In the wake of Hayao Miyazaki’s latest Oscar win for “The Boy and the Heron” and the VOD dominance of “Godzilla Minus One,” Japanese cinema continues to be as vital as ever to American audiences. That should make the upcoming edition of Japan Cuts, the annual film festival celebrating Japanese cinema co-produced by Japan Society, one of the most exciting events on New York cinephiles’ summer calendars.
The lineup, which IndieWire can exclusively reveal, contains a mix of American and New York premieres alongside a curated selection of newly restored classics. Notable titles include “Shin Godzilla: ORTHOchromatic,” a new black-and-white version of Hideaki Anno’s 2016 kaiju blockbuster; and “Shadow of Fire,” the war drama from “Tetsuo: The Iron Man” director Shinya Tsukamoto that premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival.

"We have something no one else could share... Don't you know that?" Netflix has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie thriller titled Earthquake Bird, which is premiering at the London Film Festival this month. The latest from English filmmaker Wash West, the film is about a young woman living in Tokyo who becomes the prime suspect in a horrific murder when her friend goes missing in the wake of a tumultuous love triangle. Alicia Vikander stars as Lucy Fly, with a cast including Riley Keough, Naoki Kobayashi, Kiki Sukezane, Yoshiko Sakuma, Kazuhiro Muroyama, Ken Yamamura, Crystal Kay, Akiko Iwase, and Jack Huston. This looks like yet another standard peculiar love-triangle murder-mystery psychological thriller, but it doesn't seem the Japanese locale makes much of a difference. I wish this looked better than it does so far, because the idea for it does sound quite appealing. Here's the official trailer...

Insane Japanese horror comedy “Yamagata Scream” sees popular actor Takenaka Naoto taking up the directorial reins once again, for a very different proposition to his romantic drama “Sayonara Blue”. The film might politely be described as eccentric, revolving around undead samurai, zombies, schoolgirls and pop culture gags, all thrown together in madcap, everything but the kitchen sink style. Taking the lead is teen actress Narumi Riko (“How to Become Myself”), with support from an impressive ensemble cast including veteran Iwamatsu Ryo (“Sawako Decides”), Maiko (“Yama no Anata – Tokuichi no Koi”), Exile’s Akira (“Be Sure to Share”), R&B singer Crystal Kay, and Haru (“Koizora”), with Takenaka himself making an appearance, along with cult Japanese gore director Iguchi Noboru (“Robo Geisha”, “The Machine Girl”) and others. The film begins with troubled schoolgirl Mikayo (Narumi Riko) fleeing from her recently remarried father and going on a trip with 3 classmates and her...
