BBC’s Doctor Who has always maintained a tight budget, and this is mainly the reason why they could not get permission to use at least one The Beatles song. The band’s price is way too beyond the budget of the show, something that producer Matthew Weiner was willing to pay for the Mad Men series.
Ncuti Gatwa in the trailer of Doctor Who
Fans would wonder about whatever happened to their collaboration with Disney. The truth is, even with the financial support and fame of the studio, they still couldn’t get a license to use The Beatles’ songs.

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains spoilers for “Unfrosted.”]
The Pop-Tarts were heated up and soon to pop — if Kellogg’s only had a name for its new toaster treat. For that, Jerry Seinfeld went to the best 1960s ad men he, or anyone, could find: Don Draper (Jon Hamm) and Roger Sterling (John Slattery) of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce — and of AMC’s “Mad Men.”
Who would have thought that Netflix’s “Unfrosted” — a Pop-Tarts faux origin story — would be what got those two back in their single-vented suits? A fantastical (and fantastic) cinematic universe was created, almost by accident. Here’s the not-fake origin story of the film-stealing scene.
“We would take breaks when we were writing this movie and watch ‘Mad Men’ scenes,” the film’s cowriter Spike Feresten told IndieWire. “Jerry had just rewatched the entire [series] again and said, ‘You’ve gotta see this scene.’ And it would play in our meetings like a comedy.

Jerry Seinfeld was delighted to join his friend Larry David for Curb Your Enthusiasm‘s finale, the comedian said this week, adding that the series’ Seinfeld tie-in helped elevate his own show’s conclusion.
“I think connecting the two finales [was the way to go],” Seinfeld told Vanity Fair. When Curb Your Enthusiasm concluded earlier this month, its series finale mirrored many of the details from Seinfeld‘s 1998 finale, with both shows featuring their main characters on trial for breaking a recondite local law. Seinfeld‘s final episode was written by David, and Seinfeld returned to play himself for the final installment of Curb.
Seinfeld said this week he told David yes right away upon being approached with the idea. “That just seemed like nothing but fun,” he said. “And I just love hanging out with Larry. We always just laugh all day long.”

Whether it’s the role of Buddy in Edgar Wright‘s Baby Driver or Cyclone in one of the biggest films of 2022, Top Gun: Maverick, Jon Hamm is always one of the most attractive people on set. Similar was the case during his stint in his breakthrough show, Mad Men, which launched Hamm and his costar Christina Hendricks’ career to prominence.
But while Hamm was the most good-looking guy on the set, whose beauty left his costars awestruck, Hendricks’ beauty too became too much to handle for the crew on the set of Mad Men.

AMC drama Mad Men is one of the best TV series of its era – or any other for that matter. The seven season-long saga of 1960s Madison Avenue advertising executive Don Draper (Jon Hamm) has rightfully taken its place among the classics in the TV canon. In addition to its greatness, however, another thing that Mad Men should be remembered for is its bizarre commitment to secrecy.
Mad Men was one of the most spoiler-phobic TV shows ever. Showrunner Matthew Weiner insisted that AMC’s promos for the drama reveal next-to-nothing about upcoming plots. A typical “on the next episode of Mad Men” advertisement might include stunning revelations such as someone entering a room, someone exiting a room, or God forbid: someone uttering a revealing line of dialogue like “what’s going on?”
Mad Men promos that say absolutely nothing became something of a meme. Fans have even cut together...

It’s four for four for Jesse Armstrong.
The “Succession” creator and showrunner took home the Emmy for Best Drama Writing on Monday for penning “Connor’s Wedding,” the third episode of the HBO series’ fourth and final season, which featured the shocking death of family patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox). “Succession,” which was the odds-on favorite to win heading into the telecast, beat out episodes from fellow HBO dramas “The White Lotus” and “The Last of Us,” as well as AMC’s “Better Call Saul,” Disney+’s “Andor” and Apple TV+’s “Bad Sisters.”

