“I am a mother of young kids but, boy, I hope I’m a very different kind of mother than Eva,” says Danish star Birgitte Hjort Sørensen about her character in the Danish psychological drama “Dark Horse,” showcased this week in Canneseries’ official competition.
The story about a mother-daughter toxic relationship, set against the backdrop of addiction, turns on 17-year-old Anna and her mother Eva who move back to Eva’s small provincial Danish town from Shanghai. Their abrupt arrival at Eva’s brother, who runs a veterinarian surgery, is awkward for everyone, as Eva has been silent for years, busy dragging her daughter around the world, in her restless pursuit of new adventures and relationships.
Soon, the unhealthy co-dependent and toxic relationship between Anna and the pill-popper Eva emerges. In an urge to fit in with her school friends and break free from her dominating mother, Anna takes risks.

One of the Nordic region’s biggest providers of premium series, Copenhagen-based REinvent International Sales, will make a splash at this week’s Canneseries festival and MipTV market.
For the second consecutive year, the sales, financing and packaging banner has two titles in competition: the Danish drama thriller “Dark Horse”, due to world premiere in the main competition, and the short form Swedish dramedy entry “Painkiller”, which initially bowed at the Göteborg Film Festival.
“Last year we had the Norwegian political drama “Power Play” which won best series, and the Swedish romantic dramedy “Out of Touch” in the short form section. Canneseries is a great platform to get the hype going on your series,” commented Helene Aurø, REinvent sales and marketing director.
Turning on this year’s competition candidates, Aurø points out that both “Dark Horse” and “Painkiller” deal with mother/daughter relationships.

In Danish political drama Borgen, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen plays a fearless journalist holding power to account. In real life, she’s been calling out government plans to tax streamers and suggesting tax incentives.
The actress has joined a chorus of voices from the Danish production and creative communities condemning Denmark’s proposed Cultural Contribution Act. The legislation includes the demand streamers such as Netflix, HBO Max and Viaplay pay 6 of their local revenues to support local production and public broadcaster Dr.
Hjort Sørensen told local Berlingske podcast Østergaard’s Salon that rather than supporting the local production sector, it would undermine the foundations on which it is build and scare away streamers.
“It’s kind of bizarre to me that you don’t try to embrace market forces that would really benefit Danish culture,” she said.

Hit political drama “Borgen” is not only gearing up for a fourth outing, but all seasons are coming to Netflix.
Following a deal between the streaming giant and Danish public broadcaster Dr, all three seasons of the show, which originally aired from 2010-2013, will land on Netflix later this year, followed by a new fourth season of the hit drama in 2022.
While terms of the co-production deal have not been disclosed, it is likely Netflix is contributing to some of the costs for the fourth season, and getting involved in the creative direction.
Dr revealed Wednesday that a new season will debut on the broadcaster, followed by a global premiere on Netflix. The show — which follows a centrist politician’s journey to become the first female Prime Minister of Denmark — reunites creator Adam Price as well as lead actresses Sidse Babett Knudsen as Birgitte Nyborg and Birgitte Hjort Sørensen as Katrine Fønsmark.

One of the worst fears “Game of Thrones” fans had going into the final season’s third episode, “The Long Night,” was that the Army of the Dead attacking Winterfell would include the resurrected zombie versions of such beloved characters as Kristian Nairn’s Hodor. While the writers fortunately did not go down that painful route, they did once discuss the potential for beloved dead characters to return as white walkers. Vanity Fair has published exclusive storyboards from the show’s main storyboard artist, William Simpson, that reveal there was a plan at some point in early development to revive dead characters and have them join the Army of the Dead.
Per Simpson’s art, the seventh season premiere “Dragonstone” was originally set to feature the zombie version of the dead wildling Karsi (Birgitte Hjort Sørensen). The character became a fan favorite after her appearance in the battle episode “Hardhome,...

High Fidelity is the best-selling novel by Nick Hornby that was adapted into the 2000 film starring John Cusack.
It is now being developed into a TV series with one major change: the lead role is being written for a woman.
Let's check out some of the other times that a woman stepped into a role originally created for a man.
1. Kara "Starbuck" Thrace (Battlestar Galactica) When Ronald D. Moore's re-imagining of Battlestar Galactica announced that Starbuck was going to be a woman, there were many skeptics. Katee Sackhoff ultimately landed the role and quickly won over viewers with her powerful portrayal. 2. Lenny (Legion) Showrunner Noah Hawley first envisioned David's friend Lenny as a middle-aged man. Once he met Aubrey Plaza, Hawley rewrote the role so she could play it. 3. Jeri Hogarth (Marvel Netflix Universe) In adapting comic character Jeryn Hogarth for the Marvel/Netflix franchise, he became a she.

