Anthony Scott Burns, known for Father's Day (pictured above), his profoundly creepy contribution to the anthology film Holidays, as well as short films like Manifold, will soon see his upcoming sci-fi thriller Come True gain a wider audience. How do I know this? Because Variety reports that Paris-based sales and co-production company Reel Suspects has acquired international sales rights, joining forces with Los Angeles-based sales and production company Xyz Films, which handles U.S. rights, and Canada-based Raven Banner Entertainment, which holds Canadian distribution rights. And, yes, that's a lot of rights -- and I should note here that Todd Brown, this site's founder and editor, is Head of International Acquisitions for Xyz Films, though he was not involved in the writing, editing, or researching of...

Reel Suspects has acquired international sales rights to Anthony Scott Burns’s sci-fi thriller “Come True,” an elevated genre film which has been expected to world premiere at a fall festival this year. Xyz is handling U.S. rights on the film, while Raven Banner holds distribution rights in Canada.
Written and Directed by Burns, “Come True” stars Julia Sarah Stone (“The Killing”) and Landon Liboiron (“Truth or
Dare”). Stone stars as Sarah, a rebellious teenager who is tormented by dark dreams and finds shelter at a university sleep study. Hoping this will finally help her to get rid of her nightmares, Sarah unwittingly becomes the channel to a horrifying new discovery.
A Copperheart Entertainment production, “Come True” was produced by Steven Hoban, Mark Smith, and Brent Kawchuck, with the executive producers Vincenzo Natali, Andrea Hatzinikolas, Chris Wallace, Bob Crowe, and Karyn Nolan.

Our House, which is based on the 2010 film Ghost From the Machine, which also screened at Fantasia back in the day, tells the story of Ethan (Thomas Mann), who is left dealing with enormous guilt caring for his younger siblings after his parents are killed in a car accident. Quitting a promising future in technology; by day he juggles the responsibilities of raising two kids; by night, he tinkers in the garage on an invention he hopes will change the world: a machine that can generate wireless electricity. After several attempts with an electro-magnetic device, he finally breaches the wall between the living and the dead. But gets more than he bargained for, however, when the device awakens the dead souls that haunt the house. As Ethan and his...

Anthony Scott Burns’ latest film “Our House” certainly took the scenic route from concept to screen. The Canadian horror movie—making its World Premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival in advance of its multi-platform release via IFC Midnight—is a remake of a U.S. indie from 2010, “Ghost in the Machine” (also known as “Phasma Ex Machina”). Burns’ and writer Nathan Parker (“Moon”) refashioned the sci-fi concept into something a little more domesticated and spooky, in addition to pumping up the production values.

Anthony Scott Burns’ Our House is a surprisingly conventional departure from his ultra-haunting Holidays segment “Father’s Day.” As a ghost story? It’s still plenty successful at weighing the heft of post-tragedy grief. But as Burns’ follow-up to a short that builds mystifying dread with a fraction of the production capabilities? This remake of Matt Osterman’s […]

In the Spring of 2016, writer/director Anthony Scott Burns became an overnight genre sensation thanks to the Tribeca premiere and subsequent release of horror anthology Holidays. His “Father’s Day” segment pulsated with atmosphere and it wasn’t long before fans were demanding Burns be offered his feature-length due – which, given how it’s July of 2018, […]

An illustration of how bigger often isn’t better when it comes to remakes, “Our House” applies a coat a professional polish to Matt Osterman’s no-budget 2010 regional indie “Phasma Ex Machina” (aka “Ghost in the Machine”) that wipes the personality clean off this supernatural tale about messing with forces beyond one’s control. The story basics remain, involving a machine that summons spirits both wanted and unwanted to a grieving family. But what this still modest yet considerably slicker upgrade gains in surface gloss and FX, it loses in psychological intensity and suspension of disbelief — qualities the prior film’s hand-made auspices heightened.

I've got a great trailer here for you to watch for an upcoming paranormal horror thriller called Our House. This movie actually has a pretty rad horror movie concept and it looks like it will make for a good and scary movie! I really like what I'm seeing in this trailer for the film.
The story centers about a young genius who "accidentally invents a device that amplifies the paranormal activity within his family's house, possibly bringing back the spirits of loved ones." Of course, as you'd expect from any horror movie, the device also unleashes sinister things that are far worse.