Warning: contains spoilers for Mad Men season four.
Everything about Ida Blankenship is a punchline. From the spilt Scrabble tiles clatter of her name, to her gravelly voice and chewed-on Brooklyn vowels, to the old lady wig and post-cataract lenses used to age up and disguise the glamour of actor Randee Heller, the Mad Men character exists purely as a gag. A relatively rare one, in a show mostly fixated on existential emptiness.
The point of Miss Blankenship when she finally appears as comic relief in season four is that she’s not sexually desirable. Ad company office manager Joan billets her at Don Draper’s desk after he’s used up and discarded another in a long line of nubile young secretaries. The braying old woman’s a failsafe; she’s the bromide in Don’s coffee.

Suits is one of the best legal dramas that actually managed to make the profession of lawyer cool again. The USA Network series follows Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams), who has a photographic memory and joins Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) at a prestigious law firm. The only problem with that is Mike didn’t actually go to law school and he doesn’t have a degree about which he has to lie to everyone. Suits ran for 9 brilliant seasons and ended its run around three years ago in 2019. So, if you are a Suits fan and miss the series here are some brilliant shows like Suits you can watch.

As Don Draper once said, “If you don’t like what’s being said, change the conversation.” And that’s just what happened to Jon Hamm, saying he wasn’t allowed to star in David Fincher’s Gone Girl, with the role eventually going to Ben Affleck.
On a recent episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Jon Hamm confirmed he was closer than nearly anyone else to lead Gone Girl, but said Mad Men got in the way. “I was down to the very end of that. It was meant to be me, but we had to film the continuing adventures of Mr. Draper.” While no specifics were given, it is believed that Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner wouldn’t let him out of his contract, although Hamm would do a number of movies while production on Mad Men was going on, including Million Dollar Arm, which...

Jon Hamm is best known for portraying advertising executive Don Draper in Mad Men. The series helped catapult Hamm’s career to the next level, and fans insist he was born to play the part. Jon Hamm missed out on a starring role that went to Ben Affleck. But he’s not Mad, man.
David Fincher’s Gone Girl almost went to Hamm over Affleck, Hamm said on Tuesday’s Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. Hamm made an appearance with his Mad Men costar John Slattery, and answered a fan’s question about whether he was slated for the 2014 mystery-thriller.
“Yeah,” he responded. “I was down to the very end of that. It was meant to be me, but we had to film the continuing adventures of Mr. Draper.” Hamm played ad man supreme Draper on “Mad Men,” which ran from 2007 to 2015.
Hamm didn’t get into the nitty gritty of why he had to turn down the role. But a 2015 report from Page Six claimed Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner wouldn’t let him out of his contract.

When TV critics are given screeners of upcoming series, the episodes are often accompanied by a letter from the showrunner asking us to not reveal certain plot points. Sometimes, these requests are eminently reasonable: Succession creator Jesse Armstrong didn’t want us telling our readers about the big thing that happened in this season’s third episode, and didn’t want us even hinting that it was a notable installment in any way, so that viewers would be as gobsmacked by it as we were. Sometimes, they are just silly,...

Enormous critical acclaim is nice, I’m sure. It is, after all, what television writers and actors aspire to. But there’s also a joy in being a sleeper hit; a cult show that cruises under the radar but develops an obsessed following. Less glamorous, though, is programming that achieves middling commendations, medium admiration. Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs Maisel is in this latter category: good reviews, a smattering of Emmys, and decent audiences on Amazon’s streaming service can’t hide the fact that Amy Sherman Palladino’s late-1950s comedy-drama has always been a touch unloved. As the curtain comes down with its fifth and final series, is it time to reappraise one of the warmest, wittiest shows of recent years?

It’s inspired by a true story and follows novelist Rama (Kayije Kagame) as she attends the trial of Laurence Coly (Guslagie Malanga), a young woman accused of killing her 15-month-old daughter by abandoning her to the rising tide on a beach in northern France. As the trial continues, the words of the accused and witness testimonies will shake...

"The Sopranos" features some incredible episodes. It was more cinematic than a gangster show was expected to be in the '90s and, as /Film's Shae Sennett writes, creator David Chase was aware of its potential as a national phenomenon. It was a television show about a Mafia man, of course, but borne of Chase's experiences in therapy, this mob boss would learn everything about himself and change little — a concept that would eventually dominate the wave of prestige TV to come.
For its six-season run from 1999 to 2007, the HBO crime series mostly stayed in northern New Jersey, where the Dimeo crime family would operate with Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) at the top. But some of its most celebrated episodes — Christopher goes to Hollywood, Carmela and Rosalie go to Paris — broke free of the show's own boundaries and gave a chance for the traveler-protagonist to add some depth to their character arc.