In order to agree to the deal Mikael demands three things from the police: that his former girlfriend is brought to him, that the police bring the contents...

Though it might seem like Liam Neeson has all claim to avenging a child in the “Taken” series, the Norwegian action black comedy “In Order of Disappearance” proves that there’s plenty more to be mined from such a premise. Described as a cross between “Fargo” and “Taken,” “In Order of Disappearance” follows snow plow diver Nils (Stellan Skarsgård) who discovers his son has died of a supposed heroin overdose. Knowing his son was not a drug addict, Nils starts his own investigation and discovers a local drug gang is behind the crime. Soon, Nils finds the killers and the gang’s leader, but not before being caught in the crossfire between the local and Serbian gangs. The film also stars Bruno Ganz (“The Wings of Desire”), Birgitte Hjort Sørensen (“Borgen”), Kristofer Hivju (“Game of Thrones”), and more. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

The music has stopped. The Vinyl TV show on HBO has been cancelled. This reverses the decision HBO made to renew Vinyl for a second season, on February 18, 2016. 1970s-set rock and roll drama Vinyl won't return for a second season on HBO after all...
Well, this is unexpected. Back in February, the news broke that HBO had renewed its rock and roll drama Vinyl for a second season. Now, though, the network has gone back on that idea and cancelled the series altogether.
Collider reports that the initial plan had been to "retool" the show for season 2, and that showrunner Scott Z. Burns had begun working on a blueprint for Vinyl's second season. (Actual scriptwriting hadn't yet begun, it would seem.)
It doesn't seem like too much of a leap to suggest that this U-turn could be related to HBO's new chief Casey Bloys. It was his predecessor in the role - Michael Lombardo - that initially ordered season 2 of Vinyl.
Bloys seems to have different ideas about how the network should be run,...

Martin Scorsese directed the pilot of Boardwalk Empire for HBO and the series ran for five seasons. Now, he's co-created and directed the pilot of the new Vinyl TV show. Will it be a ratings success? Cancelled or renewed for a second season? Stay tuned.
Set in New York in the 1970s, Vinyl revolves around the music business of that era — a time of sex and drugs, at the dawn of punk, disco, and hip-hop. The large cast includes Bobby Cannavale, Olivia Wilde, Ray Romano, Ato Essandoh, Max Casella, P.J. Byrne, J.C. Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger's new HBO drama looks and sounds great, but can Vinyl grow into more than just Mad Men: The Rock Years?
My favourite rock ’n’ roll conspiracy theory runs as follows. Punk rock, with its cheap Diy ethic, mistrust (and deliberate avoidance) of wealth and dismissal of the decadent excess of earlier rock bands was a deliberately nefarious creation of major music labels that had grown fearful of the growing power of artists and who found a clever way of redressing the balance so that they, the anonymous suits, remained in charge. A Sid Viscious, so the theory goes, would be far more biddable and less likely to demand a larger slice of the cake than a Neil Young or a Roger Waters.
Whether by deliberate policy or not, it’s certainly true that some of the business elements of the music industry were changing.

Not even the great Martin Scorsese is immune to the whims of the economy and the movie industry. Back in the mid-90s, Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese started collaborating on a potential movie idea, and in 2008, the filmmaker's "Boardwalk Empire" collaborator, Terence Winter was called in to write the script...but it didn't get very far. “By 2009, the economy crashed, and it was clear no one was going to make a three-hour period epic about the music industry,” Winter told Deadline. But in stepped HBO. Now "Vinyl" is set to rock 'n roll next month and a new trailer has landed. Booze, drugs, sex, and oh yeah, music. This winter, Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger, and Terence Winter are taking audiences back to the '70s where personalities were as wild as the punk, glam, disco, and rock 'n roll that was coming out of New York City with "Vinyl." And an electric new trailer for the series is here. Bobby Cannavale swaggers in the lead role as Richie Finestra, who is looking to shake up the game in the record industry, even as it seems his personal habits, and professional problems are mounting around him. The actor is supported by a helluva ensemble including Olivia Wilde, Ray Romano, Ato Essandoh, Max Casella, P.J. Byrne, J.C. MacKenzie, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen, Juno Temple, Jack Quaid, James Jagger, and Paul Ben-Victor. This looks like a show that will rarely be lacking in energy. Pitch Perfect snuck up on us as a charming, funny film that took the national interest in all things acapella and grafted it onto the teen Coming of Age story template from Bring it On. With a strong ensemble and winning soundtrack, it wowed at the box office, making a singing star of Anna Kendrick, and ensuring there’d be a sequel.
If the film had any fault it was that some elements were so outsized they seemed incongruous with the rest of the story, such as the force and volume of Anna Camp’s projectile vomiting or Renee Wilson’s super-sized characterization.
Unfortunately, the trend towards bigger and more preposterous elements plagues Pitch Perfect 2, out now on Blu-ray Combo Pack from Universal Home Entertainment. However, as Roc insurance agent Jacq Vaucan investigates cases surrounding defective androids, he begins to uncover the secrets behind who is really manipulating the Automata Pilgrim 7000 – and the truth is far more complex than the make or model of any machine.

