Sundance has canceled plans for its New Frontier program at the 2023 festival, the boundary-pushing section that has showcased experimental new works for 15 years. During that time, New Frontier anticipated industry-wide interest in the metaverse and other emerging technologies while catalyzing the curation of creativity in VR and Ar at festivals around the world.
The 2023 festival also will not host its digital social space or the online venue known as The Spaceship, where badgeholders can interact as avatars and watch showcased works.
As the festival prepares to hold its first in-person edition in two years, New Frontier was never part of those in-person plans. Instead, the festival planned it as an exclusively virtual event and has been accepting submissions for months. In October, artists who submitted projects received a notice from New Frontier chief curator Shari Frilot informing them that they would be reimbursed for submission fees.

The NBA playoffs kick off this weekend, but there is one notable absence: LeBron James.
For the first time since 2005, the league’s most recognizable player will be sitting at home when the postseason tips off, ending a disastrous first season with the Los Angeles Lakers. But how much will that impact the Nielsen ratings for ESPN/ABC and Turner?
“Not having him in the playoffs? Obviously that is going to hurt,” Reggie Miller, an analyst for TNT, said during a press call earlier this week. But he adds that the Golden State Warriors going for a three-peat — and four in the past five years — is one of many still-compelling storylines this postseason.
“What’s fun now is seeing who wants to take the mantle LeBron has created,” fellow TNT analyst Chris Webber added. “The Playoffs overall are going to be so exciting and competitive that the casual fan will...

Los Angeles-based cinematic virtual reality (Vr) startup Within launched a new website Wednesday that makes it possible to experience Vr on any device — be it a full-fledged headset, a Cardboard viewer, or even a mobile phone or PC desktop.
Within’s new site makes use of an emerging technology called WebVR that plays Vr experiences directly in supported browsers, without the need to download any additional software. Headset users can navigate the website directly while in Vr, with the help of their respective hand controllers and tracking tools.
Anyone who doesn’t have a Vr headset yet can access it with a traditional web browser, and simply pan around in a video the old-fashioned way. “We aim to make it as easy as possible for fans to discover and share truly great Vr experiences,” said Within’s content launch manager Jon Rittenberg in a statement.

Each year, members of MIT’s Open Documentary Lab take a look at the interactive works at Sundance’s New Frontiers section. This dispatch explores the social possibilities of Vr.
Most virtual reality experiences are characterized by individual immersion. The viewer puts the headset on and, suddenly disconnected from his or her surroundings, dives into another universe. But the New Frontier section at this year’s Sundance Film Festival reflected a growing tendency towards social Vr experiences, showcasing a number of projects where participants shared their virtual journeys. Ranging from animation to documentary, the projects “Chorus,” “VR_I” and “Zikr: A Sufi Experience” connected different people into a common interactive Vr experience, exploring ways of engaging them in this other reality.

Here at Et, we’re obsessed with a lot of things – and this is what we’re most excited about this week:
Why We’re Obsessed With ‘Hallelujah’
Leonard Cohen’s classic song gets the Vr treatment in this unexpectedly immersive and beautiful take on “Hallelujah.” Los Angeles-based musician Bobby Halvorson performs a five-part a cappella arrangement in-the-round, allowing the viewer to get a full 360-degree experience with the audio and visual changing depending on which direction the user is facing. First premiering at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival in April, “Hallelujah” was released to the public on Cohen’s birthday. “Combining the transportive qualities of music with virtual reality results in an incredibly emotional and gripping experience, we hope the launch of ‘Halleujah’ will provide a chance for people to connect with the iconic ballad in an entirely new way,” Within co-founder and CEO Chris Milk said in a statement to Et.

Virtual reality has been on the cusp for decades, but many in the tech industry touted 2016 as the year Vr finally arrived. Multiple consumer headsets were released, billions of dollars were invested, and more media companies experimented with Vr content. One widely circulated industry projection predicted Vr and Ar (augmented reality) revenues of $150 billion by 2020.
Right now, however, that hype seems overblown. The technology is still clunky, many Vr systems remain prohibitively expensive, and headset sales have been less than impressive. One major obstacle to mainstream adoption of Vr is that there currently isn’t enough compelling content to make the high prices and frequently buggy technology worthwhile for most consumers. Creators, manufacturers, and audiences are all still trying to understand what, exactly, Vr is for.

