On August 9, 2017, a TV show premiered with two huge names attached — Stephen King (one of the most successful writers alive) and David E. Kelley (one of the most successful TV creators alive) — and no one saw it. That show? Mr. Mercedes, an adaptation of King’s 2014 novel, the first in a trilogy about a detective named Bill Hodges and the psychopath that got away. But while your mileage may vary when it comes to the book — and the work of Kelley, who created shows like The Practice and Ally McBeal — neither of them are to blame. The problem was that it premiered on the Audience Network, a pay channel owned by AT&T that nobody knew how to find.
After the Audience Network folded in 2020, Mr. Mercedes, which somehow managed to get three full seasons, rolled over to Peacock. A good thing, too, as it’s got a cast to die for — Brendan Gleeson,...

Star Trek: Discovery co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman previously told TVLine that the sci-fi drama’s fifth and final season was dependent on a “very significant” Star Trek Easter egg, and we finally know what he meant by that.
The season’s first two episodes, which are now streaming on Paramount+, sent the Discovery crew on one last adventure to find the missing clues spread throughout the galaxy that will lead them to the ancient device used by an ancient species, known as the Progenitors, to create life as we know it.

“I really believe that music is the heart of the narrative,” declares Emmy-winning composer Jeff Russo about the power of a great film or TV score. “It’s our responsibility to be the undercurrent to what the feeling of the story is; whether that feeling is love, hate, tension, anxiety. Any one of those feelings that the characters get to feel during the story should be underscored by us and brought out to a certain degree,” he says about the composer’s primary role. “Part of what I think a composer’s job is as well is to figure out where to not put music, not necessarily always where to put music, because a lot of times, the absence of music can also evoke certain feelings.”

Exclusive: Accusing AT&T of “callous gamesmanship,” SAG-AFTRA has filed suit against the giant media and telecommunications conglomerate in a dispute over nearly $5 million in residuals and other compensation allegedly owed to actors who appeared on Mr. Mercedes, the TV series based on the Stephen King novel that starred Brendan Gleeson and Harry Treadaway.
The show aired from 2017-19 on AT&T’s now-defunct Audience Network.
AT&T, however, says that it doesn’t owe the union anything and wants SAG-AFTRA to repay the nearly $700,000 that it “mistakenly” paid the union during a failed two-year-long arbitration over the show’s unpaid residuals.
SAG-AFTRA’s lawsuit, filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles (read it here), seeks to compel AT&T and several other named defendants involved in the show’s production – including DirecTV and Labc Productions – “to complete an arbitration that AT&T abandoned after actively participating in...

Last Night In Soho Writer Remembers Penny Dreadful: 'We Were Just Too Soon, Weren't We?' [Exclusive]
Once upon a time, in the mid-2010s, there was a little Showtime series called "Penny Dreadful." That series, loosely based on the "penny dreadful" magazines of the Victorian period, was a beautiful gothic nightmare. Viewers were enraptured with the stories of Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), adventurer Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton), possibly possessed Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), and howling hottie Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett). "Penny Dreadful" was like a truly excellent adaptation of "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," mixing public domain gothic characters to delightful conclusions.
The series, created by Jon Logan and Sam Mendes, only ran for three seasons. The...

Mr. Friendly’s Frosteez has a new driver scooping ice cream for the kids and smiley-faced tennis balls for the older crowd. A certain 2003 Mercedes-Benz S 600 sports a new color. While Mr. Mercedes season 3 ended with a vague tease the serial killer at the heart of the series may be starting anew as the Supreme Electronix co-worker who took him out, Peacock is keeping the series exactly as it originally ran before Audience Network was shut down.

Mr. Mercedes has found a new home in NBCUniversal’s recently launched premium streaming platform, Peacock.
The move to Peacock yields a new lease on life for Mr. Mercedes, the Stephen King adaptation crime series, which started life in 2017 as a broadcast offering on the AT&T-owned, DirecTV-exclusive Audience Network, only to be left derelict with an uncertain future after the channel’s dissolution this past January. With the move—announced on Sept. 21, King’s birthday, of all days—Mr. Mercedes Seasons 1 and 2 will be bingeable on Peacock starting on October 15. That premiere will eventually be followed by the show’s most recent outing, 2019’s Season 3, which will arrive on a date to be announced.

Updated: The first three seasons of “Mr. Mercedes” have been acquired by Peacock.
The show previously aired on Audience Network but that network was shut down by AT&T in January, leaving the show’s remaining scripted shows in limbo. “Mr. Mercedes” aired its third season late last year, with the series having received strong critical acclaim throughout its run.
As part of the deal, Seasons 1 and 2 of “Mr. Mercedes” will stream exclusively on Peacock. Both of those seasons will debut on Oct. 15 on the streamer, while the premiere date for Season 3 is yet to be determined.
Based on the New York Times Best-Selling Bill Hodges trilogy by Stephen King, “Mr. Mercedes” follows a retired detective (Brendan Gleeson) who is tormented by a serial killer (Harry Treadaway) through a series of letters and e-mails, causing him to set out on a dangerous and potentially felonious crusade to protect his loved ones and himself.

