
The dinner tradition, which dates to the 19th century, is a white-tie night that routinely draws the top echelons of government, media and business to watch journalists perform musical skits and politicians, also including Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Utah Governor Spencer Cox, do some of their own standup.
Biden noted that his student debt relief program “doesn’t apply to everyone. Just yesterday, a defeated-looking man came up and said, “I’m being crushed by debt. I’m completely wiped out.” I said, ‘Sorry, Donald I can’t help out.

The 50th anniversary of the Watergate break-in is today, the “third rate burglary” that ultimately brought down a presidency, and all this week Washington, D.C. has been in a bit of nostalgic mode.
At the DC/Dox Festival, producer Debra McClutchy and director Anne Alvergue screened their new Netflix documentary The Martha Mitchell Effect, focusing on the life of the celebrity Nixon-era figure whose importance in blowing the whistle on the scandal has only recently gotten its due. At the National Portrait Gallery, there’s an exhibition of key portraiture and illustration from the scandal.
But it’s nearly impossible to flashback without comparing the scandal to what’s going on now, via the January 6th Committee hearings, and what may be ahead, as a conservative judge warned on Thursday of the ongoing “clear and present danger” to democracy.

“Face the Nation” is in the midst of a facelift. After getting a new moderator, Margaret Brennan, in February, the venerable CBS Sunday public-affairs program is getting a new studio, new music and new graphics.
“I guess I’m the biggest change,” joked Brennan in an interview during a jam-packed day. “The rest of it will sort of become apparent this Sunday.”
“Face the Nation” gets the update as the result of CBS News moving to a new bureau in Washington, D.C. Jack Morton Worldwide, an Interpublic Group firm known for organizing experiences and events, was hired to design the show’s new studio, which encompasses more than 1,700 feet in space, and gives Brennan the option to sit across from someone in a separate space rather than always having the show’s table between her and interviewees. “We will obviously have the graphics and music and movement on set,...

Fox News host Bret Baier distanced himself from fellow network star Sean Hannity on Tuesday, drawing a clear distinction between his news program and the opinion side of the Fox News Channel. “Sean Hannity’s show is not ‘Special Report,'” said Baier, referencing his own program. “The problem sometimes is that Fox gets painted with a broad brush.” Baier made the remarks during a panel hosted by Washington Post political reporter Dan Balz. Despite the comment, Baier still praised “Hannity,” the network’s highest-rated show. President Donald Trump consistently griped about voter fraud during and after the election. And now that he’s taken office he is taking his baseless assertions one step further as he calls for a “major investigation.”
“I will be asking for a major investigation into voter fraud,” he wrote in part Thursday morning on Twitter, and indicated that that illegal immigrants, those registered in two states and “those registered to vote who are dead” are to blame — without offering any evidence to back up his claims.
Although he won the Electoral College following the general election on Nov. 8, Trump lost...

Sure, Newt Gingrich has got lots of personal baggage and fundraising woes. But Howard Kurtz says the ex-House speaker, who says he's announcing his candidacy by next week, could still shake up the 2012 race.
Newt Gingrich rarely fails to rouse a partisan crowd, as he demonstrated again over the weekend.

There is "virtually no left-wing politician left who believes that they can pass legislation that significantly restricts the right to bear arms," he told the National Rifle Association's convention in Pittsburgh. But opponents have adopted a stealth strategy, he warned, which "is why we need an American president who insists upon our rights."
Someone very much like the former speaker of the House, perhaps. He may have a U-Haul full of baggage, but let's face it, this is not an intimidating field.

Whether Barack Obama’s presidency will tilt more toward Fdr or Jimmy Carter in the legacy department remains to be seen; either way, the 2008 election stands as a landmark, for self-evident reasons. Even if it isn’t a permanent paradigm-shifter on par with Reagan’s election in 1980, there’ll be no shortage of books trying to puzzle out the implications. Not the first and certainly not the last, Dan Balz and Haynes Johnson’s overview The Battle For America 2008: The Story Of An Extraordinary Election is a comparatively small volume; in spite of its large title, it ...
