Ordinary Angels. Photo Credit: Allen Fraser Ordinary Angels is the latest film to feature Hilary Swank playing a real-life character, and it’s directed by Jon Gunn, who’s made a name for himself both writing and directing films that tell real-life stories. He’s written American Underdog, the film about former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner; I Still Believe, a film based on the life of Christian singer Jeremy Camp; and Jesus Revolution, based on a true story, while the last movie he directed, The Case for Christ, was also based on a true story. According to Swank, Gunn was the perfect choice for a movie like Ordinary Angels, and she really appreciated his approach to filmmaking. Since 2019, a production company by the name of Kingdom Story has set about establishing itself as something of a player in the crowded field of faith-based entertainment, having dipped its toe into the world of film by adapting a handful of true-life narratives and soon-to-be-released original content, all of which have seen unexpectedly wide release thanks mainly to a partnership with media giant Lionsgate. Covering a range of topics from Christian music biopics to the life of former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner, “Ordinary Angels” easily finds a spot on the list, with a premise inspired by actual events that appear perfect for the Kingdom Story family tree but without the tendency to drift into the realm of heavy-handed messages one might be expecting.

Kurt Warner is a former American football quarterback with 12 seasons in the National Football League (NFL) under his belt. Blake Shelton stays busy with his music career, a bit of acting and a lot of career coaching on “The Voice.” He’s been on the series since the beginning, and his picks have won nine times and counting over the show’s 22 seasons. But despite his busy schedule, he returns to his Oklahoma roots time and time again for relaxation and philanthropy.
Though Shelton moved to Nashville after high school, he remains connected his home state with a 1,300 acre ranch near the town of Tishomingo. As an avid outdoorsman, it stands to reason that he’d support nonprofits with the same values.
The Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Foundation launched about four years ago and Shelton was one of the first to come on board with his support. While the organization is part of the State Department with a mission to protect, preserve and conserve wildlife and natural spaces, they don...

It is not often these days that you get a Hollywood studio release born out of the late-’60s and ’70s hippie movement, but in blending a true-life faith-based story with the uninhibited counterculture of the time, you have Jesus Revolution. It’s the latest spiritual exercise from the Erwin Brothers’ Kingdom Story Company virtual factory of inspirational faith-based films that really took hold with their 2018 smash hit I Can Only Imagine and more recently included the Kurt Warner football story American Underdog.
Unlike many films in the genre, which find their greatest box office success in the South and Midwest, the Erwins don’t dwell on pounding the message into their movies (thank God for that), but there is no question that belief in God when you might be at the lowest point of your life, questioning everything, is a key component, and clearly they look to real life for their inspiration.

Okay, so why is ComicMix reviewing a football movie? Well, first of all, we’re a little more than just comics and secondly, it stars Captain Marvel himself, so there’s that.
Besides, it’s about a real-life hero, and who doesn’t love heroes?
Kurt Warner’s story is well worth exploring and the Lionsgate Home Entertainment release of last year’s American Underdog does a fine job recounting the story. For those unfamiliar, Warner was a star at Northern Iowa but spent four years unable to get signed by an NFL team. Finally, the Green Bay Packers signed but released him in 1994. He then played three seasons for the Iowa Barnstormers in the brief-lived Arena Football League before finally making it to the NFL with the St. Louis Rams. Once there, he led what has been dubbed the Greatest Show on Turn, culminating in winning Super Bowl Xxxiv.

Comedy is king, both at home and in theaters. “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” (Sony/$5.99) took the top spot on all three VOD charts this week, just as “Jackass Forever” (Paramount) won the box office after opening in theaters and more than doubling any other film’s total take this weekend.
A normal post-pvod $14 price cut seems to have prompted a renewed surge of interest for Sony’s comedy update, which had previously hit #1 at a higher cost. That led it to topping the initial (and delayed — the film didn’t hit VOD until more than two months after it opened in theaters) release of Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” (United Artists/$19.99).
The latter may have timed its availability to coincide with Oscar nominations on Tuesday, when it is expected to score some key nods. Expect it to sustain a multi-week run, which is more important than just its initial position, though...

Things stayed pretty much status quo over the box-office weekend as Spider-Man: No Way Home held the number one spot by $3.6 million and the rest of the top ten stayed pretty much the same as last week, save for the departure of one film and two titles flipping positions.
Spider-Man: No Way Home finished the weekend with $11.0 million. This allowed the film to creep closer to surpassing Avatar as the third highest domestic grossing film of all time as No Way Home stands at $735.9 million and Avatar sits at $760.5 million. Second place held steady with Scream pulling in $7.4 million to lift its three-week total to $62.1 million. The animated musical Sing 2 crooned well enough to remain in third place earning $4.8 million and increasing its six-week tally to $134.5 million. Meanwhile, the romance Redeeming Love was locked in at number four this weekend with $1.9 million. The film now lays claim to a two-week total of $6.5 million.

