The Disney+ Star Wars series Andor just had its finale, and now the season can be viewed as a whole. The show, which served as a prequel to the 2016 Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, received a 93 on Rotten Tomatoes as well as an 83 audience score. Fans and critics alike praised the show for being unique to the franchise without having to rely on nostalgia and fan service to tell a self-contained story.
According to metrics, the show trailed behind other Star Wars series, such as The Mandolorian, according to the Nielson’s streaming ratings. The viewership, although lacking, still garnered enough to earn the series into the top 10 most-watched streaming shows during its entire run. The lackluster numbers are likely why Disney is giving the show an extra push by making episodes available on broadcast television that can be viewed by non-subscribers.

Ask anyone involved with "Andor" about the main reason behind the show's creative success and inevitably, the first thing they'll point to is the vision of creator Tony Gilroy. Brought on board to help bring "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" across the finish line back in 2016, the filmmaker behind "Michael Clayton" and the scripts of the "Bourne" trilogy proved impressive enough to bring back for another go-around on the "Star Wars" carousel with the spin-off series based on Cassian Andor (Diego Luna).
The results of handing the creative reins for "Andor" over to Gilroy has been pretty self-evident. Judging from the critical response to the rather un-"Star Wars"-like production (you can check out /Film's Vanessa Armstrong's review here), such a creative shake-up was exactly what this franchise needed. Part of that shake-up involved turning up the violence, the adult situations, and proposing some pretty anti-authoritarian politics for...

It’s a more intricate and complex Star Wars than you’ve ever seen.
While the Star Wars series from The Mandalorian to Obi-Wan have been obsessed in stunt-casting legacy characters and those from the Dave Filoni animated universe, the Tony Gilroy created Andor is a very serious, detailed spy show, almost reminiscent of Apple’s Slow Horses. Andor follows Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor from the Gilroy penned Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, in his rise from being a refugee guy to a rebel who looks to redeem his planet Kenari; his people largely wiped out due to an alleged mining accident from the empire.
If you want to know how serious a show Andor is, the show kicks off with Luna’s Cassian looking for his sister in a brothel.
You can listen to our conversation with Gilroy below:

Disney+ Hotstar is pleased to share the thrilling, final “Andor” trailer that debuted at D23 Expo today during the Lucasfilm Hall D23 presentation.
“Andor,” a spy thriller from Lucasfilm filmed over two 12-episode seasons, takes place five years before the events of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” The era featured in “Andor” is filled with danger, deception and intrigue where Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a rebel hero. “Andor” presents Star Wars from a different perspective, focusing on everyday people whose lives are affected by the Empire. The decisions they make have real consequences, and the stakes for them—and the galaxy—couldn’t be higher.

Diego Luna and Kathleen Kennedy kicked off the Saturday session of Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim by dropping the final trailer for the Rogue One Disney+ spinoff series Andor.
“We’re going to go back five years before Rogue One, and you won’t believe where you find these characters,” Luna said. “You’ll see Cassian and not believe he was able to do what they did in Rogue One. It’s about a revolutionary and bringing change and hopefully a story you will love to watch.”

In the new footage, we see Luna as Cassian Andor listening to Stellan Skarsgård’s character, Luthen Rael, who has a proposal.
“You’ll ultimately die fighting these bastards,” Rael says. “Wouldn’t you rather give it all at once for something real?”

Just over a week out from the premiere on Disney+, Lucasfilm on Saturday unveiled the final trailer for the new “Star Wars” series “Andor” during D23 Expo 2022. And you can watch it here now.
Things sure look bleak for the galaxy, as well it should given that, as explained during the Lucasfilm D23 presentation, the show is set about five years before the events of the 2016 film “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” Which puts it firmly in the same time frame as “Star Wars: Rebels,” or if you prefer, the era when the Empire was at its greatest power and freedom was but a distant memory. (Cue “Star Wars” music.)
“We’re going to go back five years. You won’t believe these characters,” star Diego Luna said during the presentation. “It’s about the awakening of a revolutionary. It’s about someone finding out there’s a purpose.

Star Wars fans are excited about Disney+’s Rogue One prequel drama Andor, but one beloved character from the movie isn’t showing up anytime soon: Alan Tudyk’s acerbic Imperial droid K-2So.
“From a storytelling point of view, there are multiple reasons,” head writer Tony Gilroy told critics at the Television Critics Association’s press tour on Wednesday. “I would say, ‘Wait and see.’ It’s a story we are eager to tell. It’s difficult to carry an Imperial droid around with you and not draw all kinds of attention. It’s a difficult piece of luggage. When we do it, we’ll do it in a spectacular fashion as opposed to presenting it and ignoring it, or presenting it or hiding it, or the bad versions we would have been forced to do.”

