“Bring back my girls,” RuPaul famously said; now, here they are again in “RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars 9.”
Angeria Paris VanMichaels, Gottmik, Jorgeous, Nina West, Plastique Tiara, Roxxxy Andrews, Shannel and Vanessa Vanjie are the returning queens and they’re doing something good for the world. In a new twist, they’re no longer competing for prize money; instead, they’re backing their favorite charities.
The competition will follow a non-elimination format. Instead, each week will see the top two queens will earn benefactress badges. By the end of the season, the top queens with the most badges will compete for the crown, a space in the “All Stars” Hall of Fame, plus prize money for their charity. The queens also receive a stipend for their wardrobe.
Speaking with Variety, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” producer Tom Campbell said the show will be anything but boring: “We’re taking on charities that are very important,...

“The first thing Ru said was, ‘I’ll do anything but a competition elimination show.'” So says Emmy-winning executive producer Tom Campbell, who was in the room where it happened when the idea for RuPaul’s Drag Race first came to be nearly two decades ago. In an exclusive interview with TV Insider during the 2022-23 Emmys voting period, Campbell took us through Drag Race‘s fabulous history, from the first meeting where its format and most of its iconic catchphrases were born through its multi-network rise to being one of television’s most successful reality competition series. With his 12 total trophies and seven consecutive wins for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program, RuPaul has won the most Emmys of any Black artist in history (he’s nominated again this year). At a certain point in history, the sun never set on the British Empire. Now that’s true of RuPaul’s Empire, with at least one version of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” always in production. Executive producer Tom Campbell has traveled the world for different iterations of the reality series and credits the franchise’s success to the goal (on a broad structural level and in micro-moments) of making RuPaul Charles laugh.
“It takes a lot of pre-planning and then you have to be incredibly in the moment when things go differently or there’s an opportunity,” Campbell told IndieWire. He often acts as connective tissue between Charles and the show’s small army of producers so that filming can roll with any audibles called by the host, guest judges, or queens.

Showtime has announced the release date of their upcoming limited series “Fellow Travelers,” starring Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey. The eight-episode drama will premiere on Oct. 27.
Created by Academy Award nominee Ron Nyswaner and based on Thomas Mallon’s novel of the same name, “Fellow Travelers” is both a romance and a political thriller, depicting the secret relationship between two men who meet in McCarthy-era Washington. Bomer plays Hawkins Fuller, a man with a lucrative behind-the-scenes job in politics, and Bailey plays an idealistic, religious young man. Their romance begins at the same time that Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn declare war on “subversives and sexual deviants.” The show tracks the protagonists over four decades, through the Vietnam War protests, the drugs and disco of the 1970s, and the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.
“Fellow Travelers” also stars Jelani Alladin, Allison Williams and Noah J. Ricketts. Daniel Minahan serves...

This story about “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
There’s a lot crammed into each 30-minute episode of “Untucked.” The companion show to “RuPaul’s Drag Race” captures the moments after the contestants learn whether they are safe from elimination or will lip sync for their life (and for the chance to stay another week in the drag queen competition). But “Untucked” also serves as a group therapy session, a place where they can “turn off” their drag and competitive personas and just be themselves, a rare respite in a competition where they must be constantly “on.”
“It is the moment where the queens are no longer their characters,” “Untucked” executive producer Kenneth Leslie said. “They’re with their sisters celebrating, crying, laughing. They’re going through every emotion as a human being, not as a character.

For the past 10 years, RuPaul’s Drag Race has delighted fans with the Rusical — a musical production during each season that features the remaining contestants performing their take on a famous show. The concept has become somewhat of a staple on the series, though none have been quite as topical as Season 15’s Wigloose.
“Like everything on RuPaul’s Drag Race for 15 season, it started with a bad pun. We’ve done 10 years of musicals. It’s one of our favorite things. We always are brainstorming year round, really, about what would work…we thought, ‘We’ll just do a fun parody of the Footloose story, which is about a town that didn’t have dances, so we’ll do a town that doesn’t have drag,” executive producer Tom Campbell said during the show’s panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees event, where he was joined by Season 15 winner...