This is the kind of world domination we’re okay with.
If Annapurna Pictures were a human, it would be just entering grade school. Megan Ellison founded Annapurna in 2011, which still seems like yesterday to be honest. In the time that most six-year-olds have just started learning how to read and color inside the lines, Annapurna has produced films like Her, Spring Breakers, American Hustle, The Master, 20th Century Women.
Not content with simply producing some of the best films of the past seven years, Annapurna is now branching into distribution and marketing. That’s pretty damn cool in itself but even cooler is that their first film will be Kathryn Bigelow’s long-awaited “Untitled Detroit Project.” Annapurna produced Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty (2012), so it makes sense that they would team up again.
It will be interesting to see how Annapurna tackles distribution and marketing, especially considering how they’ve been expanding over the past few...

The hype machine behind Vr as the future of everything has been in full swing for awhile, but 2016 was the year viable consumer products became available. Here’s a simple guide, friendly to all price ranges and interest levels, of how to give Vr this holiday season. (If you buy something because we told you about it, we may receive compensation from retail partners.)
Google Carboard
On the most basic level, you can buy the extremely low tech Google Cardboard for anywhere between $5 to $20, which allows anyone with a fairly modern smart phone to try out virtual reality. Users can download popular Vr apps — Chris Milk’s Within, New York Times Vr, or JauntVR — strap their phone in the cardboard and watch many of the better 360 experiences that are available.
One important note: this is not like streaming a youtube. Vr experiences that last only a few minutes are still...

The app launches with four Vr films, including Clouds Over Sidra, which was created by Arora and filmmaker Chris Milk as a collaboration between the Un Millennium Campaign and Unicef Jordan. Shot at the Zaatari refugee camp, Clouds Over Sidra tells the story of life inside the camp through the eyes of a 12-year-old girl named Sidra. The Sidra Project, which uses the […]...

The dinosaurs still making films better embrace virtual reality, according to director Lucy Walker.
Her impressive roster of documentaries have earned her two Oscar nominations: One for her feature, “Waste Land,” and one for a short, “The Tsunami and The Cherry Blossom.” She was recently tapped to direct the followup to Wim Wenders’ “Buena Vista Social Club.” Filming “Buena Vista Social Club: Adios” sparked an interest in Cuban music and dance, which led Walker to make “A History of Cuban Dance,” a lively Vr short chronicling Cuban history through its many dance styles. The feature will also have an accompanying Vr film.
Walker is also currently a creator with Chris Milk’s Vr company, Within (formerly Vrse), a prolific production house making some of the most narratively compelling virtual reality films out there.
“I love using documentary films to take the viewer on a journey to a world they’re not physically in.

“If I tell you to move a little, it’s not because I don’t think you’re beautiful,” said Rose Troche, speaking to an extra on the set for her latest Vr film, an untitled short based on the Orlando shooting. “I like to have things happening all over.”
Most of the extras were too young to remember “Go Fish,” Troche’s history-making debut feature. (Made for an estimated $15,000, it made over $2.5 million at the box office.) Shot in black and white, “Go Fish” is a lesbian romantic comedy that became the little indie that could when it played Sundance in 1994. “I don’t think ‘Go Fish’ launched a thousand queer filmmakers so much as it launched a thousand indie filmmakers,” Troche said.
Troche went on to direct “Bedrooms and Hallways” in 1998 and “The Safety of Objects” in 2001. Since then she’s moved to TV, directing an episode of...