Chernobyl’s awards run continues after picking up the award for best mini-series at the BAFTA TV Awards.
The HBO and Sky co-production drama beat BBC drama The Victim, Channel 4’s The Virtues and ITV’s A Confession to pick up the award.
Jared Harris also won the leading actor award. He beat The Capture’s Callum Turner, The Virtues’ Stephen Graham and Giri/Haji’s Takehiro Hira to the award. Harris joked that BAFTA had “ruined his losing streak” and he shouted out former HBO exec Kary Antholis, who told him that Daniel Day Lewis was the network’s first choice to play the role.
This comes after the disaster drama picked up three Emmys in September, including outstanding limited series as well as seven awards at the Creative Arts Emmys.
The show, which charts the fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant explosion in 1986, was produced by Jane Featherstone’s Sister Pictures.

“1917” has won the Producers Guild of America’s award as the best-produced feature film of 2019, giving it an important victory at an awards show that usually honors the film that goes on to win the Oscar for Best Picture.
The film, an immersive drama about World War I that was fashioned to look like a single shot, triumphed in a field that also included top Academy Award contenders “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood,” “The Irishman,” “Parasite” and “Joker.” While the PGA win makes it a de facto frontrunner of sorts in that race, this is a year in which the Oscar race still feels unsettled.
“Apollo 11” won the award for documentary feature, while “Toy Story 4” won for animated feature.

The Producers Guild of America has revealed its nominees in the motion picture and television categories for its 31st Annual Producers Guild Awards; nominees include recent Golden Globe winners “1917,” “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” “Missing Link,” “Succession,” “Fleabag” and “Chernobyl.”
The PGA, which has about 8,200 members, has matched the Oscar for best picture in 21 of its 30 years, including “The Green Book” last year and “The Shape of Water” in 2018.
The PGA uses a preferential balloting system that’s similar to that employed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The PGA and AMPAS both expanded their voting for the top film to 10 nominees in 2009. About three-quarters of the PGA’s Zanuck nominees wind up as Oscar best picture nominees.
On the TV side, among all of the drama and comedy nominees, only “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (last year’s comedy winner) is a repeat from last year.

“Chernobyl,” HBO’s gritty and horrifying retelling of the worst nuclear disaster in history, has jumped to the No. 1 spot on IMDb’s all-time TV rankings just days after the limited series concluded.
As of Tuesday, “Chernobyl” had a 9.7-star (out of 10) average rating from about 140,000 users on the Amazon-owned IMDb site. The five-episode limited series finished its run on HBO Sunday, June 3.
For now, that puts the critically acclaimed “Chernobyl” ahead of AMC’s “Breaking Bad” (9.5), BBC’s “Planet Earth II” (9.5), HBO’s “Band of Brothers” (9.5), the original “Planet Earth” (9.4), HBO’s “Game of Thrones” (9.3) and HBO’s “The Wire” (9.3), according to IMDb’s ranking of TV shows. HBO’s “Chernobyl,” a five-part miniseries that debuted May 6, dramatizes the true story of the 1986 nuclear accident that was one of the worst human-made disasters of all time. Though the event is no secret, press coverage in the months and years that followed painted broad strokes and sweeping statements. The miniseries offers viewers a tighter focus, examining the women and men who were caught in the middle of the catastrophe. Minute by minute, it recounts the events that occurred in late April and shows how much of Europe was at risk — and ultimately saved — from a radioactive debacle.
The high level of detail in the series makes this story that much more suspenseful. To find locations that appeared authentic, filmmakers looked east at countries with a Soviet history, says producer Sanne Wohlenberg. “We needed a tax credit and a place that has enough crew base to facilitate a show of our size,...

I’m excited. The Doctor has come to America before, but never like this. For the first time in the show’s history, Doctor Who is filming stateside.
Sure, there have been episodes set in the states before, but none were filmed on American soil — the closest they got was Canada for the Doctor Who television movie with the Eighth Doctor, which was set in San Francisco. This time, they’re doing it for real: they’re filming in Utah.
“The Doctor has visited every weird and wonderful planet you can imagine, so he was bound get round to America eventually!” enthused showrunner Steven Moffat in a press release. “And of course every Doctor Who fan will be jumping up and down and saying he’s been in America before. But not for real, not on location – and not with a story like this one! Oh, you wait!”