Celebrating television might feel like a wasted effort right now, especially since 11,500 writers and 160,000 actors are walking the picket lines for the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. But it would be unfair to overlook the extraordinary work of so many Emmy-worthy creatives, even if the ongoing dispute between the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers prevents writers and actors from talking about the very series that got them a ticket to the 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards in the first place. Sadly, everyone will have to wait until January 2024 to see who will accept their just rewards. But this year’s Contenders Television: The Nominees virtual livestream event that kicks off Saturday at 10 a.m. Pt will certainly make it worth the wait.

‘Drag Race’ Team on ‘Wigloose: The Rusical’s’ Importance: ‘Our Existence Could Be Put Out Like That’
Rusicals have been a “RuPaul’s Drag Race” institution since Season 6 and something audiences look forward to each season. Executive producer Tom Campbell credits fellow producers John Polly and Michael Seligman for coming up with this year’s “Wigloose: The Rusical.” Says Campbell, “They said ‘Wigloose,’ like ‘Footloose,’ and it writes itself.”
The maxi challenge puts the queens’ performing skills to the test, through song, dance and acting, as they tell a musical story. Previous challenges have included “Moulin Ru: The Rusical,” Madonna, Cher and even Donald Trump’s presidency. The idea is that audiences already know the story of the Rusical and condense that into a production that’s less than 12 minutes long.
Season 15’s Rusical, “Wigloose,” is set in the small town of West Bumtuck, where drag has been outlawed, and is a parody of the 1984 film “Footloose” starring Kevin Bacon.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” producer World of Wonder has revealed a trailer for “Big Freedia Means Business,” an eight-part docu-series that follows “Queen of Bounce” Big Freedia.
A subgroup of 1980s hip-hop music, Bounce music has defined much of contemporary hip-hop culture. The series follows New Orleans choirboy-turned-Bounce rapper Freddie “Big Freedia” Ross, Jr., as she juggles new business ventures, touring, and the ups and downs of her personal relationships. This season Freedia begins work on opening a hotel; starts a cannabis line; and prepares to launch her own beauty and fragrance lines. The series will also chronicle the launch of a new album, set to drop later this year.
After having her music sampled by Beyoncé for “Formation,” Big Freedia was featured on “Break My Soul” from Beyoncé’s album, “Renaissance.” She released the album “3rd Ward Bounce” on Asylum Records in 2018. In 2019, Big Freedia and Kesha released their pop single “Raising Hell,...

Gold Derby caught up with Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato backstage at the 2023 edition of RuPaul’s DragCon LA, a two-day extravaganza taking place at the Los Angeles Convention Center. In addition to winning five Emmy Awards for “RuPaul’s Drag Race” (2018-21) and “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked” (2021), they’ve also been producers of DragCon for World of Wonder since the very beginning. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“It started in 2015 so we’re in year eight, but we had a pandemic and things like that,” Bailey tells us. “But we’ve done DragCon in New York and the UK, so we’re fully in our eighth year, but in the 12th DragCon.”
What’s special about this year’s DragCon? Barbato declares, “This year we have over 150 ‘Drag Race’ queens from all over the world, so it’s like the United Nations of drag. There are so many queens.

She looks like Linda Evangelista. She’s a model. And now, Valentina is the cohost of “Drag Race Mexico” alongside global superstar Lolita Banana.
The announcement was made Friday on the main stage of DragCon LA, the world’s largest annual drag convention.
Valentina rose to fame during Season 9 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” The judges were enamored with her beauty and style, but her run ended after she famously protested taking off her facemask during her elimination lip-sync against Nina Bonina Brown, placing seventh.
She would later compete in “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 4,” also finishing seventh. She’s appeared in her own Wow Presents Plus series and modeled in several fashion magazines, including Vogue Mexico, and appeared in Fox’s live musical “Rent.”

