Having already worked with compatriots Baz Luhrmann, James Wan, Kim Farrant, Phillip Noyce, and John Polson (who is directing her in the upcoming “The Last Anniversary” from author Liane Moriarty), Nicole Kidman generally finds a way to work with every notable Aussie filmmaker she can. And now she can add one more to the list: Justin Kurzel, the celebrated indie filmmaker known for “Macbeth,” “Assassin’s Creed,” and “True History of The Kelly Gang,” starring Aussie Russell Crowe.

In his debut feature film, “The Sparrow,” writer-director Michael Kinirons explores the psychological struggle of a teenage boy dealing with unbearable guilt and the exacerbation of his quandary caused by his dysfunctional family situation.
“The Sparrow,” which screens out of competition at the Thessaloniki Film Festival, centers on Kevin (Ollie West), a melancholic boy still grieving for his late mother and finding little consolation from his tough, emotionally distant father (David O’Hara) or from his older brother (Eanna Hardwicke).
Produced by Tiger Darling, the production shingle Kinirons runs with wife, producer Alicia Ní Ghráinne, the film is set in and around the picturesque West Cork fishing village of Baltimore, located near the southern tip of Ireland.
For Kinirons, whose writing credits include Kim Farrant’s 2015 Australian outback drama “Strangerland,” starring Nicole Kidman, Joseph Fiennes and Hugo Weaving, the unique and beautiful landscape partly inspired his idea for a very human...

Australian films have an excellent track record on the subject of abductions, most notably Lantana, Ray Lawrence’s verdant nightmarish psychological drama, whilst Kim Farrant’s Strangerland portrayed the Australian outback as a place as dangerous and inhospitable as Mars with red dust infiltrating almost every scene. Now we have Thomas M. Wright’s The Stranger, which also revolves around the tale – loosely based on a true story – of a missing person, a boy kidnapped eight years prior and presumed dead, and the hunt for his kidnapper/killer.
Rather than go for lush night-time greens orextra-terrestrial reds, Miller’s film is a palette of greys, from the yellowy light of concrete car parks to the deeper tones of swirlingclouds and impending storms. Cinematographer Sam Chiplin could have added a little more to this colour scheme. While there are glimpses of fiery red and vistas of green forest, the overall tone is positively funereal.

Three recent theatrical films infused the VOD market this week, but each took different routes for very different results. Paramount’s “Scream” performed best with a surprising strategy: Debuting at $4.99 after about 45 days in theaters, the franchise reboot skipped a higher-price initial offering. It also comes before the likely imminent streaming release via Paramount+. The film took two of the #1 slots this week.
Vudu, where “Scream” is #1 for the week, ranks by revenue spent. That means it had more than four times as many transactions as #2, “Sing 2” (Universal), which costs $19.99 (lowered this week from $24.99). That’s a strong showing.
“Sing 2” has spent nearly two months on the charts. Still #6 in theaters this weekend, it has been among the top PVOD titles daily since its debut. Along with “Scream,” it is one of four titles to place on all three charts. “Blacklight” (Open Road/$19.99), on PVOD after its third weekend,...

Current B-grade thrillers so frequently have too little plot — often not much more than a starting premise — that it’s almost refreshing to see something like “The Weekend Away,” which has many more narrative complications than it can pull off. Certainly not with sufficient credibility, suspense or atmosphere, and not in one hectic hour and a half. Nonetheless, this Netflix original plunging Leighton Meester into peril on a Croatian holiday is fast-moving enough to provide a decent night’s disposable home entertainment for viewers whose expectations aren’t geared any higher.
Director Kim Farrant’s last two features both involved suspicions cast on unstable adults over missing children. Whereas in “Weekend’s” missing person scenario, our protagonist is pretty much the sole character who doesn’t end up looking guilty of something or other. London-based American Beth (Meester) arrives in Split for a long-planned getaway with old pal Kate (Christina Wolfe...

The Gossip Girl veteran stars as an American whose friend disappears on trip to Croatia, unraveling a host of secrets in swift if predictable fashion
An American wakes up in a cozy hotel in Croatia, violently hungover and dazed from the night before. The room is strewn with clothes, the counter dotted with empty wine glasses. An unexpected blackout has rendered Beth’s (Leighton Meester) memory of the previous few hours into a few incoherent shards, ones she fears putting together. Relatable content for many women at some point in their lives, and thus a compelling starting point for The Weekend Away, a brisk and absorbing if increasingly thin thriller about a girls’ holiday weekend gone wrong.