“Life is a festival of disruption,” Maharishi Mahesh Yogi once said. David Lynch is now set to live by this quote by “creating a mysterious & beautiful world” with the just-announced Festival of Disruption. Set to occur October 8 and 9 at the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles, on the film side, it will feature screenings of The Elephant Man, rare shorts from Lynch, and the documentary Blue Velvet Revisited. (It’s not mentioned, but this would be the ideal place to show off some of the new Twin Peaks, if you are listening, Showtime.)
On the music side, there will be performances from St. Vincent, Sky Ferreira, Robert Plant & the Sensational Space Shifters, composer Angelo Badalamenti, Xiu Xiu, DJ’ing from Questlove, and more. Kyle MacLachlan and Laura Dern will also participate in a talk, while Mel Brooks will give his own, as well as Debbie Harry and Chris Stein. That’s not all,...

Largely viewed as one of the most important of pioneers in the emerging world of Vr, Chris Milk today is announcing that his Vr company has received $12.56 million in Series A financing and will be changing its name from Vrse to Within. Led by Andreessen Horowitz (the angel investors behind 45 start-ups, including Twitter) the Vr company’s investors also include 21st Century Fox, Wme, Live Nation, Vice, Tribeca Enterprises and Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures.
In a new Medium post, Milk explained his reasoning for changing the name from Vrse to Within. “Vr eliminates the need for external frames,” wrote Milk. “For the first time, the medium is no longer outside us, but within us. The paint is human experience and the canvas is our consciousness. The idea of an externalized medium ceases to exist. That’s why I think of Vr as the last medium.”

Read More: Future Tense: Sifting Through the Patterns of Vr Storytelling at Sundance Over the past few years, the multi-talented, multi-hyphenate artist Chris Milk has evolved from an interesting artist telling compelling stories through music videos into a visionary wunderkind, a celebrity technology prophet of sorts, proselytizing a virtual future in which machines, as he famously posited in his popular 2015 Ted Talk, might be the "ultimate empathy tool." Milk’s ideas about the potentialities of Vr for building bridges of empathy that have the power to unite and better humanity, along with his passion for his subject, were pivotal in setting my own producing direction down the Vr rabbit-hole. I wanted to interview him, to pick the brain of the man who’s both captured public attention and put on spotlight on the issue that maybe what we do with this emerging tech is more important that the tech itself.

There it all was, the raw shaky cam quality of images that showed nothing of the Sunset Boulevard one usually sees in movies, the much talked about acting chops of two first-time actresses that, lo and behold, are transgender women actually playing transgender women. As I sat in awe watching Tangerine, the first movie shot entirely on an iPhone 5s, what I couldn’t shake wasn’t the hype amassed along its festival and awards gala circuits. Thankfully, I realized right away the buzz was well-earned and trained my eye on the cinematic grain instead – it was purposefully tacked on as a tip of the hat to the unwieldy uni-purpose cameras. Yet another filmmaking tool breathing its last.
And why shouldn’t cameras go the way of the dodo, and the celluloid? That’s probably a question better left to the contingent of film buffs that, as their counterparts in the book v.

The transformation of Nick Hornby from one of the major literary pioneers with a sort of sensitive Generation X masculinity (as with “Fever Pitch,” “High Fidelity” and “About A Boy”), to an Oscar-nominated screenwriter with particularly well-drawn female leads, is a fascinating one. Diminishing screen sizes and closure of a key venue led to 4% dip in numbers, festival director Clare Stewart tells ScreenDaily.
The BFI London Film Festival has recorded attendance of 157,000 across film screenings and events and an additional UK-wide audience of more than 10,000 for its 59th edition, which closed last night with Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs.
The festival, which ran Oct 7-18, could not match last year’s record-breaking attendance of 163,300, plus 12,000 UK-wide.
However, festival director Clare Stewart told ScreenDaily that a number of factors had led to this 4% drop in numbers, including the closure of a key venue and diminishing screen sizes.
“The challenge for us with attendance this year was losing Odeon West End, which is now being developed as a luxury hotel,” said Stewart, who has helped grow numbers at the Lff since taking charge of the festival in 2012.
“This venue generated 23% of our attendance in our record-breaking 2014 results. Whilst we have...

Year of the strong woman
Lff 2015 was branded “the year of the strong woman” and opened with Sarah Gavron’s period, political drama Suffragette, which saw feminist protesters storm the red carpet.