The film was directed by former visual effects artist Anthony Scott Burns. This is his directorial debut and it stars Thomas Mann, Percy Hynes White, Nicola Peltz, and Kate Moyer.

"What makes you so sure you're interacting with your parents?" IFC Midnight has debuted a trailer for an indie sci-fi horror film titled Our House, the feature debut of filmmaker Anthony Scott Burns, a former visual effects artist now getting into directing. Our House is about a young genius who accidentally invents a device in hopes of bringing back the spirits of loved ones. But it also brings back things far worse. This is a cool concept and I like seeing how they play with the idea, and just how freaky it gets once they get into the horror side. The film stars Thomas Mann, Percy Hynes White, Nicola Peltz, and Kate Moyer. This looks quite good, I'm curious about it. The scares aren't overly cheesy and the sci-fi twist seems interesting. Another wicked cool cyber punk short film to watch. Lost Boy is the latest project from PostPanic Pictures, an Amsterdam-based production company (also behind the sci-fi short film Sundays). The film is a pitch for a feature sci-fi project from directors Anthony Scott Burns and Ash Thorp, and introduces us to a dark, gritty, barren world. Inspired by American action classics and Japanese samurai films, this has a true cyber punk design aesthetic, and looks damn good for a short film made on a limited budget. I really dig the world design and the costumes, though there's not much of a story here but hopefully that is something they're working on for the feature. The vehicle that shows up at the end is probably the coolest part. Check this out. Thanks to Quiet Earth for the tip on this. Short description from Vimeo: "Year unknown. Population Zero. What’s this? A new horror anthology centered around a myriad of holidays and helmed by some cats I really dig (I mean, c’mon; look at that list of die-rectors up there)? You know, normally I’d make some ridiculous pun alluding to the quality or lack thereof of whatever film was at hand, and this time I think I’ll do that, too. Let’s see if this one is going to be more treats than tricks, or just an overstuffed and overcooked turkey!

As heartfelt as it is unsettling, the “Father’s Day” segment of the horror anthology Holidays is not only my favorite short of the film, it’s also one of the most enthralling things I’ve seen this year. For most of its runtime, the segment solely stars Jocelin Donahue as Carol, a woman listening to the instructions of her supposedly dead father (voiced by Michael Gross) on a tape player, leading her to a final destination of either hope or horror.
With Holidays now out in theaters and on VOD courtesy of Vertical Entertainment and Xyz Films, I had a chance to speak with Donahue, who discussed her powerful performance in “Father’s Day” as well as her improvised scene with Christian Bale and Antonio Banderas in Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups.
What attracted you to this story by Anthony Scott Burns and the role of Carol in particular?...

It’s no secret whatsoever that I’m a pretty big Kevin Smith fan, which is something I’ve said more than once on this site. Perhaps to some degree that’s why I’m so delighted by his recent foray into horror/genre work, but I’d also make the argument that Smith is exercising new muscles of late, and that’s indisputably exciting. Today, the anthology horror project Holidays is transitioning from its run at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival this month to a limited theatrical release, with Smith helming one of the segments. It’s one of the better ones in the flick too, so it’s a great excuse for me to pay tribute to a favorite in Smith once again. The movie is, as previously mentioned, an anthology horror tale, with different filmmakers taking different holidays and giving them a scary or just twisted spin. For example,...

Following Holidays’ world premiere at Tribeca Film Festival (and VOD debut) and ahead of its April 22nd theatrical release, we caught up with Bowen for our latest Q&A feature.
Andrew, thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, and congratulations on your excellent work in Holidays. What attracted you to this film and the role of Reggie in the “New Year’s Eve” segment?

Horror anthologies are here to stay, with the V/H/S and ABCs of Death series, and Michael Dougherty’s more cohesive Trick ‘r Treat offering fans fun-size bits of terror. Now comes Holidays, a twisted little tribute to all our beloved religious, secular, and federal celebrations.
The vignettes, which are presented in order of the calendar year, open with Valentine’s Day, a story about a high school outcast, her alpha bitch tormentor, and a swim coach with a bad heart. The work from Starry Eyes duo Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer screams retro with its synth-y soundtrack and teen-centric drama, doing its very best to recall early Brian De Palma. (If the connection to Carrie wasn’t evident enough, there’s a girl wearing a red baseball cap à la Pj Soles to remind you.)