"Did you lose something?" "My friend." Netflix has revealed the official trailer for a new "edge-of-your-seat thriller" titled The Weekend Away, about a trip-gone-wrong in Croatia. Ah man, don't make Croatia look scary, too! I've always wanted to visit. A weekend getaway to Croatia goes awry when a woman (Leighton Meester) is accused of killing her best friend (Christina Wolfe) and her efforts to get to the truth uncover a painful secret. From that description this sounds like a thriller version of the Amanda Knox story, which was already turned into the Matt Damon film Stillwater from last year. In addition to Meester & Wolfe, the cast includes Ziad Bakri, Luke Norris, and Amar Bukvic. This looks extra cheesy, with all the partying and all the on-the-run scenes. They're just rehashing this same story and setting it in another country again. Here's the official trailer for Kim Farrant's The Weekend Getaway,...

An unwavering belief that things will work out is not easily maintained in these uncertain times, but it can prove powerful when it comes to making a film on a micro-budget, according to Darius Devas.
The Byron Bay filmmaker begun production on his second feature, Unravelling, in the Northern Rivers this week, more than a decade after making his directorial debut with 2009’s Further We Search.
Written by Devas, in collaboration with lead actors Cazz Bainbridge and Duncan Ragg, the film follows the path of a young couple shifting to the Byron region from the city to live the dream while enduring personal, creative, and psychological tests that begin to undermine the relationship. The cast also includes Christopher James Baker (Eden).

Nicholas Hamilton has accomplished more than most at the age of 21 but there remains one ambition he is yet to fulfil.
The actor and musician, who spent his teens starring in titles such as It, The Dark Tower, and Danger Close, returned to his Northern Nsw hometown of Alstonville last month after two and a half years in LA, and has his sights set on a nearby cultural hotspot.
“I’m excited about the prospect of being a Byron Bay musician,” he tells If.
“I started writing music just before I went to LA and never got the chance to be that Byron busking and gigging musician which, in a weird way, I’m really excited about.”
Hamilton’s time away proved to be productive, even with last year’s pandemic disruption.
He will next be seen in Scott Speer’s romantic drama Endless, which will be available across global and local digital platforms,...

Micharne Cloughley.
Micharne Cloughley took an unusual route on her journey to landing her first TV drama screenwriting gig on season 21 of NBC’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
The 2011 Nida graduate served a long apprenticeship as a playwright, working on unscripted TV shows, writing short films and as a casting assistant.
“All the different things I’ve done have informed the way I am working here,” Micharne tells If from New York where she is immersed in scripting her third episode of the procedural show created by Dick Wolf.
Cloughley was hired as a staff writer on the NBC series by Warren Leight, who returned as the showrunner earlier this year. He started with Svu at the beginning of season 13 when the drama was at a crossroads after losing its co-lead Christopher Meloni. He successfully rebuilt the show around Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson.

‘Ride Like a Girl’.
Rachel Griffiths’ Ride Like a Girl will take the crown of highest grossing Australian film on home soil this year.
Meanwhile the low visibility and modest returns from limited releases including Kim Farrant’s Angel of Mine, Sophie Hyde’s Animals and Rodd Rathjen’s Buoyancy have prompted renewed calls from exhibitors to address the challenges facing most Aussie films in the crowded theatrical market.
Griffiths’ biopic starring Teresa Palmer as ground-breaking jockey Michelle Payne pocketed nearly $4 million in its first eight days, including $317,000 on Thursday.
So the Transmission Films release co-starring Sam Neill as Payne’s father Paddy and her brother Stevie Payne as himself will overtake Palm Beach’s $4.4 million this weekend and will zoom past Top End Wedding’s $5.2 million and Storm Boy’s $5 million.
Exhibitors are confident the film is heading for upwards of $10 million and could reach Ladies in Black’s $12 million.

