I'm no stranger to weird movie drugs, from the homemade hallucinogens created by the cult in "Mandy" to the seriously surreal Soy Sauce of "John Dies at the End," but doing worms is certainly a new one. In the upcoming horror film "All Jacked Up and Full of Worms," the movie's protagonists find their high by ingesting hallucinogenic worms. Check out the exclusive clip below to see exactly what kind of cinematic madness writer and director Alex Phillips has cooked up for fans of freaky films. It's only a tiny taste, but the full film will be coming to the Bloody Disgusting streaming app Screambox and VOD streaming services on November 8, 2022, just in time for everyone to start craving something spooky again after the horrors of Halloween.

Film is arguably the most challenging art form of them all. Seeing something disturbing in, say, a painting is vastly different than seeing something disturbing in motion on film. The way that movies are able to get underneath the skins of viewers is what makes the art form so special, and director Alex Phillips seems to fully understand this if his genre festival darling "All Jacked Up and Full of Worms" is any indication.

"Wanna do worms with us?!" Strap in for something extra crazy. Cinedigm has debuted a full-length official trailer for an indie psychedelic horror creation called All Jacked Up and Full of Worms. We featured a teaser during the summer just before the film's premiere at Fantasia. It's also playing at Fantastic Fest this weekend before arriving on Screambox for streaming this November. Two strangers bond over eating (and making) addictive, hallucinogenic worms leading them on a psychotic bender full of murder and perversity through the back alleys of Chicago. Fantasia's description: "Shot in the midst of the pandemic, a tiny-budget flick with vastly creative design and a twisted story, Alex Phillips' debut feature is possibly the greatest earthworm-junkie-horror flick in history of earthworm-junkie-horror cinema." This stars Phillip Andre Botello, Betsey Brown, Trevor Dawkins, and Eva Fellows. The more they show from this, the weirder and weirder it looks!! I like...

All Jacked Up And Full Of Worms
With the second half of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune currently in production, there’s a lot of talk about worms in film circles, but Alex Phillips’ Fantasia international Film Festival contribution All Jacked Up And Full Of Worms focus on the creature in its lowliest form, the humble earthworm, and it will make you look at them in a whole new way. Following junkies Roscoe (Phillip Andre Botello) and Benny (Trevor Dawkins) as they become obsessed by a new fad, eating or snorting worms in an attempt to get high, it’s an exploration of psychosis which is dazzling and revolting audiences in equal measure. I met up with Alex at the festival for a chat about it, which was enhanced by an unexpected contribution from the film’s credited ‘worm effects guy’ (and producer) Ben Gojer.
Alex has eaten worms himself, he says.

“Wanna do worms?” It could be the tagline of this crazy Fantasia flick, or it could be the thesis statement of the whole film. You decide. Alex Phillips’ drug-fueled adventure has the look and feel of a crazy midnight movie and an absurdist comedy all rolled into one.
All Jacked Up and Full of Worms is a trippy comedy of misadventure that follows a handful of strange characters as they encounter one another and eventually all get high on worms. Benny (Trevor Dawkins) is a strange, somewhat off putting, yet simultaneously sympathetic man who desperately wants a baby. Is debut writer-director Alex Phillips trying to say something with All Jacked Up and Full of Worms? Or is he just trying to make viewers wish they were as high on hallucinogenic worms as his characters? Ask his target audience and they’ll probably laugh in your face for daring to presume they care. All they want is that out-there insanity writhing around in the slimy discharge left by a journey between nightmare and reality. Ask everyone else and they’ll tell you straight away they left the theater two minutes in—a choice I will not begrudge them, beyond the fact that doing so means they missed an unforgettable finale that almost makes sticking with this tour through Chicago’s seedy back alleys worth it.

"The dirt becomes the worm. The worm becomes the man. And the man becomes dirt." And worm becomes God! Cinedigm has revealed a super wacky, weird first teaser trailer for an indie psychedelic horror creation called All Jacked Up and Full of Worms. This is premiering this month at the Fantasia Film Festival, hence the teaser out now, and Cinedigm has already snapped up distribution with plans to debut it on their Screambox genre streaming service in the fall. Two strangers bond over eating (and making) addictive, hallucinogenic worms leading them on a psychotic bender full of murder and perversity through the back alleys of Chicago. Fantasia gives it quite a effusive push: "Shot in the midst of the pandemic, a tiny-budget flick with vastly creative design and a twisted story, Alex Phillips' debut feature is possibly the greatest earthworm-junkie-horror flick in history of earthworm-junkie-horror cinema." Starring Phillip Andre Botello,...