The ninth annual SeriesFest, an annual television-centric event held in Denver, kicks off Friday with a slightly abbreviated schedule in light of the writers strike. Per WGA rules, writers are not allowed to make “promotional appearances” at film festivals or at “For Your Consideration” Emmy events. Already, a number of FYC showcases have either been canceled, or continued on but with just a screening, no panel, due to the strike.
SeriesFest becomes the first festival to be impacted by the strike. This year’s event takes place from May 5 to May 10, which now happens to coincide with the early days of the strike. As a result, showrunners have opted out of a handful of panels, while screenings of many new and returning shows will now take place without talent/showrunner Q&As. It could be an early peak at the pivot that may have to take place with other upcoming festivals,...

The “RuPaul’s Drag Race” franchise is up for 11 Emmys, including Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program for “Untucked,” the documentary-like series that follows the competing Queens backstage as they decompress during a break. While “Drag Race” and all its offshoots are full of LGBTQ+ representation, the most recent season of “Untucked” was extra special as it saw Season 14 Queen Jasmine Kennedie come out while holding the hand of her sister Kerri Colby.
As TheWrap spoke with Jasmine, Kerri, and executive producers Mandy Salangsang and Tom Campbell during the Awards Season Screening of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” they addressed having that powerful, personal and touching moment captured on TV.
“Up until that point into that season, I would say I was very comfortable with a camera around me. I will say I was very loose and didn’t really have any,...

This story about “RuPaul’s Drag Race” first appeared in the Limited Series/Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Fourteen seasons in and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” is still sparking cultural conversations. Take the one that cropped up in January before the Season 14 premiere, when word broke that the long-running VH1 franchise would be introducing the show’s first straight male drag queen, Maddy Morphosis.
What, some fans of the show wondered, was a straight guy doing on a competition that is a celebration of the queer community?
“It’s not the first cisgender man who has auditioned for “Drag Race,” but it’s the first one who we felt like their drag was really authentic. The show debuted on Lifetime in January and from Feb. 10 will be transitioning from linear to digital, starting with a two-episode drop followed by weekly episodes rolling out on mylifetime.com, the Lifetime app and VOD.
Taylor, whose 19-year-old son Pootie was diagnosed with autism as a young child, says she had first wanted to open her doors to TV cameras over seven years ago. Speaking via Zoom, Taylor tells Variety, “When my son was first diagnosed, I started seeing so many depressing stories about autism in the media, and back then people were not talking about it.”

Netflix debuted a trailer for Season 4 of “Cobra Kai,” which premieres on Dec. 31.
The series takes place more than 30 years after the events of the 1984 film “The Karate Kid,” which culminated in Daniel Larusso’s (Ralph Macchio) triumph against Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) at the All Valley Karate Tournament. Their rivalry lasts throughout the decades, but in Season 4, Daniel’s Miyagi-Do and Johnny’s Eagle Fang dojos join forces to take down the Cobra Kai dojo led by their enemy John Kreese (Martin Kove) at the All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament.
“If Johnny and I can actually work together and we win, Cobra Kai will be out of business,” Daniel says to his wife Amanda (Courtney Henggeler) in the trailer, which you can watch below.
“You gotta take things to the next level,” Johnny says to his students. “Eagles do not respond. They swoop down and take whatever they want.

This year’s batch of Emmy nominated filmmakers for both documentary and nonfiction encompass a wide spectrum that include veterans who have greatly influenced the genre and younger creatives getting their first dose of wide exposure. In getting to talk with them, it was incredible to hear them not only talk about the works that influenced their decision to go into nonfiction storytelling, but also the nonfiction works that have stood out to them in more recent years. Gold Derby recently had these discussions with Kirby Dick (“Allen v. Farrow”), Amanda McBaine (“Boys State”), Steve James (“City So Real”), Tom Campbell (“RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked”) and Jeff Orlowski (“The Social Dilemma”) during our recent “Meet the Experts” panel.