After being pushed from the top of the box-office last weekend, Spider-Man: No Way Home reclaimed the number one spot from Scream by a mere $1.7 million.
Although Spider-Man: No Way Home finished with $14.1 million, it was still enough to best Scream and knock last week’s top film to second place. No Way Home now boasts a six-week total of $721.0 million and has moved ahead of Black Panther to become the fourth top grossing domestic film of all time. The Marvel juggernaut is now around $39 million shy of catching 1990’s Avatar. Despite falling to second place, Scream still landed $12.4 million over the weekend to lift the film’s two-week total to $51.3 million. Holding steady in the third spot of the weekend was the animated musical Sing 2 which added $5.7 million to give the film a five-week total of $128.4 million. The first of two debuts in the top ten this weekend,...

Zachary Levi has obviously never played a single down in an NFL football game, yet he’s playing two-time Mvp Kurt Warner in the new biopic American Underdog. Warner famously rose to prominence after spending time in the now-defunct Arena Football League and, for a time, working in a grocery store. Levi told us that, as […]

Hoping for a fifth week atop the box-office weekend, Spider-Man: No Way Home had to settle instead for a second-place finish as the film was soundly overtaken by newcomer Scream, which managed to secure $30.6 million during its opening weekend. The latest film in the “Scream” series succeeded in besting No Way Home by almost $9.8 million.
Despite losing first place to Scream, Spider-Man: No Way Home still added another $20.8 million over the weekend to easily lock in a second-place finish. With $698.7 million in five weeks, No Way Home is now the fifth most profitable domestic film of all time. Dropping one spot to finish in third place with $8.3 million was Sing 2, which now lays claim to a four-week total of $119.4 million. Also falling a spot to fourth place this weekend, was The 355, which managed to add $2.3 million over the weekend to give the action/adventure a two-week tally of $8.4 million.

Buffeted by bad reviews and bleak box-office predictions, the star-studded female spy thriller, The 355, never really stood a chance against Spider-Man: No Way Home—not even in the blockbuster’s fourth weekend in theaters. Even so, Universal’s globe-trotting espionage flick fell short of expectations, pulling in a paltry $4.8 million in its domestic debut. Meanwhile, Peter Parker and company continued their miracle run at the multiplex, not just taking the top spot again with ease (thanks to its $33 million North American haul over the weekend), but also continuing their assault on the record books, where the Tom Holland tentpole became the sixth highest-grossing film of all time at the domestic box office and the eighth-biggest worldwide.
Let’s kick things off with the good news: After a month in theaters, Spider-Man: No Way Home continues to be one of the few Hollywood films to succeed despite of the pandemic.

Spider-Man: No Way Home held the top spot of the box-office weekend for a third straight weekend. Again, the film finished atop second-place film by quite a considerable margin; this weekend by $33.1 million. As it adds to its total as the highest grossing domestic film of last year, No Way Home now sports a three-week tally of $609.9 million.
In its third weekend of release, Spider-Man: No Way Home added another $52.7 million to the bank. This was more than enough to ensure dominance over Sing 2 which, despite holding onto second place for a second straight week, managed only $19.6 million over the holiday weekend. This gives the film a two-week total of $89.7 million. Climbing a spot to land in third place this weekend, was The King’s Man which, despite mixed reviews, added $4.5 million to raise its two-week tally to $19.5 million. In like a lamb and out like a lion. That saying pretty much sums up 2021 at the box office. After an unpredictable twelve-month period of peaks and valleys in the theatrical movie business due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the year ended on a triumphant note thanks to Sony’s mega-blockbuster, Spider-Man: No Way Home. Adding another $52.7 million to its coffers over New Year’s weekend, the superhero tentpole soared past the $600 million mark in North America, making it the tenth-highest grossing movie domestically of all time, helping to push the year’s total box-office numbers up significantly from 2020—but still a long way off from the pre-pandemic good old days.
With no major new competition hitting multiplexes over the holiday frame, No Way Home had another clear path to the top spot. In its third week of release, the PG-13 smash dropped -37.7% from the previous weekend, earning a...

Another weekend, another chance for Sony’s superhero adventure “Spider-Man: No Way Home” to flex its box office dominance.
The comic book sequel, starring Tom Holland as Marvel’s favorite neighborhood web-slinger, towered over domestic box office charts for the third weekend in a row. “No Way Home” captured $52.7 million over the New Year’s holiday frame, boosting its domestic tally to $609 million. It extends an epic streak for the latest Spidey adventure as the lone blockbuster to deliver the kind of ticket sales it would have been expected to make in pre-pandemic times. It now ranks as the 10th-highest grossing domestic release in history, supplanting Disney’s “Incredibles 2” ($608 million). “Spider-Man: No Way Home” currently has its sights on spots eight and nine, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” ($620 million) and “The Avengers” ($623 million).
No other blockbuster has been able to come close to reaching similar box office heights, at least in the U.