Film Festival, which runs July 14 to Aug. 3 in Montreal.
Also billed by Cinedigm as a “transgressive splatter comedy,” the feature debut of Chicago writer-director Alex Phillips world premieres at Fantasia on July 16.
“All Jacked Up and Full of Worms” is then slated to stream exclusively this fall on Screambox, the genre SVOD service acquired by Cinedigm in Feb. 2021, followed by another exclusive window on Cinedigm indie platform, Fandor.

Tagline: "Death is Just a Matter of Perception." Sunset on the River Styx was funded through a Kickstarter drive. Aaron Pagniano helms this film, with his first feature. On Kickstarter, Pagniano raised just over 60K. Now, the film is set to have its World Premiere at the Cinequest Film Festival, which takes place in March. Along with Pagniano, Sunset on the River Styx stars: Phillip Andre Botello (The Art of Self-Defense) and Jacqueline Jandrell (We Got a Monkey's Paw). A trailer and poster are available here, ahead of the film's World Premiere. The story is a bit of a mind-bender. Two characters struggle in Florida. Will drives buses for a living, while Ashe finds solace in writing. Their romance is complicated by a vampiric Death Cult, which alters their sense of time and space. Very much a psychological thriller, Sunset on the River Styx melts reality, in favour of something else.

I love when a film comes along that is like nothing else that I’ve ever seen. When you can describe a movie as combination of two other things that never would go together? Love it. Those of you who pay attention on social media will know that The Art of Self-Defense is a flick I’ve been raving about for months now. Described as what it would be like if Charlie Kaufman wrote Fight Club or if Yorgos Lanthimos directed The Karate Kid. Those are apt comparisons, while also limiting the black comedy magic on hand. It opened in limited release this past weekend, playing to a decent box office. In fact, I even moderated a Q&a in Brooklyn at the Alamo Drafthouse with star Jesse Eisenberg. Now, with it opening wide, I wanted to pay it some further tribute. This is one of the five best things I’ve seen all year.

Stars: Jesse Eisenberg, Alessandro Nivola, Imogen Poots, Steve Terada, Phillip Andre Botello | Written and Directed by Riley Stearns
Directed and written by Riley Stearns, who wrote and directed Faults, a movie I was very fond of back in 2014, The Art of Self-Defense follows a highly strung and anxious book-keeper named Casey, played by the not-new-to-neurotic Jesse Eisenberg, who is attacked by a gang and decides to join a karate class in order to learn… well, the art of self defence. It’s here that he meets the Sensei, played by Alessandro Nivola (Face/Off), a charming teacher who helps give Casey some optimism. We also meet Anna in the karate studio, played by Imogen Poots (Green Room), a brown-belt with mettle. The film takes a trip down dark alleys, however, when Casey goes to the night class of Sensei and finds an underbelly of violence and extremes of masculine bravado.

"You're a blade, and I'm sharpening you." Bleecker Street Films has released the full-length official trailer for the indie dark comedy The Art of Self-Defense, which premiered at the SXSW Film Festival this year to some great reviews. This film is the latest from director Riley Stearns (of the film Faults previously) and it's hitting limited theaters starting in July this year. Jesse Eisenberg stars as Casey, a fragile man who enlists in a local dojo after being attacked at random on the street. What he uncovers is a sinister world of fraternity, violence and hypermasculinity, and a woman fighting for her place in it. Sounds delightful. The small cast includes Alessandro Nivola as the Sensei, plus Imogen Poots, Steve Terada, and Phillip Andre Botello. One SXSW review says it's an "uproariously comical and hypnotically unnerving" film that gives "a hilarious middle finger to toxic masculinity." Really excited to seeing this one,...

Happy April, everyone! As we gear up for a brand new month, that means we also have a more horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases coming out this week, making for the perfect way to kick everything off. If you happened to miss it during its theatrical run, The Man Who Killed Hitler and then The Bigfoot heads home on both formats this Tuesday, and I cannot recommend it enough. Scream Factory and IFC Midnight have teamed up for the home releases of Pledge and Rust Creek, and if you’re a big Hellboy fan, two of the animated Hellboy movies are headed 4K Ultra HD as well.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for April 2nd include Terror 5, The Man With The Magic Box, Red Island, The Banished and Toxic Tutu.