Another Sunday and another installment of VOD Vault, taking a look at some of this weeks on-demand releases that have hit various VOD platforms here in the UK. This week we have a very seasonal edition, featuring two films that take a horrific look at the holidays…
Krampus
Stars: Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner, Allison Tolman, Conchata Ferrell, Emjay Anthony, Stefania Lavie Owen, Krista Stadler | Directed by Michael Dougherty
Krampus has seemingly become the de jour villain in the horror genre recently. We’ve already had two movies featuring the evil anti-Santa, Krampus: The Christmas Devil and Krampus: The Reckoning; and now comes a third. Although unlike its seasonal brethren, this Krampus at least made it into cinemas – and so it should have. This is the latest film from director Michael Dougherty, who exploded onto the UK horror scene a few years back when his Halloween anthology Trick ‘r’ Treat was screened at Frightfest.

For centuries, annual holidays have been widely celebrated as a time to put aside one’s worries and responsibilities in order to come together with loved ones and enjoy each other’s company. Holidays are magical, not only because they represent a time of love and harmony, but also because many of them are commemorated on a global scale, making them not only a positive junction, but a universal one that can be shared by nearly all of humankind.
Although we can all look back on our happy moments as a collective people, we can also all relate to the sense of dread that often goes hand-in-hand with an approaching festivity. Holidays like Valentine’s Day can be ridiculously expensive, Christmastime can mean grueling hosting duties for many, as well as fights with family. Mother’s Day and Father’s Day can bring emotional baggage with it if a person has a lost parent,...

Growing up, I was a sucker for gimmicks. Blame my Mom. Every time a new M&M flavor (did you know they make Coconut and Cherry?) or Oreo remix hit the shelves, our house was the first on the block to sample it. I like to think it’s this upbringing that now influences my taste in horror films, like my adoration of holiday themes (Krampus! Gremlins!) and anthology collections. Or how about an entire horror anthology themed around major holidays, aptly titled – you guessed it – Holidays! It was going to take an act of Satan to keep me away from this one…
Let me start by confirming that yes, Holidays works. It’s an admitted mixed-bag of highs and lows (more highs), but that’s to be expected with eight *very* different segments. Some will love Kevin Smith’s Halloween whorishness, while others will start with their typical anti-Smith...

This April’s VOD offerings are a strong and eclectic bunch, including one of my favorite films out of the 2015 SXSW Film Festival, The Invitation, which arrives on digital platforms April 8th.

There’s a fun looking horror anthology film coming out soon called Holidays. The movie is described as a “uniquely dark” film that puts an “original spin on some of the most iconic and beloved holidays of all time. The film challenges our folklore, traditions and assumptions, making Holidays a celebration of the horror on those same special days’ year after year.”
There’s a lot of great talent that came together to create this movie. The directors involved with the project are Kevin Smith (Tusk), Gary Shore (Dracula Untold), Scott Stewart (Dark Skies), Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer (Starry Eyes), Sarah Adina Smith (The Midnight Swim), Nicholas McCarthy (The Pact), Adam Egypt Mortimer (Some Kind of Hate), and Anthony Scott Burns (Darknet).

Following a screening at the SXSW film festival, a new trailer is out for the horror tale "Hush", a kind of modern homage to 1967's "Wait Until Dark" but swapping out blindness for deafness and making it more of a straight horror tale.
Kate Siegel plays a deaf recluse living her life in an isolated house. She begins to receive ominous text messages and realises a man in a terrifying white mask has been watching her. So begins a terrifying ordeal where she must fight for her very survival against an intruder who has a sensory advantage over her.
That's not the only festival film scoring a preview today. Vertical Entertainment and Xyz Films have landed global distribution rights to horror anthology "Holidays" which premieres April 14th at the Tribeca Film Festival. It will hit VOD the day after followed by a theatrical release on April 22nd.

While Tiff is more inclusive to programming them, Sundance is not one to shy away from anthology horror films of the V/H/S type, so perhaps they’ll be looking to get into the holiday spirit with horror comedy vignette package aptly called Holidays. I do not need to tell you that horror anthologies are popular again. We have had any number over the past few years, some good and some dire, but all relying on often interconnected short stories to tell an overarching history of terror. The nice thing about anthology films is that you can get a lot of stars and directors in to work on them, producing a unique vision from a multitude of styles and approaches to the genre. The latest horror anthology will be Holidays, from Xyz Films, and it has secured a bevy of directors to contribute.