The film trilogy adapting R.L. Stine’s Fear Street book franchise is officially relocating its ominous traffic to streaming giant Netflix.
A deal has been closed that will see Netflix acquire the Fear Street films from Disney, reports Deadline. The plan now is to premiere each of the interconnected film entries—all directed by Leigh Janiak—in Summer 2021 at the interval of a month apart. Netflix’s early marketing plans will see the trilogy heralded by a campaign dubbed “The Summer of Fear.” While a solid release date was not provided, the summer window seems solid and shouldn’t be susceptible to Covid-dealt delays, since principal photography on the films has already wrapped.
While fans of Stine’s Fear Street—the author’s slightly-scarier, somewhat-sexified teen-aimed alternative to his signature Goosebumps books—certainly embraced this live-action adaptation, the film trilogy project was passed off by the coalition of 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment,...

Nearly two decades after he last played USS Enterprise Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Patrick Stewart admits he was initially wary to assume the mantle of the legendary Star Trek character again. “You know, there have been other interested parties, I say that very politically, over the past 18 years who have approached me about reviving Star Trek: The Next Generation or Star Trek: Picard or something like that,” he said during Deadline’s virtual Contenders Television event. “I always thanked them kindly and moved on,” he added, stressing how proud he was of the Tng tales told on both the small and big screens from 1987-2002.
However, as Star Trek: Discovery took off in 2017 and with the success of Logan that same year, Blunt Talk star Stewart found himself considering changing his mind after a meeting with executive producer Alex Kurtzman and his team. “If you can find that transformation of the man and his spirits,...

Aside from a few wobbles, Star Trek: Picard delivered what it promised. We got to see Patrick Stewart’s beloved Captain Jean-Luc Picard return for more adventures, reuniting with several The Next Generation buddies along the way. But the show’s new characters were no slouches when it came to keeping up with the veterans. I particularly enjoyed Isa Briones’ Soji, Michelle Hurd’s Raffi Musiker and Harry Treadaway’s scheming Romulan secret agent Narek.
But now it’s sounding as if Narek’s story is done, as Patrick Stewart has made comments that indicate that Treadaway isn’t part of the upcoming second season. Speaking with Gold Derby, he said:
“We have a dazzling group of actors. No matter who I find myself playing a scene with, it is interesting, unusual, challenging, and always exciting. And every one of us is back. Well, I think we may have said goodbye to Harry Treadaway,...

We’re heading into Emmy Awards season, and CBS is starting up its “For Your Consideration” campaign on many of its shows. Trek fans will be pleased to know that the network is pushing hard on Star Trek: Picard, which aired its smash hit debut season earlier this year. Fan and critical response was positive for the bold Next Generation sequel series, and CBS is hoping to turn that into a swathe of Emmy nominations for the cast and crew.
As well as suggesting the show for Outstanding Drama Series, the campaign to get the one and only Sir Patrick Stewart a nom for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series is leading the way. Stewart has received four Emmy nominations over his illustrious career, but never for Trek, so it would be a big deal if he could get some recognition for Picard.

It’s fair to say that Star Trek: Picard has proven to be a runaway success for the Powers That Be over at CBS.
Even before the premiere of season 1’s two-part finale, “Et in Arcadia Ego,” CBS issued the green light on season 2, sparking speculation that Picard‘s second chapter would feature even more fan-favorites from The Next Generation. That remains to be seen, of course, but during a recent interview with ComicBook.com, William Riker himself, Jonathan Frakes, hinted at potentially returning to direct future episodes of Star Trek: Picard.
If you’ve been paying close attention to Picard‘s maiden voyage, you’ll know Frakes helmed both “Absolute Candor” and “Stardust City Rag,” so he’s certainly a prime candidate for CBS’ roster of filmmakers going into the second season.

Harry Treadaway’s Romulan spy Narek was one of the more interesting characters in Star Trek: Picard. The Romulan Zhat Vash agent showed his duplicitous, manipulative nature by tricking Isa Briones’ Soji into revealing the location of the synthetic homeworld. But he found himself torn between his genuine feelings for her and his Romulan extremist philosophy. By the end of the series, he’d teamed up with the heroes in an attempt to stop Soji summoning the apocalypse and, while he’s absolutely not a good guy, he’s still got some interesting complexities.
All of which made it a bit of a head-scratcher that Narek just disappeared during the season finale’s final scenes, leaving viewers wondering where the hell he went. Now, however, showrunner Michael Chabon has opened up about this on Instagram, admitting to the error and saying what should have happened.
“Yeah. Narek. We know, we know.

CBS All Access officially greenlit Star Trek: Picard Season 1 before the first season had aired a single episode. According to Deadline, which first broke the report, Season 2 will consist of 10 episodes. This is the same as Season 1, which just finished airing. If you’ve yet to check it out, you can watch it for free through April 24th.
The series will lose its season 1 showrunner for its second season, as Michael Chabon will step down to work on a different TV series for CBS’ sister network Showtime: an adaptation of his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. Chabon will stay on as an executive producer for Picard season 2 alongside Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman, Patrick Stewart, Terry Matalas, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth, with Aaron Baiers and Kristin Beyer serving as co-executive producers.