‘Downton Abbey’ (Photo: Universal Pictures).
It is a rare feat to translate a six season network TV hit into box office bankability but Downton Abbey loyalists have swarmed to the occasion, with the Universal Pictures film adaptation steam-training to the top of the box office, attracting $3.2 million in its opening last weekend across 502 screens.
Sony’s The Angry Birds Movie 2 also bowed over the weekend, clinching third spot and $1.5 million in revenue, with the Andy Muschietti directed It Chapter Two nestled in at number two.
Warner Bros’ It sequel has helped to resuscitate Australian Bo fortunes, having already amassed $11 million in just two weeks. The horror brought in $3.2 million over the weekend, boasting the highest screen average for any film at $8,684.
Overall, the top 20 titles rung up $10.7 million over the weekend, down 2 per cent on last week, according to the Motion Pictures Association of Australia (Mpdaa).

‘It Chapter Two.’ (Photo credit: Warner Bros.)
Warner Bros/New Line’s It Chapter Two and Roadshow’s Chinese-American dramedy The Farewell gave the flagging Australian box office a much needed jolt last weekend while two new Oz releases struggled.
Kim Farrant’s psychological thriller Angel of Mine and Alan Lindsay’s romantic comedy The Naked Wanderer faced the same challenge which has bedeviled most Australian films this year: Opening on limited screens with minimal P&a, which means low visibility in the marketplace. So relying primarily on reviews, publicity and word of mouth is no guarantee to draw audiences.
Starring Noomi Rapace, Yvonne Strahovski, Annika Whiteley, Finn Little, Luke Evans, Richard Roxburgh and Rob Collins, Farrant’s follow-up to Strangerland grossed $26,000 on 42 screens and $43,000 including festival screenings for R&r Films.

‘Angel of Mine.’
Kim Farrant’s psychological thriller Angel of Mine began its theatrical journey in the Us last weekend, opening in 12 key cities and on demand.
The distributor Lionsgate did not share any Bo figures for the movie starring Noomi Rapace, Yvonne Strahovski and Annika Whiteley, which are typically modest for a multi-platform release.
The upside will come from the October 22 release on Blu-Ray, DVD and digital followed in February by the premiere on Hulu, Disney’s streaming platform which has 28 million subscribers in the Us.
Produced by Brian Etting, Josh Etting and Su Armstrong, the movie adapted by Lion’s Luke Davies and David Regal from the 2008 French film L’Empreinte de L’Ange had its world premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival. Single mom Lizzie (Noomi Rapace) carpools through an idyllic Melbourne neighborhood with the hedgerows in a blur, which is “Angel of Mine” director Kim Farrant’s way of establishing that this woman on the verge of a suburban breakdown can’t see past her nose. Between her divorce, her constant crying, her mental hospital stays and her dead-end job as a makeup clerk, Lizzie’s young son (Finn Little) needs more of her affection. “He feels your darkness,” warns her ex Mike (Luke Evans), who’s threatening to file for full custody. Yet, Lizzie only has eyes for acquaintance Claire’s (Yvonne Strahovski) 7-year-old daughter Lola (Annika Whiteley), a perfect moppet who could be Lizzie’s own daughter, if her infant hadn’t died in a hospital fire — a plot point that screenwriters Luke Davies and David Regal delay until we’re itchy for the script to blurt it out,...

A standout performance from Rapace as a mother looking for her dead daughter lifts a psychological thriller that otherwise strains credulity
Maternal longing is a key theme in director Kim Farrant’s psychological thriller Angel of Mine, which takes what could have been a simple stalker movie premise and fills it out with an intense array of emotions. The film hinges on a head-turning, knife edge performance from Noomi Rapace, whose startled eyes and haunted countenance have an apparitional quality – destined to be burned into the audience’s psyche like a hot iron.
In this Melbourne-set feature, an adaptation of the 2008 French film L’Empreinte de L’Ang, Rapace plays Lizzie, whose young daughter died in a fire several years ago but who begins to entertain the possibility that she is still alive. ‘Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan.’
The box office results for the Australian films and feature docs released in cinemas this year underline yet again the deep polarisation in the indie film market between the higher earners and the also-rans.
The top five titles – Wayne Blair’s Top End Wedding, Shawn Seet’s Storm Boy, Anthony Marais’ Hotel Mumbai, Damon Gameau’s 2040 and Richard Lowenstein’s Mystify: Michael Hutchence – accounted for $15.8 million or 93 per cent of the Oz releases’ takings.
The Aussie films plus holdovers racked up nearly $17 million through the end of July, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.
That’s a long way below the $40.6 million generated in the same period last year, led by Peter Rabbit’s $26.6 million, Breath’s $4.4 million (finishing with $4.6 million) and Sweet Country’s $2 million.
Surveying the challenges facing the indie film business, Transmission Films’ Andrew Mackie tells If:...