Moviegoers rang in 2022 and slammed the door shut on 2021 by watching “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the kind of escapist fare that seems to be resonating strongly in the middle of a public health catastrophe that stubbornly refuses to go away.
The superhero sequel easily topped New Year’s Eve box office charts, earning $15.4 million on Friday to send its domestic haul to a mighty $572.6 million. Its performance caps a strong year for its distributor, Sony Pictures, which also scored commercially with the likes of “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” and “Venom: Let There Be Carnage.” The film’s runaway success is welcome news to the exhibition industry, which is still struggling to come back after Covid upended the theatrical landscape. Omicron, the highly contagious variant that is leading to record cases of the virus in the U.S., may prove to be another setback for the business, but so far it hasn’t...

For the second week in a row the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spider-Man: No Way Home held the top spot of the box-office weekend. The film made $57.7 million more that the second-place film. No Way Home now boasts a two-week tally of $467.3 million. It was a Merry Christmas and then some for Peter Parker as the skyscraper-swinging superhero’s latest adventure, Spider-Man: No Way Home, soared past the $1 billion barrier at the global box office in just its second week of release. That makes Sony’s smash hit not only the fastest blockbuster to accomplish that ten-figure feat since 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but also the first billion-dollar grosser worldwide since the pandemic began. But while Spidey was busy fighting crime (and raking in loot), the holiday’s slate of new releases—Sing 2, The Matrix Resurrections, The King's Man, American Underdog, and A Journal for Jordan—were left to divvy up the box-office leftovers with varying degrees of success. A week after becoming the first film of 2021 to rake in more than $100 million in its opening frame, No Way Home continued to rule the multiplex, crossing the billion-dollar benchmark in a mere 12 days.

Without “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony) this weekend, it might have been lights out for theaters. Literally.
With it, Covid Christmas No. 2 is a reasonably successful season. The incredible domestic 10-day total of $467 million (and reaching $1 billion worldwide) — as much as double expectations — does raise hopes that the end is in sight for gross-challenged exhibitors. That this comes in the face of the Omicron surge — with holiday plans disrupted, Broadway and other events shutting down, some sports postponed — has to be seen as a major boost for exhibitors’ viability.
Still, the totals for the weekend, and even more so the individual results for most of the films, suggest some stockings got filled with coal. The three-day total of all films will come to around $145 million. That’s 73 percent of the last unchallenged Christmas-adjacent weekend in 2019 ($198 million). December 24-26 fell in the middle of the week that year and took in $188 million,...

Arriving just in time to be an attractive four-quadrant option for family outings to the megaplexes during the holiday season — provided, of course, that the latest Covid surge doesn’t cause another round of movie theater shuttering — “American Underdog” is a thoroughly predictable yet hugely entertaining sports biopic that is bound to please almost anyone who’s not a sourball cynic or a snarky critic.
Much of its appeal stems from Zachary Levi’s winningly sincere portrayal of Kurt Warner, the football phenom whose improbable ascent from grocery clerk to NFL superstar by way of a warmup in the Arena League is the sort of true-life story that seems almost too good to be true, even when it’s told as well as it is here.
But while Levi undeniably is the most valuable player, he likely wouldn’t score quite so impressively without a strong supporting-player team that includes Anna Paquin as Brenda,...

So, you’ve survived the big holiday rush and are feeling a bit restless after the big meal. Perhaps you usually recoup by watching one of several football games on the tube that afternoon. But what if you’re not that invested in the match-ups and just want to get out of the house for a bit? Well, why not combine the two by taking in a new flick at the multiplex…one all about football. Oh, but it’s not a fictional tale of a group of “ragtag’ misfits pulling together for a beloved but often cranky coach. No, it’s all true, a sports biopic, but also a love story in the vein of the classic Pride Of The Yankees, minus the disease finale. And unlike that “chestnut,...

After four days of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony), December domestic grosses have unexpectedly done only 4 percent less than the same first 20 days in 2019. And to put the huge increase in comparison, before this weekend the total gross stood at less than half. Of course, the good news is a result of the just-under-$300-million total for the latest Marvel sequel. The early result of “No Way Home” alone is 63 percent of the month’s take so far.
All of a sudden, this Christmas looks like it could be closer to normal than anyone expected. Our December preview suggested that a $900 million total — a bit over 75 percent of 2019 — was a high-end target. This included what seemed like an optimistic guess for the first 15 days of “Spider-Man” at $300 million. But after just four days, the film is already hitting that threshold.

This past weekend saw box office records getting shattered left and right as Spider-Man: No Way Home scored the second highest domestic opening of all time, taking the box office beyond merely being “good for the pandemic.” In one weekend it became the year’s top grossing film in the U.S. and the sixth highest worldwide, and by the end of the year it may very well become number one. While Spider-Man will continue to reign at the box office for a number of weeks (it just took home the third best Monday gross ever), the slew of films big and small opening this week promises something for everyone, and the Christmas frame won’t be entirely dominated by the webslinger.

During Kurt Warner’s storybook rise to Super Bowl champion, plenty of sportscasters and journalists played up the “rags to riches” tale of the undrafted quarterback, who was stocking grocery store shelves before getting a second chance to play football.