After writing “The Sopranos” episodes, Matthew Weiner thought he was part of the HBO “family.”
However, the “Mad Men” creator revealed that new executive management at the network following visionary Chris Albrecht’s exit led to him being ignored, per the new book “It’s Not TV: The Spectacular Rise, Revolution, and Future of HBO” by Felix Gillette and John Koblin.
According to the oral history of the network, then-hbo President Carolyn Strauss “snubbed” Weiner and HBO did not even respond to the “Mad Men” pitch, despite “The Sopranos” showrunner David Chase urging “everyone at the network to give it a look.”
Weiner recalled, “It was very disappointing to me, as I pushed the rock up the hill, that they did not notice me. Because I was part of the family.”
Eventually, “Mad Men” landed at cable network AMC, whose goal was to “do an HBO kind of series,” as Weiner said.

Amid the torrent of accusations leveled against powerful Hollywood men in the frenzied first few months of the #MeToo era, industry observers often shared the same jaded expectation. Short of arrest or indictment, the thinking went, the accused would be back on their feet after a brief time-out and a few memory-cleansing news cycles, carrying on with their careers unaffected. The dollar is king; Hollywood always forgets; etc.
This hasn’t happened. In fact, comebacks — if they materialize at all — are strikingly and significantly circumscribed. One of #MeToo’s greatest victories, at the practical level, has been its unrelenting administration of professional punishment.
Think about how few prominent individuals felled by sexual harassment or assault allegations in the post-Weinstein era have returned to an equivalent stature. The category excludes the likes of Jamie Foxx and Ryan Seacrest, whose denials of the allegations against...

In another universe, the memorable theme of "Mad Men" was an indie rock ballad. The suspenseful string composition by DJ RJD2 was actually not the series creator's first choice for the show's intro. In fact, the acclaimed musician Beck revealed that he was approached first to make the show's theme song. He turned the opportunity down — and he's regretted it ever since.
Beck first established himself as an indie rock musician in the 1990s. His hit song "Loser" propelled him to mainstream success. He went on to write and perform songs for a number of films, from dramas like "Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind" to comedies like "Nacho Libre." His songs also appeared in several unforgettable sitcoms of the early 2000s, including "The O.C." and "Friday Night Lights."

AMC Networks studio and entertainment chief Dan McDermott said the company’s modest scale, multiplatform distribution and talent relationships have enabled it to compete against an array of deeper-pocketed rivals.
During a fireside chat at the company’s programming summit in Brooklyn, McDermott also addressed the end this year of longtime programming pillars The Walking Dead, Better Call Saul and Killing Eve.
“Every great show, every great experience at some point comes to an end,” he said of the series finales. “We’re so grateful to have had these shows on our platforms. They helped define AMC as a home for premium content.”
McDermott said developing worthy follow-ups to that potent trio is simply “my job.” Assessing the development slate and library holdings when he started at the company in 2020, he said, was a helpful start, but even more determinate was the company’s decision shortly after his arrival to fully embrace streaming.

"Mad Men," considered by many to be one of the greatest television shows of all time, was intensely character-driven and extremely well-written. And creator Matthew Weiner gets a lot of credit for both having the idea for the show and assembling the team of writers who would make it as excellent as it became.
Anyone aware of the quality of "Mad Men" would probably not be shocked to learn that Weiner worked on "The Sopranos" before he got "Mad Men" off the ground. Both shows are beautifully crafted character studies, both focusing on men of dubious morality. He worked on "The Sopranos" under David Chase, who was instantly impressed by Weiner's creativity and unique approaches to writing characters, according to a Vanity Fair interview.
"To me, Matt's number-one strength is his originality," said Chase, talking about Weiner's time on "The Sopranos." "He just has his own view of the world that always comes through.

