Off-Broadway celebrated its best May 22 at the 62nd annual Obie Awards, capping off a stellar year of downtown and off-the-beaten-path theater in New York. Hosted again by Obie- and SAG-winning actor Lea DeLaria, the evening’s biggest winners were Jennifer Kidwell and Scott R. Sheppard’s “Underground Railroad Game,” produced by Ars Nova, and J. T. Roger’s “Oslo,” produced by Lincoln Center Theater, which shared two Obie Awards for Best New American Theatre Work. Christopher Chen’s “Caught,” plus “The Band’s Visit,” the Lucille Lortel-winning musical from David Yazbek and Itamar Moses, as well as its director David Cromer, also took home awards. The initiative expanded this year to include support for Fellows working in new media, as well as continued support for Fellows in documentary and narrative film, theatre and film music as well as from the Institute’s Native American and Indigenous Program.