Independent horror doesn’t need to go overboard when it comes to a premise. Just set the scare for something scary and then let the brutality commence. Simple is rarely a bad thing. The new indie fright flick Pledge has certainly figured out the secret sauce. A horror film set during fraternity pledging? Very little sounds more terrifying. So, watching young men suffer while trying to join a club may bring back fond memories for some, for plenty of others it sounds like literal torture, something the film just takes to the next level. The result is something slick and very compelling. The film is a horror/thriller hybrid set on a college campus. Justin (Zachery Byrd), Ethan (Phillip Andre Botello), and David (Zack Weiner) are a trio of nerdy friends looking to rush a fraternity. As they get rejected from frat after frat, despair on the part of Justin and Ethan sets in,...

Set to be released through IFC's Midnight label, the film focuses on three friends and their unifying dream to enter an elite fraternity. They could never expect what lies in store for them. From director Daniel Robbins (Uncaged), Pledge stars: Zachery Byrd, Phillip Andre Botello, Aaron Dalla Villan and lots of others. This title had its World Premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival (Montreal), earlier this year. Now, a trailer and release details are available for this torture porn styled thriller. The story involves a group of misfits. Ethan (Botello), David (Zack Weiner) and Justin (Byrd) hope they can leave their losing streak behind, by finding acceptance in college. Their desperation leads to a bad choice as they are lured into a fraternity, run by psychopaths. After they are loosened up with alcohol and parties, the...

Synopsis: "Three friends get the chance to live the college dream when they’re invited to join an elite fraternity—but first they’ll have to survive the hazing from hell. Freshman social misfits Ethan (Phillip Andre Botello), David (Zack Weiner), and Justin (Zachery Byrd) are desperate to improve their terminally uncool reputations by pledging one of their university’s prestigious Greek houses. "Privilege comes with hard work." IFC Midnight has debuted the first official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Pledge, a much more horrifying take on the fraternity ritual of recruiting young university students. This premiered at Fantasia and Screamfest this year, and is hitting theaters at the beginning of January. Pledge is about a group of outcast college freshmen who decide to pledge an exclusive fraternity but soon realize there's more at stake than they could have ever imagined. The full cast includes Zachery Byrd, Aaron Dalla Villa, Zachary Weiner, Phillip Andre Botello, Cameron Cowperthwaite, Joe Gallagher, Jesse Pimentel, and Erica Boozer. I don't like fraternities much anyway, but this is taking the idea of hazing to the most extreme - literally turning it into a brutal cult horror film. Crazy frightening. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Daniel Robbins' Pledge, direct from YouTube: Three nerdy college freshmen,...

Exclusive: IFC Midnight has obtained the U.S. distribution rights to Pledge, a college frat horror-thriller, which was directed by Daniel Robbins. The pic, written by Zachary Weiner, had its U.S. premiere at Screamfest and will get a theatrical release in January.
Zachery Byrd, Aaron Dalla Villa, Zachary Weiner, Phillip Andre Botello, Cameron Cowperthwaite, Jesse Pimentel, Joe Gallagher, Jean-Louis Droulers, and Erica Boozer star in the film.
The story centers on three nerdy college freshmen, who have been rejected and ridiculed by just about every fraternity on campus, are invited to an off-campus to a party at a secluded mansion. There they are treated like princes by the resident brothers and the party is everything they dreamed college would be—beautiful women, drinking, and most importantly, a cool group of guys willing to accept them as one of their own. [Note: To talk about either of the films below too much would spoil the wonderful delights within, so the following reviews are as vague as possible whilst touching on some salient points in both films]
Pledge
Stars: Phillip Andre Botello, Erica Boozer, Zachery Byrd, Cameron Cowperthwaite, Aaron Dalla Villa, Jean-Louis Droulers, Joe Gallagher, Jesse Pimentel, Melanie Rothman, Zachary Weiner | Written by Zachary Weiner | Directed by Daniel Robbins
Pledge follows three freshmen pursuing what they think is the ideal college experience. But despite their best efforts, the goofy and likeable David (screenwriter Zack Weiner), Ethan (Phillip Andre Botello) and Justin (Zachary Byrd) get the cold shoulder from the campus frats. They’re ready to throw in the social towel when they meet the gorgeous Rachel (Erica Boozer), who invites them to a party at a mansion in the country. What could possibly go wrong?
Films about fraternities never end well… Well, those that Aren’T comedies that is! If it’s a comedy then you can usual guarantee some kind of new status quo, a nice wrap up that sees everyone “get along” for the greater good.