"Every time I see Lola, I'm more convinced..." "Convinced of what...?" Lionsgate has debuted the official trailer for an indie film titled Angel of Mine, the second feature film made by Australian filmmaker Kim Farrant. Described as an "intense thriller", the film stars Noomi Rapace as a grieving mother struggling to cope with the loss of her infant daughter. Her fraught emotional state puts her on edge, and she begins to believe the daughter of a neighbor is actually her own. This also stars Yvonne Strahovski, Luke Evans, Richard Roxburgh, Finn Little, Rob Collins, Rachel Gordon, Tracy Mann, and Emily Gruhl, with Annika Whiteley. This looks mega creepy and extra terrifying, what a twist on a story of grief. Goodness. Here's the official trailer for Kim Farrant's Angel of Mine, direct from Lionsgate's YouTube: In this intense thriller, a woman (Noomi Rapace) grieving over the death of her daughter...

‘Little Monsters’.
The Melbourne International Film Festival (Miff) has unveiled the first 29 films on its line-up this year, including the world premiere of Good Thing Productions and Passion Pictures’ The Australian Dream which will open the festival August 1.
The documentary, written by Stan Grant and directed by Brit Daniel Gordon, looks at race, identity and belonging from the perspective of former Sydney Swans captain and Indigenous rights activist Adam Goodes, who in 2013 sparked a national conversation about racism after requesting a 13-year-old Collingwood supporter be removed from the ground after calling him an “ape”.
“The Australian Dream is a compelling kickstart both to our festival this year, and to a national conversation,” said Miff artistic director Al Cossar.

(L-r) Jai Courtney, Finn Little and Shawn Seet.
Shawn Seet was 12 when he saw Henri Safran’s Storm Boy, the 1976 family drama based on Colin Thiele’s acclaimed novel.
The director was born in Australia but lived in Malaysia until he was 12. His uncle took him to the movie which made such an impression he kept the film’s poster, which still adorns his bedroom.
So when producers, Ambience Entertainment’s Michael Boughen and Matthew Street asked him to direct a contemporary re-imagining of the movie, he did not hesitate.
“It was amazing,” Seet tells If. “I asked them, ‘Do you know my history?’ Safran’s film was wonderful, a classic, and as I left the meeting I wondered if I had what it takes to pull it off.”
Enthusiastic responses to previews staged by Sony Pictures and screenings at the St George OpenAir Cinema suggest he’s nailed it.

Nicholas Hamilton.
Young Australian actor Nicholas Hamilton has been cast in the film adapation of Stephen King's horror classic It.
The film will be directed by Andrés Muschietti (Mama), and is produced by Barbara Muschietti, Roy Lee, Dan Lin, David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith.
Hamilton caught the acting bug after playing Elvis Presley in a Year Five school production, the young actor told If in January.
"I loved the behind the scenes [stuff] and all the rehearsals, and after the night of the play I went to my Mum and asked her what I had to do to get on TV", he said.
The teenager first joined a small agency in Lismore before being referred to Catherine Poulton Management in Melbourne, who soon secured him a part in Kim Farrant's Strangerland.
He's since starred in Captain Fantastic with Viggo Mortensen, which bowed at Sundance before heading to Cannes last month.

The Australian Outback is a favorite crucible for filmmakers – its sun-scorched expanses are like a skeleton of stone and dust, an angry terrain, devoid of life or any of the resources necessary to sustain it. Its barren hostility has served as the backdrop for many an immersive production, from David Michod’s relentlessly grim The Rover to George Miller’s post-apocalyptic Mad Max trilogy. Without fail, its sprawl and mystique have imbued films set around or in it with a natural dread, a sense of powerlessness against ancient, inhuman elements.
And Strangerland, Kim Farrant’s charged but deeply flawed drama about parents in crisis, makes effective use of it too. Here, the Outback functions as a creeping fever, lurking and slowly advancing, threatening to overwhelm the European outsiders who don’t belong there. And Catherine and Matthew Parker (Nicole Kidman and Joseph Fiennes) can feel it hot against the back...