"Mad Men" was not only a pristinely crafted slow-burn character study; it was also one of the most meticulously researched and finely detailed period pieces on television.
Everything was accurate to the 1960s setting, from the outfits and haircuts to the ads and music. Show creator Matt Weiner was even particular about who he cast as extras. The show did an excellent job engrossing the viewer in the time period while not taking anything away from the complex characters.
Of course, accurately portraying the '60s also meant you had to deal with sensitive topics like the prominent racism and sexism of the time. While the show's lack of significant Black characters can certainly be criticized, its portrayal of women in the workplace is far stronger, and according to Weiner, the aspect of the show he's most proud of.

“Succession” continues to have the write stuff as it picked up its third Best Drama Writing Emmy in as many seasons at Monday’s Primetime Emmy Awards. The three-peat puts the HBO hit into an exclusive club of dramas that have maintained a perfect record in writing for their first three seasons.
Just three other shows have accomplished this feat — or two if you really want to get technical about it. “The Defenders” did it first, winning four writing awards for its first four seasons from 1962-65, but there are a few caveats. In 1964, the category was split into original and adapted, with the courtroom drama triumphing in the former. In 1965, the Emmys attempted an ill-advised experiment with only four categories — program, acting, directing and writing — and “The Defenders” won the category titled Outstanding Individual Achievements in Entertainment — Writers. With credits like "Kolchak: The Night Stalker," "The Rockford Files," and "Northern Exposure," decades of television work gave "The Sopranos" creator and showrunner David Chase a strong sense of what would and wouldn't work for network TV. Tag-teaming with a strong stable of writers, the HBO drama surrounding a New Jersey-based Italian-American mob family took on the shape of an epic text that would appeal to the masses while also commanding critical respect.
In the writers' room, the nuances of New Jersey mob life were meticulously explored in ways that both nodded to and departed from their gangster movie forebears. Writers for the show would include Terrence Winter (who would go on to helm "Boardwalk Empire"), cast members like Michael Imperioli, and "Northern Exposure" writers Robin Green and Mitch Burgess, the latter of whom understood what Chase was going for -- a crucial part of staying in the writers' room after its fifth episode.

When it comes to any prestige anti-hero drama, getting the right actor for the main role is crucial. It's hard to imagine "The Sopranos" without James Gandolfini at the center, just as you can't imagine "Breaking Bad" without Bryan Cranston. When it came to finding the actor for Don Draper on "Mad Men," showrunner Matthew Weiner was originally hesitant to cast Jon Hamm for the role. Why? Because Hamm was a little too good looking.
Alan Taylor, a "Sopranos" director who was involved with the casting, explained their thought process:
"I think Matt [Weiner] and I, coming off Sopranos, both had a kind of bias because we had a wonderful experience with Jim Gandolfini, and there is a kind of superiority that goes along with that kind of casting—you know, look, we're not casting a movie star, we're casting a great actor."

In a lot of ways, "Mad Men" unfolds as just one prolonged downward spiral for many of its central characters. And the epicenter of it all is undoubtedly prodigy adman Don Draper. For all his suave talents and enigmatic presence, the man also has more skeletons in the closet than a haunted house. Then there's his tendency to uproot and destroy lives — including his own — while trying to frantically run from said skeletons.
By the time you're introduced to him in season 1 of "Mad Men," it's not exactly a habit he's kicked either. Even as an intense fan of the show, Don's depressive episodes and reckless routines become a little wearisome at times. Like the casual racism and fierce misogyny, the show doesn't hesitate to remind you how flawed the people that occupy this world are. For Jon Hamm, navigating his character's worst bits took its own toll on him.

One of the ways "Mad Men" makes its many dour moments more palatable is through music, from impromptu musical numbers to dinner party concerts. Who can forget Bert Cooper's song-and-dance number, or Megan Draper's French serenade of "Zou Bisou Bisou." In another memorable musical moment from the show, Joan Holloway sings in French while also wielding an accordion with uncanny skill.
It's a moment that comes as a light shock, one of the many reminders that the characters in "Mad Men" carry with them pasts we know nothing about. But actor Christina Hendricks, who plays Joan, really only needed to learn French for the scene, since she was already an adept accordion player before "Mad Men." Initially, an accordion wasn't the instrument the writers intended Joan to play, but that all changed when they found out about Hendricks' skill.