Has it been 10 weeks already? Star Trek: Picard reaches the end of its first season this Thursday, with the grand conclusion to the two-part finale storyline “Et in Arcadia Ego.” Last episode, we saw the situation escalate massively, with the Synths deciding to launch an attack on the galaxy before the Romulans kill them first, apparently fulfilling the prophecy that Data’s descendants would bring doom to all organic life, after all.
These six new promo images (see the gallery below) give us our first look at the season finale, checking in on Sir Patrick Stewart’s Starfleet legend, Santiago Cabrera’s Chris Rios, Allison Pill’s Agnes Jurati as well as the villainous Narek and Narissa (Harry Treadaway and Peyton List). While the Romulans scheme and his friends try their best to temper tensions, Picard is clearly bearing the weight of the war that he might have inadvertently helped start.

CBS has dropped a batch of new promo images for tomorrow’s episode of Star Trek: Picard. Titled “The Impossible Box,” this marks the sixth episode of the series’ first season, which means we’re now already in the second half of its slim 10-episode run. So far on the show, then, we’ve seen Sir Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc head back out into space on his new ship La Sirena with a new crew to boot. And these photos showcase Picard’s newfound allies.
Picard’s misfit crew consists of first officer Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd), pilot Chris Rios (Santiago Cabrera), doctor Agnes Jurati (Alison Pill) and Romulan warrior Elnor (Evan Evagora). These pics also check in on the secondary plot aboard the Borg Cube that’s the base of the Romulan Reclamation Project, where Narek (Harry Treadaway) is attempting to manipulate Soji (Isa Briones), Data’s secret daughter.

Tamlyn Tomita reveals what it’s like as Trek’s most formidable Vulcan spymaster on Star Trek: Picard
This Star Trek: Picard article contains spoilers through Episode 3.
Though a secret Romulan cabal called the Zhat Vash might be the most overt set of villains in Star Trek: Picard, another pointed-eared character strikes even more fear without needing to pick up a phaser.
In Episodes 2 and 3 of Star Trek: Picard, Commodore Oh — played by Tamlyn Tomita — barely needs move a muscle, or raise an eyebrow, to make her point. In Episode 3, “The End is the Beginning,” all Oh does to freak out Dr. Jurati (Alison Pill) is to stand perfectly still behind her while wearing sunglasses. Tomita has clearly taken Vulcan stoism to the next level. But, she doesn’t want you think her new Star Trek: Picard character is big baddie. There might be another...

In an emotional moment on Wednesday’s episode of “The View,” Patrick Stewart invited Whoopi Goldberg to appear on the second season of CBS All Access’ “Star Trek: Picard,” reprising her character of Guinan from “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”
Goldberg — who quickly and gladly accepted — appeared to be totally surprised by Stewart’s offer, which he said was a “formal invitation” from himself and “Picard” executive producer Alex Kurtzman.
“‘Star Trek’ was one of the great experiences from the beginning to the end,” Goldberg said with an enormous grin. “I had the best, best, best time. Best time ever!”
“Well, it was wonderful having you, and we cannot wait to have you with us again one more time,” Stewart replied.

When a character grows popular enough to endure for decades, at the hands of more than one writer, the difference between sequels and fan fiction can get awfully blurry. Few writers understand that messy feeling better than Michael Chabon, the Pulitzer Prize-winning fanboy at the helm of Star Trek: Picard. In the new CBS All Access series premiering January 23rd, Sir Patrick Stewart reprises his Star Trek: The Next Generation role as Jean-Luc Picard, now a Starfleet retiree running the family vineyard in France.

Here is a reminder that we have almost two dozen favorites lists, and since we couldn't showcase every show on every list, we parsed them out a bit to make it more fun.
And these lists are not in any particular order. They're in the order the entries were received by TV Fanatic staff, so don't read into them!
To qualify, a show that began in another decade had to be airing during the decade, run a larger number of seasons from 2010 through 2019 if it started before 2010 or run the entire decade. Here we go!

Star Trek: Picard's voyage on CBS All Access is poised to be a long one.
The streamer has renewed the forthcoming series for a second season, months ahead of its series premiere.
Deadline first reported the news, while revealing the sophomore run would come in at 10 episodes, right on par with the first.
The series is set 20 years after Jean-Luc Picard's last adventure in Star Trek: Nemesis and finds him deeply affected by the destruction of Romulus, which occurred in the 2009 film Star Trek.
"We wanted it to be a real time follow-up to where we last saw Picard," executive producer Akiva Goldsman said at New York Comic Con in October.
"We wanted to let the ensuing years that have happened for us also have happened for Jean-Luc. We spent a lot of time, collaboratively, filling in the intervening years. We know pretty much everything that happened in those 20 years.
