Following the success of "11.22.63" on Hulu, actor James Franco is set to star in and produce another Stephen King adaptation - this time a film take on King's short story "Drunken Fireworks" for Rabbit Bandini Productions and Rubicon Entertainment.
Matt Rager, who penned the script for several Franco-directed films including his "The Sound and the Fury" and "As I Lay Dying" adaptations, will write the project. No director is attached yet.
The story is set in a small town in Maine and centers on a mechanic (Franco) and a retired mob boss who compete in the town's annual Fourth of July fireworks competition. Franco, Vince Jolivette, Doug McKay, Robert Kaplan, Marc Senter and Nathan Grubbs will produce.

“As a kid, I had a record with the story of Cain and Abel on it. I used to play that record all the time – it really creeped me out.” – Chris Sivertson
Brawler is a ferociously original film built on the bones of very old stories – some of the oldest in literary history. It is a part of a new sub-genre of films including Bellflower and Another Earth that are “a complicated dance between what I guess you could call the traditionally more masculine [genre] storytelling and this more feminine, intimate human drama” as Brit Marling, writer and star of Another Earth explains it.
Or to put it another way, all three films are narratives about the most twisted, fucked-up relationships humanly possible, framed in the context of a genre narrative.

Taking place during the era when the prototype for Mma was forming from the slag of sweat and blood, brothers Charlie Fontaine and Bobby Fontaine are fighters on the New Orleans underground boxing circuit, ground zero for the burgeoning movement, in director Chris Sivertson's Brawler.Charlie (newcomer Nathan Grubbs) is the older, calmer, more sage-like and settled of the two. The Fantasia Film Festival is by far my favourite film festival in the world and I’ve been impatiently awaiting some news of what films they’ll be screening this year. The full lineup which includes 130-feature titles will be announced on July 7. For now here is the...