Although "Mad Men" was a show that paid a lot of attention to detail, it did mess up on occasion. For instance, the writing on the sign on the Sterling Cooper building in the early seasons is in the Gil Sans font, a font that was not in popular use until the seventies! Boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder. But for the most part, it's a show that successfully immerses its viewers in the crazy world of the sixties, with the clothes, slang, furniture, and the characters' values all consistently era-appropriate.
That pursuit of full immersion extended into the casting of the extras on the show, who also needed to look like believable upper-class people of the time. This created some problems for the casting directors, because it was often hard to find suitable actors in Los Angeles who met showrunner Matthew Weiner's particular standards.

But in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, actress Kiernan Shipka made her pitch for a possible sequel series focused on Sally Draper.
“I’m not done with Sally,” Shipka, who played the young Sally on the show, said to the outlet. She then made her pitch to where the Draper’s eldest daughter could find herself in the 1970s: “I don’t think she’d be in New York. I think she’d do L.A. … But I’m not done with her at all.”

Can you believe it’s been 15 years since the hit show Mad Men aired on AMC? The show debuted July 19, 2007, and the last episode took place on May 17, 2015. The Matthew Weiner drama lasted seven seasons and became a cultural phenomenon.
Many shows from the 1980s, and 1990s are seeing a reboot or reimagining of some sort, but the stars of Mad Men aren’t interested in reviving the show as Jon Hamm told Et in 2020, “I’m of the belief that when a story’s told, it’s probably done being told. So I don’t know, maybe there’s another version of it out there somewhere, but I hope not.”
When Mad Men ended, the AMC Network threw around ideas for character spin-offs as a way to continue the story, and one of the stories followed an adult Sally (Kiernan Shipka). Coincidentally, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina actress is one...

“Mad Men” is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, and while some fans will be shocked that so much time has gone by, the show also feels like a relic of a bygone era in many ways.
While Matthew Weiner’s period drama helped launch the so-called “Golden Age of Television,” it is almost impossible to imagine a show having its massive cultural reach in today’s saturated streaming era. The AMC series was a bona fide cultural phenomenon, with its acclaimed performances and meticulous period production design dominating water cooler discussions for its entire seven season run.
While just about every major TV series in recent memory has enjoyed some sort of reboot or spinoff to generate content for the streaming wars, most of the “Mad Men” cast has been disinterested in reviving the show.

Exclusive: Deadline has the first pair of exclusive tracks from Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli’s score for The Thing About Pam, which is set for release via Milan Records on April 15, following the airing of the NBC true-crime ratings hit’s finale.
The Blumhouse Television-produced limited series centers on the 2011 murder of State Farm employee Betsy Faria (Katy Mixon), which resulted in her husband Russ’s (Glenn Fleshler) conviction, although he insisted he didn’t kill her and was later exonerated. This brutal crime set off a chain of events that would expose a diabolical scheme deeply involving Faria’s supposed friend, Pam Hupp (Renée Zellweger).
From Belousova and Ostinelli’s perspective, Pam is someone who “tromps through town like a predatory larger-than-life force that will crush anything that comes her way.”
The show’s main theme, “The Thing About Pam,” is billed as “a motif combined with a predatory march,...

Second seasons: What a concept!
The original eight-episode run of Netflix’s Russian Doll was an instant classic, perfectly melding a familiar, larger-than-life premise with an idiosyncratic star. In Nadia Vulvokov, a self-destructive software designer who kept dying and being resurrected at her 36th birthday party, Natasha Lyonne co-created (with Leslye Headland and Amy Poehler) the eccentric, hyperverbal part she was born to play. Season One was simultaneously funny, tragic, scary, and just plain weird, especially after Nadia discovered that her temperamental opposite, the repressed Alan (Charlie Barnett), was caught...

Matthew Weiner had a very specific process for writing "Mad Men." "At the beginning of each season, Weiner would delineate his vision for that season. This would include, as one might expect, general character arcs and plotlines. The writers were also, however, bombarded with images, poetry, movie scenes, dreams, songs, quotes and on," co-writer Semi Chellas told Cornell Sun.
There was one notable exception to Weiner's all-encompassing vision, an episode that would be considered one of the series' greatest: "The Suitcase," season 4, episode 7. Weiner told Vulture "The Suitcase" was "a special script that was not planned at the beginning of the season," adding:
It was an extra episode that...