Joss Whedon can tell you about how hard it is to make a sequel that matches the creative heights of its predecessor, especially a beloved one. The "Avengers" filmmaker was forced to juggle studio priorities alongside fan expectations with "Avengers: Age of Ultron." Whedon, at least to this critic, wasn't able to match the first film's energy or euphoria, but another summer sequel, "Pitch Perfect 2," manages to come much closer to pulling off that delicate dance. Much of the credit has to go to Elizabeth Banks who makes her directorial debut with the highly anticipated flick and the results will leave you wanting more (well, more singing at least). When we last left the Barton Bellas, the collegiate singing group had gone from underdogs to national champions. Our heroines are now Queens of A Cappella and singing at the Kennedy Center in front of the President of the United States,...

One of the summer’s most surefire hits is Universal’s Pitch Perfect 2, which will reunite the Barden Bellas as they take their a cappella talents to new heights in hopes of regaining fame and popularity after a humiliating wardrobe malfunction in front of none other than the President of the United States. Back for more pitch-slapping mayhem are stars Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Skylar Astin, Anna Camp and Brittany Snow, and the sequel also adds a new Bella in the form of Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit).
A new batch of images has ended up online today, showcasing most of the principal cast and reminding us that Elizabeth Banks is not only starring in but also directing this follow-up. Will the first-time helmer be able to deliver another chapter that rivals the fist-pumping charms of Jason Moore’s original? The jury’s still out on that one,...

Automata begins with foreshadowing text:
Millions of robots witness the decay of the human civilization.
Millions of robots ruled by two security protocols:
First protocol: prevents the robot from harming any form of
life.
Second protocol: prevents the robot from altering itself or other robots.
This thought provoking science-fiction film tells the story of an insurance agent of Roc robotics corporation who routinely investigates the case of manipulating a robot. What he discovers will have profound consequences for the future of humanity.
The film stars Antonio Banderas, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen, Melanie Griffith, Dylan McDermott and Robert Forster.
Read Travis Keune’s review Here.
For fans of the genre, I can’t emphasize enough how much you need to see this stunning film.
In September I spoke with Automata’s writer/director Gabe Ibáñez. Like Stanley Kubrick, he has a profound understanding of the genre.
For Ibáñez, his own fascination about the theory of technological singularity,...

Robots. Ever since the dawn of science-fiction arose from the industrial revolution, it seemed inevitable that technology would play a major role in the future evolution of mankind. Or, perhaps, as some would suggest, skip evolution all together as human beings become extinct and the fruits of our scientific prowess take over as the top of the Earthly food chain. Wherever we fall on that debate, the ultimate question remains… what will the continued advancement of technology look like and how would humanity fit into the long-term picture?
Writer and director Gabe Ibáñez returns five years after revealing his first feature film Hierro (2009) with AUTÓMATA. He dips his quill into the rich ink pot that is science-fiction to tackle the difference between man and machine, or the similarities that emerge beneath the blinding veil of fear and hatred. This may sound all too dramatic, but at its core, AUTÓMATA is...

Antonio Banderas has said he wants to focus on working in Spain.
The actor explained that he wants to help his native film industry, as well as take advantage of the greater diversity of roles it offers him.
"I'm looking to come home and make movies here," Banderas said in San Sebastian after a screening of Gabe Ibanez's sci-fi film Autómata, which he starred in and produced.
"Hollywood has ceased to exist as such, and now it is just a brand. I might have that brand on me my whole life, but I want to do more films from my own country. I recognise the talent here and I really believe in my people," he continued (via The Hollywood Reporter).
"It's true that in Hollywood, I've always had certain limitations because of my accent or ethnicity. I go straight into certain roles. I've been working in Hollywood for 23 years with a certain handicap.
